You're fed up with the rest. So why not try the best?! I've worn progressive glasses for two years now. For the first year, I tried a conventional optician who over-promised and under-delivered. I tried online places that may be OK for a simple single-vision prescription, but simply don't have the resources to make a properly fitted pair of progressive glasses. I so disliked every pair of progressives I tried that I would only wear shirts with pockets in which I could store the uncomfortable glasses as often as possible. Then, a year ago, I wandered into Ely & Jevon's optical shop, and the experience completely transformed how I feel about my eyeglasses. The glasses they made for me are so comfortable that I often forget that I am wearing them. Gone are the countless little frustrations of the earlier pairs of glasses that just weren't quite right. Their in-house optometrist (unusually in this business the optician employs the optometrist, not vv) spent over an hour measuring and re-measuring my prescription, including about half an hour of walking around the store and looking out the front window at distant objects, while wearing adjustable lenses, until my distance vision was quite literally back to the 20/15 of my youth. After that, Ely spent another hour helping me to choose a suitable frame, then perfectly optimizing the PD and lens position for each eye. When the glasses arrived, Ely double- and triple-checked the fit and gave me a satisfaction guarantee and a nice set of cleaning supplies. A secret of their success is the care that Ely & Jevon put into getting your glasses just right. Once the high-quality trivex lenses come back from the manufacturer, Jevon makes the final cut of each lens right in the store's own workshop, so that the positioning and orientation of each lens gives exactly the right fit. Contrast this with my previous progressives, made at significant cost by a professional optician from my previous optometrist's office, whose lenses were (as measured by Ely) misaligned (improperly rotated) with respect to the frame. There is just no substitute for having the person who designs and fits your glasses be the same person who makes just the right final cut to fit your frames with proper alignment and orientation. You do pay a premium price at Dreyfus Opticians. But when I add up the cost of two failed pairs of progressives from my previous optometrist's office and at least half a dozen attempts to get a usable pair of progressives from an online outfit, the price to do the job correctly looks quite fair in comparison. I certainly would have been better off paying Ely to do the job right the first time. In this situation, one absolutely gets what one pays for. If you've been frustrated by second-rate optician/optometrist service, or especially if you're fussy enough to want an excellent pair of glasses that feels comfortable to wear all day and restores the perfect vision of your youth, Dreyfus Opticians simply cannot be beat. For anything other than a cheap pair of spare reading glasses, I will never go anywhere else. I just can't help raving about the outstanding service I got from Ely & Jevon, and continue to get if my frames need minor adjustments or a replacement screw now and then. read more

I had been stopping in at Dreyfus for quite a few years just to get adjustments to glasses that I bought elsewhere and had been wearing for years. Although they always refused my offering to pay for their time and efforts working on my glasses I made sure to discretely "leave something on the table" before leaving their shop. The time came for me to get some new eyewear and I thought of no other place than Dreyfus. Eli got the difficult task of helping me make a decision and his extreme patience with me was much appreciated. With his help a selection was made and I bought a new pair of eyeglasses. I was very happy with my new glasses and Eli went to great lengths to make sure the fit was customized to my not so standard head and face shape. I felt real good about the purchase but some months later I had a problem with damage to one of the eyeglass temples or temple holder (possibly due to a nighttime rollover during sleep) so I brought them into Dreyfus to see what could be done. Jevon worked with me on the problem and was able to temporarily repair the broken part. We decided it would be best to get new temple pieces not knowing how long the repair would hold up. A few weeks later the temple pieces arrived at Dreyfus and I got the call and came in to get the new temple pieces assembled. Jevon then mentioned what the charge would be for the temple pieces. Honestly, I was taken about by any charge because I made an assumption that it would be under warranty but I was told that wasn't the policy of the eyeglass maker when they considered the damage to be from abuse or whatever. I never disputed that position but I honestly did no recall any mention of a forthcoming charge which was fairly significant but I paid the charge. Some weeks later and still a little disappointed in how things played out I sent a cordial email to Dreyfus explaining how I felt about the situation. Very quickly I received an email and phone call from Jevon. The bottom line was there was obviously a honest miscommunication between us and Jevon apologized (not necessary) and refunded the purchase of the new temple pieces. I even said to him can we return the parts to the eyeglass maker (I would make due with Jevon's repair) with hopes that Dreyfus could get whole and not have any out-of-pocket loss but Jevon politely refused because I believe that no matter what he did not want me walking out of Dreyfus with anything less but new replacement parts. Jevon and Eli are both really good guys. I always knew that and anyone that has worked with them knows that but I also know that when there is $ on the line even good guys can go a little "tail between the legs" when a situation arises where they have to reach back into their pockets to make good on a situation to keep a customer happy. They did it and they did it with honesty, class, and professionalism and I could not have been happier with the outcome. They have a customer (me) for many years to come as a result. read more

There are a LOT of choices when it comes to buying glasses. But, at the end of the day, most of those places sell the same glasses. I used to buy all of my frames and Hoya lenses at Alain Mikli. However, I grew tired of traveling to Short Hills/NYC for them. I did a search for those who sold Hoya lenses and Dreyfus Opticians popped up. Only 15 minutes from my house. So, I took a chance and went over to see the establishment. Elie greeted me warmly and listened attentively to my history of buying lenses and glass frames. In fact, he knows the optician at Alain Mikli, but proceeded to tell me that Mikli sold the company to Luxotica for millions of Euros. That ended my trips to the north, so I asked Elie what he had to offer. He gave me a tour of the manufacturers he sold, which are the most incredibly made and fashionable frames available. You will not find better glass and frames anywhere else. I went in to see him as my eye prescription changed and needed new lenses. I only wear Hoya, which are incredible. Elie was happy to change my lenses in a pair of my Mikli frames. He's been in this business for over 40 years and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that very few have acquired. He is also a very low pressure when it comes to sales. In fact, it's more like talking to a friend than a sales person. Yes, good frames and lenses are expensive. I've been wearing glasses for 43 years and my eyes are the utmost importance to me. So spending money on one of the most important senses one has, is money well spent. Yes, you could go to the 'big box' vision centers and spend $100 on frames that cost them only $3, which are made in china/Italy, for a brand that is licensed through a mega company like Luxotica. If you do that, buy the best glass possible as it makes a difference. However, you could avoid all that if you do yourself a favor and visit Dreyfus Opticians.
