It would be nice to know when making your initial appointment that they don't take your insurance. Three weeks later after completing one hour of new patient documentation they called to say that they don't take new patients with Delta dental. read more

I called not once, but twice to verify that my appointment I had passively scheduled 6 months out was cancelled, and of now the date has arrived and I'm getting emails that I have an appointment coming up. The administrative side of this company is wack. ALSO, they tried to randomly bill me $40 once! I called and they said it was an accident and quickly removed it... I can't help but feel that was incredibly suspicious. read more

The prices are jacked up and and I was refused a teeth cleaning without X-rays, even though I was a client to this office originally with Dr VonStein and had X-rays on file. This would turn a 150.00 visit into a 400.00 visit Unacceptable! read more

All I can say is ask about pricing before getting a service done. I had a permanent retainer that Dr Colleran insisted I remove. He came in, popped it off, got the glue off and left... maybe 5 minutes... extremely shocked to find out it was $400 which insurance doesn't cover, I saw that many dentists will do it for FREE. Had no clue it would be that expensive especially since they said" just come in a few minutes before your cleaning and we'll get that off" didn't see it as a "procedure" lesson learned... ask first. Other than that, the front desk ladies are always friendly and my hygienist was great. read more

Well where do I start? This DDS has serviced our family since local DDS retired. If you need a reply from the office don't expect to receive it. If you need a tooth repaired it might be done by tech in the office and not by the Dr. as happened to family member-who now goes to another DDS. When you go for services, even in network they charge you upfront. Not per policy of insurance company. Your refund may not come for months, even after calls. NOT good job office staff read more

Dr. Colleren took care of me during a time of great need. He didn't hesitate he just took care of me. My tooth broke inside my mouth one night while I was eating dinner. Dr. Colleren extracted it. I unfortunately chipped my two front teeth on a Sunday here in SLO. I didn't have a dentist when this happened so Monday morning I called around town and they had an opening! After filling out my new patient paperwork I got a water bottle filled with goodies and decorated with a nice ribbon! Just for filling out paperwork! This was a great gesture and made me feel really valued especially since I have never been rewarded for filling out paperwork. The whole office is really clean and nice environment. The entire staff is extremely nice and fun! They all made me feel really welcome and well taken care of which was nice considering my unfortunate situation! Since I'm still under my parents insurance they were really flexible and worked directly with my mom to get it figured it out. It took a lot of weight off my shoulders of having to be a middle man when I was already under a lot of stress with my teeth! To fix my teeth I had to get a root canal and two crowns. I heard a lot of horrible things about root canals so I was nervous but it really was not bad! They made sure I was really comfortable - I got a blanket and a pillow. They also have TVs on the ceiling with Netflix. So during my root canal I was completely relaxed, didn't feel a thing and I got to watch Beauty and the Beast! It was as enjoyable as a root canal could be in my opinion! They also did an amazing job with my teeth. I had two temporary crowns for two weeks and no one could even tell they were fake! And those were just the temporaries! Now that I have the permanent crowns, I think they again did an incredible job. They look better than my teeth before! I've also been here for a regular cleaning and it was just as great as my other experiences. I know some people don't like the dentist but at this office I don't know what you couldn't like about it! read more

The front desk staff is undeniably courteous and pleasant, but there is a notable lack of transparency when it comes to handling bills and payments. Unfortunately, they fall short in providing customers with complete information regarding the total costs and charges associated with the services. It's a situation where they may not disclose the full extent of expenses, and customers might find themselves receiving a bill with unexpected additional charges later on. While I won't delve into specific details, it's advisable to exercise caution and thoroughly inquire about the cost details before undergoing any treatment. Despite their affable and sweet demeanor, the front desk ladies seem to lack competence in billing matters. In my personal experience, they conveyed inaccurate amounts initially, only for me to discover additional charges later. good luck! read more

Dr Colleran attempted to place an implant into my jaw bone that did not have the necessary density to hold it and the implant came out. My oral surgeon tried to remedy the situation by doing a bone graft but the damage was done and I can no longer have an implant at that sight. The best part is that he didn't reimburse me for the cost of placing the implant even though it wasn't successfully completed. He also sent me a letter saying that he would not see me again because we have different care goals, like I would go back! I am seriously considering small claims court to recover the hundreds of dollars I paid him specifically for that procedure. It's very disappointing and frustrating. read more

The front desk employees were always helpful! No complaints! However, I have just changed dentists because I do not consider Dr. Colleran professional. My first doubts came as I was sitting in a chair that had one armrest taped together and another completely non-functional, just hanging! I would have hoped for soothing music to my nerves! However, he provided a cheap local radio station with blaring ads and more talk than music! He certainly doesn't want to spend ANY money on his office! My most serious concern was his patient care. He never introduced himself; I never even saw his face! He never explained what he was going to do to help give me assurance. He needs a course on patient relations and an infusion of funds to keep up a minimum of a safe and pleasant office atmosphere. read more

