Food photography At cake cafe
Ellen S.

One of my favourite Yelp events so far! Take the two things Yelpers love most: food and photography, combine them, et voilà, you get a very interactive workshop on foodphotography. Photographer Jette Virdi set up 10 stations with different food or drink, and with instructions, we had to try take our best shots. Harder than you think. I mean, how can you make a gloopy, grey soup look somewhat attractive to the eye? After the workshop we nibbled on some yummie canapé's and divine cupcakes. The winner of the evening was announced and to my surprise Jette picked my cupcake photo. Woohoo! Maybe I should change career after all? The prize was great: the cake café cookbook and a funky looking teatowel. Delighted!

Went along to the Dublin Food Porn Photography workshop last night @ The Cake Café! A lovely event to kick off this festival of food porn pics. The setting of the kitschy cute Cake Café was perfect for taking a few snaps with lovely block coloured tables and other cool decor. We were greeted with a glass of delicious lemonade and then put into groups where wed move around to different food stations. There were individual tips at each station for the best way to photograph that particular food or drink. We moved around items on the table, experimenting with composition, angles and props. It was lovely to see everyone's photos uploaded after and everyone's different visual interpretations of the same objects/scenes! After this we were treated to the most gorgeous canapés and sweet treats. The Cake Café is of course know for its fabulous baked treats and they did not disappoint! A lovely yelp event, thanks guys!

Dublin and it's mighty fine food, what are you doing to me? You smell good, you taste good and you look good. Dirty good. Yummy good. We really are spoiled for choice in Dublin when it comes to food. It'd be rude to not document it. And it's not surprising the Dublin Food Porn event is in its second year on Yelp.

Delighted I was to get to go to one of the coveted food porn events and the one at the Dublin Cookie Co didn't disappoint. Unfortunately I was a bit late due to having something really important to carry out so missed some of the introductions but the staff and Emily quickly made me and my teenager feel welcome! Rather weirdly we all got to decorate male genitals (cookies, not the real thing) with icing and various sugar toppings and then got to take them home to nibble on! The only issue for me would be the location as I would have little or no reason to be around the Thomas Street area and I think maybe the concept of the Cookie Co might be too yuppy and expensive for the locals? I may be wrong but I wish them well as they have a lovely product and staff.

There is this German saying 'Das Auge isst mit' meaning a meal is also enjoyed with your eyes (who says Germans only use long words?!?) The Food Porn Fest and its many participants are clear evidence that the Germans weren't wrong about that. I was lucky enough to take part in the food photography workshop in the very charming Cake Cafe last night and I had a ball. It was very informative, interactive and fun and there was a little surprise prize for the best picture of the night. I learnt that I can no longer blame my bad pictures on my crappy phone (and its camera), no it's definitely me. Obviously that's not gonna stop me from taking lots and lots of pictures in the future.

I popped along to last weeks Food Porn finale which took place in the Apothecary Bar, a unique and snug little spot hidden away upstairs in Sam's Bar on Dawson Street. The Apothecary is a small little plush, Victorian bar decorated in eclectic medicinal and botanical accents that does great cocktails and in conjunction with Dublin Food Porn night kept the Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin cocktails flowing all night... I didn't get a chance to taste the munchies on offer though! With warm hosts, excellent bar staff and funny little Mills and Boons readings I thoroughly enjoyed this event and discovered a new hidden little gem that I hadn't known about before!

Gutted I can't attend any of the events but happy to share some of my own Food Porn photos from around Dublin.

The French Pardox - chillin!

Who knew there was so much to food photography? Not this novice!! Jette did a great job with challenging us at each photography station. From lighting, to ugly backdrops, to not presentable subjects. I learned something new at every click of the pic! She also walked around and gave us suggestions and feedback on our pictures and how to get the best shots! The shop itself was an incredible backdrop for food pics. I wish I could take all the food porn shots here, but that's just another challenge :) The food was delightful too - Cake Cafe served up some DELISH lemon bars, cupcakes, bruschetta, and cucumber bites!

I always go to a salon wanting some style, but with curly hair it's so hard to find. I always leave with the same style, not much input and still a little confused, which in turn has left me a little lazy with my hair. With Tamar, I've found a new love for my hair, a new product to try, a completely different approach, and advice on how to look after it and style it properly, I love it! (Thank you so much!) The Salon is so comfortable, with reclining massage chairs while you get your hair washed, followed by a head massage, which was delightful! My hair feels super soft and nourished with the treatment, and with the way Tamar styled it, I keep having to glance at myself in the mirror just to see how good it looks and feels..it'd be rude not to! Thank you so much for organising this event, I look forward to going back and being pampered and styled again!

