I'm sorry to say that in 5 years the service has, both hilariously and sadly, not improved in the slightest. The store is still a complete mess, with an ongoing infestation and eye-popping prices. It is commonly out of stock of the most basic foodstuffs, the freezers and shelves are usually half-full, and still has only one cashier most of the time. I'd avoid it unless it's a total emergency... actually, no, still avoid it. One of the local supermarkets will likely have what you need regardless. read more

I avoid this Duane Reade like the plague. Any time I've gone in there, there's only one employee behind the counter checking people out and always a long line as a result. Usually, there's another worker nearby, but they're often either ignoring the phone that's seemingly always ringing off the hook or doing absolutely nothing. I ordered photos to this location once. Walgreens photos are typically ready within hours, so when my order was still "processing" after a couple of days I decided to stop by. The worker rudely told me the photo machine wasn't working and gave me no information about when it might be up and running. It has now been over a month and a half since I ordered "same-day photos" and my order hasn't been processed. I now go out of my way to visit the Duane Reade on Steinway and Broadway or the CVS on Steinway and 31st. Do yourself a favor and do the same! read more

This is a review for the pharmacy. Apparently in our good old American prescription drug culture, where the answer to anything and everything that ails you is to pop a pill, our pharmacies are apparently so overloaded with work that they can't answer your calls. Also, this is what happens people when mega-mergers are allowed to happen. 'This merger will help improve our service to clients and give them more options in their healthcare.' Please. It's about CUTTING COSTS and MAXIMIZING PROFITS. They don't give a shit about their employees. Don't give a shit about customers. I just tried calling the pharmacy and was put on hold, with the message saying there was ONE CALLER ahead of me. TEN MINUTES later a woman picks up. I say something. I'm put on hold again. She answers again. I tell her I need to check my prescription. She puts me on hold AGAIN. It's now been 15 minutes and I've been put on hold and transferred AGAIN. I have never in my life had such an experience with a pharmacy. Never. What on earth is going on at this place?? Also....very confusing.... their signage should say 'Walgreens/Duane Reade', since apparently they are both. When I first needed to fill my prescription and with a WALGREENS (due to my insurance card), I was like 'WHERE's WALGREENS?'...then I look it up, and keep seeing Duane Reade. Honestly, I waiver back and forth between how I feel about this Duane Reade. What I like is that it's always clean, well organized, and pretty standard for a DR. However, the check out line can be atrociously long. Usually someone is quick to open another cash register, but if no one take initiative, it can take a painstakingly long time to get out. However, once you get to the front, you usually can get out quickly (though it kind of irks me that rarely a DR employee says anything to me or smiles...). I noticed that they added the small carts that can be rolled, which was a perk for my errand run today! read more

Very clean and organized. I always seem to find a reason to stop here after a manicure! It's well organized so I'm always in and out. I've used the pharmacy services here too and the staff was very friendly and quick, they are also great at following up with you if you send in a prescription online. She took immediate action and went to supply room and brought out reusable bags, and her timing was perfect, as I approached a cashier lady at the cashier line, she took out the reusable bags so I can purchase it for the goods I just bought. Truly a disgrace how this particular Duane Reade forces its employees to work in extreme heat constantly in the summer. Every summer for the 5 years I've lived here, the air conditioning is consistently broken. It's difficult to bear 10 minutes in there, I really don't know how the employees do it. Pharmacy review: This is the worst pharmacy I've used and as soon as I'm able I will be switching. I've had some new issue every time I come in. They are not consistent with what they tell their customers and one pharmacist this morning shook her head and audibly told me I was stupid and didn't understand when in reality I kept telling her I understood what she was saying but it was completely opposite of what I was told the week before. Inexcusable. Please educate your workers on the policies in order to provide consistency to your customers and learn to be more patient and respectful when individuals are frustrated that they are unable to receive their medicine because of your inability to effectively instruct them on policies and what needs to be done. read more

