Ordered my son's 1st birthday cake from here and they did a great job matching the theme and designing the cake. We ordered a large red velvet cake with cream cheese icing for everyone and a small chocolate smash cake with whipped icing for my son. They threw in the small smash cake for free. Several people complimented the red velvet cake and said it was delicious. When we went in to pick it up we also picked up some donuts and danishes which were tasty. The inside is cute and they have some bar seating. They had some adorable cookies and beautiful cupcakes and cannolis on display. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Duke's bakery is good expensive but good take my son and his friends there sometimes for breakfast before school

This is a cute little corner bakery- we stopped in for donuts and we delighted to see some less common favorites, cheese danish, fruit danish, cinnamon rolls, as well as the usual cake and glazed donuts. They also had long Johns and the fun part there was they fill them on request, which is my husband's gripe, he loves fluff filled and feels like we can never find them. Score! The Duke Fingers are a little specialty, they are small long John dough "fingers" split and filled with icing, spouse said next time he'd be happy with about ten of those. The case was also filled with cute Halloween cookies, delicious looking cupcakes, cannoli and single layer cakes- and they have a small selection of ice creams available for scooping. Husband got coffee and said it was very good. The person who helped us was super friendly and explained what we were looking at. I love the small town bakery feel. The donuts were delicious. I was driving through the St.Louis area and was craving a gooey butter cake. This was the closest bakery to the highway so I gave it a try. They've been around since the 1950s so I figured they'd know what they're doing. I ordered one gooey butter cake mini. The cake was so extremely dry it crumbled into a million pieces and had no flavor. Top layer was barely anything and certainly didn't have any goo. Next time I'll try a different place to quell my craving. read more

From what I gather the main shop is in Alton, and this is one of three shops. It's a small shop with not a whole lot of options. A lot of cakes, so maybe that's what they're more geared towards. I didn't get that overwhelming feeling of indecisiveness, in fact I was struggling to select something that looked good. Their pastries, cookies, and cupcakes just looked, "meh". The cakes were appealing, but I didn't want a cake. I ended up purchasing a cupcake. I learned that if it looks like, "meh" it tastes like, "meh". Not impressed. Workers were young teenage girls and closed early, says online they closes at 8:00 pm and they locked the door as soon as we had arrived at 7:10 pm. We asked if they could reopen because online it said they closed at 8:00 and they said no. We are from out of town and were visiting and my daughter wanted her favorite cookies from there. This place is always clean, staff nice and friendly. There is far more than just cakes here. While I've never tried the cupcakes, I've tried just about everything else and it's all delicious! Donuts, cookies, tons of variety in pastries. It is a smaller shop and you can make custom orders that come from the main bakery from there. Due to its proximity to the high school, I would not visit right before or after school lets out in the afternoon, lots of parents and kids clog the parking lot. I needed a First Communion cake, and I was hesitant to use Duke Bakery because I hadn't heard very good reviews. I stopped in the Granite store and asked if they have a picture of any First Communion cakes, but they didn't have any pictures and they told me to get on their Facebook page. I did get on their Facebook page, but no First Communion cakes. I called the Alton store and talked to Kelly, and I told her what I wanted, and she gave me some ideas that I didn't like. I asked if I could send her a picture and decorate it like the picture, and she said yes. I worried about how the cake was going to turn out, but when I picked the cake up I was pleasantly surprised that it was what I actually wanted. The cake was moist, and very tasty. People were actually asking me where I got the cake, and they were surprised that it was from Duke's. read more

They should change their name from "Duke's" to "Pukes". I've only had two things from Duke's Bakery that were brought in bulk to two separate gatherings, both bought the day of the event...cream horns and long johns. The cream horns were some of the worst I've ever had...small, filled with (ugh) marshmallow (REAL cream horns are filled with stabilized cream) and the pastry was not only the proper texture but were also extremely stale. The long johns were filled with some horrible concoction of what tasted liked canned pudding, and the pastry was not at all tasty and also stale. The chocolate topping was brown and way too sweet...not a hint of chocolate. The quality of both these "confections" was of the lowest quality and wreak of it, even if they had been fresh they would have been beyond lousy. I wouldn't waste my time even considering buying anything at this dump. No self respecting business person would sell this kind of garbage. especially being days old stale, It seems obvious they prey for profit upon those who have absolutely no sense of quality and are sugar addicts, it might do for that kind of person. Certainly not for anyone who has the slightest inkling of what even half way decent bakery goods consist of. read more
