I particularly love their extensive rice paper selections. My favorite is the "no water" rice paper, which doesn't require dipping in water to roll up like traditional ones. Unfortunately, this type of rice paper is available at every asian market so I'm happy Tan Binh has them. They also have a nice section dedicated to ready-to-eat and hot foods. You can grab and go with options like fried fish, tofu, and cooked meats. Customer service is usually pretty friendly. Just like anywhere else, you should check the expiration date of every product before buying. My cousin forgot to do so and bought two boxes of solar dried bananas that were expired. And during the warmer seasons, they set up a nice plant and herb section for sale right outside the entrance.

I couldn't shop here because about 90% of packaging were in Vietnamese. It would take me days to translate with Google Translator app on things I might want. Couple of aisles were stacked with boxes. I considered myself skinny. But I couldn't even squeeze through them without knocking things off the shelves. That's a safety hazard. One corner of store has stacks of rice from Thailand, namely Jasmine rice. Lots of them in 25 lb sacks piled in the middle and smaller packages on the shelves. They seem to be fresher than Viet Hoa Supermarket. Another bad thing about doing here is the prices are marked. It could create a communication problem with cashier. I would come back if I can find someone speak same language to help me to translate.

When my family moved to Houston in the early 90's, I remember frequenting the old Viet Hoa on the weekends. With time, things evolved and Viet Hoa became one of the Asian grocery store powerhouses in its current location on Beechnut and Beltway 8. With Chinatown's busy weekend traffic, it's convenient to have a few smaller Asian stores like Tien Hung as alternatives for ingredients or supplies. Obviously don't let the run-down store or presence of peddlers turn you away, but always be cautious of your surroundings. Do as I do, quickly get in, grab what you need, and go! The storefront is not the cleanest nor most well-maintained, but they do offer a limited selection of seafood, meats, and produce. Occasionally, my mom comes here for Asian herbs and pho bones and meats to save time. Should you need ground pork from certain cuts or sliced meat, you can request those services from the butcher. Sometimes, the shrimp in the seafood section is even cheaper than Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. My favorite items to get are the homemade pork and shrimp wontons, which are made in-house daily. The wontons are located in the refrigerated section in the back of the store. For $6.50, you get a reusable 14 oz package of 32 wontons. Since I buy them in bulk and have to transport them 5-6 hours in the car, I freeze them as soon as I get home. Before eating the wontons, I let them defrost in the refrigerator for use the next day. These wontons are the perfect addition to make your own wonton soup with egg noodles, veggies, chicken broth, and whatever other ingredients you prefer. Everyone that has tasted these wontons loves them, especially during those cold winter nights. Another favorite of mine is the 25lb bag of Con Nai Bao Bo(deer) jasmine rice. I have purchased about 3 bags already because of how fragrant it is when cooking. Compared to other brands, this jasmine rice is more soft and moist, with a subtle sweetness. It's more expensive than other brands at $27.50, but definitely give this brand of jasmine rice a try if you're wanting a better flavor/texture profile. At the front checkout counter, there are a small selection of homemade Vietnamese goodies like: sesame balls, banh bong lan (sponge cake), and shredded pork & pork skin (bi). I haven't tried any of the baked sweets here since Parisian Bakery is right next door, but I have tried the tasty shredded pork & pork skin (bi), which is sold by the pound. You can use the "bi" as a spring roll ingredient, on toasted French bread, or to be eaten with rice or broken rice dishes. Don't expect friendly service and the cashier lady often tries to ask you to buy more homemade goodies. Like I said earlier, grab only what you need and be on your way. Consider Tien Hung as your local Asian convenience store. I frequently stop by when my mom needs a few ingredients for dinner to avoid the hassles of parking and traffic at Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. And you can always grab fresh French bread, pate chaud and sweet goodies next door at Parisian Bakery too. Less hassles and getting sweet treats afterwards = winning!
