My STRONGEST my strongest advice is to read read read and be sure you have the documents that are needed for your type of transaction. I advised this due to personal experience.,lol. Generally speaking, allow several hours. Don't try to squeeze an appointment in before work or at lunchtime. Yes there may be times when it's not busy, but you don't wanna take that chance. And finally, when you get up to the desk inside the door be the first person to say good morning or good afternoon or anything pleasant to the person behind the desk. It's magical you will see and continue doing that with each and every person you have to encounter. Overall, my visit was about one hour and 45 minutes. After the initial check-in after I received my number, I had to see an agent to review my application that I filled out after checking in at the front. Upon Kia's review and payment, I was then sent back out to the waiting room to wait for my turn for photo and photo drivers license. I did not need the real ID. I will say when I got to the photo desk, I was not acknowledged by the agent, but as soon as I said hello, my name is Sue what is yours , again It was magical! We got there and while we were waiting we heard the one person working there say she got flustered and accidentally shredded his Photo ID card. Because of that, they had to put in a request for a new Photo ID card that will take 2-3 weeks for it to arrive. My son needed his Photo ID today, and there is ZERO they can do about it because they need the Photo ID card in order to provide my son his license. We had that, but it was shredded by one of the people working there. They literally have one job to do - Provide you with a photo drivers license. They can't seem to handle that. In addition we are now in a jam because they can't provide him his license because she shredded the document. Take your chances at a regular PennDOT location, this place is no longer the place it used to be.

My number was called in less than 20 mins and it was printed by 9:58. Was so surprised. It's probably worse the later you go in the day, it got busier and busier as time went on. I highly recommend getting there when it opens. Seems like if you do, you'll be able to get in and out of there in less than two hours.

Once you get inside the building (the line often snakes outside into the parking area) ask the guard that is just inside the entrance door if there is a separate line for "pictures only" and they may let you bypass the line. You'll need a camera card (mailed to you after you renew your license) to get a number. With the number, you can proceed directly to the "A" station to get your picture taken. If you need other services or didn't renew on-line, the wait can be 2-4 hours. (KOP DMV, if you are reading this, it would be really helpful if you set up a separate 'pictures only' line right at the main entrance.)

There was a person checking documents and answering questions. I was given a number and some forms to complete. When my number was called, I went to an area where I was able to sit down, get my documents processed and pay the fees. Then I was given a new ID card which is good for 5 years. Note that the REAL ID does not say REAL ID on it, it's the same as my old ID with a gold star on the upper right side of the card.

It's definitely better than the one in Wilmington, which can be busy, and on Wednesdays, there are extended hours until 7 pm. You just have to make sure that you have your documents and hope that you caught the employee on a good day to make things as seamless as possible. There's an app that you can use, but it's always preferred for me to have the card. Pictures sadly are always a pain and mine is horrible.
