I've never been to a meadery before but it's been a goal of mine for a while. A friend's birthday celebration landed us at the Drinking Horn because she had similar goals. It did not disappoint! It's a cozy space reminiscent of a drinking hall with large tables and a bar. The employees were nice and helpful in getting us set up with flights so we could try all the different types of mead. And I do mean all the types. We tried every type of mead they had! We played a card game we brought with us while passing around each flavor. Birthday girl got the actual horn to drink out of. We had a great time. There were a few types of mead we didn't really care for, but that's bound to happen. We did find some favorites though and it was just a great experience. Drinking Horn Meadery was such a fun experience! This place is decorated to resemble a Viking hall with benches to sit at and medieval decor everywhere. I'm not sure there was food, but there were a ton of meads to choose from, and they also offer mead cocktails. My husband ordered a flight of 6 meads and I tried the cherry on top mead cocktail. Everything was great, and we even purchased a bottle to go. Jasper was awesome and took great care of us. Very friendly and attentive. Finally stopped into this amazing meadery in Flagstaff. Wow what a find, this place is amazing. First off the ambiance is quite welcoming and in line with the theme of the place, very aesthetically pleasing. The sever was a very lovely young lady who also was dressed in an outfit that fit the theme. She was great, and very well versed on the various meads served. On my recent trip I did not get a chance to visit Mead Hall. My friend who is a local had grabbed a few bottles and she and I did our own little flights. This being my first experience with mead it was cool to try something new . I did enjoy the Unicorns blood and the one that had a cinnamon taste to me. Drinking Horn is such a cozy and fun downtown spot to grab a drink. Their team was welcoming and kind, they gave some great menu recommendations as well. I loved that their menu had fun themed names including Toothless You can order food and they even have suggestions for local options for food that pair well with their mead. We decided to walk over to pick up food from Cornish Pasty and the food paired well with the drinks. We love that they had a non-alcoholic options including a Dragonfruit Honey soda that could also be served as a mocktail. I wish they had a few different honey sodas with a range of sweetnesses like they do for the regular mead. Stumbled upon this place on our last visit and we went twice in the weekend we were up there. It had a fun theme throughout but not too cheesy or overdone. This was a pretty cool experience! My husband and I came in looking to try something a little out of the ordinary. We have a friend who is learning how to make mead, and we wanted to try what it's actually supposed to taste like lol. The inside has this medieval vibe that's pretty unique and on-brand for the mead. There was some sort of board game tournament going on the day we came in, which I thought was a good sign seeing locals and regulars in here. The staff was alright, sort of like an Uber driver who doesn't talk, which isn't a bad thing whatsoever. We got a flight to try out as many flavors as we could. We definitely found some that we liked more than others. I was a little surprised at how expensive the flight was, but I don't get out too much, maybe that's just how much flights cost. This was a really fun place! I really am not much of a drinker at all but whenever I see a place that serves Mead, I am there! You walk in and there are tables and a fireplace as well as a bar where you can try their wonderful selection. They also have all of their current selections listed on a board above the bar. Service was really friendly from the nice man behind the counter. He helped us pick out which things should go in our flight. The flight was also amazing! Drinking horn is a casual establishment decorated in a medieval style with a "honey " theme. You sit on benches at long wide tables like people did in the Middle Ages. They had a band playing medieval tunes the night we were there. Several groups were playing board game and other groups were talking. It was a fun relaxed atmosphere. The mead itself is quite sweet and they have a wide variety of mead and mixed drinks. They also have craft sodas (pop) for those who don't want alcohol. I ordered a flight which included apple, a ghost pepper mead and another one which I've forgotten. I loved the ghost pepper mead. It goes down easily and has a hot follow through (not unlike a shot). The apple was good also because there was a tart note which offset the sweetness of the mead. This is a fun, relaxed place to hang out. I highly recommend it! read more

Where was this place when I was a college student? I recently returned to Flagstaff for a college reunion and decided to wander downtown for a few drinks and found Drinking Horn Meadery on Route 66 near San Francisco. I always enjoy a good mead, so I wandered in for a beverage. There is only street parking near the place, so be prepared to walk a bit. The interior of the meadery looks like an old Viking hall with wood tables and décor that invokes a post-plundering Smörgåsbord. The theme was continued by the presence of some costumed individuals from the Oktoberfest party. I took a seat at the bar and looked over the large menu. Their mead is based on using local honey flavored with many different ingredients. On my trip, they were also partnering with Proper Meats next door for food orders. I chose a wonderful prickly pear mead which was a good use of the unique fruit. The mead is strong with a little natural sparkle. Flavoring can help those not used to the unique taste of naturally brewed mead. Many people choose the flights or samplers, or the brave ones can drink from the horn! This is a great option for Flagstaff and is pretty popular cementing its popularity. Was in Flagstaff for a long weekend and had no intention on coming here but I'm