The people here are absolutely wonderful humans who took such great care of my companion. They all seemed so caring and knowledgeable in regards to proper care and handling. When I picked him up, he didn't feel grimy. He didn't smell bad. He didn't want to leave. Very well run. Reservation went easily. and they asked all the right questions. My dog received excellent care. I called daily for updates and they were glad to hear from me. All shots are required and vet records. The place was so clean. Smelled clean as well. The staff there is so nice and personable. Understood my lengthy good bye. I couldn't leave her personal blanket but I understand why and they gave her clean blankets every day. She even had turkey dinner with the fixings for Thanksgiving! No updated equipment for the pets since they opened and come to find out there are holes under all the fences and gates out back!! I've also come to find out they don't properly regulate indoor temperatures and that more than one dog has died here due to leaving them outside unsupervised. I will NEVER be back. Do not waste your money or time with this place. I took my dog there when out of town and received no communication or updates on my dog when away. When I picked him up, he had a big rash on his face and they waved it off and said to just put antibacterial on it and he would be fine. A day later, I saw silver on my dog's teeth and that his front teeth were literally grinded down, which means he was probably chewing on something metal, of which again, I was not notified during his stay or even at pickup. Dog Parents beware! We have used Dude Ranch Pet Resort for the last 6 months no issues. This time was not same I got a call my dog had collapsed and was unresponsive. I arrived 10 minutes later to find him laying half out of the crate and he did not seem to know who I was or respond normally. He could not get up or move, or drink and looked as if he had been hit by a car. He was covered in slobber from mid back to his lower chest on both sides. My dog is a normally healthy, strong,150 lb Rotty , who at this point it seemed clear everyone was petrified of ...despite their joy to see him when he is brought in and his waggin tail at the girls who work there. And his current state where he was helpless and could not move it seemed no one was willing to get close and help him. I asked what happened and was told, "we don't know , we found him this way 30 minutes ago". I was advised by the vet tech who was visiting from my Vets office he needed to be seen immediately. He could not walk and was barely breathing, my son and I got him to the car and put him in to rush to the vet. On the way to the vet the dog drank almost 3 qts of water nonstop. We got to the vet we had to use a sling to get him inside but he looked better than he had 15 minutes earlier. Upon examination the vet determined my dog had heat stroke and could have brain and organ damage the vet asked me to stay with the dog and initiated cooling technics to cool him off, had to limit water because he would drink and then throw it all up. He had to be given anti vomiting medicine. Finally after over an hour he started to look like he was mildly improving. They vet suggested 24 hour care and iv fluids at the emergency vet which would have cost $1500. After further discussion it was decided taking him there might not be a good idea as it would only stress him more. I have now been caring for him at home with electrolytes and home cooked food for four days he is still not recovered and is unsteady on his feet , his gait is off and he cannot climb stairs. He is still on the vomiting medicine He is not acting like himself and has been out of sorts since this incident, he is slowly recovering but I am told it could take months to recover and if he has brain injury maybe not at all fully. This is clearly negligence and possibly abuse in my eyes, I almost lost my best friend and family member, and this did not happen in an hour or even two or three, my dog was back there baking in the heat and no one bothered to check on him or cared and all their cameras are obviously not watched or monitored. It was hot that day and it is a metal building and he is a black dog,, but they new all that and have a 5 foot fan back there that was not set up or working. My family will never return here again, do not take your dog there or you could end up like me only maybe worse. I dropped off a healthy happy dog and got back a wet pile of mush who was almost not breathing less than 24 hours later, but if it have been a long trip and I wasn't on my way back, it is simple, he would have died on the floor. Never Again, these folks are not safe! 5/13 it has now been over a week and still no call from Dude Ranch to see if my dog is still alive, these folks really don't care! read more

Let me start by saying the three stars has nothing to do with the care of my pet, he seems just as happy and healthy as when I dropped him off. Now into the review: Drop off and check in for the Dude Ranch was my worst experience with drop off and check in that I've ever had. It took abotu 25 minutes to drop off and about 15 minutes to pick up and this was largely due to the fact that the lady working the front counter never got off the phone. She continued to take call after call while people were standing and waiting to check in/out. That being said, they did do a flea check before they took my dog which made me feel good about the cleanliness of the facility and they don't allow any outside blankets or toys (probably also to prevent fleas). The property is beautiful out in the country, it was really just the reception that bothered me. If I dont' feel greeted and welcomed, then it makes me worry about the attention my dog is receiving, especially when paying top dollar. read more

