came in with my daughter to buy a new violin and we waited for 15 minutes to be acknowledged, we got eye contact, and we got ignored, no greeting, no help while we waited and nothing as we walked out. I called the owner after we left to let him know what just happened. I was sent an apology via text by someone, and offered a $20 gift card. Which I declined since I bought a new violin elsewhere already. Would not recommend. read more

Dunkley claims to do guitar repair. I brought my guitar in for repair. I was informed that the repair technician wasn't in. Instead of them calling the repair tech, they told me I had to. I called the number they gave. It was the correct number because the voice message on the voice mail stated who I was reaching. I left a clear voice mail with my contact information. I never received a call. It has been over a month now. I will find services else where. Don't waste your time going to Dunkley. read more

Several years ago when I was running a private performing arts High School, I was able to purchase my first piano, a Yamaha 6 ft baby grand. I LOVED my piano, but in my last few years in a small Portland, OR apartment, it became too much to manage and I had to sell it. The last few years have been really tough, not being able to practice or write music really. Last month, I decided to buy the bullet and look for another instrument. I didn't have the money for a baby grand, and so I was looking at uprights and hybrid pianos. Hybrids are cool, because the have the convenience of technology with ever improving sound. I had been looking at the Yamaha version but found a new Kawai instrument called the Novus NV10. I went to Dunkleys to demo it, and then again to a local University to try it out again. It is leaps and bounds better than anything else out there, and when it was time to buy, the folks at Dunkleys were awesome in helping me get financing, and buy my new baby!!! They set up delivery, and even took our old upright and facilitated a new home for it as well! The best part about Dunkleys is the sales people are extremely knowledgeable about the instruments, and work with you to make sure it's a good fit between instrument and buyer. We have a spinet piano that was in our family for generations. When one of the drop lifter elbows broke inside, we decided to schedule an appointment for one of Dunkley's piano technicians to come out for a tuning and replace the damaged part. I called Dunkley's to make the appointment and the gentleman on the other end was very rude and condescending. He said that the next available appointment would not be for another two months. TWO MONTHS. Whatever, so we would have to live with a broken key for a while... we went ahead with the appointment. Two months later the technician arrived at our house as scheduled, having been given advance word about what the problem was with our piano. Instead of giving a detailed estimate for the repair and doing the servicing we requested, he gave us a condescending lecture about how he suspected the problem was with the drop lifter elbow but that we would be wasting money to replace parts made from old plastic. He said that we should either haul the piano straight to the dump or keep it as a decorative piece since the wood was in such good shape. When my wife asked him if he could just fix the one damaged key and forget about tuning it since it seemed there'd be no way to ask that much of him, he responded, "no I don't have the part and quite frankly I'm over 65 and I won't get down there anyway, especially with this old piano." What? So if you don't even want to get down there in the first place, knowing this was required ahead of time, then why even bother to come out and waste 20 minutes of our time? He then proceeded to "do us a favor" and listed out several "nice" pianos back at the showroom floor for us to check out. That's not all though... he even pulled out his cellphone and called the sales manager to give him a heads-up that we were coming in, along with our names and contact information, just like a used car salesman would. The new pianos he listed at the showroom ranged in price from $4,000 to just under $10,000. When he left we did some research and found a pack of 12 replacement drop lifter elbows online for under $6. My wife also found several YouTube videos that show just how simple it is to replace these yourself in a matter of minutes. Apparently this is a common problem with a simple solution that anyone can fix. My father-in-law had also replaced some other drop lifter elbows a few years ago and the piano worked good as new. So essentially we called out a company that specializes in this kind of work only to experience a technician who was clearly not interested in a simple repair job but was more than happy to refer us to the showroom to sell us a new piano. Please, we weren't as dumb and gullible as this guy thought we were, and he more than likely gets a commission for sales references. The only positive that came out of this experience was that he waived the $70 service call fee, and only because he thought he could sell us a new piano. These people are definitely not worth your time. Do some research and get a second opinion elsewhere. read more

Great selection in their new location. Their sales staff has been as happy to show me a 75.00 ukulele as they have a 7000.00 Kawai piano. A few years ago, I was just beginning to shop for my first 'real' piano-and I didn't know diddly. But Mona (who has since retired) spent a great deal of time showing me the differences between all the different brands, including some $$$ Steinways. Three years ago was the first time I went looking for organ music at Dunkley's. It was all Gordon Young with a few 'collections' for pianists trying to play organ, so no pedal line. WTH. I guess it was partly culture shock, as Portland has Sheet Music Service, which is da bomb, who keep a full time person for organ/choral sheet music alone. Of course it IS a warehouse of sheet music with a huge demand in the area. About a year ago I started hearing, they have good deals on used pianos (they do have some very fine samples). Then I had to buy stuff on short notice, and the sheet music, it was better. ? Then a few weeks ago I had to buy more sheet music on short notice, and found multiple bits of usable material. I don't know. Maybe I complained to the right set of ears, but now they're stocking Barenreiter, which is basically the standard for Bach organ music. So hey, maybe they aren't terrible after all. read more
