We had the absolute pleasure of providing our 'WINTERFEST' marquee letters for this year's celebration, and seeing them lit up at night in Historic Uptown Yucaipa was truly magical. The event is a breathtaking experience for the whole family, featuring live entertainment, a beautiful tree lighting ceremony, and Santa's Workshop. The atmosphere was incredible as the community came together to enjoy the Kids' Zone and the Beer & Wine Garden. The venue and the event organizers did a phenomenal job creating an unforgettable, festive environment. It was an honor to be a part of such a meaningful local tradition. The parking across the street was plentiful at the time we we arrived. We were checked in with our tickets and arm banded to indicate we were of age. We only carried what we needed in our pockets, so don't know if there would have been a more thorough security check if we carried bags. The people we met at entrance were friendly and welcoming. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful landscaped, outdoor space. Plenty of patio style seating with cushions, colorful lighting, fireplaces, and overall, a "Hey! Have a seat and hang out with your friends in this nice open air space!" Kind of vibe. There are outdoor screens so folks who wish to not be inside can enjoy the same live experience outside. Adjacent to the room the DJ and band were in, was more seating with couches, pool table, and other games, a big screen to watch the performance, and on this particular night, opportunity to get flash tattoos from a local artisan. The bathrooms were clean and tidy. The merch line was long but well organized. There was alcohol for sale. It was General Admission "seating" which allowed the crowd plenty of space to sing, dance, mosh, and move in and out of the space easily. The sound system took a bit to dial in, but once set, the place rocked. The stage area was spacious enough for the band to work all areas of the stage and shallow enough that we could still easily see the drummer. The AC was on, so even with everyone dancing it up, it remained fresh. Which is thing with sweaty bodies! After, folks congregated in the other areas. Staff were cool about letting folks hang out for a pretty long while afterwards, and were friendly and respectful when having to wrap it up. Overall, a great event space! I already look forward to coming back.

This cultural resource was originally built and is managed and operated by the nonprofit Redlands Theatre Festival. Here in this small amphitheater, series of up to five live musical productions and plays have been presented to delighted audiences for almost 40 summers. Diane and I just enjoyed viewing the 2013 season debut of the very funny comedic musical "The Andrews Brothers," which involves three men posing as the Andrews Sisters of '40s fame during a USO concert. As always, the acting and singing were very professional and of high quality. This dramatic setting sports good sight lines to the stage below from any of the individual fold-down plastic seats. While there is no center aisle, the concrete rows in front of seats are spacious enough to allow spectators to remain in their seats as other attendees pass by. Stage lighting is good, and acoustics are excellent. This sculpted bowl setting is not particularly large, but it still comfortably seats about 800 theatre goers in close proximity to the stage, creating an intimate relationship and palpable rapport between actors and audience. Despite taking place during the hottest time of the year, all productions begin at 8:30 p.m. So, the outside temperature is usually in the low 80s. A brightly decorated festival tram is available to take theatre goers up and down the hill. But one can walk instead to get a good workout if he or she wishes. And, once again I did. But this time not by choice. After pointing out to Diane as we rode up the hill in the tram how steep the incline was and how lucky we were not to have attempted the uphill climb, as my bad luck would have it, just as we reached our car below after an easy downhill walk right after the production ended, we noted that a camera and binoculars did not make the return trip. For, I had left them behind in a bag under my seat. I felt rather stupid, but paid for my negligence with a near-breathless quick climb to the summit, and a return walk to the car as soon as a festival staffer handed me my bag, with camera and binoculars still inside, just as I reached the top of the theatre steps. I didn't say a word before the lady thrust my possessions at me. She just knew they were mine, declaring, 'You look like a man on a mission." I thanked her for safeguarding my goods, and she replied, "I've got your back!" This was very good, since this was the second time in a month that I left my camera outside in a public place, having to rely on honest employees to make up for my absentminded-ness. The last time was on an outdoor bench at BJ's. I realize the third time may NOT be the charm, so I need to pay much better attention to my valuable personal possessions.

The USO was founded in 1941 by Mary Ingraham in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide morale and recreational services to U.S. uniformed military personnel. Its goal was to entertain the troops with music and comedy and offer familiarity as the GI's "home away from home." GIs who were stationed at the new Victorville Army Air Field, (which was commissioned as a pilot training center in 1941 and later changed to George Airforce Base in 1950), would come to the USO club for a donut and a cup of coffee, to watch a movie, or meet and socialize with their comrades. After the USO was disbanded in 1947, this building was sold to the Victorville Park and Recreation District and became the Victorville Community Center. Many activities and community efforts thrived in this building, and it provided a hub for the Victor Valley to enjoy everything from sports, community leagues, and competitions, to dance classes and gymnastics. The CAC-HD continues this tradition through Performing Arts productions, education, and community-minded activities and offerings. The CAC-HD has a passion for instilling a life-long love of the arts in children and adults alike.

However, as soon as we got off the 210 freeway, we both immediately became very uncomfortable. Our navigation system lead us through what appeared to be very ghetto neighborhoods. Once we turned onto a main street, there were three hookers walking up and down the street. I was so shocked! Then we turned onto the street where Sturges is located, and there was a guy smoking what appeared to be a crack pipe on the corner of the street. The whole way from the 210 freeway to Sturges had a very eerie feeling and look to it, like a ghost town almost. Not one cop in sight! Lighting on the streets was very dim. Sturges stood out like a diamond in the rough. It is a cute, vintage-looking building from the outside. There were numerous people lined up outside, and they looked decent. Parking was filling up fast. We found a parking spot. As soon as we looked around, there were some shady-looking guys staring at the parking lot. At this point, we were no longer comfortable & couldn't wait to get the hell out of there! On the way back to the freeway, there was a man on the sidewalk appearing to be snorting something up his nose! This whole incident was like a scene from a movie of the ghetto with hookers and drug dealers walking around everywhere! We were both in disbelief! So we headed to the movie theater instead and watched Silver Linings, which we enjoyed. Chicago the Musical will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, and I will just go see it there. Had it not been in the horrible neighborhood that Sturges is located in, I'm sure it would've been a fine show to watch. What a shame.