Dude Ranch Pet Resort - I feel so sorry for my puppy. - Pet Training Near Me - Glen Allen, Virginia

All pet owners in and around Richmond I wish to share my most recent experience with dog boarding at the Dude Ranch located off Route 33 in Hanover County. We have been boarding our dogs there for many years with no major issues however during their stay at Christmas our most recent experience was truly awful for our dogs. When I picked our dogs up I felt something was off (noted we have 4 bags of food left + a full bag of treats I provided for them) I questioned the leftover food as we supply the exact days they need while staying and I was given oh we are sorry for your inconvenience. (really and of course this info was known after I paid in full) What I learned later from an employee there was a food mix up or food misplaced so our dogs were given the house food and due to untrained new hires left alone to care for all these animals. Anyone who knows animals would know you cannot just change their food. Once we were home both of my dogs were vomiting and had diarrhea. One of my dogs was so bad I ended up taking him to the emergency vet where he was diagnosed with pancreatitis. One of the main causes of pancreatitis is a abrupt change in food or receiving foods that are abnormally rich or fatty. The cost of this vet bill was $438 + $21 additional for a med I had to pick up from CVS. I have called several times and tried to speak w/ the owners and have left several messages with another staff member. These owners apparently have no intention of calling me back as apparently this is typical for them not to respond to customer complaints or issues. So due to their negligence I had to pay this additional vet bill. These owners clearly do no care my dogs, their owners and only care about money. Also I paid extra for what they call "luxury" in which they are should be getting extra attention and walks. Well I came home with an entire bag of treats I provided in addition to above so clearly they were not given extra care/attention. How extremely disappointed we are to now learn the owners of Dude Ranch are so self-absorbed and uncaring and are running a business for the care of our beloved defenseless pets in which they have no motive except money. They can't even return a phone call and take responsibility for what occurred under there management. I asked you to share this post so others will be aware to not consider Dude Ranch for boarding and if you are a current customer reminder if something goes wrong even a 10 year customer you will get ignored by management. read more

I dropped off my German Shepherd on a Friday and toured the facility before I handed her over. I cannot RAVE enough about how SPOTLESS this place was even with an almost packed house. There was zero smell that's what I noticed immediately... not even a chemical air freshener scent... it was just CLEAN!. Every dog had water & blanket/bed and seemed happy and the walls between them were solid which I thought was great because they couldn't fight or spread germs between bars. I opted for the Luxury Suite for my dog and it was so POSH! She had a toddler bed with mattress, blankets, & pillow. a toy shelf FULL of toys and a TV!!!! Did I mention turndown service with a treat on her pillow, how adorable is that? I also liked the fact that she had a Dutch door instead of the wire grid so it had more of a homey feel instead of a kennel. I can't imagine ANYONE being unhappy with this facility or any of the staff members! They even sent me pictures when I called to check on her.... I would GLADLY take her back. When I picked her up she was happy, clean, and just as clean as when I dropped her off! I've attached the picture they were kind enough to send me! read more

