DUKE ENERGY REVIEW I am writing this review because I believe I have been victimized by Duke Energy. I am also writing this review because I fear what has happened to me has happened, and will happen, to other Duke Energy customers. My last bill from Duke Energy was for the usage period November 8 - December 5, 2025. The total for the bill was $90.95. What is unusual about this bill is that the total cost was $22.00 more than the previous month and the fact I was in another state from November 6 - December 4, 2025. There was no one in my house to use any electricity. I called customer service three times. I had to call three times because two of my call went to call centers outside the United States and I could not understand what the service representative was saying. I finally reached a call center in Florida. The service representative could not provide any reasonable explanation for the discrepancy in my bill. All she was able to tell me was that my electric meter was operating properly. In fairness, to date, I must say I have been very happy with the service Duke Energy has provided to me. However, several issues emerged from my experience dealing with this currently unresolved problem. First, Duke Energy serves 8.6 million electrical customers and 1.7 million natural gas customers in seven states. I found out that Duke has full control of all these electric and gas meters. It is very possible, even likely, that Duke has incorrectly inputted some meters and subsequently increased customers bills. It should be noted that no agency, Federal or local, audits the Duke Energy monopoly. It seems, the customers are subjected to, without recourse, whatever decisions Duke Energy makes at the meter and on our bills. No agency, anywhere, should be allowed to wield this kind of power over its customers. I encourage anyone who has faced a similar problem to write to our elected officials to get them involved. I'm going to write send this review to them and to the Federal Trade Commission. What Duke Energy does to their customers is simply not right. read more

I thought I was doing a good deed by clipping the lower base of vines that had overtaken my utility pole, but the wilted branches up top short- circuited my service a couple of hours later. Duke's lineman (Robert) responded quickly and restored my service within a couple of hours of reporting. Great job, Duke Energy! read more

Duke Energy has perfected the art of corporate greed. Cost hikes arrive with clockwork regularity, transparency is nonexistent, and customers are treated like a captive revenue stream rather than people trying to keep the lights on. There is no meaningful accountability, no sense of shared sacrifice, and no evidence that these constant increases reflect improved service. Profits rise, executives are rewarded, and everyday customers are expected to simply absorb the hit. This is not responsible stewardship of a public necessity. I rate Duke Energy three stars. It's OK. We've been Duke Energy customers in Chapel Hill since June 2020, so for about four years now. I also have a residence in Atlanta and have been a Georgia Power customer there since 2001, at two different Atlanta homes. My three-star rating for Duke Energy is based on comparisons of my experiences between Duke Energy and Georgia Power. It comes down to two main things: 1. I've experienced way more power outages with Duke Energy than with Georgia Power. It's not even close. There have been more outages in four years with Duke Energy than in 23 years with Georgia Power. I know there are many factors that can make some homes more susceptible to outages than others. The places I've lived in Atlanta are more urban and dense than where we live in Chapel Hill, but Chapel Hill isn't in the boonies either. In Chapel Hill, we live close to I-40, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and office parks. Also, the terrain and weather in Chapel Hill and Atlanta are similar. Therefore, it comes down to Duke Energy's grid simply being not as reliable as Georgia Power's. Duke Energy also has a lot of random power blips, which is annoying. 2. When there's a power outage, Duke Energy's mean time to repair is poor. I've experienced multiple outages where it took several hours per outage for power to be restored. On August 15-16, 2023, it took about 24 hours for power to be restored. I lost over a full workday because of it. Because I've experienced so many outages over the last four years, I've grown accustomed to the company's outage alerts, their online outage map, and I even follow Duke Energy employee Jeff Brooks on X (Twitter) for outage information: https://x.com/DE_JeffB Again, in 23 years with Georgia Power at two different homes, I can't recall experiencing any sort of extended outage. If there even is an outage, most of the time, it's just a blip. And I haven't gotten familiar with any of Georgia Power's outage alerts or tools -- because I haven't had to. As a retail customer, Duke Energy has had slightly lower electricity bills than Georgia Power. However, the difference is on the order of magnitude of about 1¢/kWh (not significant). Also, Duke Energy sent us a "free" box of 16 energy-efficient LED light bulbs (9W soft white, 60W equivalent) for being new subscribers back in 2020. That was nice. After four years, I've used seven of the 16 bulbs. We live near the Chapel Hill-Durham border, which is also near the Orange County-Durham County border. These two Triangle cities and counties, along with other Triangle cities and counties (e.g., Raleigh, Wake County, Chatham County) are in Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress overlapped territories. Duke Energy Carolinas is the old Duke Power that I grew up knowing in Guilford County. Duke Energy Progress is the old Progress Energy, which was the combination of the old Carolina Power & Light (headquartered in Raleigh) and Florida Power Corporation. The old Duke Power was and Duke Energy today is headquartered in Charlotte. According to our apartment's management, our complex is served by DEP. Seems Duke is now using contracted line workers and they line their trucks up on residential (rural) roads and just sit. Smoking, leaving trash, and blocking residential traffic. All of which I was tolerating in the name of maintenance when today out of nowhere after these trucks spend the morning driving up and down my (dirt with only 6 homes on it dead end) road, I am sitting in an outage that they did not notify us would happen and the app/website are calling it a "necessary equipment outage" that will last estimated the next 4 hours through suppertime. Common courtesy would suggest giving customers of a major utility like power a heads up if you are going to shut power down on a whole road for "equipment maintenance ". What if I had medical equipment running in the home and needed to prepare a back-up? Big fail, Duke. But, what else is new? read more

