Wonderful community bowling. This evening had disco black light fun. Nice way to "Bowl off some steam" on a Friday night!

Panoramic of the lanes.

Loads of throwback fun! We took our kids on a Sunday afternoon and there were two other lanes in use. By the middle of our game we had the place to ourselves. I think of bowling allies like roller skating rinks today. Lack of updates is fine with me. The classic hardwood and still-amazing 1950's pin management technology is all here. A disco ball and black lights are also there for cool nighttime bowling. They have beer and food, though we didn't have any and by chance my favorite album was playing on the speakers while we bowled. What's not here? An arcade to distract from the bowling, thankfully. My savvy, 21st century sons loved every minute and laughed when some folks scoffed and left after seeing that it was duck pin, not full sized, bowling. Grab a coupon here on Yelp and give this place a try if you're a local. Let's keep them in business for a long time to come.

Never been duck pin bowling before, it was pretty fun once you understand the scoring. Looks like your standard bowling alley, in the low tech side, but it didn't detract from the experience. Guy running the place was super nice, let us pick our own lane, and was really fast at fixing any technical issues with the lanes. I'll be going back for sure.

Great for 3-6 year olds. Easy and fun!!

This is a local business that really is a fun and easy time for the kids and family. No hassles. Easy in and out. It's nothing fancy but it doesn't need to be.

Mediocre at best, kind of run down and a bit sketchy but not bad. Drinks are decent price but bathroom was not the cleanest at all.

I thought it was pretty inexpensive for the amount of fun I had, $9 for shoes and the first game, $14 for two games.

A classic Candlepin Bowling alley and family owned Mom & Pop shop in every sense. The decor…read morereflects a time when the game was at its peak and was the 'in' thing to do on a Friday night instead of sitting at home watching TV or playing video games. The lanes themselves are well maintained in terms of finish and mechanics of the pinsetting equipment considering the business has been in operation for OVER 50 YEARS. They do lack automatic scoring, however in Candlepin bowling, automatic score systems are not always accurate due to the the use of felled pins in subsequent shots. Frankly, if you have a problem with writing on a piece of paper to keep score and think that is a reason to complain, you're a moron. Additionally they have a nice array of Brunswick tournament class billiard tables. There is also a bar and lounge with a decent selection for such a small operation and everything is modestly priced. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because their hours fluctuate unpredictably. Generally one can find them open on a weekend afternoon, but if you're looking for something to do after 10PM, it's rare that they're open that late. I highly recommend a quick call prior to arriving to confirm availability. Do yourself a favor and experience the classic New England tradition known as Candlepin Bowling at Canal Lanes.

This place has character, and character does require some patience. When balls returned, sometimes the hopped off into the neighboring lane and came hurdling at you, which was frightening and amusing. There were issues with the pin reset. But on the flipside, this was an incredibly neighborly, welcoming place, even for an outsider like me. Note: summertime hours are spotty, so be sure to call before coming.

I am not sure how often they do league but definitely call prior arrival and ask if they have league going as there is no available lanes during league. We played the mini golf which is very small and short, kinda bowling themed kinda full of some fake plants and a Christmas's tree??. Mini golf is cheap at about $9-$10 a person. Wasn't really sure what the par was on the course so it's pretty much a guess. Got a few drinks, bartender served people standing at counter before us. Seems like they need to update their software very slow service as the bar waiting for my credit card to process along with the 4-5 other league people who came in after that we had to wait for. I acknowledged and proceeded to pay for our lane. He came by again within 5 min to let our whole party know, again, that no outside food or beverage was allowed. (We heard the message loud and clear the first time.) The happy meal was still sealed and never touched. I got up instantly to throw it away in front of my son to adhere to thier policy. He cried, but thankfully we were spared a third reminder. I felt like this was very unprofessional and extremely rude. We spent over $200 while we were there. I will not be going back.

In short if you have options exercise them, if you dont, order take out and STAY HOME. Again this is my opinion, should you experience something other, more positive, consider yourself lucky and buy a Mega Millions ticket.
