I've been taking photos my entire life, with a variety of cameras. I've had Polaroids, Kodaks, Vivitars; eventually I moved to digital, where I had a great little pocket Pentax followed by a not-as-great Canon. Last fall, as I was about to get married, my now-wife and I decided to upgrade before our honeymoon, and we splashed out on a Nikon D5000. We spent 11 days in Paris, taking lots & lots of photos, all on program mode, because we had absolutely no idea how to use any of the manual modes on our fancy new camera. Then we came home, and the camera sat collecting dust for 3 months. Until my wife found Okello's classes and bought me entry to Take Your Camera Off Program Mode, Part I as part of my birthday gift. I went to class yesterday, and it opened my eyes. Now, I've got at least some rudimentary knowledge on how to get the most out of my DSLR. I rushed home when class ended, anxious to show my wife some of what I'd learned. Okello's a great teacher, and this isn't a skill everyone has. He speaks simply and plainly, with a very good combination of hands on experience (bring your camera with you!) and visual aids showing what the proper settings can produce (and what the wrong settings can produce too). He kept a room full of 25-or-so jaded New Yorkers riveted for 3+ hours, at 10am on a Sunday morning; no small feat. Suffice it to say, I'm going to be signing up for Part II of Take Your Camera Off Program Mode, and I'm going to be doing plenty of practicing in between. read more

I just took the "Take your camera off Program Mode: Part I" this past Sunday and was blown away. I went in expecting very little, arriving shortly before 10am, with my DSLR. Hosted in a random space, the workshop filled up rapidly with 22 people. While this was a "basic" class, there were actually a number of professional photographers attending. I never realized how many people shoot in "program mode". I found Okello's teaching style to be extremely intuitive. He started with the simplest concept and then built from there. The class is hands on, which is the best way to learn this stuff. And with Okello's guidance through the material and the interactive question/answer nature of the class, I really did feel as though he cared about us understanding how aperture and manual settings can improve one's photography. The workshop was 4 hours long and for the price, I don't think it can be beat. I will definitely take other workshops with Okello and can't wait to see the improvement in my own pictures! read more

As an avid traveler, I finally invested on a DSLR camera since their prices has come down a lot. After reading through the bland owner's manual, it didn't help me figure out how to apply most of the basic features for photo techniques. I searched through Yelp and found Okello's class. I attended "Take Your Camera Off Program Mode! Part I" I read the reviews and can say the positive reviews are dead on. This is a GREAT class for beginners, who know very little about using Aperture, ISO, Focusing techniques, shooting in RAW, etc. It's great class for beginners like myself because it's a hand on class on how to take great pictures using all the manual adjusting features of a DSLR camera. The 3 hour class went fast, with lots of info and Okello explains the subject well. He pauses to answer any questions and uses analogy to explain his lesson. He is patient and provides hands on training. My recommendations for taking this course: pay attention, take fast notes and bring your owners manual if you don't have a Canon or Nikon. read more

I've taken both Part I and Part II of Okello's course. I got a DSLR in January 2010 and had been playing around with it but never really used any of the features. Okello's class not only gave me an idea of general photography terms (ISO, aperture, etc) but also how to use my camera as an instrument to get the picture the way I want it, not how the camera wants to film it. He brought in things like extra lenses and flashes and let us play around with them on our camera to be able to try new gear before buying it. This was AMAZING. I have to say I learned so much more than I learned from trying to figure out what everyone's talking about on photography websites and the little booklet my Canon D550 came with. Okello is extremely knowledgeable about teaching you what you REALLY need to know in order to get a better control of your DSLR. He goes over aperture, ISO, shutterspeed, as well as composition, raw/JPEG files, lens you should buy (dat 50mm woohoo!) and even some of the editing programs. I am definitely off the program mode. He made learning easy and answered the questions I had. Granted I did take classes prior to his on my dslr but the classes were too technical without any real explanation. I finally understand why it's so important to know how to adjust ISO and aperture. I'm no professional but I want my photos to be on my wall. And now I know how to get them. I took a workshop and was disappointed that the material was far too elementary. I contacted the instructor before the class, told him about my experience and what equipment I had. When I showed up, the class was full of people who weren't even sure what kind of camera they had ... I think if you know your class is comprised of novices and someone comes in with a $3000 camera and a set of objectives (I wanted more in-depth knowledge of complicated features, which I did NOT get) the instructor has an obligation not to waste that student's time and money. I think his delivery of the material was well-organized--it just was not what I wanted--and what I clearly articulated before the class. The class is good for people who don't know what aperture is, but I felt ripped off. And I was unhappy about his response to me when I told him my concerns. I just felt like he cared more about collecting my money than if I got anything out of the class. Sorry, would like to, but cannot recommend to anyone but very beginning photographers. read more