ZERO if I could!!! I have called Duke Energy just a handful of times in my 20 years of service with them! Recently, I made two phone calls that have been a disaster! One of them I filed a complaint with the Utility Commissioner! I am still on the phone with a CS rep who doesn't understand that I want my budget billing reviewed. We replaced all of electric appliances with gas and I dont want to continue paying the high monthly payments. I have been on the phone, right now for 16 minutes and the rep still has me on hold! Why can't Duke Energy pay individuals that are in the US that actually use their services? Why are we "trying" to speak with representatives that don't understand what we are saying! Why can't we have an option for our electric company? Why do we have to settle with horrible customer service? Their subcontractors are very unprofessional. The subcontractor called from 803-669-1528, didn't give me his name but wanted to come immediately to my house for damage light fixture. He said they don't work by appointments, they just come when they can. I was being polite but he was pushy and blunt. Called Duke energy to cancel my request but he still came to my house 30 minutes after I talked to him. She was polite listening to me but put me on hold ~ 25 minutes just to cancel my request. I never want to call them or request for anything else again. Just horrible. read more

My lights have been flickering for weeks. My house in so insanely hot. I have had multiple Duke Energy technicians come to my house and admit we are not getting enough voltage. They then leave, and nothing is done. I finally got through to a supervisor, who straight up told Duke is not obligated to give us power. Daniel, the supervisor, said, "If it is uncomfortable, you are welcome to leave." Never mind that I just bought my first home and can't afford to go anywhere. NC does not allow me to have any other energy provider. I am stuck between a crooked utility company that has a monopoly in my area, and a government that doesn't give a shit. Duke is even trying to make it illegal to live off grid and use solar. I work from home. I have been working in 85+ degree heat, with flickering lights for weeks. After all this, my bill was $500. They needed to cut trees away from wires on a neighbor's property but could not get a basket truck into his yard so they came through my yard. To get the truck in they had to cut a bunch of brush and small trees. When they were finished, they just left all of the trash in my yard -- I can no longer walk across my back yard due to my age and their trash. Duke Energy is an irresponsible company that needs much, much more government oversight. Now I must add, the trucks doing the work were marked "Asplendah" so they could be a contractor for Duke. The street lamp near our house has been restored to it's original fixture and lamp - now burns a nice amber color that matches the rest of the lamps on our street. We (neighbors included) cannot thank Mara enough for going above and beyond to retore our street lamp that was mistakenly replaced with a newer fixture that burned a different color than those on the rest of our street. Mara was very sympathetic to our request and followed-up to confirm we were satisfied. Duke Energy and their staff's dedicated commitment to customer service and care impressed us all and we are very grateful. If I could change energy providers I would. I recently moved and received a bill that was double my previous bill. Moving forward it dropped to the amount I was accustomed to. I made 3 attempts to have Duke Energy investigate this and no one will help me. Basically saying it's correct and that's it!! I began living in Duke Energy's footprint about four years and this review is based on that experience. As you will see this is a two-part review. Month-to-Month Experience- In a word, seamless! Their billing has been without mishap and I find them easy to understand. Their Android app, emails and texts have been useful and not intrusive. When that bitch Irma ran right over me, I lost power for several days which was totally expected. I was kept informed and I thought they did a great job in a terrible situation. Home Energy Check- This free program was recommended to me by my AC contractor. They come to your home and after an evaluation supply you with all kinds of energy saving tips and rebates. In addition, there is a gift box with all kinds of led bulbs, low flow shower heads, thermometers etc. Based on this program I had a Duke Energy approved contractor come and seal identified leaks in my AC ducts at no cost. Next, I had an approved contractor install EnergyWise boxes on my hot water heater and heat pump that give me a nice credit on my bill also at no cost. Next, I had an approved contractor upgrade my attic insulation complete with a nice rebate. The contractors were all awesome! Finally, a Duke Energy inspector came to my house to ensure that all the contractors did their work properly. At no cost of course. Duke energy will provide power to anyone, without any proof of residency. Due to Duke not requiring proof of residency, like a lease, they provided power to squatters in my home for months. These people had no lease or other paperwork showing that they were legally residing in the home. When the squatters were discovered, Duke refused to provide the name of the person whom the service was provided for. Even to the Sherriff. I wanted to share an extremely positive interaction I had this morning with Duke Energy. Our home lost partial power, and I called Duke's "800-PowerOn" number for assistance. They indicated no other homes in our neighborhood were affected. In spite of this being a very isolated issue, a Duke employee arrived at our home in around 30 minutes after my call. He was friendly, professional, and immediately started to diagnose the situation. He was able to fully resolve the issue in under a half hour. Additionally, he stayed on site until I was able to go inside and ensure every light, appliance, etc. in every room was working. This employee provided us phenomenal customer service and highly competent work... an A++ job! THANK YOU! read more

