The drinks, the Segura Brut Cava and the Lagunitas IPA, came quickly and we then went to the mains. My first choice main was the Spare Rib with mashers and Deb's the Chicken Fried Wagyu but unfortunately they were out of the CFW and instead she went with the Fish and Chips. Well, the mains were both excellent......both the Fish and the Chips were crisp and not greasy and accompanied by 2 sauces and a vinegar! The Spare Rib was perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes and accompanying sauce was perfect. We had settled on splitting a dessert, the Carrot Cake, but they were out of it so we settled on the Bourbon Pecan Pie....Wow! It was excellent. The batter was a nice consistency, but lacked seasoning, so very bland. The dips were good. A couple of us had the small appetite plate, with salad, soup and a half a sandwich. We got tomato basil soup and a BLT and added avocado. The salad and sandwich were good. The soup was so salty I couldn't eat it. One person got the catfish plate with green beans and pasta salad. The green beans were canned and mushy. Those same canned green beans were in the pasta salad. The fish was so salty it was inedible. Just overall not a good experience. The place feels old and dingy. Anyway, it was a glorious day after 3 days of good soaking rain, which we badly needed in the hill country. The food has always been top notch grade here. The service is very efficient and professional. As for the ambience, the inside is bright and well lighted but to be impressed, you have to go outside. Since it was a glorious day of bright sunshine, coolish temperature and a very friendly breeze blowing, we had a time walking around the area. The surrounding area was lush and very green after the few days of rain! We had a lovely time taking pictures. My brother in law was very surprised about the camel story behind Camp Verde. Camels were used as experimental animals to carry provisions in the 1850's. They were stationed in this area. Unfortunately, the experiment failed because the soldiers hated the camels, who had a reportedly nasty disposition and soldiers ended up with motion sickness because of the animal's unusual walking gait. If you want to visit the area, now is a good time before the summer heat gets here. FYI, if you like Christmas, the gift shop here gets an early start in October! If you like Christmas decorations like my wife, come here and shop. They really fill up the gift shop with goodies!

My disappointment and they subtraction of a star came from the pastries I purchased to share with the family. My mom's favorites used to be the scones, but the past few times she had them she said they were very dry. The last time I was there, I got her a blueberry muffin which she said was delicious. So, on this trip, I got the coffee cake) which we had had before and loved) as well as another blueberry muffin for my mom. Sadly everything was horribly dry. I don't know if perhaps they were left over from the day before or just not cooked right but they certainly weren't good and after a couple of bites, ended up in the trash. I will continue to buy coffee at Pax, but I'm giving up on the pastries.