so glad we did! I've had mead before and my response was always "it's...fine". That's because I've never had the Drinking Horn experience! The Drinking Horn Meadery takes you back to the days of Vikings and glorious feasts and wrestling dragons. From now on, I only want mead if it rises to the level that DH provides. The interior of the place is just perfect. From the banquet tables to the helmets and weapons on the wall, the stone fireplace to the giant horns to drink out of-this place just gets it. After drinking here we felt like real Vikings so we immediately raided and pillaged Sedona. It was glorious. After we burned down Sedona, we returned to DH the next day. We bought bottles of Mead to take home with us to Tucson. There, we will teach the people how to make real mead and be real Vikings. We will burn down the city and begin anew, building a village of honorable MEN teaching their sons to hunt with bow and arrow. Women will teach their daughters to sew and cook and clean. This place caught my eye last weekend when my friend and I were driving through downtown Flagstaff, so when I realized we had about half an hour to kill before we could check into our Airbnb, this was a logical stop. I'd been to one other meadery before about a year ago in the lower Hudson River Valley in NY, and while I liked the place itself, the mead wasn't great - I thought it honestly tasted like honeycomb mixed with rump (they had other options there, thankfully). This was definitely better. One piece of constructive feedback for Drinking Horn - it feels more like a museum than a gathering place. There's A LOT of empty space in the room and on the walls, and for me just didn't feel very comfortable. I don't claim to be an expert on the Middle Ages or Nordic/Viking shizzle, but I have to think a mead hall from that time period would have been homey and cluttered, kind of like a pub. We were able to easily secure spots by a TV showing a fireplace (another easy fix, depending on the time of year - an actual fireplace instead of a flat screen), and the woman manning the front was very friendly and personable. Definitely no issues there. The one other meadery I've been to literally just had the one honey-ish flavor, so I was impressed by the sheer amount of options. Admittedly I was swayed by some of the names, so when I ordered my small mead flight (three samples), I went with Unicorn Blood, Mango Reaper and the more normal Strawberry. The Mango Reaper was my favorite by far. As its name implies, it had both a sweet and spicy edge and tasted an awful lot like a cocktail infused with ghost pepper. That's definitely one I'd get again. The Unicorn Blood was pretty tasty as well (on the fruitier side), but surprisingly the weak link was Strawberry, which I figured was the safest bet. For me at least, it tasted too much like cough syrup to be enjoyable. Also a cool touch - each flavor was labeled with a symbol (Norse I'm assuming, but I don't know for sure), and the flight had a cool feature with you could remove and attach the applicable symbol to the appropriate flight. I've had my share of wine flights before, but the optics on this particular one were very unique and innovative. I don't have a lot of comps for this, but I think the small flight was around $10, possibly even less. Given that we were just hanging out for a while to get a nip, that seemed like a pretty reasonable price point. This was one of my favorite stops in Flagstaff, and certainly an establishment that set itself apart from the multitude of restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

Yup- I was very, very happy ;) Love the little shooter glasses and how they are set up by runes! First Flight: Black Cherry- apparently I got "a look" and John said he doesn't get to see the excited look very often- this was my first sip and I think my 2nd favorite Elderberry- light, refreshing, delicious Prickly Pear- another light and refreshing one Strawberry- I enjoyed this one a lot too, berry forward Blue tooth (blueberry)- liked, although this one was the bottom of my likes, there wasn't one I didn't like Root-bee-ah- Oh yes! It smelled and tasted very rootbeer-ish! Second Flight: Taditional- a true honey mead and it was great! John said we should have tried this one first, because it paled in comparison to the flavors Pomegranate- OMG- this one was my favorite Metheglin- honey, orange peel, black tea & cinnamon and simply delightful! I loved this one too They had great merchandise too- you can buy bottles of mead to go, Viking horns, horn mugs, candles, honey, t-shirts and hoodies! It was pretty laid back as we walked in, we were greeted in the perfect amount of time. The decor was just right for the ambiance they were looking to create. No clutter at all which is something I look for because the focus should be on the mead. We decided to dive in head first and we ordered the canoe which had a generous sample of all the Meads available. It was awesome we went from Traditional to Mango Reaper to Merka and the list goes on. The selection has something for everyone and the staff will share their knowledge and recommendations for you. Was in town for my daughters who graduated and live here and was pleasantly surprised at this Meadery. Usual Viking-esk themed decor, though a bit light on decorations having lived in Europe for several years and seeing these Meaderies up close but clearly, great effort placed into the decor, design and ambiance. No food, but you can certainly bring in your own, sit down, raise a beverage, yell 'SKOOL' and enjoy mead with everyone. Wanna play a game? Bring one! Super fun environment, merch from the local Beehive company, beard balms and oils and even cleaner restrooms idolizing the significance of 'mead' being made by honey as the key ingredient. Note the bathroom floor and wall tiles in the shape of hexagons... you'll get it. But really, a well done Meadery, super-friendly service but alas, not cheap. Not necessarily a hit on this place, but it isn't cheap. 3 bottles of mead and I'm out the door for $80+ bucks, seriously so visitors be aware.
