I've had the boneless fried chicken (chicken bites) here for years. So delicious. Unfortunately, today we got three orders of the fried chicken plates and they were all very tough. Hard to bite into and tough to chew. Weirdly, the breading fell off the chicken when bitten into, leaving naked meat nuggets. I've read about a problem with larger, cheaper chickens that acquire something called "woody breast". Hormones and poor raising standards (to make chickens grow large quickly) might cause the breast meat to be tough and hard to chew. I hope this was a one time with Dube's and not their normal now. read more

Came here after a dentist appointment with a buddy of mine. We aren't from this side of town but they treated us as if it was our 100th time there! Got a lobster roll and a triple combo (both come with fries). Asked if I could sub for onion rings (which they don't normally do) the manager/owner gave me an order on the house! I didn't get her name, but everyone there is a total sweetheart! The food was great, the staff was wonderful, and I'd def recommend to stop in if you're in the area! Lengthy drive to Salem from Logan airport area hotel was absolutely worth it. My only disappointment was that they didn't have any chowder. ("Chowda" if you're from here!). I had a combination plate of fried clams, oysters and shrimp served fast and piping hot. All was fresh and sooo delicious! I asked if they would substitute the oysters for scallops and they were happy to do it. A friendly local neighborhood place that's kept supper clean and serves some seriously good seafood. September 2, 2022, I had lunch at Dube's restaurant today. Had to inquire on seating policy. Two very nice patrons suggested that I should wait, the waiter will be out shortly because they were waiting for their bill. I took a table in the picnic area and eventually the waiter did appear. A very nice, accommodating young woman. I ordered the fisherman's plate. She said apologetically that there were no French fries and I requested onion rings which she said she would try to affect. Another waiter brought out some nice warm rolls and butter. So far, so good. When my order arrived, the union rings were floating in grease at the bottom of the bowl, the whole clams were bland, the white fish were little, and I mean little pieces of something. Did not taste like haddock or founder, and the shrimp was just OK. I'm done. Won't be returning. I must admit, the wait staff was great!!! read more

Great food! Coming in was a bit awk as no one greeted me or told me where to sit so I was a bit confused but I went out of my way to ask someone at the bar what to do and she said just sit anywhere so I sat and very prominently someone came to take care of me. I love places that give you bread and butter and they did that's a plus would have been a bigger plus if the bread was warm haha their style is cold bread but still good to have. Meals are around 19 per person excluding drink. I got the fried shrimp plate. Large portion for the 19$ you spend on it so that is nice. Food was nice and fresh and came super quick. Waitress was very nice and attentive to my water needs as I drink a lot of water and finish my glass about 3 times a meal haha. Place was quiet and not busy at all. Curious dining experience at what is one of our favorite restaurants on Saturday 4/22. My wife and I arrived at 4pm as we like to beat rush and it was pretty empty. Food was good as usual but our waitress was so inattentive and ignored us even though it wasn't crowded and we are frequent customers who overtip to a fault. Even my wife who never gets upset or complains was ready to ask for manager as our waitress just ignored us for long stretches of time at that early hour prior to it getting busy. So curious we were ignored that I only left a 15o/o tip when I generally leave 30-40o/o tip. read more

I drive Motorcoach and yesterday (4-21-2012) drove the MCLA ball teams to Salem State. Asked a groundskeeper where the best clam chowder and fried clams were and he told me it was within walking distance. Have to agree with everything said here about Dube's having the best fried clams ever. The tartar sauce was worth mentioning too. Cole slaw was not to my liking, but that is just me. I like creamy cole slaw with NO vinegar. Theirs was closer to sourkraut (which, ironically, I love) so left the slaw and thoroughly enjoyed quite possibly the best fried clams I have ever had. PS. If you're on vacation, go where the locals eat and this is it. I've been to a lot of overpriced eateries in Salem, but this was my first time at Dube's. The fried clams and hand-cut onion rings were terrific, as was the service. I didn't get her name, but a petite blonde with a shell necklace who made you feel like you were at home. The portions are huge! Honestly, the small onion rings is an appetizer for four. My fried clam plate could have fed three-four as well. Just remember this when you order because if you have no way to bring home the leftovers, your best bet is to really share entrees. The pictures you see of portions are no joke. I only ate a tenth of my clams and all of us (three generations of strong women) had to box up most of what we had. Only real downfalls, the drinks are expensive. $8 and up. My daughter is a server while going to school full-time in an upscale restaurant (this one was not) and was shocked at the bill amount so it isn't a cheap local eat. $21 and up for dinners. Also, the place IS tucked away so go slow, listen to your GPS, or you'll miss it, but lots of parking in the back and always nice to get away from the crowds in this town. And like any fried foods, it is going to be a bit greasy, but the batter someone complained of in another review did NOT slide off the clams or the onion rings. They were well done. However, they offer most everything grilled as well and most importantly, the clams were the big belly beauties you come to love in this area. Enjoy! read more

