This was a nostalgia trip. I remember being a kid (primary age) and getting to go here with my granny and grandad just for a wee tub of ice cream for the occasional after dinner treat. My granny loved rum and raisin, and I developed the taste for it too.
That is about 20-25 years ago, and for the past few years I've wanted to go back but had little opportunity. That is, until I convinced Smurf that she wanted to go out there for a birthday treat. I hold my hands up, I manipulated her good, but thats what all the best aunties do.
Its not as far outside Dumfries as I remember, I had prepared myself for a long trip and it actually took about 10 mins.
We got there and Smurf headed straight towards the outdoor play park and I headed over to the cows at the other side of the fence. I have a thing about cows, I love them. I'd actually have one as a pet if I could.
After a while, we went inside and ordered ice cream. All in, it cost about £10 for a mug of coffee, a pot of tea and 2 bowls of ice cream (3 scoops in each and a flake). I scoffed mine, and it was good. Smurf ended up playing with hers for a bit then left it to go and play with the other kids in the play area at the back of the shop.
The cafe area wasn't overly busy at 11 am but it looked like a mothers group or bunch of friends had chosen it as a meeting place, kids were happy with ice cream and toys, mums were happy with coffee.
Service was good, prices were decent and I really enjoyed my visit. I will definitely not be leaving it over 20 years for my next visit. read more
