From the refacing of a genuinely hideous building, to the gorgeous bar as centerpiece, to the fine glass work on the doors, and the spare but cozy furnishings the place just felt right. They even had the good sense to not demean their staff by requiring them to dress like serving wenches and stable boys (I'm looking at you Halifax Alehouse). The food is above average pub fare. The first time I was in Durty Nelly's I was blown away by how big it is. It's a huge bar/restaurant with lots of seating and tables. A little history about it, if you're not aware of this already, it was actually built in Ireland. That is how they can be called an authentic Irish pub - without really having an authentic Irish menu! Although, they do offer some Irish items. Irish menu or not - it's a good menu, and pretty large. Nobody should have a problem finding something they like on it. I've actually only eaten there once (every other time was just for drinks!) I had the blackened chicken sandwich; my friend Ashley M. did as well and we both had different reviews of it. She wasn't a huge fan of the spices, but I really enjoyed its flavor. We both had the sweet potato fries, which were quite yummy; the dipping sauce for them was even yummier! All of the staff I have encountered have been great; they make pretty good drinks! Lunchtime review: Worst fish and chips I have ever had. I'm going to preface this by advising that I'm not a fussy patron or a fussy eater and I enjoy almost anything with a high tolerance for what others might consider issues. I tend not to review every place and almost all of mine so far are written just because I enjoyed meals or atmosphere so much. That being said this one is the result of two issues I had with Durty Nelly's today: The first issue didn't influence my review of the food. I was decidedly over the first complaint by the time I was ready to tuck in and enjoy a delicious battered 2 piecer and I would never have written about it if the food had been good. 1) I was with a group of 10 or so people and the rest of the place was almost empty. There was a large TV facing me from across the room and it seemed like non-stop annoying commercials and a bit of sports, so I asked a server if I can turn it off. She turned to me with an incredulous look "we can't turn it off". I said "it's so annoying and no one is watching" and just got a half a chuckle and a no in response, Strike 1 - when I come to your restaurant or bar I want to enjoy the company of my friends, the food, the ambiance, not be forced to stare a friggin' TV streaming commercials at my face. When will establishments every learn this? TVs belong in sports bars. 2) I had fish and chips at $12. Dis-gus-ting! The fries were limp, barely warm and dripping with grease. The 2 small pieces of "fish" were overcooked, extremely salty, tasted like something from the bottom of the freezer and had all the texture of shredded cardboard. Me=cast iron stomach and for the first time ever I was unwilling to finish this disgusting meal. I was so 'moved' by this I actually took a photo but don't see how to post it. First things first, I came here with 5 of my friends late on a Saturday night and granted it's a bad time of the night to visit a bar in downtown Halifax but.. There is no reason to heard people around like cows in a barn yard every 15 minutes, we ordered drinks from the bar and went outside to sit on the patio, a server then came up too ya and asked us to move inside as the night was slowly coming to an end. We gathered up all our stuff and moved to the window inside, no big deal right right? Then we were asked to move from out window seat further inside the establishment... once again like an old episode of little house on the prairie we gathered up all our stuff and wagon hitched our way further inside. After sitting for about 20 minutes some of us went out for a cigarette, the man at the door didn't let them back in. They instructed the staff at the front they had a table, stuff and friends waiting inside but were met with difficult obstacles from staff. After they were let back in the lights turned on and it was time to go, when we went to use the washrooms before leaving the staff told us they were closed.... Like come on.... you can't herd people around all night, block them from coming back inside to get there stuff and then tell them they can't use the washroom... I understand that everyone works hard and dealing with drunk dummies on a daily basis is a pain to work with, but it all starts with treating people with some level of respect. Vibe - 4.5 Drinks - 3.0 Cleanness - 1.0 I'm visiting from Toronto but if this place is still open when I return in a year I'll come back but I won't hold my hopes up. read more

