While in town I stopped by here on a Saturday afternoon in hopes that I would get to go inside and…read moresee this place. Little did I know that I would get to that and then some. Upon arriving the streets in the area were blocked off that were having a community event involving several businesses, etc. Walking up to Capri Theater was an experience in itself has I stopped by a TV crew and asked my thoughts on the event and what they were trying to accomplish. After that somewhat uncomfortable moment I made my way to Capri Theater. To my surprise it was open and the staff quickly invited me and my friends inside to experience the place. A little background on the theater; it was built in 1927 was initially known as Paradise Theater. Having gone through several renovations over the years, a renovation projected in the 1965-1967 timeframe expanded the seating capacity to ~500 and it was at this time that it was renamed to Capri Theater. Today, the Capri Theater is owned and operated by Plymouth Christian Youth Center. It seats ~300 and from what I could see, there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. The focus is on continuing to be a beacon in the community where youth can find a safe and welcoming environment to explore crafts, arts, performing arts,etc. Of special importance to me is what occurred on January 5 and 6, 1979 at the Capri Theater. On those days Prince played his first shows as solo artist. Tickets to the performances cost less than $5 and proceeds from the first night went to Capri Theater. As I mentioned the staff was very, very warm and welcoming. Both James and Graham were gracious with their time; answering all our questions. They made us feel at home and mostly let us wander the place. As part of my wandering I happened to peek into the auditorium and to my surprise, the screen had a slide show going with images of Prince. As I stood in the doorway watching the slideshow, Graham noticed me and encouraged me to go inside and check it out. He said it was okay to go up on the stage and just take in the place. About that same time, he put on playlist of Prince music; needless to say, I was in heaven. In the end, my friends and I spent over an hour in auditorium, on stage and sitting in the seats just taking it all in. A BIG thank you to Graham and James for making stop/experience was the highlight of my trip. Lastly, the Capri Theater is undertaking a renovation project to expand their offering to the community. In addition to making updates there will be additional classrooms and multi-purpose spaces along with spaces for developing crafts skills such as wood working. I didnt want to buy discount tickets from one of those websites that charge the business so much, but I did use my Science Museum membership for a small discount online. The tickets seem to always have a coupon for a free kids meal at Salut, so that's a nice bonus too!

North Auditorium - twin Cities ballet Nutcracker…read more In 1989, I saw my first performance of The Nutcracker at the North Auditorium. Thirty-six years later, I brought my son back -- he's about the same age I was then -- hoping to share the magic of Christmas and the magic of The Nutcracker with him. When I called to purchase tickets, I specifically asked whether this was a classical version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, and I was told that it was. Because of that assurance, you can imagine my disappointment when it became clear that this was not a classical interpretation at all. The director took extensive liberties with this 133-year-old masterpiece to make it more "Minnesota." There was a wooden flute meant to imitate a loon, complete with a loon dance. There were Viking elements, a bird dance I couldn't make sense of, and a riverboat scene with fish. Were some of these moments cute? Yes. Were they Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker? No. If I had seen the riverboat dance with the little fish at a student dance recital, I would have smiled and thought it was charming. But when you are expecting the timeless classical Nutcracker -- first produced in 1892 and beloved for its enduring magic -- this reimagining is deeply underwhelming. To be fair, there were positives. I appreciated the relaxed sensory-friendly performance, especially as I have an autistic son. It was wonderful to see so many young children there with their families, and the little girls dressed in their ballerina-inspired outfits were absolutely adorable. The student performers did well, and this was clearly a meaningful experience for them. That said, I only counted about four principal dancers who felt at a professional level. The two principal dancers in Act II who performed the solos and duets were very good, and for a brief moment, I was truly captivated by their dancing. The set design, however, was lackluster -- it felt cheaply made and lacked the Christmas magic this piece deserves. Perhaps the production was working within a very limited budget. I did receive discounted tickets, and I'm grateful for that. Had I paid full price, I would have been very upset. This performance was not worth full price. I love theater. I love dance. I always wished I could have been a dancer myself and took classes when I was younger. I have friends who are professional dancers, now retired, so I understand what the arts can be -- the breathtaking, awe-inspiring, make-you-cry-and-you-don't-know-why magic of live performance. That is what I hoped my son would experience. He didn't. I didn't either. When it was over, I asked him what he thought. He shrugged and said, "Good." And that really sums it up. It was good -- but it wasn't great. It wasn't extraordinary. And it wasn't Christmas magic. If you have a friend or family member in the performance, I understand wanting to attend. But if you're expecting the classic Nutcracker and the kind of Christmas magic this piece is known for, you won't find it here

This unassuming suburban performance venue is the home of a company called Theatre Elision,…read morealthough they host performances from other companies as well. I came in for a Theatre Elision production and I was STUNNED by the quality. They put on "Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812" and it was one of the best music-theater shows I have ever seen. And my credentials in that area are extremely respectable, if I do say so myself. As a venue for theater, this space is small but capable. The lobby has enough table seating in front of an elevated stage that at first I assumed that's where the show was going to take place. But no, the actual theater has all the trappings that a real company would expect, in a semi-black-box auditorium that allows flexibility. There is a selection of beer and wine, and not much else at the little concession counter. The production I saw was so good that I will talk about it with friends for the rest of my life. Super polished, extremely high level of musicianship, and an infectious energy level to match. Theatre Elision did such a remarkable job with this show that I will probably make the drive from St Paul to Crystal regularly for the foreseeable future to see what they do next.

The lobby area is a quaint space with various seating options along with a bar from which to enjoy a beverage. The productions seem to be smaller cast productions with an intimate audience/actor experience. Seating was decent as there are armless chairs in the front and back row, with traditional armed theatre chairs for the smaller/regular sized folk. The talent was great as was the production. There was plenty of parking around the building.

We are incredibly blessed to have this Orchestra here in the Twin Cities. The hall itself is absolutely stunning, has multiple bars and vendors for food and drink before the performances and during intermission. Incredible acoustics, wonderful staff, and always a delightful, upscale experience to attend a performance here.

I've been performing in this theater for much longer than I feel comfortable sharing…read more It's a small (200+) proscenium stage venue with dated but well-maintained furnishings. Honestly not a bad seat in the house. Fully lobby and a separate entrance off of Nicollet Ave. Small kitchen area where refreshments can be purchased at intermission. The backstage area is big enough to house a 30-piece double-decker orchestra (stage right) with dressing rooms off the back hallway. It really is a lovely little space and I have spent many an hour performing in (and having fun) in this durable gem.

The sound system and lighting is excellent, parking is easy and free, and usually there are good seat choices available. Some of the seats are a little snug to me but I like roomy seats! They aren't the digging into your side type of small seats but if you are a little fluffy, look for the bigger seats. Some are wider than others. If you are a first timer, it is inside a church. You can park on the street or in the parking lot. I would go for the lot since its free. Even though this is inside a church, you really don't even feel like it is when you walk in so don't let that deter you from attending an event here. The location is great with a nice variety of restaurants on Nicollet.
