Went here to get a cut and trim for my husband, he likes a bit longer on top, short on the sides and neat around his ears. 10% off if you check-in for any salon service. Holly cut my husband's hair. She seemed nice, was chatty at the beginning and end and concentrated during the cut. The wash and cut took about 30 minutes. It also cost $30. Tips have to to be given in cash, rather annoying since I am not one to ever carry around cash and don't want to be paying $3 to use an ATM machine, which is ornamental, as it does not work. The top was nicely trimmed. I did have to clean the sideburn on his left cheek and around his ears on the right side of too. The attention to detail needs a bit of work. read more

this salon is such a gem !!! 1000% recommend I've been a couple of times and what I love is they are warm, friendly, NO EGOS, and do an amazing job!! I was in between salons and find it hard to get a stylist without the big ego garbage where they do what they want to your hair or they don't give a shit and rush through. Even worse is if the salon is expensive and they do that = not worth my hard earned $$ - - Not here! Ella was an incredible stylist and not only was she so kind and fun with my mom who's handicapped (I find people look down upon her and it gets frustrating) she did such a good job on my mom that my whole family was impressed! I've been coming here for a year and a half quite often. I've tried many stylists but my favorites are Robyn, Emanuela and Emilia. Robyn is the friendliest hair stylist. From the first time she did my hair, we conversed as though she was my number one stylist. Another great thing about her is she will flat iron my hair until it's smooth. Not everyone does this during a blow dry. Emanuela, Emilia and Kristin are good at getting my hair smooth as well. My hair is curly/thick/frizzy so not all of the stylists here are able to get the job done with just a blow dryer. Also, Uli is always super friendly. This salon has definite potential...but it is dirty. There is hair everywhere--like it is never cleaned. The chairs have hair dye all over them. Some stylists just sit around in client seating spots when they don't have a client. If they cleaned daily, this would be a MUCH better salon. read more

Aqua Salon is a fantastic place for haircuts, coloring, and styling. The hours are great, even for those who work 9-5 jobs. The staff is very friendly and I would recommend this place to everyone. In particular, my favorite part of Aqua Salon is my stylist Matt. Matt is truly amazing at what he does with hair. Aqua is great. I have been going there for years. Julie is my stylist and she is wonderful. She's so down to earth and knows exactly what I want without me even saying it. It's hard to trust someone with your look, but she just gets it. She listens and understands witjout pushing anything down your throat. Her neighbor Christina is also fabulous. I've watched her while Julie does my hair and her clients are always impressed with how she handles their look. The salon recently had a makeover and had new floors put in and updated some other things in the shop. It looks 10x better then it did years ago. The front desk ladies are always very sweet. Great selection of Redken products also, but they don't push it on you which is awesome. It's there if you want it. Give this place a try. :) read more

I had an appointment at another salon and 30 minutes before my appointment...they called me to cancel saying that they had a booking error and that they would not be able to accommodate and get me in that day. This was not only frustrating but particularly a big issue since most decent salons are booked up in advance and they are closed on Sundays AND I was leaving for a 2-week vacation on Monday. So I was freaking. I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg either. I called a few other salons and of course, nobody could accommodate. I then called Aqua and even though they were extremely busy...they were able to fit me in. I actually explained what happened to the receptionist (seriously love him) and he immediately felt my pain and said that they could get me in right away. so five minutes after calling I was in my car and on my way. My stylist was Holly and she was great. I didn't get a cut, just color, but she did an awesome job at executing what I wanted. She was so gentle and sweet and I will definitely be coming back to see her. Aqua saved the day and I didn't spend any more than I wanted to. Going forward, Aqua will be my new go to salon! Thank goodness my friend referred me to this spot! I'd been looking for a place to get my hair done for months and lived in Michigan for over a year at that point. She gave me a "referral" card that gave me and her a discount (after I went) on hair services- which can add up as you know. I get a color and cut for a reasonable price. I see Christine who is friendly and knowledgeable about what she does. Great color AND cut. The manager is always welcoming and friendly. He chats with me if Christine isn't ready and offers water/soda. You can also do your nails while you wait if you want. Emanuela is my wax girl- she knows her stuff! I had a wedding to attend while in town for a vacation visiting family and needed a late afternoon appointment for a blow out... came across Aqua Salon and decided to give it a try. I regret that decision. 1) The atmosphere is like a Super Cuts, there is nothing that makes this place a "salon" atmosphere 2) Ella was nice at first, chatty enough but then when I had issues with my hair, was not. She insisted that I should wait until I get home to smooth out my hair because it will fall if she does it.. but the curls were not curls and it was very frizzy. 3) I asked for my hair down the middle and with my bangs to the sides, I have bangs that are growing out.. I left with a side part and bobby pin holding them back. 4) finally, as I'm leaving she said she will not put any more hairspray in my hair because it's a little "crunchy" with how much she already put in..... that is NOT what you want to hear after you get your hair done. But the worst part of the whole experience.... 5) I was told that a blowout was 35$... expecting to pay 35$ from this place, which is the going rate for a blow out at all other boutique places specializing in blow outs!!!!! I got to the register to pay and was charged an extra 15$ because she used her curling iron.. on curls that I have to go home and fix because I finally just gave up. Oh! And it's cash tip only.. so hopefully you bring cash or you'll have to pay the extra 3$ service charge on the ATM.. which also was not mentioned before service. I had to leave to make the wedding or else I would have spoken with someone about the extra 15$ charge.. needless to say I will not be back and I most certainly would not recommend this salon to anyone. STAY AWAY. TL;DR: HIDDEN FEES, BAD STYLIST, SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. read more

