The dumpling idea sounded just excellent to me so I headed to this spot for their hot & sour soup with dumplings. Upon entering you're greeted by a hostess that speaks quite the broken English. You can place your order immediately and find a seat. The crowd is almost 100% Asian - always a good sign. I got my order within a few minutes. The soup, which is my favorite type, was not good. Its most notable flavour is salt, and a tad too much of it. Hot & sour soup is one of my go-to dishes in Chinese restaurants, so I know this one was below par. The DUMPLINGS inside that soup... Now that's a whole different story. When they said "master dumpling" they meant it. The soup comes with 10 (!) hand made pork dumplings inside ($10.50 AUD). Those are pure heaven and very well made. I saw other dishes come out of the kitchen, they all looked great. I noted that most patrons ordered something to eat and a steaming basket of dumplings to go along - that's probably the way to go here. Stick with their dumplings and you will leave happy. Come with an eating partner, value for your money is very good as well.

So look at what you want to choose, and order up. We ordered the Ma Hor (Caramelised Pork and Prawn with Peanuts and Pineapple) and Larb Kai (Chicken Larb with Ground Chicken, Chilli, Mint, Roasted Rice, Hot and Sour Dressing and Prawn Crackers) as starters. The main was Poo Nim Pad Pong Ka Ree (Stir-Fried Soft Shell Crab with Curry Powder, Chinese Celery and Garlic Chives) and a side of roti. Now tell me, doesn't reading that just make your mouth water thinking about the flavor combos? Don't lie. For me, there was delight in every bite, and flavor up the wazoo. The caramelized pork and prawn was tasty to sticky and tasty to start this food-venture. The chicken larb was zesty and had none of that fresh chicken taste, it was masked so well with seasoning. The soft shell crab had a rich creamy sauce to it with a certain twang I don't even know how to describe. Holy moly guys. I mean holy flipping moly. It's been a while since I had such a beautifully crafted meal. What's a good meal without good drinks? We had the coconut margarita and the Arthur's Tree. Can I just say omg yum? The fig tequila paired so well with the starters, it was one of those in sync things you just don't question in life. The location is perfect, the setting and decor was fitting with dark wood, and plants in tea pots. Service was remarkable. Not lying, every single person who greeted us, came by our table, brought us food, every single one of them checked in on us and made sure we were good. The meals came out promptly, it was one dish done okay next dish, next, the timing was mechanic. Plus side - you can eat here and not leave feeling stuffed in an unhealthy guilty way. Just satisfied as the happiest of campers. How does a restaurant leave someone in such awe? Go to The Village People Hawker Food Hall and find out for yourself.

Thank you village hall for not being stingy with portion sizes. By far I've had the best Asian food here in Melbourne. A fusion of flavours drawing from Burma, Thailand, China and Malaysia is the cuisine style of the village hall. We ordered the pork and chicken ball which is fried pork with rice, peanuts, dried red chilli, cucumber and roast chicken. Ir does not come as a ball but as a massive plate of rice with ample pieces of crispy pork and chicken. It is sweet, spicy, crispy, nutty and fresh tasting. The Burmese chicken red curry comes with onion, ginger, chilli jam, roti and lime. It is seriously the best red curry I've ever had. It's garnished with crispy noodles. The chicken is tender. The curry is thick. The barramundi curry is a looker. You get an entire dish with scales and all and it has been cut for you. It's crispy and sweet in a watery sweet and sour sauce. The pineapples were so tough and inedible. Pros Great service Awesome portion sizes Delicious infusion of flavours Cons Dim lighting All the food comes out at once and trying to fit it all means eating out of your lap or eating at a rapid pace. Only one main and one starter is required between two people. Wish the waiter has warned us.

While my partner insisted on ordering the Hainan Chicken, which arrived quickly, my order of "Hawker Laksa" took a significantly longer time to be served. In fact, my partner had already finished her meal by the time my bowl of laksa arrived. Although the restaurant has been in this location for quite some time, I was surprised that the waitresses were not taking orders. Instead, customers were required to approach the counter and place orders with a counter person there, who would then give a number stand to be set on the table. The Hainan chicken was okay, yet the fine chopped ginger was an additional $1 charge? On the other hand, my laksa was delicious and I could tell it was made with the authentic ingredients of that Hawker Street. While the restaurant was not very busy at the time, I found it frustrating that my partner and I were not served at the same time, and the wait for my food was quite long. Given this, it would have been nice for the staff to provide a clearer explanation for the delay. However, despite the wait, I must say that the laksa was well worth it. In fact, I would recommend trying the laksa despite the long wait.

Classic Vietnamese and Chinese food always hits the spot, so I recommend heading there with a few friends or family and ordering a few things. Peking duck pancakes and deep fried five-spice squid are on the menu and are so good. Service is best described as brisk. They don't mince words or muck around here.
