Zero texture to the cut and looks absolutely nothing like what I asked for. Now to see if I have to shave it or if I can go elsewhere to try to salvage it. So glad I paid for services that weren't provided correctly and now I get to pay to try and fix it I don't even want to show up to work on Monday with my hair looking like this. I'm so disappointed. Absolutely horrible place. The "stylist" Star gave me random, chunky highlights instead of an all over blonde, and didn't think to speak up to say it was far beyond her capabilities. Spent 7 hours and $500 for the ugliest hair I have ever seen. I have achieved far better results by myself, with box dye. The owners refused to answer my emails to discuss this. I ended up walking out a hot mess with dark gray/purple/brown old lady hair. She insisted that she knows what she's doing. And I also did not walk out with a shag haircut either. The stylist knew she messed up and that I was not happy, and blamed my water for her mess up, my water is fine. Cost me $300 !!! I should have not tipped her, but because of her time, I did. I can't believe she didn't take any money off. 5 days later I was able to wash half of it out with lemon juice. 300 down the sink...literally. DO NOT GO HERE FOR A BALAYAGE UNLESS YOUVE SEEN THE STYLIST'S PREVIOUS WORK. They have a large, varying staff in terms of skill level. After speaking to the receptionist about getting my train wreck of a balayage corrected, it sounded like they only have 2 capable stylists. Ask for Mallory. Filthy salon priced as an upscale one. I spent over $280 for a mess. Not to mention, there were someone else's old hair clippings all over the floor and the woman doing my hair dropped the hair brush in them and picked it up and continued to brush my hair with it. Sucks to leave looking and feeling worse than you did before you sat down in the chair. 6 hours later i had to settle for something I didn't ask for in fear of it getting worse. I spent most of my life hopping between stylists, hoping to find "the one." I never worked with the same stylist for more than a couple of visits, and only found marginal satisfaction. I didn't even think I could find true hair love until I stumbled upon Dye Salon in Ferndale and met Billy. Now, back when I started going to Dye some seven or so years ago, it was a tiny spot on Woodward Avenue. I was an early 20s college student with a short pixie cut, and it was nearly impossible to find a stylist who knew how to pull off a good women's short hair cut. After many disappointing hair encounters, I called up Billy upon my sister's recommendation. It was hair love at first snip. I loved his attitude and aesthetic. It was clear from the beginning that Billy was highly competent and non-pretentious. I gave him a loose description of what I wanted and how much time I spent on my hair, and asked him to come up with a cut that fit my style and would frame my face properly. He gave me the best short haircut I had ever had at that point. I didn't even know that such a flattering hair cut was possible. Truly, Billy was inspired. I have been loyal to Billy ever since. My mom starting going to Dye. I followed dye as it grew and moved twice, now at its current location on Nine Mile (the former home of Beauty World - my teen spot for blue hair dye - and Record time - my teen spot for loitering). It has been truly magnificent to watch Dye grow and watch Billy accomplish his dreams. Billy is an incredibly gifted stylist, and Dye is a manifestation of his talent and leadership abilities. Today, I am an attorney who is experimenting with long hair after many years of short hair. I still have a somewhat eccentric aesthetic, but Billy has managed to give me very cool haircuts that can be tamed for office wear or easily transformed for nights out. The haircuts he gives me are always low-maintenance and easy to take care of. Here are my favorite things about Dye/Billy: HIS INSPIRED AESTHETIC: I always chuckle and tell Billy, "Keep it at this length, and give me a "business rock" style. You know what cuts flatter faces better than I do. Pick something flattering that I can wear to court but that fits my personality." He will usually ask me some followup questions: Do I want bangs? Where do I want the part? How do I feel about layers? After answering the questions, he comes up with something that fits my needs perfectly, looks great, and is easy to maintain. I know for a fact that he is also able to work from pictures and make subtle changes so that it fits the person in the chair, but I love that I can give him loose guidelines and be pleasantly surprised every time. I get TONS of compliments on every single hair cut I've had from him. HIS CUTS GROW OUT REALLY WELL: He doesn't even care if this means he will be seen less frequently for followups. Even my pixie cuts grew out well. The awkward "growing out" stage that I have experienced with other stylists has