Just had an incredible meal at Dulce Tropical and had to share. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done. The pollo a la plancha was juicy, well-seasoned, and cooked just right. I also ordered the arepas with queso and avocado, and they were amazing -- packed with fresh avocado and plenty of cheese, not skimpy at all. For dessert I had the tres leches, which was rich, moist, and absolutely delicious. I paired it with a mango drink with sugar, which was refreshing and the perfect sweet finish to the meal. I left completely stuffed and honestly it was worth every penny. Great flavors, generous portions, and really satisfying food. I stumbled on this on my walk near the museum in North Miami. Just a small local place, the plain dining room enhanced by colorful posters and flags, presumably of Venezuela, and a cheery yellow neon sign informing me "All You Need Is Empanadas." Almost true. I needed a coffee too. The staff doesn't speak much English and I don't speak much Spanish but between our smart phones we figured it out. The menu is in both languages but the details are only in Spanish. I had an empanada and a café cubano. There were many flavors of empanada. Mine was chicken and cheese. It was deep-fried to order and it took a while for it to be brought. It came out piping hot and marked with a branding iron. "catira". Google Translate says "blond woman.". That can't be right? The dough was golden-brown and slightly sweet, the filling melty-cheesey, moderately seasoned, with plenty of shredded chicken. The medium-large piece was enough for the small lunch I wanted. It came with a small container of a spicy mayonnaise-based dipping sauce but could have used more. My only other complaint is it was pretty oily on the outside from the fryer but that perception subsided as it gradually cooled. The coffee (Cubano, negro, sin azûcar) was excellent as I've come to expect in cubanos around here. There were many lunch and breakfast items on the menu, including complete dinners. Venezuelan and American. And several intriguing sweets that were hard to resist but I had too. My cooler was full. read more

If you're looking for some of the best empanadas you'll find...well this is the place. The Cantra- The shredded chicken and cheese was so, so good. The Pelua- was shredded beef and cheese OH MY! The chorizo empanada- two thumbs up But the Pabellon was the star of the show... with sweet plantains, shredded beef, cheese, etc., it was very, very, very amazing. The arepa wasn't my favorite maybe because of how great the empanadas are. I wish they made some type of spicy green sauce to dip the empanadas in. If I could give zero stars, I would. After giving Dulce Tropical at 841 NE 125th St more than enough chances (FOUR to be exact), I can officially say: never again. Every visit was worse than the last, like watching a slow-motion car crash soaked in rancid grease. The smell alone should've been the warning -- a sickening stench of old, overused frying oil that hits you before you even walk in. It's like they've been recycling the same oil since 2002. The floors were filthy, sticky, and looked like they hadn't been mopped in days, if ever. Health code violation waiting to happen. The staff? Clueless and rude. It's not even a language barrier at this point -- it's full-blown apathy. Orders are always wrong, and trying to explain anything is like talking to a brick wall. One time I asked for a simple side swap (didn't even touch the original one -- I had literally just walked away from the counter), and the woman behind the counter gave me the nastiest attitude, like I had personally insulted her ancestors. No apology, no effort to fix it. Just pure, unprofessional garbage. And let's talk about the prices. This place charges like it's fine dining -- but all you're getting is greasy, overcooked food that looks (and smells) like it came from a gas station. It's highway robbery for what they're serving. Save yourself the frustration, the stomachache, and the insult. Dulce Tropical is a disaster in every way -- customer service, cleanliness, food quality, and basic decency. North Miami has plenty of better options. Don't waste your time or your money here. read more

This place was really close to our airbnb and was basically the perfect breakfast spot. It's really affordable and the quality is great. We got some coffee, fresh OJ, and two empanadas. My pabellon empanada was excellent. Great combo of flavors, well fried dough shell. My only complaint is that the sauce that comes with it is in these tiny tubs that are hard to use. As I ate my shredded chicken arepa with garlic sauce, my first time trying Dulce Tropical Bakery & Cafe, two thoughts rocketed through my mind: 1. I had to apologize to myself for not trying this spot earlier. 2. I realized that the rush some people feel when they do drugs is what I feel when I'm eating something eye-rollingly delicious that I've never had before. I was like Uma in the bathroom in Pulp Fiction--"I said goddamn!"--as I made my way through this massive, juicy mound of shredded chicken. I got my sons some empanadas to try--shredded chicken and ham and cheese. They look different from Cuban style empanadas because they are different. My sons have not yet become adventurous eaters. They declined to try the large, sizzling hot, cornmeal based batter crusted emps. I enjoyed them very much, although admittedly they were fried and greasy, so I couldn't pretend that they were a healthy snack option as I do pretend with baked Cuban empanadas. One note, the sauce was packed with the empanadas--not sure if you have to specifically ask for some with the arepa, and not sure what other sauces are offered. Based on the garlic I would try everything they have. Service was good--cortadito was strong and sweetened just right.