The footrest started to automatically rise up and it turned out the chairs were massage chairs! I was not expecting that at all but it was very relaxing. The products used were fab and my hair looked so healthy and smooth after. I got a great 40s style blow dry which I will have to come back to recreate for a work do we have coming up. Can't wait to try out the products in the goodie bag and return for a hair cut!

A plus as far as I'm concerned. I used to do a lot of Reformer Pilates but it's been a while and so I was looking forward to trying out this studio as it's closer to where I live now than my previous studio. From the moment I walked in I felt very welcome as Steph greeted each of us as we entered. Steph walked us through the movements very clearly and in a very relaxed manner, while walking around and adjusting us if and when necessarily. I was very impressed with her knowledge and explanations. She gave advice where needed and offered suggestions if some of the movements aggravated injuries. She set a really relaxed atmosphere from her supportive and encouraging manner, and I think everyone felt confident in the knowledge that she clearly knows what she is doing. The gym space itself is also worth noting, as it must be one of the nicest I've ever been in; so spacious with lots of natural light and what looked like brand new, top-of-the-range equipment. I will definitely be recommending Live & Breathe to my many pilates-obsessed friends in the future!..

Jasmin was brilliant at explaining the whole history behind bellydancing first, and then gradually introducing the different moves to us, although it took us Irish folk a fair bit more time to stray away from our old, rigid-arms, nothing-moves-above-the-waist roots!.. I think it's safe to say that her continuous encouragement made everyone feel increasingly at ease as the class went on, and even I started to feel my inner belly dancing guru come out when she introduced funky music to the scenario!.. All-in-all it was a really enjoyable class, and a nice gentle muscle-workout (not too strenuous, but still satisfying to know you worked muscles that you never even realised you had before!). I'd definitely recommend it as a fun hen-party activity to try. A big thanks to Jasmin Victoria for doing it!

And then she had me promise to take her as my +1 when possible. That was the best start of the day one can have on a Tuesday !!!!! 1 star for the HOSTESS : I arrived at 4 Dame Lane with my buddy and I saw her. Emily, the one, the only ! Wearing a gold disco ball like dress and flowers in her hair... A vision ! And on top of that she is the sweetest... What can you do, some people have it, some don't... and she does :) 1 star for the SHOWMAN : He was reading the numbers like no one, warming up the room like a fire in a boys scout camp and generously distributing gifts - even for those who were lost in the game ;) - like Santa on Xmas day ! 1 star for the FOOD : To be brutally honest with you, I am not a big fan of chicken wings because they are usually very spicy. There I said it, now throw me the first fluffy pillow I don't care ! What happened is I was super hungry, like starving, and I had a chicken wing... And I loved it ! It was not too spicy and it was actually really tasty with the white sauce dip. So I approve and will probably go back because - why not ? :D 1 star for the OVERALL EXPERIENCE : From start to finish the evening was just amazing ! Oh and I had a line at some point in the game and shouted LIIINE !! I think everybody heard me. I don't mind losing but I really wanted some bling here :) In France usually only seniors play Bingo on a Sunday afternoon... But if French people started to go to 4 Dame Lane, eat awesome chicken wings, drink the best mojitos, and play BLINGO with a great crowd - I bet more people would join the game ! Probably my favourite Yelp event to date!…read more I convinced a bunch of girls from work to sign up and get bingo-ing and it was a fantastic night. I have never been to 4 Dame Lane before, so I was really keen to give it a whirl. A great location with inviting flame sconces outside, how could one not like it. Inside is laid out really well, with fantastic floor spaces and the bar is easily accessible from all areas. Bingo is awesome. Wings are awesome. Put them together and you have a recipe for success, no matter the age group. Add in some bling and you've got me hook line and sinker. The night was thrilling, three numbers, two numbers.. ONE NUMBER TO GO! Unfortunately for me, I never got to shout blingo, but I very much enjoyed the experience. If I was to give some criticism it would be the following: 1. We found it very difficult to hear the numbers being called out. We sat right down the back as there were no other seats. I know there was a light up sign with the numbers, but I would highly recommend this be put up higher for all to see. 2. No non-alcoholic beers?! I don't really drink, so i would usually grab a non-alcoholic beer. I figured there wouldn't be an issue seeing as I had two tickets and would happily trade both for one. However as they weren't part of the deal, I opted for a soft drink which wasn't exactly ideal. 3. The wings could be a wee bit better. Maybe I'm spoiled from spending so much time at Blue Bar, but the wings were just okay to me. From speaking with my table, we all agreed. These minor issues aside, yes I would probably attend another blingo night at 4 dame lane, price depending.
