My brother and I stayed at the Durango KOA in a deluxe studio cabin for 4 nights--just left today. And although most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, I feel compelled to share that there was an incident while we were there that made me feel unwelcome. We arrived on Weds. 6/28 and as we were unpacking the car, I got stung on the wrist by a wasp going up the steps to the cabin. It was unpleasant but thankfully I'm not allergic so was able to deal with it with a bit of discomfort. The next day after a great mountain bike ride--I was again going up the steps and got stung twice on the back of the leg. I ran inside the cabin, and my brother discovered that there was a wasp nest under the banister of the steps and another under one of the steps. I guess I was just the unlucky one to get stung twice. We called the office and told them about the problem and let the folks know that we'd like them to come and spray and remove the nests. We went to dinner and came back about 2 hours later, and when we checked the nests--they appeared to have been sprayed but the nests had not been removed. We went up to the office and spoke with Carol and asked her to please come and remove the nests. I was a bit surprised that she didn't apologize but she said that they would come and take the nests away. When I got back to the cabin, as I waited for them to come to deal with the wasps, I thought about it more--and felt that I had to point out that getting stung twice by wasps should merit some sort of apology. I don't fault the KOA for the wasps being there, but what happened next was really disconcerting. I called the office and expressed that it seemed like they might extend some sort of gesture to a guest that had experienced this problem. Carol showed up at my cabin door about 10 minutes later, and said she was sorry that I didn't like the way she had handled the situation--but did not extend an apology to me. I shared that had I been allergic this could have been a very serious situation. I suggested that she might consider offering me a small refund as a gesture of her concern. She walked away from me and said "I don't think so" as she got back into her cart to leave. Clearly, this situation could have been handled more appropriately. Even if Carol felt that she could not offer me a refund she could have explained that in a more customer service oriented manner. Instead she left me feeling like I had inconvenienced her by getting stung by wasps multiple times and that my discomfort was really of no concern to her. I'm not sure why Carol acted in this manner, but it definitely made me feel unwelcome--and I'm sure that KOA's in general strive for an opposite impression. The cabin was very nice and comfortable other than this incident--and I hope others do not encounter this type of situation. read more