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! I took the advice of the reviews and decided to drive all the way from Ann Arbor to go there. They have coupons on their website if you are a first time client, and there was one for 1/2 off color service. I was scheduled with Christina and she is worth every penny!! I came in with a whole mess of problems (I died my hair black, then freaked and have had highlights pulled thru for the last year). My highlights were very streaky, and consisted of 3-4 different colors.. all of the "bronze" nature. My fault for 'cheating' on my stylist and cheaping out at Aveda... I told Christina I had no idea what to do-- just something HAD to be done!! She knew exactly what to do, and the result was gorgeous!! I will never see anyone else!! She tackled my hair perfectly in terms of the blow dry (I have extremely curly and frizzy hair, not to mention thick!), too. It came out really straight, without a bunch of product and 20 mins of having the straightening iron ran through it. It seemed really empty when I went in there, which was a little strange. But it was a Monday afternoon. It was nice though to not have to wait for my hairdresser-- she was right at the reception area when I came in. Also, the decor is pretty cool-- very simple and modern. Can you say expensive, overdone and snobby? For the record, there is nothing the matter with me wanting a no fuss hair cut. Not everyone wants to wash, condition, blow dry, style and the slather their hair with chemicals every morning. When I say I need a haircut that requires no morning prep I mean just that, a cut that let's me shower,comb and then leave the house with wet hair. I went to Aqua because my stylist was on vacation and I really wanted a decent look asap. I got an app with Lisa. She was sweet and gave me a decent haircut. I gave this place two stars (actually I wanted to give it one...) because it's the FILTHIEST salon I have ever stepped in. There was no place for me to put my purse but.... the floor which had dust bunnies and hair from clients ago. The sink where Lisa washed my hair was pretty much in the middle of the salon; there were cleaning supplies in view which turned me off completely. The white couches where dirty, the rest of the furniture was chipped and dusty... Yikes! I attempted to contact the management but their email is not working properly. Update: You guys really need to allow tipping on credit cards. It's an inconvenience to use cash these days. I've been going here for years and love this place. They're friendly when you call and friendly when you arrive, never snooty like some salons. I've seen Martha and Ashley, and they were both awesome with color and cuts. My only negative point is that I've never had a scalp massage here while getting my hair washed -- not that I expect a 30 minute massage or anything -- but it's always been a quick wash and done. Nice place... Salons are tough; in this case I think it was the cut that brought the rating down. The atmosphere was very pleasing, it reminded me of a few salons in Chicago that I have been to... very euro-style motif with people who are excited to be there. I am sure there are some rock-star stylists there, which makes an overall 3 star rating difficult. Couple things of note; the cut was average... it wasn't horrible, but wasn't what I expected. I enjoy the little details when visiting a salon... use a brush or dryer to get all the clippings cleaned up before you style (I shouldn't have hair falling on my shoulders 30 minutes after I leave); don't let a customer leave with (super) wet hair for example. It was my high expectation that led to a low rating... that said, I liked Aqua overall and will have to try them again. read more