Our dog always has the best time here. She is able to socialize with other people and dogs and is always very well taken care of. The prices are reasonable considering the amount of time and care that is put into making sure each dog is happy and healthy while the owners are away. The only complaint I have is that the owner, who sometimes works reception, can be difficult to work with. When I have asked questions or she needs paper work from us, she has had a tendency to be short, unkind, and sometimes unhelpful. Being sort of the face and voice of the company (as she often answers calls and works at the front desk), I find her behavior to be unprofessional at times. My dog was mauled and almost killed at this place - his leg might never be the same. If you love your dogs, you won't let them go near here. My dog had been going to the Dude Ranch off and on since June 2014. All seemed well, although we noticed that he would come home and be so exhausted by the experience that he'd be sleepy for a solid day afterwards. In October 2015, my dog was viciously attacked and had to be rushed to the vet for emergency care. My dog was so badly injured he needed a tube placed in his chest and 28 stitches along his chest and hind leg. We were initially told that he had been attacked by 2 dogs. This made sense with the injuries as it appeared that he had been pinned on his back and one animal was biting his chest while another biting his leg. The vet specifically said, "Make no mistake, they were trying to kill him." One of the owners seemed to think our half-dead dog's situation was funny and said, "He always gets into fights! The only difference is that this time he lost!" After we said we'd want them to pay his vet bill, the story changed and we were now told he was only attacked by 1 female dog and that the fight was my dog's fault. They avoided our calls until they eventually sent an "incident report" from their corporate office in which they claimed that my dog tried to "pick a fight" (a term they used twice) and had a history of "instigating fights". This was news to us as we had never been made aware of our dog having any sort of aggressive behavior. Because they are blaming the victim for this incident, they won't help with the $1,782 vet bill. Obviously, we'll never subject our dogs to this sort of treatment ever again. Lastly, I'll share the last sentence of their incident report: "[dog who attacked my dog] and [Same owner's other dog] have returned to regular attendance." read more

I went on a mission to find the best, most trustworthy, competent kennel in the Richmond area. I didn't care how far I had to travel to board my dogs, I just knew I only wanted the best for them. I wanted confidence that when I leave my beloved pets in someone else's care they would be extremely well taken care of. Dude Ranch was my answer. My two dogs absolutely love it here! Here's why it is my belief that Dude Ranch is the best of the best: 1) Amenities - 46 acres in the country for hikes and long walks, pools, outdoor yards, an immaculately clean facility, uniquely designed kennels to give your pup a sense of security and comfort, and so much more. The indoor kennels are set-up so that if you have multiple dogs, they can be together. My two big dogs share an oversized run and love it. There are also private suites available with raised beds, TVs, shelves of toys, blankets, and everything a doggie could dream of for a vacation away from home. The suites are set-up specifically for each canine guest depending on its preferences. Oh, and the best part, the "house" food is Canidae - the same holistic, all-natural, top-quality food I feed my dogs at home. 2) Staff - The staff is amazing. They take time to get to know you and your pet. They remember you each time you come back. They have genuine care and concern for the well-being and safety of your pet during its stay at the Dude Ranch. My puppy goes into full wiggle mode when he sees one of his favorite staffers. It makes me very happy to know that he enjoys his time at the Dude Ranch and looks forward to each return visit. 3) Safety - Safety and security is paramount here. When you drop off your dog, you don't leave anything with him - not a leash, not a collar, not a toy. They supply everything. All blankets, toys, leashes, collars, food, etc. are supplied by Dude Ranch. This prevents any outside parasites from unknowingly making their way into the kennel. Your dog is given its own ID collar with your name, his name, age, gender, and contact info. More importantly, they take so many precautions to make sure your pet will only receive the best care that they don't have to ask you to sign a liability waiver in case anything happens during your pet's stay at Dude Ranch (unlike some other kennels in the area). They know the exceptional level of care your pet will receive, they know that your pet will be safe and secure at all times, and therefore, they don't need to ask you to waive anything. THIS is what let's me sleep well at night. 4) Philosophy - Provides separate outdoor yards (rather than group yards) for outdoor playtime. While it's true that socializing your dog is important to its development, it can be very stressful on your pup when the group is constantly changing the way it does in a kennel. Just when they figure out the hierarchy in their new pack, there's a whole different collection of dogs and they've got to figure it out again. It's stressful enough when a dog doesn't have its pack (i.e. owners) and forcing them to constantly re-establish a new pack while you are away makes it even more stressful. At Dude Ranch, there is a stress-free, low-key mentality. Here, everyone (human and canine) are relaxed and happy. Bottom line: Dude Ranch is amazing! They are reasonably priced and provide top-notch quality and service. I couldn't ask for more. This is the ONLY kennel I would recommend in Richmond. They are just that good. read more

I love bringing my dog here. The owner and staff are always incredibly nice and you can call 24/7 to check on your animal and someone in the back can give you an update. The daycare is great for active dogs. I always know that my pup is in great hands when I leave her at Dude Ranch. read more

