Luckily La Gare was open. It was moderately busy and relatively quiet when we entered, then two very loud tables entered along with kids who did laps around the cafe - not the cafe's fault, but not pleasant either way! Anyways, back to the food and drink. The coffees were very good, and the food, once it came (there was a bit of a mishap in communicating the order to the chef, we were told), was okay. Pretty standard Dutch fare. They apologized massively for the delay with the food and offered us free coffees. I totally get why, since Bert makes a delicious coffee and is also a very cool guy who is in for a little chat. The good reputation of their Antwerp location also does not hurt at all. Antwerp location? Well yes, Caffènation is a much loved coffeeshop in Antwerp. We are very lucky that Bert fell in serious love with a Dutch girl because that is what brought him here! And now he owns the Caffènation location here in Ansterdam. Cool stuff right? Coffee lovers will really enjoy the big drinks menu at this place which offers a lot of different choices like cappuccino and espresso but also more adventurous drinks like a 'Ginger Spice' or a 'Bitter Moon'. First of all, the service/the owner was up his game in a very attentive and polite way, at the same time very laid back chill kinda way. Love that about a place as much as I love my good cappuccino. We ordered one cappuccino and one latte, 2 sweets: pear chocolate cake and fruit passion pastry. The cappuccino is really good, so they have my blessing from now on. When I initially was told to meet some friends at this café, I wasn't sure if I was going to be eating Chocolate Chunk Power Bars with a side of lean Vanilla Protein Shake or having a bland saltless combination of steamed broccoli and baked chicken breast sure to help rebuild torn muscle tissues after a hard work out. We found out after eating (because I managed to Google translate that the dish should've included mussels which it didn't), that this day apparently was the restaurant's "leftovers of the week"-day - they served us the leftovers from that week and the waiter didn't tell us earlier. When I complained, he said, the "leftover-day" was announced on the first page of the menu. We made it very clear to him none of us spoke Dutch from the beginning, but he never cared to enclose this information. However, I did check the menu's first two pages on Google Translator again and did not find any information on the leftover-day. When I kept complaining he told me "to stop giving him this attitude" (actually quoting him here). We ended up paying 15€ for each of those Pasta Gamba LEFTOVER dishes no one told us about. I am not enclosing the waiter's name here in public but if the restaurant is interested, I most definitely can. Do not come here, especially when you're a tourist.
