I came in as a new patient expecting the usual procedures of x-rays, exam, and cleaning. Instead, I got just the x-ray and then a 30 min talk with the dentist going over oral health, but it was more of them explaining the difference between orthodontics and dentistry than any discussion around actual solutions for my teeth. While they checked my gums, teeth, and mouth, and I appreciate that, if I was paying to go to a class on dentistry, then the $125 payment would have made sense. Then after 30 min of them talking, they sent me to the desk to schedule a cleaning. The fact that the cleaning was NOT included was not mentioned to me when scheduling and during my appointment. I also checked the website about what to expect from the first appointment, and there was nothing specific about what was included. Instead, it was put on me that I should have asked what was included. I couldn't get a cleaning scheduled until next month due to their availability. The 30 min talk could have been spent on getting my teeth cleaned. The staff seemed nice, but there could have been more transparency around what I was paying for and what was included in the visit. Also, they're out of network, and were very sneaky when they called for the consultation to not mention that until after I made the appointment and they got my credit card for payment, but said that they work with you to file claims with your insurance. I'm sure someone from their staff will respond to this review about "this is our policy," or "this was told to you," or "it's on the website," but I just wanted to share this because I think that people deserve to know especially when it comes to finding the right doctor. read more

Dr. Ramirez saw my 12 year old with a dental emergency while we were visiting from out of town. She and her staff were so kind and gentle and her compassion was heartfelt. She relieved my son of his pain and we were able to drive back to the LA area calmly and comfortably. We were turned down by a handful of other dental offices in the area for various reasons, but this office was wonderful. If my son ends up going to college here, he will definitely be going to Dr. Ramirez. read more

I went for the new patient special a week ago and Dr. Mark was incredibly kind, took his time, and explained every step/why they do it and what it means. They were able to quickly schedule a cleaning with April and she was phenomenal. April is welcoming, empathetic, funny, and took the time to explain every step/future plans for my oral health. Well I found them super nice and was treated with great respect and friendly staff interactions. But the actual treatments were lacking. I had to have a tooth extracted. Dr. Ramirez had a heck of a time getting my tooth out, the hammering went on and on and on! She looked really stressed, and afterwards I was in terrible pain. I wanted to get an implant so she placed a bone graph to prepare for the implant socket. After a couple of days I noticed a flap hanging from my gum. I called and got an appointment, which they got me in immediately! But apparently I swallowed some of the bone graph but she stitched it up again. And said we would wait for a month or so and check with an X-ray to see how the graph took and then proceed with the implant. I waited and waited as months went by so called for an appointment. I went to the appointment and they looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about and the appointment was for a cleaning. So I made another appointment for the check up on the bone graph, months later! Still no X-ray to check on the progress and really it's as if they had no idea about the graph! They said I had to come back in for another appointment with several dentists for a consultation and evaluation. In the meantime I would need a two filling and a crown. The fillings would cost nearly $900 and the crown close to $1800. In the meantime my elderly mother went in and had bit the inside of her mouth a few days before her appointment. And they wanted her to come in for a filling and separate appointment to monitor her lesion! Are you kidding me? I asked do you mean where she accidentally but her cheek?? Another $300 or so to check that? Crazy town! In my opinion, they are expensive and do not provide a good service but are super friendly though! read more

Having visited multiple dentists in my past, I finally found the one dental practice that makes you feel welcomed and wanting to come back. The stressful days and restless nights days before my dental visit are over. I used to fear having to go to the dentist, now I actually look forward to my next appointments. The location is quaint and warm. The minute you walk in, you are greeted and have a nice waiting area to relax and have a cup of coffee. It feels like you're walking into a living room. The office staff is very friendly and helpful. The hygienists are very thorough and informative. They provided great feedback on what to do and not to do in order to maintain good dental hygiene. The dentists and assistants there are also very knowledgeable and provide you with the best options on any needed corrections. They are willing to take the time to explain and weigh out your options. Nothing ever feels 'forced' upon you and you don't feel so intimidated. The best thing is they make sure you are never uncomfortable or in any pain when they are working on you. Some cool things about the place is they have pretty amazing technology behind the scenes. Being a mechanical engineer by trade I was amazed by the computer aided equipment they utilize. Everything is so precise and meticulous. I would definitely recommend this place of service for anyone looking for a dentist in the area. I have been going to their office fore years for my quarterly cleaning and exams. I had a night guard and it clearly needed to be replaced as it was work out. Last visit or the visit before I got a quote on one for about $500 which to have it made through the dentist office and the mold taken in house and the lab to create and to have it fitted properly is about normal. At the time I decided to not have it made as I wanted to decide and think about it. This is the concerning part. The next time i went in I was quoted over $1200 for the same night guard. After I said something, the doctor knocked off $200 or something. I think $500 was too much but I would have paid for it but $1200 give me a break that's a total rip off. I will not ever be going back there again not will I refer them to my friends of family. read more