never been a problem with Billy. HE IS A MASTER OF HAIR COLOR: Seriously, he does outstanding work. I have gone from brunette to red (which matches my skin tone really well). He told me when he did it, "This red hair will be the feature that distinguishes you and establishes your professional style." He's right. Everybody that I work with professionally knows me by my hair color, and I get a lot of compliments. HIS PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS ARE SPOT ON: I have never had such helpful product recommendations as those given to me by Billy and other Dye employees. I never get the impression that they are trying to up-sell me, and the products (either hair care or flat irons or whatever) always work splendidly. HE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HAIR: I love working with people who live a "right livelihood" when it comes to business. The man knows tons about the hair care industry, idolizes Vidal Sassoon, and will give you lots of information throughout your time in his chair. His salon clearly means a lot to him, and he honestly cares about your experience at the store. HE SHARES HIS PASSION BY TEACHING: Dye has grown into a teaching facility, where he works regularly to spread his extensive knowledge to tomorrow's hair geniuses. Before you go, know that Dye has a level system - you pay based upon the level at which your stylist is and I am not 100% sure how the levels are determined, but I think it's partly based upon how robust of a regular client list each stylist has, and Corey is top level. The Salon itself is very hip with neat decor, very clean atmosphere. The staff is extremely friendly and made sure to ask if you needed a beverage or were uncomfortable. The haircut itself came out nice, split ends gone and nice layers added. Your appointment also comes with a complimentary service of your choice. This ranges from polish change to neck and shoulder rub. These circumstances made it hard to tell the stylist my true feelings of the hair color she was quite excited about. I had went to the salon expecting to pay a higher price for a higher level of service. I had shown two photos to which I wanted my hair dyed similar to. Neither of which looked like the outcome. I had requested an ombré look where my natural dark brown would flow evenly down with a dirty blonde/caramel color mixed in towards the middle continuing to the bottom. Found this business using Yelp! Was looking for a salon that specialized in funky hair color. Yelp led me to Dye Salon. I called and made an appointment. I told the receptionist what colors I was interested in and she booked me with Erica. Dye is located on 9 Mile in Ferndale, very close to Rustbelt and across the street from The Oakland. Parking is metered, but if you use the parking app its easy to add time while you are out and about. The salon is clean and has edgy decor. The receptionist took my coat and then told me about the complimentary service that is provided to all customers with each visit. Some of the services are nail polish change, neck and shoulder massage, hair conditioning treatment, or parafin wax dip for your hands. Erica greeted me and then we talked about what color and cut I was looking for, I had some photos saved on my phone that we looked at. Then she went to work! She knows what she is doing and is very personable. I went with the neck and shoulder massage and it was divine! Kind of a nice that they were able to do it while the dye was sitting on my head, made time go by faster. Once I was dyed and dried, I couldn't believe my eyes. My hair was exactly how I had imagined it. Beautiful pastel lavander/grey. I was in love! The cut was amazing too! You get what you pay for. The price for my first appointment was high, but my subsequent root touch up and trim appointment was 1/4 the cost. That made me happy! I just want to add that this salon is not just for funky hair color or cuts, there were several people there getting caramel highlights or getting their long hair cut. I spent many years allowing my best friend full reign and license to do whatever he liked to my hair, this included Mohawks, mullets and a veritable rainbow of hair colorings done over several bottles of gin and Heathers marathons in his mom's basement. In my youth the idea of free hair coloring and styling seemed like such a fun and spontaneous idea that the long term effects never seemed like something to worry about: by the time I turned 26 my hair was a fried, schizophrenic mess of dried and layered schmaltz. I started going to DYE about a year or two ago and frequenting Mallory, who did a great job laying the groundwork to getting my hair back on track and giving me a flattering cut that worked for my job (I am a chef) and my social life (I'm partial to punk shows and I wear a lot of alternating black on black ensembles). Mallory was such a gem! That being said, I happened to walk in