I was falsely accused of throwing up in the bathroom and thrown out of the restaurant aggressively. I asked if I could speak to the manager and was refuse. I don't think a bar/restaurant should be allowed to treat a customer that poorly. The reason I was falsely accused was because I was worried the same coloured shirt as someone else apparently, no explanation or consideration from the service when I tried to defend myself. read more

After spending the afternoon at the Buskers on Sunday, my boyfriend and I did not want to spend an arm and a leg at the food places along the waterfront (they have to rip off tourists some how), so we walked up to Durty Nelly's. We had my boyfriend's daughter with us so we were not sure at first if it would be a good fit, but it was not busy and it was still early dinner time (4:30pm). We sat inside and were given menus after waiting about 5 minutes. We decided on two orders of the fish and chips. We split this, so we each had 1 piece and a bit, with the fries. The fish itself was okay, but I have had better (John's lunch/Classic Fish&Chips). The fries were typical fries and the portion was small. I did enjoy the coleslaw but was not a fan of the tartar sauce. The total came to $42.00 with tip, 1 soft drink, and 1 chocolate milk. That is a bit steep but cheaper than spending money down at the buskers on food and not having anywhere to sit and eat. The service was okay but we had to wait awhile for refills. It seemed like the servers were more concerned with the diners on the balcony than they were with the diners in the restaurant. Overall, I was expecting more but I do want to go back to try some other items and will hopefully update this review with another star or two. read more

A History Writer finds history in Halifax It wasn't part of my itinerary. It wasn't part of my research. But the moment I walked in, I knew it had to be part of my book. My name is Alan N. Kay. I am a local, state and National (the States, sorry. ) award winning History teacher and author. Just recently I released a historical novel that takes place, among other places, in Halifax. Halifax, as you know so well, is a beautiful city, filled with its own rich history. It was a no brainer for me to include her in my book. Indeed, the plot in my book Neither King Nor Country involves a secret from the American Revolution that could change the very border between the United States and Canada. It is a secret buried in Canada's Loyalist past and my character has somehow stumbled upon it. Where else to begin his quest, than Halifax? The issue, of course, was where would my main characters go when they arrived? What hotel, what restaurant, what historical monument would be the place where I would want to go upon first arriving. I wanted the location to be one that had its own history, that fit into the "vibe" of friendly and historic Halifax and would be a realistic place for a visitor to go shortly after arrival. The answer was obvious: Durty Nelly's. I had been to Durty Nelly's on my first visit to Halifax. As a history teacher and part Irishman it seemed a natural place to go. But years later, as I was doing the research for my book, Durty Nelly's kept popping into my head. The fit was just perfect. Nelly's has character. Nelly's has history. It is unique and most importantly it is welcoming. Here is how my character sees Nelly's (Chapter 21): "Deborah stood in the middle of the Pub and gawked. She had never seen an Irish Pub like this before. The dark wood circular bar was freshly polished, almost glowing, the wooden barstools, made of the same material, looked sturdy enough to hold a 500 pound Irish man and the tan colored oak hardwood floors were so clean she could almost see her reflection. There were Celtic signs carved into the pillars and a wall of multi-colored liquors that stretched from one end of the pub to the other. It was ornate as well. Golden paint adorned all the walls, pillars and bar stools. Two by two square tile artwork was interwoven throughout the hardwood floor and even the bar stools and booths had fine blue fabric seats. It was as if every piece of carved wood, seat, and bar stool was straight from a pub in Ireland. And indeed it was, she quickly learned from one of the signs on the wall. Durty Nelly's, the sign had read, an authentic Dublin Pub built in the city itself and then shipped directly to Canada. It was, according to the man she was supposed to meet, a must visit drinking hole for anyone who was visiting Halifax." After publication of Neither King Nor Country, I contacted Durty Nelly's. Whenever you write fiction that is based on actual events or in this case, actual places, there is a real anxious nervous moment when you wonder if you did justice to your subject or worse got something wrong. One of the owners of Durty Nelly's, Joe McGuinness, contacted me a little while later. He was thrilled to discover a book that discussed his pub and would be happy to read it. He gave me the address, I mailed him a copy and within days of receiving it, he sent me a picture of himself happily reading the book at a table outside the pub. I tell you this last part, because it amplifies what I have already said about Durty Nelly's. Many businesses never return your correspondence. Many more do not seem to care that you write about them or that they are featured in any book, especially a fiction book. This was not the case with Joe. He was warm, welcoming and inviting, just like his pub. (Can't wait to sit down and have a pint with you Joe!) Of course, the pub is not the only place my characters go in Halifax. They spend time at the fort, go skating around the oval and even roll down the hill on their way there. Halifax is just the perfect city for anyone, tourist or businessman, family or single. This place is very different inside than it appears from the outside, very clean and spacious. I sat at the bar and the bartenders could not have been friendlier. Pretty good selection of beer, with some things you wouldn't necessarily expect to find at an Irish bar. Food was fine, nothing too crazy, I think I should have gone with the fish bites, but the chicken tenders I had were good. Outside seating is available, although the one side currently looks out onto the big construction zone for the new Convention Center. If I am in the area again, would certainly go again. Between this and Foggy Goggles, as well as some other options, probably the best block I found in Halifax as far as bar/restaurant options. read more