Okello's class was fantastic! The three hours moved quickly and were packed with valuable information. Everything I learned in Part I of Take your Camera off Program Mode was exactly what I needed to help me get past the feeling that I didn't know how to use my camera. Other reviews mention the confidence attendees have gained from Okello's courses, and I definitely experienced the same thing. He even gives helpful exercises to keep you practicing what you learned after the class. From sign up to the post class exercises, I was thoroughly impressed and would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to become a better photographer (for fun or for professional purposes). I purchased my Nikon D3100 more than a year ago, and it wasn't until last night at Pittsburgh's session that I truly got to experience how amazing the camera really is. Okello is a TERRIFIC teacher for the novice-to-intermediate photographer. He does an excellent overview of the main features of DSLR photography while throwing in comedy and personal experience. He is approachable and personable, and I wouldn't feel embarrassed to ask him even the silliest questions about my device. Okello's "Take Your Camera Off Program Mode" workshop is perfect for both amateur and advanced photographers. As a novice photographer and new DSLR owner, I had been overwhelmed by my camera's many features and just wanted to learn how to consistently take good pictures. I've found some decent resources online but was hoping for a solid introduction to DSLR photography. Okello's class completely surpassed my expectations. His instruction was thorough and the demonstrations were great. I was most impressed by Okello's clear teaching of complex photography concepts such as aperture, ISO setting, shutter speeds and histograms. I now have the confidence to fully handle my camera and take great pictures on my next vacation. If you want to spend a ton of money learning how to charge your camera battery or upload pictures to your computer, there are plenty of other courses like that in NYC. DO NOT BUY CLASSES FROM THIS BUSINESS: After attending a class in Pittsburgh, I purchased Okello's online courses. I did not receive a code for the classes in a timely manner and we agreed to a refund. It has now been almost two months and he has not responded to any of my repeated attempts to contact him through Facebook, his website or the phone number listed. Especially after seeing that he is reaponding to questions about photos, I feel like this is extremely unprofessional and caution everyone from making purchases from him. I hope this is resolved so I can update this review. It's a shame for him to compromise his reputation over $100. read more

I took this class in Philadelphia, though I would guess the NYC class is exactly the same. I wanted to share my review because this class is definitely worth taking!! This class does exactly what it advertises! It teaches you how to get your camera off program, and start learning about all the features a DSLR camera really offers. The class was incredibly helpful and I'm so glad that I went to it. Okello is extremely personable and amusing throughout the class, which helped it not to feel boring or stuffy. He completely "gets" that we're novices and the class was structured perfectly. He uses lots of visuals and also attaches Canon and Nikon cameras so you will see on a screen exactly what you should see on your own camera. It is very hands on and gives you a chance to really try what you're learning. His teaching style is intuitive, which helps him answer questions easily. He seems very knowledgeable about the different cameras and the different features/set ups of each. His take-home booklet was also extremely helpful. I wrote all my notes in there and the pictures he included correlate with the pictures he used in class, so I have lots of reminders of what I need to be doing for each section. I would definitely recommend this class for beginners or those who THINK they're not beginners...but still always shoot on program mode! :) I learned quite a bit and hope to put it all in practice enough to take the second class. I just attended Okello's workshop 'Take Your Camera Off Program Mode' and I feel much more capable of using the different functions on my camera. Okello has a great personality and understanding of what beginners need to know. The presentation was well-structured, professional, and even entertaining. And I must say, it seems pretty obvious that these workshops are for novices. If you consider yourself advanced and you're not using your camera on program mode, then it doesn't seem fair to leave a bad review because you attended a beginner's workshop. read more