one day on a whim, hoping to get a haircut from Mallory and realized she was out for the day: the salon offered me the services of a fantastically chic hairdresser and colorist named Kat. Kat has changed my frickin' life! After having my hair cared for by Mallory and set up for more adventurous endeavors once again due to the newfound health of my hair I began seeing Kat who has helped me find my hair mojo once again. This is a spectacular lady who is not afraid to experiment with fun colors every time I come by and has done such an AMAZING job on my sense of style. From blue to green to teal to purple and beyond (we've discussed turning me into a yellow and pink psychedelic punk Martian in the coming winter) this girl can do anything. I love her color suggestions and from someone who used to be such a tomboy, this girl is invaluable: she taught me how to use every product and piece of machinery in my arsenal. WEDDING PARTY! We had a Sunday wedding that was Prohibition Themed. DYE was amazing to us. They provided mimosas, coffee, and bagels for us complimentary. They let me bring my own makeup artist. They did my mom, aunties', and bridesmaids hair in all authentic vintage styles and added all the hair pieces and accessories. Kristen did my hair and it was fabulous. She is wonderful and did everything i wanted her to do, even made a few last minute changes. Everyone was so fun. I wasn't sure if the setting would feel "wedding day" but it turned out to be really perfect. They played great music and we all had a great time. Thank you again DYE for a wonderful experience! Tess is AMAZING!!!!! I went as a first timer to this salon! I called looking for a walk in appointment which is never easy at any salon! Tess answered and welcomed me in at my best convince as if I wouldn't be a problem what so ever early on a Monday morning! I went in the salon and was greeted by her. The salon is super organized they send you a text appointment reminder with your hair salon artist as well, so if you are a new customer you know who to ask for! I spare of the moment made a compulsive decision the night before to color my hair purple! It was metallic purple I tell you... and long so it was going to take some time. Tess looked at it like it was nothing and was so patient and engaged as far as listening to what I was looking to go to. She really wanted to make sure she did exactly what I was looking for as far as the bob cut, and my new color! She even gave me a expensive and less expensive route knowing I'm a young lady paying bills too, which was really professional of her. I also spent time with the two co workers next to her who seemed super friendly and welcoming for being a new person in a new salon! When you spend 4 hours with random humans they made me feel so welcome and comfortable. The girl next to us even asked what we were doing with my hair and was just as engaged as Tess! Everybody was friendly offering a beverage,magazines, and spreading good vibes! The entire experience was over the top amazing! Every artist I saw throughout my time there seemed professional and super engaged with the customer on a personal level which I feel is important in the hair world. I had an appointment at 2:00 pm today and was left waiting for an hour. I eventually had to leave since I had a work call I had to be on by 4:00. I was only looking for a toner since my hair color washed out after being accidentally dunked in a chlorinated pool yesterday. Upon arrival I was told the stylist was running a few minutes behind but would be right with me. No biggie, I can wait a few. I was not expecting this to be an hour... by 3:00 the stylist was still very much in the middle of coloring another client's hair. It was going to be a long time before I would be seen for my 2:00 appointment. When I said I had to leave, I received an apathetic apology. I will not be rebooking. So unprofesional. read more

Agh. Sigh. I feel bad not giving this higher stars because I absolutely love the stylists, especially Ivy. The experience of going here is fabulous. I wanted to like it. But when I had an undercut, I'd go here for (very expensive!) trims, especially considering I didn't need the top longer part touched - only the shaved sides redone. And every single time, no matter who I got, they would either cut the top part without asking me, or give me crooked uneven lines on the undercut. The most notable time is when I went back to my regular stylist a few weeks later and the point on the undercut was visibly wobbly looking and off center, rather than meeting the nape of my neck, and not only that, they'd shaved my longer sideburns completely off, rather than trimming them. For awhile, it would make it worth it for me because they'd give me a free manicure, and I'm a sucker for that, but the last few times my nails were sloppier than if I'd done them myself. I bet they'd do wonderful with longer hair, because everyone else I know loves it here, and the work they do with dye is beautiful - they saved my boss from a terrible home bleach job and you can't even tell the difference now. But it might not be a good fit for me until mine grows out more. read more