We had a such a great time here! It was a Saturday night and there was live music. Really, really, great live music! My little girls were able to stay until 9pm and the it turns 21 and up only. They danced and people took turns holding them and swinging them. They had a ball and did not want to leave. Everyone was so nice including our pretty waitress. I wish I got her name. I had the nut burger with curry ketchup and upgraded for the sweet potato fries which was a very good idea!!! Highly recommend them! The burger huge but was a tad on the dry side. I added some of that yummy curry ketchup and I was good to go. Kiddos split the nachos and they weren't kidding when they say "effin big". I also had a local beer on draft that was delish. Steamboat I believe. The waitress suggested it. Yum We would definitely come back here if we are ever in Halifax again. It was a reeeeeally fun night!! It definitely became VERY crowded as we were leaving at 9pm on a Saturday night so if you're dinning, maybe look into reservations. Love going here...what can I say? Live music, delicious food and reasonable drinks. Not to mention they have one of the best patios for people watching in Hali! I have been here on numerous of occasions and have yet to be disappointed. It is, in appearance, just your typical pub. But Nelly's is so much more. Full of personality, from the bartenders to the live musicians that stream through their doors. The crowd is always up for a good time and a wide variety of people all there to drink, eat and be merry! The food is delicious and, while it is your typical pub fare, it is very well done! I have never had a meal that was poorly cooked or anything but fantastic! For the price it is really worth the visit! Sometimes finding a seat can be difficult, but everyone is so friendly you can most likely borrow chairs, or just join another group! Why not, right?? Next time you are out and need a spot to cool off with a brewsky and some fish and chips...May I suggest Durty Nelly's, I promise you will be happy you went! read more

Went for a drink with a couple friends and I had a great time while inside, the live music was great, after leaving the establishment prior to having two drinks I was denied re-attmitance by a security guard who claimed I had "staggered" out of the establishment moments earlier, just moments before making this review. I was both annoyed and upset by the sheer display of "power" by the bouncer as well as the sheer ignorance displayed by him when requesting to re-enter to find my missing friend, roughly thirty minutes later my friend re-appeared. I really enjoy both the drinks and service here but my friends and I refuse to return again as I honestly feel both offended and partially upset by the intimidation tactics employed by the "security" staff. read more

Was downtown and hoping to get some delicious brunch. The original plan was kiboshed by almost an hour wait for food. So we ended up at Durty Nelly's. Walked in and it wasn't nearly as busy as the place we just tried (rhymes with Stubborn Boat). Grabbed seats and perused the brunch menu. Nothing particular stuck out. Usual pub brunch fare (which doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing). During the peruse, noticed 'white pudding' on the menu - caught my attention (as well as the GFs). Asked the server about it, she described it as a blend of meats, oats, and spices. Sounded delicious. Went for the Irish Breakfast and the GF got the mini Irish breakfast. 10 minutes pass, 20 minutes pass, still no food. I think we must've waited around 30-40 mins for the food to come out - at which point we both said we might as well have stayed and waited at The Boat. Lo and behold the Irish breakfast in all it's mediocrity. Which was almost the exact same size as the mini version less one egg. Verdict of the white pudding: the deep, burning disappointment that I can imagine that only parents can appreciate. 2/5 would not brunch here again. read more

