Of late, menus have become a bit more adventurous, and the quality of materials and cooking continues to rise. Given that this pub is part of a chain, I can't see it ever aiming for a Michelin star or even "fine dining" status, but it is way above the typically dire standard of pub food in Scotland and on the very short list of places we are willing to go to for a meal out in south Edinburgh. Cheerful and friendly waiting staff only add to the positive experience. Recommended for a hearty meal.

(Our last experience with hotels in Europe was not a great one. We had a tiny room and a tiny bed,) When we got our room it was bigger than we expected. It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

Impressive to say the least. We took my mum there for Mother's Day as they had a reasonably priced set menu on offer (I say reasonably in the sense that I'd have expected to pay more at a chez roux restaurant!). It seemed to go down well (i don't eat fish so couldn't try) although Simon said he didn't think what he had was representative of the menu description. Clean plates all round though! I liked that you didn't have to pay a supplement for the cheese as all too often greedy restaurants attempt to do. Not here! 6 small but adequate bits of cheese each of which are explained upon serving. Top it off with quince jelly, a generous portion of crackers, grapes, celery AND chutney... Drool..... The food was gorgeous, not without tiny faults here and there but you'd have to look very hard to pick at anything really. The small touches really made the experience 5 star for me. Homemade canapés, warm bread and homemade treats with our coffee inc macaroons, blackberry jellies and chocolate covered walnuts. I was so stuffed by that point but it would have been rude not to....:) The only thing I could criticise was the service. It was a bit slow. I don't mind having a lazy Sunday lunch but why they moved us from our comfy fire seat to the dinner table but took another 15 mins to serve the starters is beyond me. Move us when the food is nearly ready next time please. Unfortunately it started to snow as we left - I had really wanted to take a walk around the grounds. For single occupancy I think you pay from £210 upwards. it's outrageous that single people are always charged more. As we have the money.... When dining you are being served with gallant mannerism ensuring that your needs are being met satisfactory. The food is very tasty and delicious, but take into account that if you eat in the a la cart restaurant you might be hit by a higher than £50 bill charge per person. So be prepared! The menu changes, such expect to get something different another time around. If you want to spoil your other half - then do! There is no doubt that because of its prestigious and expensive existence this place might only be affordable for special occasions or if you are not hit by recession. But if you are able to go there, enjoy the tranquillity that it has to offer. I know I will be back soon for Afternoon Tea, which is around £18.50 and therefore "just" affordable.

There was a lack of elevator to the second floor, which understandably could be an accessibility barrier. I stayed in a family room which we got at a reduced price because the room was quite outdated and due to be refurbished. The room was large and had a very comfy bed. The room had a great layout; the two single beds were further down the room and were separated by a curtain giving more privacy. Our deal included breakfast and I enjoyed the choice; fry-ups, toast, cereal, fruit, yoghurt and pastries. Unfortunately the croissants I had were warm on the outside and a tad soggy in the middle. Breakfast was good but the quality wasn't amazing. At night, you could buy a drink at the bar and sit beside the cosy fire on comfy sofas and chairs which made the hotel a winner in my eyes as I hate being stuck in a hotel room all night. Gin lovers will be happy to know that they have a huge list of gins - there's a little greenhouse in the bar area where they show all the gins they have on offer. Outside the hotel, they had chickens and a bee hive as well as an outdoor giant chess board and small golf area. In the hotel, they have a kids play group and you can hire bikes. If the quality of breakfast had been better, I would've given it 5 stars.