Great dentist, awesome staff. Dr Colleran was extremely patient and precise, felt very little pain compared to dental work I've had done in the past. The receptionists I've seen twice had me cracking up in the lobby, so special mention for Jean and Sonja up front. read more

If you are in the market for a new dentist, I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. Prior to visiting Dr. Colleran and his staff I had seen 3 other dentists who were cold, not understanding, and definitely not empathetic. Dr. Colleran and his staff are amazing. I needed quite a bit of work done after pregnancy related hg and they were so professional, non-judgmental, and kind. They really go above and beyond with your entire experience from sending a postcard after your visit thanking you, to giving you a cool swag bag. They will work with you on the timing of your work to make sure it fits your financial plan, and they have different savings promotions that save you a ton (20% off)! They are also AMAZING with children! So patient, gentle, fun, and friendly. They even have a little treasure chest for your child to get a prize after! Cannot recommend highly enough- 10/10 read more

I have been a happy patient of this dental care location for two generations of the previous owner to the present; Michael Colleran. ( 50 years ). Over that time dental health tools and methods have advanced from drills to lasers. On two recent occasions when this office was contacted for unscheduled and unexpected appointments the responses were: "Come on down." and ,"Can you be here in 40min. " Treatments have varied from tooth pulling and an implant to something beyond belief from: "Star Trek," the movie, aboard Enterprise with Captain Kirk. Thank you, Michael Colleran DDS and all of your great staff for providing your excellent care and for beaming me up. Russ Taylor read more

Thanks to the review about the LANAP procedure from another yelper here it convinced me to give the treatment another look. Saving the "original equipment" was how Dr. Colleran put it at my consult and it really stuck with me. Losing teeth is a big deal to me and I don't take what the 3+ dentists now who told me I'd lose teeth soon lightly. I basically started crying when he told me that he could, in fact, save my teeth in one or two appointments using this procedure. I've been in pain for years with no hope in sight so I was amazed to hear anything positive. Denise and Sonia in the front office have been an amazing support to me and urged me to come in for a consult regardless if my insurance would cover anything. They both told me I have options and could afford this procedure and get financing. I've seen 3 dentists now who told me I would have to have full upper and lower dentures and was quoted over $10k to do that work which would take 6 months to a year. The last dentist I saw said periodontal treatments would cost me more and "don't work". This procedure was definitely not pleasant but I can already tell (2 weeks post op) how much better my gums look and feel. I think this will save my teeth and gums and greatly improve my life. I will keep this review updated for anyone thinking about doing the procedure. Do it. It's worth it and WORKS. I had both sides done at once in a 3hr appointment with Dr. Colleran. It wasn't fun but let me tell you him and his staff are badasses and KNOW what they are doing. They were very gentle and kept me updated on what was going on when I asked. I personally decided to listen to an audiobook with headphones due to anxiety which I suggest to anyone getting a major procedure like this. No, the staff was not chatty but they were focused on making me comfortable and getting the work done ASAP. That really matters to me. I also personally think that is always so awkward to chat while getting work done because hello, you can't talk anyway! I loved at the end the sweet assistant put lip balm on and it made me feel cared for. She def did whatever she could to make me more comfortable. I am 6wks post op and completely amazed by this procedure. I got a lump over a particularly bad gum section and they redid that portion of my gums and sent me on my way. They even found a way to charge the insurance for my first cleaning. I'm so impressed by this office and can definitely say I'll be a patient with them for a long time. read more

Sigh. I'd like to put more stars in the review for the dental assistants and the front office but there isn't a way to really separate the experience; everything contributes to the overall experience, right? Appointment making and follow-up, excellent. "Bedside manner" of dentist, 2-3 out of 5. Service: 4 out of 5. Results: 2 out of 5. Most of my visits have resulted in late starts and incomplete service due to factors not made clear to me, resulting in an additional visit. "It's taking longer than planned" gets old the second, let alone the third or fourth time I hear it. Perhaps others have had a superior experience; I can only remark on my own. read more

Great time to have a severe toothache during the Shelter at Home Corona Virus! But never fear called Dr Colleran's office and revived the closed message but left a message for him. He called back within 30 minutes and made me an appt at noon. He then texted and confirmed my appt. He opened his dental office just for my emergency toothache. When I walked in, I was greeted by his wife and we had a brief conversation, while Dr Colleran prepped my chair. He was working alone and he assured me that he would make me feel better. He removed my tooth/cap from an old root canal done in Bakersfield. He said it was infected, he scheduled me a follow up appt next Wed to see my healing progress. Highly recommended!!! Thank you for opening your doors and taking time to deal with my dental emergency during this scary time. read more