I ate here twice while I was in town. The fish and chips are absolutely phenomenal! The fish was so fresh and mild tasting also fried perfectly without being overly greasy. Guinness on tap and friendly bartenders make this an awesome place to be. It does get really crowded though. Like good luck finding a seat if you come at 7 or 8 crowded. I had the banoffee pie to go. Not as good as it used to be. Used to visit DN's for a special treat. Great music, food and drink, but tonight was disappointing. They no longer serve HopBot IPA which I really liked. They didn't have any non-alcoholic beer for our driver (not looking for an array of taps just a few bottles as an alternative to water or coke). The food is getting expensive especially the nachos which cost us $28 and was the not as special as they would like you to think. I think "Big Effin Nachos" was a rip-off. Not as good as the Henry house pub which only charges $16. My guest had the salad which she left most of it as it was dry and bland. Band wasn't as good as they've been in the past, not the same atmosphere and failing to get people up and dancing. All in all this place had better get their act together and stop resting on their laurels. read more

Had a "Dirty O'l Burger" taste was very good, but serving it with fries in the basket on the plate was a bit of a overkill! Very uncomfortable to handle! Whenever you want to cut a burger the basket with fries was in the way! And it kept sliding around on the plate! Service was good and in time, beer was cold and plenty - very good experience! Once you get into the menu, the only item that seems to have won an award was the seafood chowder, but I didn't try it. Seasoned waffle fries sounded great, though, and I got those as a side to my tandoori chicken wrap. Fries definitely were not seasoned and not particularly hot, tandoori wrap tasted barely seasoned too. So my take is it's probably a much better place to drink. Slainte! read more

I don't often give pubs 4 stars, but I will here because the food is a bit better than average overall I find, service always friendly, atmosphere can be energizing even on a quiet rainy afternoon (or is it the beer that makes one feel that way? lol), lots of space (seating for 100?), pretty traditional with its actual mainwooden bar brought in from Ireland. I've had many lunches and suppers here over the years, a staff xmas party where they provided tabled hors d'oevres to pick and a curtain to separate us from the public, and many later nights of alcohol. They have several outdoor tables that run along the side in the summer which are usually pretty busy. The menu has standard North American fare and some traditional Irish dishes, usually that taste quite good and are priced low to mid range. Good bar selection. The bathrooms are quite nice for a pub as well. This is just one of Halifax's better pubs in general. My goal is to come for St Paddy's Day breakfast some year. read more

Came here for the music, but it was crowded and sitting close to the music, it was intolerably loud. We found a table outside, near the door and could hear the seissun pretty well. We shared salmon with roast vegetables, which was delicious and they offered to give us extra vegetables instead of potatoes. My Irish coffee was made as I requested. Service was friendly. I'm sorry, Durty Nelly's, but I think this is the last straw. I was at the bar with three friends, enjoying a night out for a few drinks. We didn't want to go to a club, so we thought this would be a good place. Drinks were great and the food was okay. The service was prompt which was good, but our server never came to ask how our food was. We had to wave her down to get a bit of attention and drink refills. And when it's busy, I don't mind if the server isn't always there, but this was not so great. What really did it for me was one comment. One thing should be clear: my friends and I are all students, so we don't get to go out that often, usually because of time and money, which also makes tipping minimal. When we got our bills, my friends felt a bit embarrassed because they knew that they don't have enough to tip, so I said I would give a little bit more to make up. When our server came back, we paid and I left a tip. When we were done and she was about to leave our table, she looked at my three friends and said very coldly, "Sorry you had such terrible service," and then left. This past weekend I ventured to" the dirty" ... No no not the Dome, but Durty Nelly's. Durty nelly's claims to be an Irish bar, however it seems to me that it has zero irish Celtic charm. Last I checked playing guns and roses durring the dinner rush isn't very irish nor Celtic. The overall layout of the place is a bit strange and not the most ideal come happy hour , when you're trying to fight your way through the crowds. Be advised by nine o'clock it's wall to wall packed, and the chance of getting a table are slim pickings. However Durty nelly's has a few things that are great. The food is is mighty tasty, I ordered the chicken and brie sandwich with a side spinach salad. Five stars for the meal ! They also have a fairly large beer selection of that's your thing , and the staff are friendly and helpful. All in all Durty nelly's is an ok spot for a late lunch or an after work beer. However if you are looking to try some Irish dishes or hear some Celtic tunes I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