"M", "A", and f-stops - a mystery no more! Attended Okello's workshop last night and I must say his approach to demystifying the whole aperture/f-stop/shutter speed/ISO thing is fantastic! I've been taking photos for years and--if I do say so myself--I've got a good eye and have taken some very nice shots. But these shots were all in Auto mode. Now, I want to take it up a notch (thanks, Emeril!). And after Okello's class, I feel that I have a running start. He does a good job of focusing on the basics, and clarifying what those basics are. His mantra is "practice practice practice" and he sends you away with a great little booklet with all the info he's shared in the class, plus exercises to help with your practice. Now I know why my lens and camera sometimes seem to fail me even in Auto...and what I can do about it. Now I know why I need a "prime" lens......I'm so excited about all this new knowledge. Clarity and a strong, knowledgeable focus on the basics, done in an informal, yet authoritative manner. That's Okello's class! Just finished the Take Your Camera Off Program Mode! Part I. I could not be happier with the knowledge I walked away with in just three short hours! I went into this class not knowing the difference between Aperture and ISO. Not understanding what my shutter speed had to do with anything. I thought I was in over my head bu Okello made it all make sense. Okello's analogies and explanations were able to get me to a point where the Manual mode is no longer out of my realm of capabilities. I cannot wait to sign up for part II. Okello is professional, engaging and clearly cares that you walk away satisfied. I can not recommend this course enough. Okello is an accomplished presenter--he is charismatic and knowledgeable--I would definitely recommend his classes to anyone wanting to learn how to manually use their camera. Okello somehow is able to present to a roomful of people with all different cameras, yet you feel as though he is talking to you about your camera. He is patient when needed, yet the class is fast-paced and jam-packed with everything you need to know to finally be brave enough to switch your camera into "M". I took the "Take Your Camera Off Program Mode! Part I" workshop with Okello and am so happy that I did !! I have a Canon Rebel with very little experience in using any of the manual settings, so I wanted to learn how to take advantage of the camera features instead of just using as a point and shoot in automatic mode. He did a fabulous job of explaining the different settings you do (and don't) need in a way that I could understand and then apply. I went out in the city for a couple hours right after and just walked around taking pictures both outside and inside. I was amazed at how quickly I could take the picture I wanted by applying the concepts he went over, and I am excited to keep practicing what I learned !! Okello was a great teacher, and kept everyone's attention (which wasn't necessarily easy at 8 am on a Saturday morning!) Also - I appreciated hearing about the other accessories that he recommends, without spending a fortune I know which equipment I can purchase to really get the most out my camera ! I've taken three classes given by Okello, both "Off Program Mode" courses and Lightroom. At the time I just had a basic (but old) DSLR). And even so, after the classes, there was a 180 degree turn around in the pictures I was able to get out of it! Before the class, the only setting I knew anything about was a fast shutter speed to stop action. But with the 50mm I went out and bought the next day, I now know MUCH more about how to use the other settings to my advantage. Okello is a great teacher and his classes are time and money well spent. I've upgraded my gear since then thanks to spot on recommendations by Okello. And even though he ribbed me for having an off-brand flash, I do see the value in having the proper equipment. Thanks read more

I had taken both part 1 and part 2 of the DSLR workshops and did not find it to be impressive at all. Part 1 seemed to a basic review of High School photography for adults. It reviewed the basics of photography while failing to review of the characteristics of a great photo, portrait, etc.. The class was not structured, as the instructor kept skipping through topics on the powerpoint, many times skipping a few slides and then going back insufficiently explaining the item that were hastily skipped. Against my better judgment, I still went ahead and took part 2. This seemed to be a bigger waste of money then the first class. I was expecting to learn more besides the basics. However, the instructor informed us that he had changed the course material to be more of a review of the part 1, and maybe briefly touching on new concepts. The change was due to suggestions he had previously received. This was highly a disappointment and definitely felt like a scam. If previous students want to review materials from the first class, they should retake the part 1 class. Not create another course to trick users they are going to learn new materials and then just waste their time by reviewing the basics again. Even the powerpoint use the same examples from part 1. You would think the instructor would be wise enough to make the course interesting and not try to put his returning customers to sleep. This DSLR workshop was definitely a waste of money. The instructor appeared to be friendly and caring, but noticed that it all seemed to be an act. He did not take the time to fully explain the concepts to people who seemed to be struggling. Instead, the response was met with frustration and vague answers. Clearly not a sign of a good instructor! I also noticed he was more eager to help other people who he had befriended either before or during the class, while others sat there confused. It appears that this class/instructor only cares about money. This was definitely apparent by the instructor's interactions which I observed both times. My one advice is to save your money, and instead purchase a DVD on your camera from your camera shop. This will clearly give you the same if not better information at fraction of the price. I've noticed that these DSLR workshops are exactly based off these DVD's, books, and local classes held by numerous camera shops. You'll definitely be able to find a more informational source for half the price! read more

I took the workshop in Philadelphia center city. i was so disappointed !!! the moto of the workshop was to rid you of your frustrations from not knowing how to use all the features on your camera and all it did was get me more frustrated . i dint know wat was going on coz Okello the instructor kept moving way too fast and before i could try and process the first thing he has said he had jumped to 5 things ahead and i was totally lost. He did encourage everyone to ask questions but by the time you fig the thing out and formulate a question he has moved onto the next top... and 90 % of his answers were "i can't tell you that" " you have to figure it out yourself wat lens you want or wat iso to click in " " all i can say is go home and play around with your camera click pictures and you'll figure it out". If that is wat i was supposed to do why would i spend for your class.????!?! investing in a photography for dummies book or some other book or just maybe reading the manual to my camera would have been so much more helpful. It was a total waste of my money and my sunday morning ...i actually walked out of the class during the break coz i dint want to waste another hour and half in that class and getting more frustrated bout not knowing how to work my camera or making it more complicated to begin with. Also a note to the instructor since he loves using car analogies - if ur teaching someone to drive you dont just take them on the freeway on day one !! slow down ....i wonder how you will ever manage a 600 ppl class .?!?! read more