Summary: avoid this Duane Reade or just stop going all together. I've been coming to this Duane Reade for over year now and I haven't had any problems up until about a month ago. As with many Duane Reades...the lines are long, the staff provides common sense answers - if needed and it's a overpriced. Up until recently, they just began offering cash back. Gold star! (that's where the one star came from) Anyhow, this DR has cashiers that go out of their way and try to relate to you by making unnecessary comments about your purchases! Nice. A week ago, I bought a lighter for my partner (they only had Nirvana and ZZ Top lighters.) I asked if they had a plain one (less expensive.) The guy responded with "no, but you can rip off the plastic picture after you buy it." reALLY?! REALLY. The future is doomed. Tonight, I had another run-in with the same cashier. I bought some tea, night lights, Christmas cards for next year, etc. I emptied the basket and out of courtesy asked "where would like me to place this (the basket?)" He said, "where you found it." My bad! Then he made a comment about the night lights and asked "is someone scared of the dark?" I didn't respond, because I don't need to explain that I may (or may not) wake up in the middle of the night to snack, run full speed ahead into walls...head first, etc. OR maybe it's because I'm buying them for a family member with Dementia, Alzeimers, etc., because they wake up in the middle of the night...in a panic...screaming, because they think they went blind, because they can't see anything...because...it's...dark. Who cares?! Don't waste my time, try to multi-task or anything else! Just check out/bag my stuff! Upon my return home, I noticed that one of the nightlights (I bought two), were missing. I looked double checked, but couldn't find it. I called DR and supposedly the dude forgot to put it in the bag. REALLY? I've been visiting this store for the past seven years, it's the closest drug store from my apartment. The staff is great, always friendly and helpful. The pharmacy is very accommodating. Recently, this store was bought out by another company but kept the same brand name and I have no problem that... But, what I do have a problem with is that they have doubled the prices on basically every thing since this change happened. Visited here, earlier today, to take a passport photo. The quality of the passport photo was piss poor. It looks like it was taken on a disposable camera from the 90s. I was so worried it wouldn't be accepted for my passport application, that I ended up going to CVS on 31st & Ditmars Blvd. where I paid the same price for a MUCH better quality photo. really not sure about all the bad reviews of this particular duane reade in astoria on steinway , very spacious inside, well stocked shelves , clean store , lines move quickly. workers seem nice and i got what i needed which was the walgreens brand paper towels and bathroom tissue which are 4 bucks each and 2 for 7 bucks. due to my walgreens card which is also honored at duane reade i massed many points which knocked off 4 bucks off my totaled which also included two boxes of cereal which i could not pass up at 1.99 per box. i did find the clearance section which has a mix of stuff 50 percent off and more but lipstick , mascara , garlic tablets , travel clock , stop barking dog collar , etc , is not high on my cant pass on a huge bargain list . end of review , my boys are waiting for me at gyro world. read more

The pharmacy is an absolute disaster and is mismanaged. Between pharm techs that are impatient and throw tantrums; to the pharmacist who actually never calls the doc to refill prescriptions after assurances that he "will call the doctor, no problem" to outdated prescriptions, this location is undependable. Understanding that the customers should be responsible for their prescriptions, their system can't save the scripts and the pharmacist will yes you to get off the phone. There's a 24-hour CVS on Ditmars and another location just two blocks away with a friendly and helpful staff. read more

Well, it's open 24 hours so you can get ripped off in the middle of the night if you want to. The only possible way to save money here (or maybe not "save", just "not spend as much") is to use the store card and only buy loss leaders from the sale flyer, otherwise be prepared to pay twice what you pay elsewhere. I was paying $15 for condoms before my wife found them at another local pharmacy for $8. EIGHT! And I want to relate a recent experience at the store. There is a gentleman who works there, the last two times I was there he was standing at a register doing something on the screen but he waves off anyone who approaches him to check out. He literally wagged his finger at a lady. I assume he is a manager. On my last visit the line was 5 or 6 people deep and growing. One of the cashiers asks to go on her break, and he (same guy) lets her go without even bothering to look and see how long the line is. The other two cashiers look at each other like "why can't she finish the line first?" They actually used the intercom to call someone to come over and help them. How many times do you have to wave people off before you start to think "maybe I should start helping" or "maybe I shouldn't stand here"? It shows me that customer service is a low priority at this store, management is just going through the motions. The only thing saving this from a 1 star review is the cashiers seem friendly and they speed you through check out so you can get out fast. read more