I met Billy, the owner of Dye, on the streets on Ferndale when my hair was long. Not like shaggy, we're talking bigger than the Bee-Gee's long. We had an pretty great conversation randomly and I told him that I would let him cut my hair when I was ready. It is now a year and a half later since having all of my hair cut and I am still excited to go to Dye for my hair services. I think the salon has a great atmosphere. The people who work there are really great and very conversational. The last time I was there with my friend who was getting her hair done too I ended up having a salon wide discussion about photo shoots in People Weekly magazine. I guess what would you expect form a place that plays dance or upbeat music and has flames decorating the walls--it really is rock style hair. If you're looking for a salon where they can do something different then I would highly recommend giving Dye a try. Their pricing is pretty average and they sell Redken products there which are pretty great despite the salon price. I guess I figure it's a better product and part of the salon experience. I always leave Dye feeling great too, so if you need a quick pick me up, maybe it's time for a new look. I'm sure they would love to know you were referred via yelp too! read more

Confucious say: Go to Mallory for all your coloring needs! She is truly god's gift to women in terms of highlighting and dying Asian or dark/black hair. I have gone to countless (rough estimate is 20+) salons in the metro-Detroit area with color/highlighting/lowlighting results ranging from I'm-going-to-hide-indoors-and-never-come-out-again-awful to borderline marginally acceptable. Never again! Prices are a little bit higher (Mallory charges $165 for highlight, lowlight, cut and blowout - prices are posted here: http://dyesalon.com/hair/), but I would GLADLY spend that every 8 weeks for how amazing my hair looks and feels when I walk out of Dye. The atmosphere is punk-rock and Ferndale-edgy, but everyone is extremely friendly and personable. It's like a few hours spent chatting with your best girlfriends. In addition, I'm now completely addicted to the Pureology products that they carry. My hair can end up dry and brittle after coloring for so many years, but the Hydrate Conditioner is the only one that I've tried that SERIOUSLY makes it feel silky and smooth again. I can't say enough good things about Dye. If you're a color-fiend like me and can't find someone that doesn't turn your dark hair into various shades of red and orange, look no further. Okay okay. So my experience here was kind of a mixed bag. My first, initial appointment was a good one. I got a new stylist there (Tanner). He was friendly, talkative, and he seemed to know what he was doing. I told him I wanted a bright orange, showed him several, different photos of my hair like that, and he was all "Yeah, I can totally do that." Spoiler alert: He didn't do that. My hair actually ended up being a darker color than the hair I walked in there with and it looked very dark like a burgundy. Then as I'm walking out I was kind of taken aback at the price of it all, but I figured that was my fault because I never asked the prices. Plus, I realize what salon services cost. I just was a little shocked that with tip I was out $175. The next day I come to my senses and realize I should man up and ask for them to fix it. so I call up there and schedule an appt the next day. They did actually fix it and I didn't pay anything additional, but the whole experience was kind of a bummer. Two, three hour sessions here was too much for me. I wouldn't discourage people from coming here and it wasn't terrible or anything, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Dye is the Shirley Manson (of Garbage) among Ferndale's 800 salons, the bright-haired, take-no-sh|t rock-chick with big and bold ideas. An electric guitar in the corner confirms this is a place for the rebels with a cause, artistic savants, and young at heart. Stylists with wild chops or primary colour dye-jobs saunter through the stripped down interior, oozing confidence, wielding scissors and bowls of colour. I prefer someone who knows she's badass at her job and will lacquer me using the same brush of awesome. I came in for a full highlight, cut, and hydration package offered by Group On. Regular prices are higher than average, but a sliding scale with stylists based on experience, half-off Mondays, and reduced prices on Thursdays put services in my range. Music pulsed in the background while Emily assessed my hair and my desires, then set to work whipping up cupcake-like shades -- caramel, butterscotch, burnt honey, amber -- to brighten my dark