I always have a great time at Dirty Nelly's! At 26, I've done the sticky dance floor, top 40 blasting, screaming froshers bar thing one too many times, and I'm pretty over the nightclub scene. Blame it on my new found maturity, but now when I go out I look for a lively pub with great music and adult'ish' conversation. Dirty Nelly's is my pub of choice for a few reasons: 1. The location: I love being in the heart of downtown without having to deal with the usual downtown BS (long line-ups, cover charge, crying drunk girls fighting with musclehead boyfriends who wouldn't be caught dead without their bedazzled Affliction t-shirts... but I digress). Dirty Nelly's offers the best of both worlds. 2. The staff: I have a few friends who work at Nelly's (so my opinion isn't totally unbiased), but the bartenders are always wicked fast and professional. They hire based on experience, so whether you want a Guinness or an unusual cocktail, these bartenders are sure to please. 3. The patrons: The crowd at Nelly's is always boisterous, yet drama-free. Nelly's is also the favoured watering-hole for Halifax's Irish population, and that adds to its appeal - I just love an Irish accent! 4. The food: This gastropub really has its s**t together! Their menu is simple, yet well-executed and I haven't been disappointed yet. In Sum: Maybe it's the luck of the Irish, but Dirty Nelly's makes me one very happy gal. read more

I actually LOVE this place. The atmosphere is also fantastic- with a buzz in the air. It's not dirty like many other pubs, their bathrooms even have dyson hand dryers and tvs. I like it. So with all the wood being from different parts of Ireland, I like the authentic feel and not the cheesie "everything in here says Guinness and shamrock" feel that other pubs (e.g. Pogue) give you. Servers are always great- and do an amazing job juggling that many people- scattered all around the place. Literally, people are everywhere. They also have a decently sized patio which I enjoy in the summer. Now the food and drink- fantastic. I love their unique cocktails and they have a great beer selections. Wine is pretty cheap too! The food never disappoints. The flatbreads are scrumptious, and they have an awesome variety for apps. Blarney chips being a drinking favorite. Such character, such atmosphere, such class. So many "Irish" pubs come across tacky in their attempt to be traditional. Not this place. Natural wood everywhere, take a look at the back tables, they actually have tree trunks as table legs. Cool. Another small detail, coat hooks at the bar stools for your coat and hat... just like so many of the little pubs I've visited in Europe. Oh, and the place is clean, despite the name. I've tried several dishes here, the burger is AMAZING. The Steak & Guinness pie is more of a stew with a biscuit top, but delicious none the less. The service here is always friendly and attentive. My server even recognized me (I think she more recognized my etch-a-sketch iphone case) which made me feel appreciated. Great beer selection hitting all of the popular Irish beers and some other excellent imports. They have wi-fi, but it's password protected, didn't ask if it was public. Durty Nelly's is a little different than other Irish Pub's around the city, mainly because it was designed and built in Ireland itself. Prior to my first frequent, I'd actually heard an interview on CBC Radio with a company in Ireland who outsources the Irish Pub experience to international business owners looking for authentic flavour. It was quite an interesting listen, and it wasn't until visiting Durty Nelly's that I realized this was the same company behind it all. Esthetically pleasing, Nelly's boasts ample seating, one gigantic bar, a sectioned "deck" for live music, and a relaxed sense of ambiance. A balance of rich woods and marbled accents ad a nice touch. With a large flat screen towards the back, and the vast amounts of comfortable seating, this would be a fine place to watch the game with a few beers. Points for the washrooms as well. Pristinely clean with marbled countertops are not the typical pub style loo. There is even a flat screen built into the wall, and stationed to the women's network-- if you're not interested in the game. One of my male accomplices reported flat screens above every urinal in the mens washroom. Wow... can't anybody wait for the commercials anymore? All