The staggering level of incompetence at this company astounds. Twice now in one year they have disconnected power to the wrong apartment. After the last incident we were assured that the problem had been corrected and would not happen again. It did in fact happen again, and this time while we were out of the house for a few days, causing us to lose the entire contents of the fridge and freezer. Oh, and when I called for help with the problem, I even asked if it was possible that they'd disconnected the wrong apartment again, and was repeatedly shouted over that this was not the case. They came unannounced right after hurricane Florence and in the process to open the gate in the back the damaged the hinge. Due to the rain from previous storms wood swells up so they pushed open causing the damage right after hurricane Florence. They changed the meter and even thou I was out of town for two weeks controlling my thermostat remotely at a higher setting my electric bill went up. They say it is a smart meter, yeah sure smart to make you more money, it is rigged but of course nobody gives a hoot, they all get their paycheck one way or another The new meter must be defective but when I called to complain they treated me like I was a lunatic and wanted to imply that it was all in my imagination. They could not understand why in 7 days with the new meter my KW consumption was 3 times higher than in 21 days with the old meter. Requested a supervisor and it was even worse because she was BSing me with stuff that had nothing to do with the facts of KW usage I have the bill in my hand and I can't understand how that could be if it is not a defective unit. She even called back to make sure she had the correct location, and the technician Chris even called me to come take a look outside to show me the repairs had been taken care of. the residents said the lights had been out over quite some time, well thanks to Ebony and Chris at Duke Energy we can see at night and feel safe! Duke has been my electricity provider since I moved to Charlotte in 2006 and they do a pretty good job of it. Sure, there are the occasional storms that cause me to run on battery for a little while but I live inside the city limits so it's rare that a power outage lasts very long. They're prompt with billing and they're prompt with taking payments. They seem to try hard to work with reducing energy usage by providing comparisons to neighbors but we're already quite efficient in that area. The Duke building in Uptown Charlotte is stunning. A massive tower of white stone and glass that stretches into the sky. The lights on the building are quite flexible so they can go with pink or blue or red or even a red/white/blue depending on the latest news or current event or political goings on that they want to support. FYI, it goes by the nickname "Voltron." Unfortunately, you need a sponsor to visit the building to get to the higher spots for sight seeing. Big bummer for that. DUKE ENERGY SUCKS! I wish negative stars were an option because Duke Energy earned 1000's of them Christmas Eve 2022. Not only were they doing rolling blackouts on Christmas Eve 2022 during the coldest air of the season and the coldest air in the last four years, but their power grids failed miserably across North and South Carolina because they could not handle the demand from single digit temperatures. We were without power for 11 hours on Christmas Eve with a 7 degree low that morning and mid 20 degree high that afternoon. Thank goodness we have propane gas logs and were able to keep the front half of our house warm. Also what kind of wonky power grid goes Duke have?? Our development is one big circle and the houses on the opposite side of the circle got their power back at least two hours before we did. Also when the power came on it surged and knocked out our heat pump. We were very lucky that our daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law had come up for Christmas and he is a HVAC foreman and was able to get our heat pump back up and running again. Can you imagine what it would have cost having to call out an HVAC technician late on Christmas Eve night!! Yet everyone I know that has Rutherford Electric in Lincoln County never lost power, not even for one second. It was the same when we had that major ice storm many years ago. All Duke Energy customers lost power for four or more days while we had to go stay with my mother-in-law in Lincolnton who was serviced by Rutherford Electric and she never lost power once during this major ice storm. So tell me how a major conglomerate like Duke Energy can't keep power on for their customers during the coldest air of the season, yet customers on Rutherford Electric, a small electric co-op, never lost power??? It's quite obvious that Duke energy is not investing any of it's billions of dollars in profit by into its infrastructure, because if the were, half a million people would across North and South Carolina would not have been without power on Christmas Eve 2022. This is the sorry ass service we receive from Duke Energy after constant rate increases and sticking its customers with the cost of their coal ash clean up. SMFH!!! If Rutherford Electric serviced eastern Lincoln County, I would switch to them from Duke Energy in a heartbeat! read more

I hope that Duke energy looks at these and that this young lady gets the credit for her professionalism , helpfulness , and patience . What in the hell? I live in Seminole Florida and EVERY SINGLE TIME it storms we lose power, can hear the transformer blowing. I'm not talking about crazy storms, a regular damn storm. It is ridiculous! I have lived in multiple parts of this area and have never had that experience in my other places. As I speak I sit in the dark, told it would be 3 hours for power. Also, we have tried to call duke several times since we moved into this house (we rent), and ask duke to trim a tree that sits right on the power line, it sits right at the corner of three properties. I was told they don't do that, they will fix it if a storm knocks it out. Second time told they wanted to charge me for it! WTF, it's your equipment, MAINTAIN it!! And so expensive.