hair. Dye uses Redken products and Pureology for their shampoos/conditioners. I'd sell my firstborn for daily scalp massages and blowouts; Emily left my scalp tingling and the rest of me relaxed as jelly. Emily was great, not only in listening but engaging me as a client through the 2.5 hour process. Once I was washed up, she started snipping away. I let her do her magic without much interference. I dread losing more than 1/4"-inch of hair, so as long as it stays long, better that the artist surprise me. And she did! A metric ton of hair lightened my 'do up immensely and the bright, warm highlights threaded through look funky and multi-dimensional. The effect looks good and the haircut is very manageable in my wash-wear-go! lifestyle. The rest of the staff fits together a bit like a band, working together to make sure the process keeps flowing, a sign of a well-run salon. They threw quips and seemed clearly at ease in one another's company, making me laugh in the meantime. Someone checked in periodically to see if I needed a beverage, another nice touch. Parking around Ferndale is a pain sometimes, but Dye is centrally located near the Breckenridge lot and right on 9 Mile. Emily checked in to make sure I didn't have a meter to plug. I just moved to Texas, but before I moved away, I decided to go get a haircut and get some funky colors put in. I ended up at Dye after looking for a place known for color. Everyone at Dye was very friendly. My stylist was Drew, who did the cut and the color. He was very knowledgeable, and his foil placement was perfect. the colors looked great and the cut looked great. He understood what to do with my fine, straight hair and listened to what I wanted. I'm sad I had to leave and probably won't end up going back.... but everyone else should definitely check them out. After going here for months, spending literally about $300 each time (went there twice every month for about 6 months so about $1800), and my hair dresser making promises that next time we'll definitely get the color right...I'm just over it. She got the the color right once! And it washed out after one shower! I was so angry. I spend way too much money to have the color I wanted for only a few days. She promised it was permanent color and that it would stay for a long time. Don't make fake promises! Even tho everyone was super sweet and I saw another hair dresser doing some amazing hair color on another girl, I don't understand why mine was impossible to do for her? If you don't know how to dye hair, then don't make promises! I wish I hadn't wasted all that money! read more

I had the worst experience at Dye this past Saturday. After 7 hours, I was extremely displeased with the results of my hair. I went in extremely excited, but everything got worse and worse as the day went on. I went in to get my hair grey and lavender... Came out with pale blonde hair with brown, brass and grey patches. I know lifting hair to the appropriate blonde can be difficult, and I was understanding of the stylist's (Cat) difficulties. At one point, however, she started straight up crying. And that made me feel bad. She kept telling me to not be upset when I was honestly just chilling. My only desire for the rest of my hair journey was to not be blonde.... And here I am with blonde hair. It would have been fine, and I would have come back to lighten it more, but the bleach/messed up dye job was overall messy and not uniform. It's like she gave up. I'm pretty sure that's basically what she did. She started the job neat, but then after a while she just started just slapping on color and bleach again. On top of that, most of the time she was talking about her coworker under her breath. I didn't understand that. As a new customer, I was offered a free add-on, so I picked make up application. Never got it. At the end of it all, she told me I owed 160 bucks. And I couldn't believe they had the audacity to even think to charge me full price for something I didn't ask for at all. The only thing that made my experience better were two girls -- one named ivy and the other was tall and blonde and extremely extremely nice. They both were apologetic and did a great job washing and blow drying my hair, as well as providing good conversation. Ivy also got my price lowered to 95 bucks, even though I'm still really upset I paid that much for something I hate and will have to get fixed. As a college student, I don't have that much money and was trying to splurge to celebrate the end of my semester, but instead I'm stuck with messy, sub par bleached hair my friend could have accomplished in my bathroom for free. The shop was really clean though, and the rest of the employees seemed really attentive and nice. Also, they were always sure that you were comfortable at all times, which I appreciated. I completely trust my hair with her. I get the vibe that all customers feel that way about their hair stylists.