I just moved to SLO, and started having tooth issues and saw an ad saying Dr. Ramirez takes new clients. I don't have much money but I have dental insurance. Her ads covered all types of dentistry leading me to believe that I could have all treatment in her office. I called and they got me in. I told her how much pain I was in and she used ice and tested the tooth. It was clear I needed a root canal. She spent 5 min with me if that! The dentist told me how I grind my teeth and told me to go to CVS for a night guard and gave me a name and papers for a $2500 specialist. She walked out without even saying goodbye or seeing if I had more questions. She went to the next patient. I walked out to a $250 out of pocket payment for 5 min of consulting. Shame on a dentist that is all about money and not caring about people. I left in more pain than when I went in and $200 less in my pocket. I was given no advise for pain or temporary measures. She never checked if I could afford the next procedure- just pay and go. So sad! read more

I am a SLO County native and the last time I saw Dr. Dassenko was in 1995 to have a patch done on my chipped front tooth (kid-me had a close encounter with a swing set pole...). As an adult, navigating the awesome world of insurance and preventive care, I decided to go with a trusted doctor after some mediocre experiences with other area offices. Dr. Dassenko's front staff (Jamie) is very personable, friendly, and sensitive to each client's needs. She is on top of the administrative stuff, issuing reminders and sending out emails to explore insurance options, payment plans, and other correspondence to ensure the patient is well-informed about their file. The technicians and hygienists at the office are caring and seem to really know their stuff. Each procedure I had done as a New Patient (cleaning, full dental X-rays and measurements) was done professionally and with a light (although admittedly not always "gentle") and professional touch. They described areas I was doing really well in as well as areas I could improve, and provided suggestions to make the most out of my dental visit. They were each personable, as well, asking about everyday things and work and other small-talk (which is kind of hard to respond to when they're elbow deep in your mouth!) Dr. Dassenko herself remembered me from all those years ago, which was amazing. She performed her inspections with a practiced hand and clearly identified each procedure and recommendation to my satisfaction. The office itself has changed little since I was a kid, even down to the giant red-handled toothbrush in the corner. The pricing, for those who do not have insurance, was not sticker shock nor unreasonable. The office seems to take a variety of insurance carriers and have alternative payment plans for patients who need the financial assistance. At this time it doesn't seem like they are contracted with Medi-Cal's dental plans, but I believe Jamie is exploring that further. I am paying out of pocket for these procedures, but do not feel bad about it because it is preventative and/or addressing a lingering issue from my last dental office visit and it is aimed at improving my health and well-being. For anyone looking for an office with a caring touch in the SLO area, I don't think you will be disappointed with Dr. Dassenko and company. Her "five-year" patch from 21 years ago is still holding strong, a sign of good work and quality materials, so I feel confident returning to be in her care. read more

A dentist is all about the people you interact with and the experience you have with them. I've never been to a dentist who didn't know how to clean teeth, but I've been to some that the personnel were not memorable. The folks here are memorable. So happy and pleasant to talk to. I took advantage of a $99.00 new patient promotion that included x-rays, cleaning, and check-up by the doctor. Somehow I still managed to write a $250.00 check before leaving. I was told I needed check-ups every four months, instead of the usual six months. Just like S.B. and d.h., I had unnecessary procedures pushed on me. After blowing around $1,400.00 in about 4 months, I cut my losses and asked for my records even though Dr. Dassenko had only completed the first stage of a two stage procedure that I had already paid for (the "pre-paid price.") I lost several hundred dollars doing this, but if I hadn't, I have no doubt I would have been bled dry. Every time I went in, she found more costly work, both reparative and preventative, that "had" to be done. Funny how my new dentist didn't find any of that "necessary" work. The staff however, was excellent. Everyone I encountered was incredibly friendly and professional. I was especially impressed by the hygienist. Rarely do I take time for myself during the day, and my lunches are rushed so when I go to the dentist for my cleaning, it's nice to be able to arrive and sit in peace. If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would. I wish I could explain the extent of my anxiety about going to the dentist. It took me years (an embarrassing amount) to get to the denstist. After researching and looking for someone who would understand me without judgement, I settle on Dr. Dassenko's office. I submitted a request for an appointment--with a note about my anxiety. Jamie called me within an hour about coming in. I told her I was so scared about being judged and about my anxiety. She told me they would take very good care of me. Upon my arrival, Jamie made me feel very welcome. Stella was so kind and would encourage me along the way while taking my X-rays. She instilled trust from the beginning, and that was huge for me. Dr. Dassenko and Danielle never once made me feel bad about what was going on in my mouth. They were encouraging, and incredibly positive. I went in today for my cleaning. Stella made sure I was comfortable the entire time. Always stopping to make sure I felt okay. I've NEVER been this comfortable with a doctor, let alone a dentist. I have to have a few more procedures for my gum disease, but I'm looking forward to the care I will receive from this office. On my first visit, I was told that my gums were infected, and I needed treatment which cost approximately $1700 (this was the prepay price) and would take several visits. Because I have never had any issues of gum disease (bleeding, etc), I decided to get a second opinion.
