The store's striking brutalist concrete architecture is the perfect stage for the latest fashions and curated vintage pieces showcased inside. I've always been so impressed by the service at this Maxfield location. You are greeted at the door and the sales people do eye you up and down to see what you're wearing and your personal style but they are courteous and trying to help you find what you're looking for or what brands you like. Luis Rodriguez helped me and my friend this last visit and he is simply outstanding. Such a great eye for detail and so knowledgeable and passionate about Maxfield and everything they have in the store. Really helpful, and he made my friend's visit to the store special and he loved his purchases. This store has always been extremely cool and cutting edge and brought the work of so many new designers to LA. The avant garde design tradition has continued with their installation of a Jean Prouvé 1957 pre-fabricated "Structure Nomade" which was brought from France and reconstructed next to the store at 8825 Melrose, with a 100 year old olive tree planted next to it. They showcase stunning fashion and art installations inside its glass walls. Maxfield also has a dramatically designed Chrome Hearts store (by appointment only) next door on Robertson. You can inquire about it in this store. Maxfield is like a modern art museum with the statues outside, the stark angular concrete walls, the single large display window facing Melrose, the beautiful and dramatic lighting at night and the way everything is exhibited inside. It's definitely a must see in Los Angeles and there's nothing else like it. Items can be very expensive but they also have a fabulous sale at the end of each season that shouldn't be missed.

The 30% off sign & sales rack in front of this store caught my attention, so I stopped in. The Canyon is a quaint little shop that carries apparel, home goods, and vintage clothing. It's nicely curated, which makes it easy to browse through the Boho chic pieces and vintage apparel. They also carry unique jewelry, candles, accessories, and other cool items. It was a quick interaction, maybe 5 minutes, but it left me shaking. there are so many other details of this interaction that contribute to the clear sense I have that it was all racially motivated. After I ended my call and rejoined, I walked away shocked that this woman felt so shamelessly emboldened to police my behavior on a PUBLIC sidewalk. I was embarrassed that so many people saw me get defensive in return and possibly perceived me as an aggressor. Now I am just angry the interaction overshadowed the nice day/lunch with friends/best buffalo chicken salad I had just eaten. I went from looking like a mom, (his words and I agree), to looking like a rock star. I am not kidding here. His beautiful red-head assistant was quite the help, too. She found me shoes, shirts, and ran back and forth while Cosmo decided what was good for my body type. When I didn't particularly like a shirt, it was tossed aside and a new one brought for me. She made me feel like I still had "it." The experience from this shop is worth every penny. Cosmo is a character, that is true, and he knows it. That's how he is. If you are insulted easily or wear your feelings on your sleeve (no pun intended), don't bother going in here. BUT...if you are open-minded, enjoy great entertainment, like looking wonderful, and have a few hundred bucks on you, this is your place. When I get rich, I am "buying" Cosmo.