I wanted to review Dude Ranch to second the earlier review by Meredith W. I think that my dog was well cared for at Dude Ranch. She seemed happy and healthy when I picked her up. The employees all seem great and seem to really enjoy working with the dogs. I have a couple of issues, though. A big one is that I really don't like that they take your dog's collar off when you drop them off and put on a yellow paper one. The yellow paper one is printed out with the dog's name. I asked why they do this, and was told that they are "break away" collars so that the dog can't get snagged on something by the owner's collar. I have boarded my various dogs for 15 years and have NEVER had another kennel do this. If the dog were to get out and his paper collar breaks away, then your dog has no ID! I mentioned this to the front desk person, and she said, "I hope your dog doesn't get out!" It just made me worry about my dog. I am really uncomfortable to drop off my dog and then have them hand me her collar. My other issue is with the owners. They just do not have great people skills. At drop off, the wife was trying to help check-in people and the husband was just sitting in a chair, barking orders at her and the other front desk clerk. The phone rang, and instead of answering it, he barked at his wife to answer it. She told him she was in the middle of checking people in. He answered it and actually put the caller on hold until the wife or front desk clerk could take the call even though he wasn't doing anything except sitting there. I thought it was strange that a business owner wouldn't help his own customers. There were a couple of other check-in issues that made me dread pick-up. However, at pick-up, the owners were mercifully not there, and it went quickly and smoothly. Honestly, I'm not sure if we'll go back. I think the dogs are well cared-for, but the owners' strangeness and the collar issue is enough to make me look elsewhere. read more

The owners on the other hand I could do without, rude, yelling at each other in a different language in front of customers, interrupting, and throwing stuff to each other. We took our puppy to stay here for 12 days when we had to go out of the country unexpectedly. Before deciding on this place, I went and toured 6 others including the Holiday Barn which is supposedly nationally known. Dude Ranch was so much better than any facility I saw and felt extremely comfortable leaving our baby boy here. The staff here are amazing and you can tell extremely sincere. They really cater to your dog's needs. When I picked my puppy up 12 days later he seemed happy, healthy and clean! Their facilities are very nice and very well taken care of. Two walks and play time are included in the overnight price and they include great food. I recently tried another place because it was closer (Holiday Barn) and it was horrible! They charge for walks and play time and hit you with an extra day charge if you don't get your pets by noon! When I got them home they each drank 2 bowls of water. Not to mention they came home smelling like urine! This never happens at Dude Ranch. I learned my lesson! Dude Ranch is the best and least expensive the area by far! A lot of miscommunication. Every time I called I would get a different story on the price, my dogs having there blanket in their cage with them, a picture or video of my three puppies each day. When I got there to drop my puppies off Toshiko no you can't leave there blanket with them, no the villa is the same size but the price is more and Sarah quotes you wrong, no they can only send you a picture of your puppies on the day before you pick them up. I was very angry but I had no choice but to leave my puppies to catch my flight in 3 hours. This was my puppies first time away from me and this has been a very frustrating experience. Toshiko is not a people person and changes her story several times. Sarah was very kind, friendly, and seemed great with my puppies. Also I sent food and treats for my puppies each day. I separated how much food they would eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus treats. I pick them up and find a full bag and a half bag of dog food not eaten, dog treats not given out. My dogs love their dog treats so that made me mad. This is the first and last time I would take my three puppies to this pet resort. Overall experience was horrible. read more

I recently called upon the Dude Ranch to take care of both of my dogs, one an Irish Setter and the other a Manchester Terrier. Both dogs get along wonderfully, but apparently on this trip they must have gotten tired of each other. In addition, the Irish Setter has had some recent bladder issues. The staff at the Dude Ranch made sure both digs were taken care of -separated them but kept them in close proximity to each other and took care of the Irish Setter problem without batting an eye. They kept him clean and dry, taking care that he did not have any issues. We had a fleeting lapse of thought and toured a closer kennel to the house -it was a dirty warehouse, and the operators were not sure if they could take care of the Irish Setter. I am so glad we did look at the other kennel -it just confirmed the quality of care we receive at the Dude Ranch. read more