Dr. Colleran is not my regular dentist, although he is my husband's. My husband has always been pleased with Dr. Colleran so when I got a painful toothache (over the weekend and right before Xmas and an out of town trip, of course)and my regular dentist was closed for the holidays I called Dr. Colleran's office to get their advice. They were so kind and helpful and worked me in that morning When I got to the office I was seen right away and x-rays were taken. Dr. Colleran thoroughly discussed the X-rays with me, showed me the inflammation in the molar's root and had the office call their list of endodontists to find one who could take me that afternoon. Now I am at home recovering from the procedure and so grateful to how kind and efficient Dr. Colleran and his staff were. read more

Let me start by saying Dr Collaren was great. As a patient with very low expectations usually only in for routine teeth cleanings, I'm very easy to please. The experience itself wasn't bad, but what happened after my preventative, super simple, basic teeth cleaning procedure was not acceptable from a professional business. I work at a large company in town, so most providers are pros with the insurance we have. As with any check in process, I provided my insurance information. I moved across town, so my address changed but I never received a single bill. I did not have one single voicemail on my phone. When I call six months later to book my routine cleaning, I'm rudely told I've been sent to collections and can't book an appointment. Frustrated, I was understanding and asked if the office manager could call me back. She never did. I called back on my own weeks later, and explained that I had insurance and preventative teeth cleaning was covered. The office manager was very defensive (very very defensive) and never acted with humility or understanding. Through it all, I just wanted to get it resolved so I was constantly asking for their help in getting it resolved. I get it, mistakes happen but you can't immaturely walk away from a patient who just needs assistance.I called my insurance company (Anthem) who told me a claim was never made and I was 100% covered. They were thorough and walked me through what to do since I paid the collections agency Dr Collaren sent my teeth cleaning bill to even though I've never been uninsured. Anthem gave me clear instructions on how to be reimbursed, but those who have heard my story say there is a definite red flag. I also learned that you can't have a service rendered without paying upfront....so, if I didn't give you my insurance you technically would not have been able to see me or allow me to leave the office. After all is said and done, if the front desk acted with patience, understanding and apologized and provided some guidance I would have been fine. read more

When I first went to Dr Colleran, I was given an estimate of work each time to sign off on before they started. Over time, I stopped receiving these estimates. I was repeatedly billed for work that I hadn't realized wasn't covered by my insurance, but I stupidly kept going back, because I didn't have the time or energy to find a new dentist. I changed jobs over a year ago and lost my insurance. Before losing my insurance, I went in for some routine care, and later received a bill for hundreds of dollars. Dr. Colleran's office had messed up the date of service and my claim had been denied. After multiple calls, time, and stress, we were able to get it sorted out and I 'only' owed about $150. I had begun to get the feeling that they were doing a lot of unnecessary work, but again, I stupidly kept going. During my last 'hygiene' appointment, they took x-rays and had the dentist come look at my teeth. I thought I was there for a standard hygiene appt, but apparently they did a bunch of 'extras' without checking with me ahead of time. Following that appointment, I received a bill for $300. When they called me to set up and appointment for additional work, I told them I wouldn't be coming back because they were too expensive. I haven't had enough time to follow-up with them about the bill, so it has sat unpaid. When I called today, they told me that the hygienist should have checked with me ahead of time. She didn't. Since I had already told them that I would not be returning due to excessive costs, they insist that I pay the full bill even though they screwed up. I will be paying it, but I think it's important that other people know the way this office does business. Expect to be told you need fillings, mouth guards, or other work every single time you come in. Do not expect to be told of costs before receiving service. And most importantly, be prepared to pay out of pocket (above and beyond a co-pay) for each visit. read more

Six months ago I had LANAP laser surgery with Dr. Colleran for some very advanced periodontal issues that the periodontist I had seen told me were untreatable and would end up in the loss of three teeth. Although I won't know for sure for another six months when they do the 1 year probing checkup, I am fairly certain those teeth are no longer at risk. I have no more bleeding or pus. My mouth feels healthy and good and according to Dr. Colleran, everything is healing beautifully. I would strongly urge anyone with periodontal disease to try the LANAP before doing any of the old fashioned surgeries that I had done that only made things worse. The process itself is not pleasant but much less invasive than periodontal surgery, and the healing was quick. I had my entire mouth done in one long session, and within two weeks felt relatively normal. Dr Colleran's staff is lovely, and he is caring and precise and excellent at explaining the process and executing it. He actually teaches it to other dentists, so he knows it inside out. I wish I had found him and LANAP earlier, before doing other processes, but I am so glad to have found him now, and I would strongly recommend going for an evaluation before having any other form of surgery. read more

HORRIBLE DENTIST! NEVER GO HERE! This man is a terrible practitioner. He does not notify patients about procedures performed that are not covered by insurance. He takes x-rays that are not covered by insurance and performs a type of filling that most insurances don't cover WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE PATIENT. Wait time is insanely long. I recently got a filling from him and he gave me the novocain and left me in the room for 45 minutes before performing the procedure. The novocain wore off half way through. He does not explain any of the procedures he performs and does not even check if his referrals are in your network. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. read more
