The original Dulwich Bakery in Dulwich made fabulous, flaky pies and pasties.
Unfortunately, with the growth of the business into what looks like a franchise operation supplied from a distant central bakery, the quality has slipped.
The Collinswood outlet gives every indication of being run very tightly with cost control being the priority.
Stock levels are low, with staple bread loaves, pies and pasties usually almost run out by lunchtime. Made to order sandwiches were offered, then only for reduced hours and now not at all. The coffee machine is turned off well before closing time for cleaning.
Prices are at the upper end of the scale across the board including coffee and the staff don't seem happy or friendly. I feel sorry for them.
Above all, the quality of the baked goods is low. The flaky pastry has gone, replaced by doughy cases and tops.
The cakes are fine, by the way, if expensive per portion. The bread's not bad either. It's the high prices and the hot baked goods that let the place down. read more