Mixed bag. We came here parched and hungry after a day at the beach. The warm welcome from the staff and the laid-back, cozy atmosphere made us feel right at home. As a refreshing appetizer, we shared a side salad, which was large, crisp, and topped generously with tomato, cucumber, and red onion. Good ranch dressing too. We also enjoyed some complementary bread - yummy. We split a bowl of clam chowder, which was chock full of clams. However, it was VERY thin - more of a soup than a chowder. We split the Triple Combo, featuring shrimp, scallops, clams, and fries. Tasty shrimp and scallops, and quite possibly the best fries I've had at any restaurant - just so perfectly crunchy. But the clams. I wanted to love them. I am OBSESSED with whole-belly fried clams, especially when they're fresh and have that light, slightly sweet taste. Let's just say it didn't happen here. Not by a longshot. I was looking forward to their "famous" onion rings, as I saw them piled high at every table! They were ok. I love fresh onion rings, but I wasn't crazy about the granular/sandy texture of the batter. Not quite the smooth, crunchy, golden rings I was hoping for. Now who doesn't love a sauerkraut with personality? I'm talkin' a tangy, pickle-y sauerkraut that isn't drowning in mayonnaise. Now that's how you make cabbage 'n carrots proud! The only problem is, the sauerkraut is served much like a lemon wedge or a sprig of parsley - a garnish. WE NEED MOAR SAUERKRAUT! My lemonade was tasty, but it came in a super tiny glass. Even the water glasses are small. Why? Scrolling through the Yelp pictures, it's apparent that the glasses used to be a lot bigger. Lovely little place full of locals. We started with a "mini" serving of "famous" onion rings . They came heaping high on a 9 inch plate! Some mini!! The rings were thinly cut, tasty, mostly crispy but a bit too greasy. Next we had a generous bowl of clam chowder with LOTS of clams and potatoes! Very nice favors in the thin cream broth common in this area!! Highly recommended! Lastly, we had the seafood stuffed haddock. The haddock dish was delicious with the haddock cooked perfectly! There wasn't much seafood flavor in the stuffing even though the stuffing had plenty of seafood. Next time I would just go for the haddock stuffed without the seafood and save the $7! This was recommended to us by a local as "the best seafood!" It certainly is seafood. Just wasn't to my taste. The portions are massive, which I suppose somewhat mitigates the large price tag for what I consider to be basically roadside diner food. Must be a local fave, I guess. I had the shrimp roll, which is like 6 pieces of fried shrimp on a very sad looking hot dog bun. My partner had the triple combo....the shrimp was edible. The clams and scallops...not so much. I don't know if anyone cares about coleslaw but it was inedible. Was disappointed and still hungry and out $50. read more

Short and sweet review...greasy fried foods especially clams..batter slides off leaving the belly exposed. Also sandy. Best items are their fried onion rings and their friendly service. Their kitchen needs to time the food orders so they come out on time. I had to wait for my order while others in my party ate. First time eating take out, curb side pick up. I was told 10-15 min until ready. When I arrived and called to let them know I was outside staff came out to car to tell me another 10 min. They were very apologetic, no big deal. Happy to know that the restaurant was that busy in this covid world. Food came out and agin staff very apologetic. The seafood was excellent! Had the seafood stew, fried shrimp plate and a small onion ring. The portions were large, the food warm and the $$ reasonable. However, one person in our party ordered the Chicken teriyaki plate. The chicken was awful; chewy and tasted as if it had turned. Called the restaurant and explained the issue. This is the place you go to hear thick Boston accents and meet a group of good friends for some greasy, fried New England comfort food from the sea. Vegetables are banned from the menu. Parking near the adjacent swamp is easy if you have good tires. (In California, we might call it an estuary? wetlands? nature reserve?) The hostess, wearing her cleanest Pats t-shirt mutters "sit wherevah ya waaaahnt". I tried not to be Lucille from "Arrested Development". Google Klimpy's if you haven't seen it. You know she's being friendly on her terms. No bs fake nice here. With genuine c.1960's imitation wood panelling, this place is a priceless slice of the North Shore. Serving us five old queens, the terrific waitress has a heart of gold. For lunch, $26 will get you get a PILE of fried clams, fried shrimp, fried haddock, and guess - fried flounder on a bed of fries with all the tarter sauce you want. And a little paper cup (consistent with the early1960's theme?) of cole slaw so you can tell Mom you ate your veggies. Side note: That was damned good slaw. Bet if I asked for more, the waitress would have given me a bowl of it with a smile! It wasn't cabbage soaking in mayo, and it tasted fresh. As if all of this wasn't enough, there's a basket of fresh bread with butter on the table. Both my bf and I are -- let's say, "big eaters". We split the Fisherman's Platter and there were still leftovers to take home. Our friends had....?....who cares, was too busy chowing down to notice what they ordered, but they all looked huge plates of nom nom. There's a full bar, but I was visiting from out of town and didn't want to give new friends, who weren't drinking, the 'wrong' impression, lol. Bottomless coffee was fresh and tasty. Again, our waitress took good care of us. This is exactly the type of place where I would tip the hard-working people 25%, had a generous new friend not grabbed the tab. Unbelievable quality seafood. Fantastic service. Don't let the look of the outside fool you! They are open. (except Sundays) The place is really cute inside and very clean. Litteraly I have no idea why this has a good rating. My girlfriend and I came inside kinda a weird entrance didn't think much of it. Seemed very clean inside. We got our bread to start right there is when I should have walked out. The bread tasted as if someone sprayed perfume on it. I received my water it too had that perfumey taste. Our food came both my girlfriend and I could barely eat it so we asked for something else and that was horrible too. They charged us for 4 meals! And my girlfriend was getting sick all night. I never been to a "bad" restaurant. This is horrendous definitely one of the worst I been too. read more