I have taken my golden retriever to the Dude Ranch several times for half day daycare. I've had a very positive experience there. My dog is very happy to go in an appears to have been very well taken care of there. The staff are very pleasant . It does seem to take a bit of time to check in and out though but, otherwise I have been very happy and will continue to take my sweet puppy back. I have been on several tours of other facilities ,but I haven't found one that I liked as much as the Dude Ranch. read more

ZERO STARS. We will NOT be returning. We have taken our dog here a few times. We will NOT BE GOING BACK. I asked that they trim our dog's beard, just enough so that the hair doesn't get into his mouth. The owner was sitting in a chair, communicating what I wanted to his wife, who didn't understand. He told her again. She supposedly wrote it down. Our dog had just been groomed two weeks earlier at a VERY hefty price. Our dog looked the best that he had ever looked. Needless to say, when my husband returned to get our dog, a beautiful Irish doodle, he insisted that it was "NOT MY DOG". The dog was totally unrecognizable. He had been shaved from head to toe, except for his ears and the tip of his tail. I can't understand why anyone would do this to such a beautiful dog. I would give them ZERO STARS if I could. We will certainly never go back to the Rude Ranch Pet Resort again. read more

BEWARE of the Dude Ranch! My dog can home with an EYE INJURY after being boarded for 1 week with no contact with other dogs and the staff didn't notice or contact me! When I picked him up, I was immediately noticed some thing serious was wrong with his eye and asked the staff what happened - I was told the staff wiped his eye for discharge 3 days earlier and then they told me I should take him to the vet immediately!! I rushed him to the vet - he had a HOLE in the center of his eye . He's been in a cone and on 4 medicines for 3 weeks and it hasn't healed. We called for weeks to complain and see if we could at least be reimbursed for the $200 boarding charge, but the manager didn't return our calls. When we finally talked to her, she argued with us and said it was ALLERGIES! She said some things that were utterly stupid and rude...this person should not be running a business. I DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE AND THE MANAGEMENT IS AWFUL. Please do not take your pets here. read more

We have used this facility a few times now. There is only one person that truly cares for animals here, all the others are just in it for the money. The management team does not initiate any rapport with their clientele. Check-in/out is a nightmare; slowest process in the world. They check for fleas which leads me to believe they have had issues with fleas in the past. Also, my dogs always have a yellow tint around their necks after they place their collars on them. Sadly, there isn't a decent kennel in town. read more

I was just there last weekend and I didn't leave very happy after checking in. This place have ZERO customer service, they don't bother to give you a reason or explain you why they can't take the dog's blanket (I know my beagle didn't appreciate the fact that I was leaving him behind, and not having his blanket with him with our scent must have been very difficult for him) or why you have to bag the food in different bags, when I'm providing a scoop with the perfect size for when he needs to be fed, and the lady at the front desk said NEXT TIME BRING THE FOOD LIKE I TOLD YOU OVER THE PHONE. I asked them to give him a bath on Sunday before pick up and they replied NO, WE CAN'T. We'll do it on Saturday. Their website said that if your dogs stay with them for boarding they give you a special price for grooming, I don't think $35 dollars is a special price, that's what I get charged anywhere else. And on top of, it looks like they only have him a bath, they didn't brush him, he was shedding a lot when I pick him up. read more

I have boarded my dog there two times and he always comes back happy and healthy. The staff are super friendly. I like that you can call 24/7 to check up on them. My only complaint is that they told me over the phone and at drop off that I could pick up as late as 7 on Sunday. As I am headed home I get a call at 4:50 asking if I will be getting my dog since they close at 5. I am now missing my baby and having to pay for another day. read more

