Don't be discouraged by the rundown plaza and the outside of the restaurant because the food here is amazing! I used to frequent this place when I worked in mountain view and had it again recently and it brought me back to lifeeeee. There's a variety of good shanghainese dishes that are packed full of flavor. For once you should over order at this place because you'll be glad you'll have leftovers the next day to enjoy too. Would you go eat out with a group headed by a vegetarian? Wife thought this was Old Town Shanghai on Mary in Sunnyvale when signing up on the Meetup group Castro Social to go to this restaurant. Went out with the six people of the group organized by Anna G, whom neither the wife nor I knew before hand was vegetarian. Hole in the wall place in shopping center on Rengstorff and Central next to the railroad tracks, with traffic backed up on all four sides. Took 6 minutes to get through the railroad crossing signals heading north on Rengstorff during rush hour waiting through two passing trains. Avoid rush hour railroad crossings at Mary, Castro and Rengstorff by crossing over the railroad tracks to Central through Shoreline. You can also use Mathilda in Sunnyvale or San Antonio in Palo Alto. Restaurant minimal ambiance, drafty with cold air coming inside the small eating area whenever anyone entered the glass front door. Temperature hot food had to be eaten immediately otherwise it wouldn't taste good, when it got cold. Ordered food at 5:25. Dishes arrived at 5:39 and shortly afterwards, except the Shanghai Pan fried soup dumplings and Cantonese shrimp dumplings which arrived at 6:09. $11 vegetable chow mein -standard fare, but small portion. $7 green onion pancakes -temperature hot and crispy, could have used more green onions but otherwise perfect. $14 cumin lamb -tasty mixture of thin slices of lamb and a heavy dose of cooked white onions with hot chilis to make it more spicy. $8 vegetable pot sticker -pan fried and firm, but didn't taste it. $9 marinated beef pancake roll -this was more of a wrap. I'm still new to the whole dumpling/dim sum game so I can't say what is good and what isn't so good and am only going by what I have had. I've been on a potsticker and siu mai kick the last few weeks ever since the Sunnyvale Farmer's Market got a stand. As mentioned, siu mai, potstickers and either rice or noodles are my go to dishes and this place didn't disappoint. A co worker and I shared the mixed chow mien, marinated beef pancake and siu mai. All were really good. The siu mai I have had, has pretty much been consistent wherever I go and haven't had any complaints yet. The noodles were the thick and greasy kind I like, so for sure non with that. The beef pancake was interesting. The little bit of sweetness that was there was a surprise, but everything blended well together, but I feel there should have been some type of dip or sauce to go with it. Will for sure be back here to try other dishes, but I think I found a go to spot for my noodles. Going on a new car test drive with my FIL, I noticed this restaurant at a quiet plaza with the Hobee's. I asked the car salesman if he had tried it and he says they are quite good with reasonable prices and decent portion sizes. So I gave it a try with my family as a lunch break during the car buying experience. There were only a few other tables occupied. The food came out very soon after we ordered which was great. The stand out dishes were the pork/crab XLB, pan fried rice cakes and the meat pancake (best I have eaten). I went back again a few weeks later with a friend and it was still just as good! If you are wondering how the prices of food were like a few years ago, Dumpling Garden is a good example of this because where else can you find soup dumplings in the South Bay for only $6.99! My friend and I ordered DanDan noodles, pork, shrimp and chive dumplings, the soup dumplings aka xiao long bao, a Coke and also the pan fried pork dumplings. Everything was really good and my favorite was the pan fried pork dumplings. They were big, with lots of meat inside and perfectly crispy bottoms. Total with tax and tip came out to less than $52. Unfortunately I should've paid more attention to the reviews. First of all, this is a minor gripe but it's kind of bad form to be charging $1 for a paper plate, fork/spoon/chopsticks and ONE napkin. Like if you're going to charge for utensils, at least don't be stingy about giving ONE SINGLE NAPKIN? For over $40 worth of food, that's just a level of nickel and dime-ing that's hard to accept. But other than that, the pan fried bun (生煎包）was extremely underfried so it was completely soggy, you can see from the picture how nonexistent the sear was, especially compared to the restaurant's own picture of the dish... so light it almost didn't show up in the picture at all until I changed the lighting. An extra three minutes would've made all the difference in the end dish for your customers - that's just poor quality control. The flavor was fine and it was juicy inside, it seemed like the cook was just in a rush. The beef chow fun was super salty because the only flavoring in the whole dish was a ton of soy sauce. No aromatics or anything else. Ok... well at least they used onion, right? Actually maybe they ran out of onion because the cook actually included a piece of totally inedible peel that was so tough, I thought I had been chewing a piece of plastic until I pulled it out of my mouth and took a closer look at it. You can see for yourself in the picture. It's not even like the outer layer of onion that's transitioning from dried peel to onion, this was just 100% dried peel that you would never include. For three people we ordered Salt & Pepper Tofu, Veggie Pot Stickers, Garlic String Bean, Vegetarian Dumpling, Tofu Skin & Japanese Yam Braised Pork, and Vegetarian Pancake Roll w/ Cumin Flavor. My personal ranking: 1) vegetarian pancake roll, 2) tofu skin & braised pork, 3) salt & pepper tofu, 4) garlic string beans, 5) veggie pot stickers, 6) vegetarian dumplings. The pancake roll was absolutely amazing! To be honest, I never expected a pancake roll without any meat to have such perfect savory taste, probably even more delicious than some of the meat ones I've had before. The flavor was great and it contained several different vegetables. I really enjoyed the tofu skin & braised pork as well. It was one of my favorite dishes growing up. I'm glad to see that here they add tofu skin to the dish, which absorbs lots of broth. Two things I didn't like about the dish - it's overly sweetened, and the ratio of fat vs. lean meat was unbalanced (too much fat). Both the salt & pepper tofu and the garlic string beans were standard and tasty. Had takeout from this place and it was pretty average. I tried the green onion pancake as well as the sheng jian bao (Shanghai pan fried soup dumpling) and both were not that great. Granted, some of it was due to the food not being as hot due to the drive back after picking up our order, but there was not much flavor - the pancake was not crisp and didn't have much green onion, and the bao lacked juice and the bread to filling ratio was off. The garlic string beans also were not as cooked through as I would've liked. I would've given 3 stars, but they also forgot to pack one of the items for our order in the bag, and it's really difficult to reach them through the phone since I guess they're too busy and can't answer. Grubhub order review: I ordered the veggie potstickers and vegetarian chow mein. I immediately noticed that the chow mein was oily as the oil leaked into the bag it came in. Once I opened it, I could see the oil pooled inside the to go container. I was barely able to eat a few bites -- it made me feel really gross and the sheer amount of oil ruined the meal. However, the flavor of the noodles wasn't bad. The potstickers were not too good either. The filling was sub par and the wrapper was really thick and not cooked all the way through. One reason this got 2 stars instead of 1 star is because the flavor of the chow mein was okay, pot stickers weren't awful, and they had many vegetarian and vegan options. read more