I followed the reviews and decided to get my most expensive haircut ever. I know it was only 40 dollars but I'm used to only spending about 30 including tip. I LOVED THIS SALON. I've been looking for this haircut for years and never achieved it and so it was most def worth the price. Lisa who is now my full time hairstylist and she doesn't know it yet. I was a brand new client with a 4 pm appointment. At 3 pm the day of my appointment my new stylist called to ask if I could come at 430 instead as she was running behind. I agreed. I arrived at 430 and the receptionist told me she was just finishing up and would be with me in a minute. I sat on the sofa to wait. I waited 30 minutes with no further acknowledgment after my greeting. It was now a full hour after my initial appointment time. I got up and left. I had plans at 545. I privately messaged the salon that evening telling my story, and expressing my concerns and disappointment. Messenger showed it was immediately read. 24 hours later and no reply from them at all. Its stunning. There are plenty of salons in royal oak. Perhaps one who values my time and business would be a better choice for me. read more

I love this place. Lisa is not only an excellent stylist, she is the only person who I have allowed to cut my hair for the past five years or so (and she gets it perfect every time). I am kind of annoying about how I like it done and my hair is dead flat and not easy to achieve results with. But Lisa must be a wizard or a Jedi or something along those lines. Justine cut my hair and she did a fabulous job! I hadn't gotten my hair cut in 2.5 months, so my hair was a huge mess. She listened to my wishes and concerns and cut my hair perfectly. My highlights weren't exactly what I wanted (I wanted them to be a bit lighter), but she did a good job, nonetheless. The inside of the salon wasn't super-impressive, but I'd rather pay for a good haircut and color, than to pay for atmosphere. And in terms of the price, I got a great deal! I have been here twice with two different stylists (Julie and Emily) and they have both done a great job! The first time I went in my previous stylist was injured and would not be able to do my hair. So I went in based on a reco and saw Julie; she did a beautiful job with lots of blonde highlights and was very personable and friendly. Few months later I wanted to go red and Julie was not available, so I saw Emily. I wanted to keep some blond and have everything else go red. She did a fantastic job with my somewhat difficult request and I loved the results. I will be going back again and seeing either of these women, or even another stylist! I've been going to Christina for a few years now and think that she does an excellent job. She's very talented with highlights and does a good haircut, too. She's also very friendly. I think that their prices are very reasonable for the area (and I used to be a $20 haircut person!). $85 for a cut and highlights at a nice salon in the Royal Oak area is not bad at all. I also like that they don't try to sell you product (I've never gone anywhere where they weren't trying to sell stuff!) I really like the updates they made to the paint and decor in the salon and they no longer blast club music through the loudspeakers, which I used to hate. That said, I do have a few complaints. There is always hair on everything and in the corners. A good cleaning would go a long way! (I didn't notice this that much until I started watching Tabitha's Salon Takeover...now that's all I see!) It would also be nice if we could leave tips on our credit cards; it's rather annoying to have to use cash. read more

The definition of uber-trendy, which isn't my typical kind of place. But the stylists are fantastic; everyone knows your name (which may or may not be directly related to the $$ I fork over there) and they try to make you have fun and look good at the same time. I've been going to Matt since the fall. Not only is he hilarious, but also saved my color. I thought it was a great idea to try going brunette - (as a natural blonde, mind you) - at an Aveda salon. Three weeks later, I was washed out, dishwater, dirty diaper brown. It took 3 hours to correct, but soon I was back to my Barbie blonde self. Matt's also been doing micro-link extensions for me for a few months now too. I currently have them out because my boyfriend could no longer tolerate waiting an hour for me to dry my hair ... understandably. But he's very, very reasonably priced and they've looked fabulous every time I've had them put in/fixed up/added to. I'm not a permanent resident of Detroit, so I swing in Aqua when I need some good conversation or a little trim - it's good for both. read more

For four years I had a close friend come to my home to highlight and cut my hair. I was always very satisfied with the work she did but it was getting inconvenient working around her schedule, not mine. In August 2010, I decided it was time for a change... I started by doing some research into local salons. I wasn't entirely sure what I should expect to pay for full highlights and a trim since I was used to having my hair done at home - I knew I didn't want to pay over $100, but I wasn't sure if I was being unrealistic. I found Aqua during my search. The prices listed on Aqua's website were very enticing - they also had a half off coupon for Mondays which seemed like a heck of a deal and were local (living in Ferndale at the time). I read some reviews online, and decided to schedule an appointment with Martha. I did not have any trouble with them honoring my half off coupon and the first time I left with full highlights I paid $25. In my opinion, the prices at this salon are amazing. I had someone coming to my house and was supposedly paying for cost of color plus a little extra and I'd pay more than what I'm paying at this salon (and she wasn't using any special fancy dye or anything like that). I have never been unhappy with what Martha has done with my hair. She has a gift - I can walk in with a vague idea of what I want my hair to look like when I leave, and I walk out looking gorgeous. I completely trust her and know she wont let me leave with mediocre looking hair. She also has a great personality and doesn't let you just sit in the chair while she's working on your hair without saying a word. I moved to Auburn Hills last year and although it's not a crazy distance away, I will always make the drive to see Martha (and you should too!). I never feel like I am over paying - I don't think this is a 'you get what you pay for' kinda place, because the quality of my color and cut is always worth far more than what I end up paying. read more