It is utterly and ridiculously unbelievable what this store can offer to improve and simplify the lives of busy people. Besides the diverse products ranging from baby wipes to car oil, they also provide a plethora of services all in one shop. You can get your pharmacy prescriptions filled, photographs printed, Blu-Ray movie rentals instantly in your hands, flu shots administered and banking completed via their ATM machine. Their collection of new movies for rentals is pretty impressive and I am also able to do some grocery shopping here. What really prompted me to write a glowing review for this place is the quality of their photo prints. It is significantly better than any of the other stores in the area. I actually had our family photo Christmas cards printed here and I was really happy with the results. I initially had the cards printed at another neighborhood store and the images came out underexposed and severely cropped. This store was able to provide me with sixty cards in less than an hour. This is certainly not a true photography lab, but for the price and quality of their prints, I was happy enough to write a review to share my positive experience. Another wonderful aspect of this store is that they are open 24 hours, making it super helpful and convenient for those who work late hours. The young staff and managers are generally friendly and helpful. The mom and pop stores in the community are still my favorite businesses to deal with but it is tough for them to compete with the diverse products, services, and convenience of this little powerhouse store. read more

This is the absolute worst photo department. The store in general isn't great, but I'm not sure how you can submit online photo print orders, receive confirmation and pick times, and nothing be ready. And instead of apologies or some sort of acknowledgment and promise to correct the error, the manager just says "oh yeah, the photo girl was out or she only prints once a week or yeah, we don't have the paper and she forgot to order it." This is such a waste of time. Why bother offering the service and why isn't the corporate office checking on these issues? Never again. I'll only support CVS or Rite Aid. Worst pharmacy ever. Last time I was there I got home and they gave me the WRONG prescription. When I returned it they said they couldn't refund me but only give me a Duane Reade card with the credit. Today I went back to fill a prescription ( only used them again because of the credit ) and was told the card wasn't good on pharmaceuticals. The manager came over and was extremely rude. Love this place and pass by it every day and through it when I can. Since they renovated it and put in all that FOOD I have been even more in love! They have recently, however, done away with most of the amazing frozen food that was in that freezer island like the Marie Callender entrees and the wide variety of microwaveable snacks and replaced them all with DiGiorno's pizzas! I mean, what's up with THAT? The freezer is about 3/4th full of frozen pizza now, mostly DiGiorno. Who the hell is buying so much pizza that DR would dedicate that much shelf space to it? Disappointing, and I hope that poor sales of those pizzas forces them to go back to the the variety of selections they had when they first put the freezer section in. I mean, that much pizza in almost the entire freezer section is straight ridiculous. Put back the steamable meals, mozzarella sticks, Friday's appetizers, and Healthy Choice entrees. Then, a couple pizzas. Really. Good points: humongous bag of pretzels for 1.59 that lasts me a whole week. BEER. Although on the pricey side, it's just cool to know that the option is there when the bars close! :P Fresh fruit - which I don't buy here, but if I ever get a craving for an apple at 3 am, I know where to go. I like the new design of all the DR stores, and this location does not disappoint on that tip. They could charge a bit less for liquid and powder make up, though. Frickin $14 for Revlon liquid foundation is ridiculous. Used to cost only $8 once upon a time. Nearly $10 for pressed powder. What the hell. Thank God I know where to find the stuff cheaper elsewhere. And what they charge for women's sanitary products should be against the law. I mean, they really stick it to women even on the simplest items like panty liners and pads ($8 for not even 40??!). It's almost more cost effective to go and buy baby diapers and just cut them into strips instead. I also make it a point to buy those types of purchases elsewhere at a fraction of what DR charges for the same stuff. NEVER at Duane Reade. I just refuse. Aside from those few pet peeves, it's great to have them in the neighborhood, right down the street from me! ok, ok, i get it - duane reade does stock basically everything a human (or their domesticated animal) could possibly ever need, but why do they charge twice as much as rite-aid for it? even the store brand is more expensive than most brand name items at their competitors. there's no reason i should be paying 50% more for a bar of soap, roll of paper towels or a pint of ice cream than i would at my local bodega. isn't the idea of "big box" stores (let's be honest - that's basically what DR has become) to cut down prices to drive out competition? not that i'm at all in favor of eliminating small business, but if duane reade is trying to do that, they should at least be better at it. that said, they do have EVERYTHING, and the staff is relatively helpful and friendly. i can only hope the prices are so high so that they can pay their employees a living wage... but i doubt that's the case. read more

