Dystopian Studios is located off Moulton avenue near Barbara's at the Brewery. Parking is street parking which was easy to find on the street and then you have a short walk around the brewery and then down a very long alley until you reach almost the end of the alley. In front there is a huge Giant Skeleton with his skeleton dog, and that's how you know you have reached the right place. Inside the studio it looks pretty cool and we were all impressed. I am reading some of the older reviews from 2018 and 2022 where people wrote that things were falling apart, however this was not the case whatsoever. The studio looks very clean and like new to me. It's decorated very futuristically with time portal doors and silvery paint. It was actually pretty cool to have our Kintsugi class at this location. Apparently the space gets rented out for people to do photo shoots or movies or commercials so that's pretty cool. I was signed up for a Renaissance Club event (The art of Kintsugi) at this location of the Dystopian Studios. The instructor for The art of Kintsugi only uses the space to host her classes, so I am only doing a review of the location itself and I will try to find the instructor's business to write a separate review specifically for her. read more

Really shitty studio falling apart I do not recommend shooting here limited parking and mean owner

I've been using Dystopian Studios for about five years. For the price it's a great deal. It's got some pretty good backgrounds, and Kevin is a pretty nice guy. read more

This place is extremely affordable and convenient for up -and-coming filmmakers/artists. I booked Studio II over the phone with Kevin and the whole process was relatively quick and easy. Upon arrival on our shoot date, my crew and I were given free range to make of the space as we wished--as long as we didn't bring any equipment outdoors (makes sense per insurance matters). That noted, Kevin gave us a quick yet thorough walk-through of the space and went about his business (he's very professional and polite but also seems like a private guy--which is just fine). I appreciate this because busy-body business owners give way to rather bitter-sweet experiences. The space: Studio II is quite spacious (two floors) and also furnished/propped for just about any type of film/photographic shoot. From c-stands, wall-flats and even a green screen--Kevin accommodated beyond our expectations. The second floor is obviously set-up to be a dressing room and we decided to maximize it's use since there was also a kitchen up there (crafty+dressing room all in one). Needless to say, the experience was overall great and I even found Kevin's lingering possessions (assuming they're his) to be quite interesting--like the Katana! He definitely gives this space his own personal touch and that makes it all the more welcoming. Dystopian Studios: Affordable, spacious, and well equipped: A+ in my book. read more

I can't tell you enough how good of a photo studio deal Dystopian is. I use this place for a ton of my photographic needs whenever I travel down to LA and I always get amazing results there. Awesome loft area with a cyberpunk fetish theme and a great location near downtown LA. They just opened a new add-on to the studio as well which I can't wait to try. The rates are a better deal than most other LA photo studios and Kevin, who runs the place is an extremely nice guy. Each time I make the trip down I have to go here, I love it and my clients love it. read more

Definitely check this place out in advance of your shoot to see if it will work for you. The guy is on the sullen side and the space may be smaller and more cluttered than you expect. Through normal use I accidentally broke the plastic on some cheap cowboy studio soft box he provided. He told me not to worry about it. Later I discovered I left my Sekonic light meter there. I sent him a twenty and a stamped envelope to cover his trouble for dropping it in the mail for me. I guess he decided on his own that he deserved payment for the broken soft box fixture after all, because he kept the meter and the cash. I later came across the cover to the meter, which I no longer needed, so I mailed that to him as well. Might as well. read more

Where do i start...I don't normally right reviews but i will today. And this is only for Studio 1 because thats the studio i used. Kevin is the guy in charge of the place i believe and he seems like a great guy.. That being said, i would like to express that i was not satisfied with the use of the studio and my reason is because the place was so dirty and smelled so bad that it seems that the owner doesn't give a dam no more about the place. Yes the place has a reasonable price per hour but the conditions are not great. The chairs ,tables sofas ,pillows ,walls and bathroom are disgusting. Everything you touch feels disgusting,is a complete mess. The pictures on their webpage are from when that place was new i guess. What it bother me the most is that there were no session schedule before mine so they had plenty of time to clean the place up before my session but chose not to do so. I apologize if my comments seem harsh but a business that has no respect for the work place has no respect for the client. read more

The studio is nothing like what it appears in the pictures. The place is filthy, covered in layers of dust, backdrop badly scuffed and dirty, leaking air conditioning machines causing puddles all over the electric cords and outlets. It was disappointing to say the least. The rates were reasonable and the owner seemed like a real nice guy. I just wish the place was cleaned up, even if it was just cleaned once a week it would've probably made a huge difference. read more

I have booked Studio 1 four times and Studio 2 one time and I definitely will in the future. The place is great and VERY reasonably priced. Awesome set ups. Cool decor. My camera guy always compliments how easy it is to set the shots up because the lighting in Studio 1 is really good even before we set up any other lights to shoot. Kevin is very nice, helpful, and professional. This is a great place for any indie filmmaker on a budget or any photographer who wants a cool indoor location to shoot at. I highly recommend. read more

Not a huge space, but just big enough to setup whatever lights, set, backdrop, etc. that you need. All kinds of cool, quirky, unique props, plus plain backdrops and flooring of course all included in the incredibly low price. $105 for the day? And 2 floors plus a staircase to shoot on, plus a working kitchen for your drinks and munchies so you don't have to leave the shoot. Kevin is super professional and accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Helps where he can and stays out of the way when you're working. Couldn't be happier! read more

Dystopian Studios is one of the best studios for the best prices in all of Los Angeles. Kevin has created fantastically unique backdrops that work perfectly for alt, fetish, steampunk, cyberpunk and post-apocalyptic at Studio 1 in the Brewery. He cycles backdrops to keep it fresh but you can always find the vault stuff as a traditional standby. He has a huge collection of props, weaponry, and lighting. Studio II offers more variety with a white cyc wall, wood backdrops, graffiti walls, and industrial spaces. Both studios include makeup rooms. The prices are really reasonable and I use them all the time for both solo shoots as well as group meetup shoots, and it's awesome for both. Kevin is a photographer and artist so he knows what we are looking for in a studio space and he's super reliable and easy to work with. Forever my go to studio! read more

Great studio for all your photo shoot needs, it has props, a makeup room, tons of backgrounds and its very affordable. Only $60 for 4 hours is a great deal. I look forward to going back =) read more

What can I say? This was probably one of the easiest bookings I ever made for a photoshoot. The studio offer so much such a props, screens, lighting equipment and more. There is a small but fully functioning kitchen upstairs for lunch and snack breaks. The only downside is that you're unable to shoot in the common area outside. I would absolutely use this studio again. read more