I have only let one stylist touch my hair for the last five years, unfortunately I lost touch with her. I read up on all of the salons/barbers in Royal Oak and decided to give Aqua a try. I am a 29 year old male and I prefer a simple but modern cut; short with a fade up to about a half inch left on top. Ashley was my stylist and with very minimal instruction I let her get to work. She had me in and out in about 15 minutes and the cut was perfect. Very professional and I could sense her confidence while cutting. Getting my hair done with her was seriously like visiting a good friend every three months, complete with catching up, fun banter, and deep conversations while she worked her magic. Hell, I even got my husband to go to her and he loved her! Her head and neck massage during shampooing are magical, and she's perfect to bounce ideas off of when you're thinking about a new style. I even had her plan my wedding hair, and it was a blast! Apparently, if you have less than straight hair you won't be serviced. I rushed to get to my appt. at 4:30pm only to leave at 4:35pm. I am African American and wanted my hair dyed. I was given every reason in the book as to why she couldn't work on my "type of hair". In addition, if she did anything it would "cost a lot of money". Why would my visit be more expensive than any one else? Hmmm....Let me think. If you are a stylist, you need to educate yourself on all types of hair. Just saying. I am never setting foot in this establishment again! I'm not usually someone who likes to give negative reviews but this was my worst experience... By far!!! I was in need of a quick root color and highlights before a next day business trip and this place happens to be right by my house. Carmen did my base color, a couple of highlights here and there, and after she gave me a blow dry I realized that MY ROOTS WERE STILL SHOWING! When I told her about it she said that she was giving me a natural blonde look and natural blondes always have roots( REALLY? I have really dark roots so my blonde did not look natural at all!) but it was getting late and didn't have time to argue with her since I still had to go home and pack for my trip. Oh and she also charged me $100 because according to her she " fixed my haircolor"- I couldn't wait to get back from my trip to call and ask her if she could fix the job to which she bluntly refused saying that she can't fix the roots after 3 weeks ( it had only been 7 days!) , then she also DENIED the fact that my roots were showing when I left the salon ( what happened to "I was trying to give you a natural blonde look and left the roots showing on purpose"?) then she changed her story and told me she couldn't take me because " I don't know what I want!" ( how about blonde hair with no dark roots please?)- Anyway I ended up going to Pure salon to get my color fixed (thank you Nicole!) but I wasn't very happy that I had spent over $200 on my hair in the course of 10 days! So I called back Aqua to get a refund on a service poorly provided, ( and for being treated so rudely- seriously who treats customers that way????) and they said the owner's wife would call me to process my refund. 6 months later... Aqua was fantastic! Lisa was my stylist and she did a great job. I expressed that I was a new client (just moved here) and was worried about how my cut turn out. She was really attentive and made sure to ask how everything was looking throughout the cut. The music was bumping and the price was right. Been coming here 8 years and 40-50 cuts by now. In that time a men's cut went up a mere 5 bucks. It's now just 25 a cut which is still cheaper than other salons in downtown Royal Oak. Everybody's always friendly and the service is fantastic. You're able to get in and get right out on your schedule time. I believe the longest I've ever had to wait for an appointment was a week or two. There was a time I had to wait more but she did have a baby; I saw that she is planning on another soon, and should be taking 8 weeks off. I'll, merely, have to get in before she departs, and schedule an appointment the week she gets back. If I was on a monthly schedule like many are, then I wouldn't worry because there are plenty of quality salon stylists here that could pick me up in the ibterem. I was a and there was a new hire new stylist there who was greeting everybody and trying to get some recognition, Adrian was her name. A mixed bag. Good haircut, dirty salon, wouldn't honor their own half off offer. I got a nice haircut from Ahsley, who listened carefully to what I wanted. She gave me a nice cut, and was easy to work with. The reviewer who noted hair on the floor (normal in a salon) is right. It's in all the corners, too. When I got a brow wax, they were surprised when I asked for a towel to be put on the fabric cushion behind my head. I was surprised that I had to ask. The treatment room also had hair on the floor, and the bottles had gooey stuff caked on the dispensers. Also, the web site says half off any service on Mondays in Royal Oak -- just checked and it's still there. The salon said they didn't know anything about that, and refused to honor that.
