Altoque Colombian food - Arepa Altoque

Altoque is Spanish for "not cheap." My Colombian coworker brought us here on his recommendation and…read moresaid the arepas are best. We walk in, and the first thing I note is there's no English spoken here, which is honestly not unexpected in Dover. At least the menu is translated. In fairness, everyone else was ordering so I got rushed. While everyone else got arepas, I chose the Hawaiian patacon (plaintain) dish. Price for all dishes was around $15 + tax, which seems high for the size of the arepas but was about right for the patacon. The dish was delicious, the plaintains well fried to hold up the ample portions. As others around the table said, the fries here are nothing special and I agree, which is part of why I picked a dish that didn't include them. Everyone else was getting a drink so I was pressured into guanabana. I prefer tamarind normally, but fresh-mixed guanabana wasn't bad; I just wish I had a way to tell them not to put ice in mine. (At least we're talking 6 cubes and not 30.) Main problem: Very long wait for our food, at least a half hour from our order to when it appeared. Takeouts were getting prepared and sent out as we sat and waited, and our lunch break took over 90 minutes when all was said and done. On a work day. So you will want to call ahead here, not eat in. Not to mention that it's a fairly small interior - it can fit some tables, but our group of 6 took up at least half the capacity. In the end, to cut the wait short, my friendly coworker had to go up and pay for us instead of having the waitperson come by. She's clearly overworked, taking orders from front to back, bringing food from front to back, and managing the whole process. This isn't a bad place if you want to take out dinner, or a lunch that will have leftovers for dinner. But there is comparable food in Dover that's at least this good, portions at least this big, prices lower, waits shorter, and even with more room to sit. So relative to others in the town, I'm capping it at 3 stars.

I enjoy their soup very much because its very healthy and full of vitamins . That soup on the menu is called consomé de menudencias or chicken soup. It features a rich chicken broth with pieces or giblets and the traditional taste of Colombian home-style seasoning. So good and so healthy. Only negative is the prices are getting out of hand. For starters, the chicken is flavorful, fresh and always on point. The rice and beans as well, but french fries are always a miss - stale and floppy - but the chicharron makes up for it! The only downside here: if you don't speak Spanish, you're screwed with both placing the order and picking up primarily due to it being a family owned establishment in a heavily populated Latin/Hispanic community. I've tried calling in a handful of times and have been put on hold for a while or hung up on after a few tries. It's pretty tough to have a conversation with them primarily due to the loud background noise and distant tone picked up by their touch less headsets the employees wear. It can get a bit frustrating if you're not able to speak moderate Spanish, but the alternative is just order Uber Eats or DoorDash, honestly lol it's still so worth it though!

The birria tacos were excellent, juicy and flavorful. The only thing is that they were pretty salty, and I wish they came with some sort of side, like rice, beans, or veggies. The Paisa platter consisted of steak, pork rinds, rice, beans, egg, avocado, plantains, a piece of bread. I was very impressed by this spread, and we received way more food than expected. The steak was tender and was cooked perfectly. Everything was super flavorful, but again a bit salty. I was very thirsty but the end of the meal! The service was also excellent and the waiter did a great job of explaining each dish to my husband. The ambiance was also nice, and we really enjoyed the travel videos they were playing on the large TV screens. I do think they could jazz up the inside a bit to make it a little more cozy and less fast-food-ish, but that's just my personal opinion.

The food was the biggest issue and For the price point, I expected much better quality and consistency. The ingredients didn't taste fresh, and the textures were off in a way that made the meal hard to enjoy. Even the simplest items--things that should be hard to mess up--were underwhelming. The staff was polite, but that couldn't make up for the disappointing food. I hope the kitchen improves, because right now it's not a place I'd return to or recommend. Im still waiting for the manager to call me back...