There's no place like Dubes. In the last year I've moved from MA and no longer able to get my weekly Dubes. If was a staple during both of my pregnancies. Triple combination, baked haddock, peas and carrots from a can, bread and butter, rice, tarter sauce, shrimp po boy. I miss everything about Dubes. The price was unbeatable. The clam chowder isn't someone I like here, and the specials with pasta are always amazing like their fra Diavlo. My favorite is their ratatouille which is zucchini and onions in a tomato sauce. Been driving by Dube's for years as I head out to the more famous shops in Ipswich and Essex, but on a Friday in Lent I decided to give Dube's a try. The place was packed at 5PM! Mostly an older-and based on the banter, a local crowd, but that makes sense given that the restaurant is hidden deep in Salem, away from the tourist attractions. For a place that focuses on seafood, they don't offer a simple fish and chips, so I ordered the Fisherman's platter of fried clams, shrimp and two types of fish. (No scallops?) Can I say disappointed? For $31.00 I received a soggy pile of about 8 clams, 3 shrimp and four or five small fish bits that were more breading than fish. This was set atop a pile of soggy french fries, and a side of dry coleslaw, and tartar sauce that was pure mayonnaise. It wasn't all bad; the full belly clams were sweet, and left me wanting more. read more

My father would never take us to Dube's. He was bothered the place has no windows. But Dad wouldn't take us to Hilltop Steak House either. Something about it being affiliated with the Boston Mafia. Not sure if either is true. The Clam Box and Dube's tie for my favorite fried shrimp and onion rings evah. Love the baked stuffed shrimp. Awesome fried clams. No stale oil. Dube's was usually the place of choice when I lived back East. Closer to home, open year round and no ridiculous lines. I has great old New England atmosphere right down the the wood paneled walls. I'm 43 years old and I've been going to Dube's for 43 years and in 43 years, other than finally excepting charge cards about a year ago, it hasn't changed one bit and I guess I find that comforting. It's dark, the walls are paneled, the booths are old and I swear the dinnerware is the same stuff I ate off of when I was 6 yrs. old and I don't care. The fried seafood is the best around, the staff is friendly, the prices fair and the portions are generous. If you're looking for atmosphere or the "Whimsical Dining Experience" go to Not Your Average Joe's or Bugaboo Creek or something like that but not to Dube's. On a side note, the last time we were there a family of four sat next to us and all ordered fried chicken. Ordering fried chicken at Dube's should be considered a sin. A little disappointed in our time at Dube's. Wasn't expecting a dark bar, which is fine but not what I want on a beautiful sunny day. Service was fine. We figured we'd split the fried clam roll w/ fries and cole slaw for $14.95. A lot of clams spilled over the kind of buttered and grilled roll (not a normal hot dog bun, not bad tho). The fry job was good but the clams were tiny. I'm not a big big belly fan but this made me think of the HoJo's clam strip meal. Fries were decent, cole slaw was super sour. Then the bill comes and it's $2 more for the dish (she says it was stated on the menu but neither of us saw that) AND there's a charge of $1, I assume for the bread and butter. I hate that shit. This isn't Europe where that's the norm. If you bring bread out without asking, then don't charge for it. Not the stellar experience I was expecting. read more

I will start by saying, if you are looking for fried seafood, look no further. Dube's is the only place you want to eat. I consider myself a fried seafood consort, lol, I have been everywhere for fried seafood, and I find time and time again, that most places that have these reputations for being great are just average. I have been eating at Dube's for over 20 years, I find myself day dreaming about their scallops, and FYI I am a clam guy. The scallops at Dube's explode in your mouth, they have the most amazing taste, and I usually go with the clam and scallop plate. I have eaten almost everything on their menu; I truly think everything is amazing. So if you find yourself driving to Ipswich or Essex for fried seafood, don't bother, Woodman's, The Clam Box, none of these places can hold a candle to Dube's fried seafood. read more
