Also, They just hosted the Lunchbox Shorts for Edmonton Downtown Dining. We had a great hour of food related films and for 15 bucks that also included a delicious burrito from Rostizado. Nice enough theater and really close to Fionn McCool's so you can go there for a drink later.

It was Sunday night which is Senior's Day and it's great they have deals most days. It wasn't too busy, there were just two people in front of us to buy our tickets and concession had no line. It was nice to be able to select our seats too. The washrooms were clean and there were enough stalls so no line up. The movie poster for our theatre was incorrect, so some people were in the wrong theatre. It was the first evening movie and the theatre was clean and ample leg room. The cup holder was a bit sticky but not bad. Another minor issue was the AC was blowing down throughout the movie and I had my hoodie as I usually get cold in theatres but it was still minor annoyance. Good theatre and would see a movie again here if I was downtown.

I live in Arizona, but on a recent stay in Alberta to be with family, I visited the Jewel Theatre. And I found a gem! Jewel, as the name says, is a precious experience, not least because the building and the staff exemplify the notion of a quality and unique experience. This is an old style theater, with the low and slow slope down to the front row, the long horizontal profile and the spacious and quality seating everywhere. From the moment I entered there was a vibrancy and upbeat mood from the staff. They welcomed me in as they were serving another customer. A quick scan of my digital ticket and I ordered a fresh popcorn (that was actually made fresh) with an iced tea. The drink was served in a large and old style tall glass jar with a flask topper. Super cool. The large popcorn was, well, larger than I needed! "What do I do with the drink jar when I am done?" , I asked. "Just leave it on the table near you", they said. The movie ticket price was just $7 CAN, which is about 50% less than the home price of $11 US! The concession prices were lower than concessions in the US as well, and of course even more so with the US/CAN exchange rate. Walking into the theatre auditorium I began to see what it was, the old theatre experience with the now added dinner tables furnished in front of most of the main rows in the center column of seats. You could order full meal dinners with the movie. This isn't a new thing, lots of theatres in the big chains have been doing this. Trying to recover lower theatre revenues by bringing customers who will spend more on dinner and some drinks to go along with a movie experience. But what struck me was this little hometown business was picking up the challenge of keeping the local theatre relevant, and strong, instead of crying their way to closing the doors because of how "things just aren't the same anymore ". Things aren't the same. And Jewel Theatre is not being left behind. The prices, the staff , the building, the custom experience and the nostalgia of the old hometown theatre all lives on at the Jewel. A wonderful experience.

They are always trying to get the community involved in some sort of shananigans like "Greese" night that they recently had. People were encouraged to dress up in 50's style clothing as they enjoyed hotdogs, cotton candy and ice cream floats. At Christmas time they did free photos with Santa for the kids. Every Tuesday is coupon night in which you can purchase a deal on your ticket/popcorn and pop. They also recently upgraded their screen to 3D!!
