I wasn't allowed to use the kitchen cook food and the room I rented upstairs was cold damp mouldy and had a massive hole in the ceiling and roof. She was charging me a fortune to live there. I left after two months moved out and lived else where. I had no hot water wasn't allowed to use the kettle in the pub for a drink. I was screamed at on diary bases because pots was left inside the sink they wasn't mine pots someone else lived there to and had a room. The attitude from her was terrible very very bullyish behaviour. I'm glad I left I ended up having to seek professional help because of the abuse I received by her I hope I never see her again and go into that pub it was like faulty towers times that by 1000,000, it should have been torn down years ago flithy dirty dangerous damp and mould holes in ceilings no hot water I felt awful for the staff they suffered abuse to awful bully manager and landlady

The food in the Bistro and at breakfast is fantastic, it's a shame I didn't manage to try the tweed restaurant as the bar was set very high. The room was very large, as was the bed with very good furnishings and large bathroom. It fell down on the extremely weak shower performance and an old, low down TV. The location by old Abbey and the grounds of the hotel are simply spectacular. With views and grounds like these why would anyone need a TV? The hotel will loan cycles and rods for those who want to fish or explore the area. Although don't forget that fishing for Salmon or Sea Trout on a Sunday is still illegal in scotland. The hotel room guide also quaintly reminds you that although they allow legal fishing, it is 'unethical to fish for trout on a Sunday' I'd love to give this hotel 5 stars but cannot bring myself to do so as the shower was just too poor. However, would I go back? Hell yes, this is the best hotel experience I've had in a long time and will seek it out if I'm ever in the Borders again.

Our room was a standard room I think, on the ground floor. It was very spacious with a bed roughly the same size as China, 2 armchairs and a dressing table. The bed and pillows were so comfortable I could happily have taken them home! The bathroom was also spacious and well-equipped, my one complaint would be the water pressure of the shower (slightly like a kitten licking you clean!). We did not dine in the restaurant but attended a Christmas party night in the hotel - the food was fantastic, surprisingly so, as these buffet style things are usually not up to much. The main course of buffet carvery beef and turkey was fantastic - the beef melted in the mouth! Breakfast was a little disappointing (who on earth toasts potato scones!?) but plentiful. The grounds are beautiful, have a stroll around. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the front desk staff. All in all I would recommend it, and would return here for a romantic weekend or to relax.

There are 2 different eating styles, either bar food in the Courtyard Bar, or a la carte in the restaurant. The bar food is good, although the setting is a bit 'ordinary' compared to the rest of the hotel. Usual bar meals - fish and chips, steak pie, roast dinners, salmon etc, all freshly cooked and served by friendly and helpful bar staff. They have a good selection of malts.

Dinner was downstairs in the hotel, a quiet dining room for clients only, a tad uncomfy in that there was only two couples and we could hear each other's conversations, opposed to a bustling, noisy restaurant, but the food was excellent and service was impeccable.

They had two crystal champagne flutes made with our names and wedding date for us to keep and handed them to us as we walked out of the ceremony, what a lovely gesture and a treasure we will keep forever.