I wish I could give this place a negative star rating. This has nothing to do with the merchandise or the prices, it has everything to do with the store manager Harry. He is extremely rude and disrespectful to customers and it seems as if he treats the rest of the staff the same way. I went in today to return an item I had purchased earlier in the day from a Duane reade in the city. He said since they didnt have the item there that I would have to return it to the original store. I asked if that was a DR return policy and he said no but he didn't recognize the make up I was returning so he couldn't do the return. I called the store in the city and they said it shouldn't be a problem and asked to speak to the manager there. When Harry got on the phone he said well I am not taking the return here this customer has been a stress and hung up on the other manager. I called the other manager back and she herself said he was rude and his actions were unnecessary. I had even offered to exchange the item for store credit to make it easier for them but Harry just wasn't listening and extremely rude, he walked away while I was still talking to him. I later went to another DR a few blocks away on Broadway where the cashier was extremely helpful and processed the return right away and didn't understand why Harry gave me such a problem. I returned to the store to ask him why he have me such a hard time when the other store processed it so quickly and then he called me a liar and started changing his story. I will never go back to this Duane reade again. The cashiers were very nice but the manager Harry is a total nightmare. read more

This review is strictly regarding the pharmacy. I would never recommend this Duane Reade pharmacy to anyone. I have been a Type 1 diabetic since I was 5 years old (now mid-20s) and have lived all over the country, and never have I encountered such a poor excuse for a pharmacy. Last night I took a new prescription for birth control in, and also planned on filling existing scrips for test strips and insulin syringes. I, along with one other lady, waited for one of the three staff members to help us for about 20 minutes. Finally, a young girl came over and I gave her my prescription and was about to ask to refill the other two, but she interrupted me and asked, "Have you ever been here before?" I have been going to this particular Duane Reade pharmacy once every two weeks for over a year. Finally everything is figured out and she says that I should come back in 30 minutes. So I do. I wait another 25 minutes or so, and am then informed that both the birth control and the insulin syringes are out of stock. I was a little irked because it was Saturday night and I needed to BC the next day, so I wished they would've let me know that before it was so late and everywhere was closed. (I have also tried calling in refills here 3-5 days in advance, because they never have anything in stock, but generally they tell me no problem and then I get there and they are out of stock). I asked them to still give me the test strips, which are right behind the counter - I can see them. I asked the staff member what we can do to resolve the consistent problem of things being out of stock. I told him I had tried calling things in in advance but that hadn't really helped. He blamed the issue on the fact that Duane Reade is being bought out by Walgreens and that they have to stock only Walgreens brand generic drugs now.....I was mildly offended that he thought I was ignorant enough to believe that BD insulin syringes, or any other of my scrips, came in Walgreens brand. 30 minutes later, after the staff member who was helping me just kind of walked away without saying anything, I still hadn't been checked out. I just walked out. I live right down the street from this place, so I tried to stick with it because of convenience....but this experience was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. This is my go-to Duane Reade because it is closest to where I live, however I was very disappointed with their customer service recently. I stopped by on my way home from work and really had to use the rest room. I was there to pick up a prescription and grab a few items. I first picked up the prescription and then asked to use the restroom. I was told I would have to ask a manager up front. I proceeded to go up front where I was told the manager was in the back. The woman up front also told me no one is allowed to use the bathroom. Not even a paying pharmacy and regular store customer. She told me she would double check with the manager, after I complained and she paged him over the intercom. Well, after waiting 10 minutes and no manager showing up, i proceeded to do my shopping and get out of their. The wait for the manager was taking longer than the walk home and I was in physical pain of having to use the rest room!! I completely understand stores not opening rest rooms for the general public, but a paying customer should have that option. Especially at a pharmacy!! It is literally unhealthy to hold in your urine. Duane Reade was putting me at risk of a UTI, by not letting me use the rest room. Corner of happy and healthy? I think not...... read more

Not a big fan of Duane Reade in general because whatever they sell is overpriced and this of course is one of their links. Another thing is that they take forever to prepare your medications, 30 minutes minimum no mater how small is the order you need to pickup. Two stars just for being clean and organized. read more