in all, Durty Nelly's unites class with casual. The design is well thought out, as it keeps things fresh but maintains a traditional Irish Pub feel. The menu appears as upscale pub food, nothing too wild, but passing platters appeared to have nice presentation and appeal. Friendly staff-- the bartender had no problem getting me a new drink after I asked him if there was a extra flavouring in my vodka water with lime. And he remembered for the second time as well! Even the bouncers were nice here. Although this is not a spot I'll likely frequent, it served as a great time and I was very impressed in every way possible. There are things I love about Durty Nelly's, and things I hate. Let's start with the love: - A pretty decent menu. I tried the chicken wings recently and they were delicious! - A lovely outdoor patio. - Strongbow cider on tap! So I like Durty Nelly's for lunch, outdoor summer day-drinking, or early evening apps and drinks. But get me out of there by 9pm, or we'll have a problem. It can get too crowded for me, and getting to the bar for a drink becomes a mission. OK, I guess when I really think about it, that is my only complaint. But it's a big one. I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review of one of my favorite bars in the city! In terms of food, I've only eaten at Dirty's on a few occasions but have yet to try something that I didn't like. What I enjoy most about Dirty Nelly's is the atmosphere. Whether your out for a night out with friends or just grabbing a drink with colleagues after work, it's one of the best places to go in the city. The crowd is more mature than some locations in the city so you never have to worry about rowdy or obnoxious patrons. So far I've been fairly lucky at snagging a seat on a busy Saturday night but I would definitely wait around to get in if necessary! The dance floor is small but great, the band is always energetic and the servers are fantastic! I went in one night with a few of the girls and our server blew us away with her drink choices. She made great drink suggestions and substitutions (including raspberry vodka instead of regular in a cosmo... do it!) that after a few orders we were just trusting in her to bring us something fun! If you like Ruben sandwiches ,don't order one here. Big disappointment Two pieces of poorly cut corn beef with very soggy toasted bread, not even rye bread. Durty Nelly's - Irish Near Me - Halifax, Nova Scotia

Considering there are so many pubs downtown, it can be tough to pick one and I imagine the competition for customers is fierce. However, there are a few places downtown that are "die-hards" for me and DN's has become one of those places. Anytime I have been there, it has been full of people conducting lively chatter and listening to a great band. To be honest, given this criteria, you could be in ANY pub downtown (they can all feel a little homogenous in that way). But one thing that sets DN's apart is their atmosphere - it feels so cozy and warm, like a library - all dark wood, amber/low lighting, and pretty stained-glass windows. You step inside, order a pint and are immediately transported to the Irish countryside. You almost expect to turn around the see a table of tweed-clad farmers discussing football or something. The last time I was there I had their sweet potato fries, which were delicious (give the Old Triangle's a run for their money!) and they have a good selection of beer. The service was quite prompt considering how busy it was. We sat inside, but I have sat on the patio before and it's in a nice location - you're blocked from the wind/damp coming off the harbour, and you are in line with the other colourful patios of the Argyle St district so there is usually some neat people-watching to be had and fun energy to absorb. However, the last time I was there it was also extremely loud - I had to yell at the people next to me in order for them to hear what I was saying, which was a little annoying, especially since we were on the opposite end of the bar from the band. So, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a place to have an extensive conversation (at least not on Saturday night) unless you are comfortable having your faces within inches of each other and yelling into one another's ears. But if you want to hear some great music, have a drink, snack and a few laughs, this is a great choice! read more