I took Okello's "Take your camera off program mode" class this weekend and I learned so much. The workshop was a huge amount of information packed into 3 hours. Okello's teaching style is easy going and relaxed and I enjoyed every second of it. I like that he offered recommendations on lenses, as I have yet to buy my equipment so I'm looking for some advice, I upgraded to add the series of videos so that I could watch the initial program again and continue with other videos for the coming months. I find his teaching style so easy to learn from - it seemed like a no brainer. I highly recommend the workshops! read more

I took Okello's Part I class on how to use your DSLR camera and then went out for a photo workshop session in Central Park. I found both classes to be informative and useful. The class sizes for both sessions was a good teacher/student ratio and everyone was able to get their questions answered and get the help they were trying. He has a great knowledge of cameras (different models and brands) and seemed to be able to help everyone find the settings they needed to begin shooting proper photos without the automatic settings. read more

I took the Part 1 class a couple of weeks ago and am so happy I did. Okello answered questions I had before the class by email within a day. He is very easy to reach and very responsive. And the class itself was great. Very easy to follow for a novice like me. After just a few hours in class, I left and could not wait to start taking pictures. And they look so much better now in program mode than they ever did in auto mode. I would easily recommend this class. read more

I attended this class last week and was disappointed. He seemed like a really nice guy, but there was too much to absorb to really make much use of it. His big promotion was to buy another lens and to practice, practice, practice. I can handle the practice part, but not too keen on focusing so much on a lens that no one in the class had. When I asked specific questions about how to get a better image on specific pictures I showed him, his answers were to "wait until a cloud comes by" and "use software to fix it later" (which is another $300). He said to try lots of settings and we would be able to figure out what works and what doesn't. Really? I could have done that and stayed home. My friend was there, too, and her summary was, "Too much information." It is not for the beginner, but might be useful for those who understand aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Those are the 3 things he focused on (along with the software and buying a new lens), but I'm still not sure how to take a picture using anything other than the Automatic setting. I bought the Dummies book for my camera and am learning more now. read more

Disappointed. Was really looking forward to this workshop. Thankfully, I registered with "pay at door" rather than giving him a credit card number. Received a confirmation & order number for registration. Sunday morning came, raining, dismal. Drove from NJ to Brooklyn, paid $13 toll, $10 parking, got to the hotel where the workshop was supposed to be and nothing was there. Hotel workers had no idea what I was talking about. I called the phone number on my registration, & a groggy man answered & said the date had been changed, & that I SHOULD have gotten an email notification. Well, I didn't get any such notification. I shouldn't have just hung up but I did. But after I schlepped all the way back home & checked my email to make certain I hadn't received anything from him (I hadn't) I tried to call him again. Not surprisingly, no answer this time. So I emailed him & said I thought it would be fair that if & when he schedules another date in my area (because I'll be out of town for this supposed reschedule & unable to attend) that I should get a $20 discount to make up for HIS mistake & my inconvenience & expense. And again, not surprisingly, I haven't received a response. I don't think I'd say this guy is a scam artist, but I do think he's careless & doesn't give a damn. Would have been so smart & easy for him to just give me a $20 mea culpa & have a happy customer. Now I'll just make sure to tell everyone & anyone who will listen that this guy can't be trusted & he's a bad business man & possibly full of b.s. Happily, there's no shortage of other photography "experts" out there for us all to learn from. read more

I am not one to usually write reviews, but I had such a bad experience, I felt compelled to share. First just let me say that it was held in a hotel conference room where in the room next door there was some sort of concert going on. The band was SO loud that the he said the hotel had given him his money back on the room. However, none of us got a discount on the class. It was extremely hard to hear him and was very distracting. About half way through, the music stopped, and it was much more pleasant. I attended with a friend, and at one point she got lost during his instructions about something he was showing us. I WHISPERED to my friend in order to catch her up. About this time, I hear Okello stop and RUDELY address the class about how it is very distracting to other people when someone is talking. I literally turned around to look behind me because I thought he had to have been talking to someone else. I then realized he was looking straight at me. I couldn't believe he singled me out so rudely, but ESPECIALLY when we had been listening to him over extremely loud music for half of the class. I completely lost all respect for him and would not recommend his class to anyone. read more