I have a 5 month old puppy and was quite apprehensive boarding him for a week. Like any good Mom, I visited a few boarding facilities and I had the best feeling about the Dude Ranch. As I toured the facility, I could not believe how shiny and clean the kennel area was. I also felt very comfortable with the staff as I saw them interact with the dogs and were very forthcoming with information. Once I decided to board my puppy, I decided to take him there for 1/2 day daycare to get him use to the enviroment. It turns out my puppy is extremely shy and not social with other dogs! No worries..the staff worked with him 1:1 to make him comfortable and less anxious. When it came time to board him, he had been to the ranch a few times and the staff knew him by name and were aware of his habits (knocking over his water bowl when anxious). Before leaving him, the front desk staff offered options to try with him to ensure he had a good visit. I left him on Friday, 8/9/13 checked in on him twice during vacation. The staffers were honest with telling me he wasn't eating very well and that he did not like daycare or the cuddle service. After speaking with me the first time,they changed his feeding schedule and instead of the cuddle service and daycare, they took him on an extra walk each day which they said he enjoyed the best. I like the fact that the staffers did not give up and kept trying different methods until they found one that he responded to. I picked him up today, 8/15/13, and he was just as happy and healthy as when I dropped him off! He also got groomed while he was there and he looks so handsome! If you want a clean facility with caring and friendly staff members, take your beloved pet to the Dude Ranch! I am visiting in town and had to bring my dog with me and was refereed to this place. I called last week and they said I could make an appointment for 9am to have my dog reviewed... 9am because no one in the real world has a real job and I had to take off to meet them at 9am.. yesterday I called an confirmed that I would bring my dog at 9am today.. they said they needed to check my dogs shots with my vet.. I said go for it.. then they called me at 8:15 saying my dogs bordetella vaccine was over due.. she said vets give them once a week and they require them every 6 months.. it would have been nice to know that on the two previous phone calls.. and they said that only the shot would be effective for today. Went looking for vets.. third was a charm and will likely be my new vet... she said .. nasal was more effective and that the shot would need a booster to be effective.. I took the nasal.. then called these people back.. then they informed me that the nasal could be sneezed out and that's why they want the shots but that I could bring my dog in 48 hours.. I said.. what if he sneezed it out? no comment.. So it cost me 3 hours of lost time at my job.. driving all around town looking for a vet.. couldn't board my dog so I had to drive 30 miles to my parents house to get someone to watch him.. We came here looking for training, which we reluctantly signed up for. But we also were looking for day care. And we couldn't be happier with both! Our puppy is such a happy dog, he loves the ride up to the building (especially looking at the horses), he sees the trainers and the day care people and gets so excited!!! We're going to be here for life!!! read more

kinda disappointed, I was really hoping that this would be a place I could count on since I am new to the area. Unfortunately, my dog not only came home with insane amounts of fleas, but also tape worms! I had a horrible experience with this place! The owners were in the front lobby while I was checking my dogs in and I can honestly say, I have never been treated so rudely by anyone, anywhere. I was simply appalled by their complete lack of customer service. The young woman checking me in was also so appalled at how rudely I was being treated, she left the room...and subsequently apologized to me for the owners' rudeness when I returned a few days later to pick my dogs up. It is really a shame - because I think my dogs were treated well....and both the young woman who took my dogs and the woman who checked me in were very nice and professional. However, I will NEVER go back to that place because of how rudely I was treated by the owners. They are obviously all about making money and nothing else. read more

Avoid for grooming at all costs. We've been getting our dogs groomed here for 2 years, despite one of our dogs coming home with a scratched cornea after getting groomed the first time. The last two times grooming has taken over SEVEN hours just for two completely butchered haircuts. Heart breaking to have to send your excited dogs back in to get a haircut fixed multiple times (per manager's request who also saw it was butchered). The manager's answers to our frustrations? Prices are being increased by the way. A rip off and terrible experience for any dog. read more

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Dude Ranch... the only place I leave Boy-Boy when I go out of town !

I have boarded my dogs before at another kennel so I know the difference between a great kennel and kennel that has no business taking care of pets! This place was awful, my dogs smelled terrible, they were very stressed, they did not get the attention we were promised. When I picked them up it took three calls to the kennel area to bring them to the front and when I asked the girl how long ago they had been out she said 6 hours ago! The owner is rude and the care takers are idiots. I don't care about price as long as my dogs get the best care. But to be charged outrageous prices and have below standard care is beyond forgiveable. Please do not leave your pets with these people. It's obvious it is about the $$$ not about the pets that are in their care. read more
