Anyone read "Omnivore's Dilemma" or watch "Food, Inc.?" Well, my interest in where my food comes…read morefrom started over 3 years ago and now I have 4 chickens and 2 mushroom logs with hopes of a raised organic garden in my near future. I stumbled upon Matt, the owner, of Microfarm Organic Gardens. He is a handy guy! He can get you set up with an organic garden, mushroom gardens, chicken coops, seedlings, greenhouses, and compost systems. He even helps install gutters that will drain into rain barrels. Wait, that is not all...he will even maintain your garden when you're away on holiday or if you just plain don't want to do the work, but only reap the rewards. Well, like all good service, he comes at a hefty price. Granted, you can find chicken coops online for half his price, but for the quality and craftsmanship of his work it was worth every penny. We purchased a custom made chicken tractor (it's on wheels and can move around your yard for optimal fertilization). He made it within a week and delivered it. All smiles and very helpful. I trust Matt and his extensive knowledge on gardening, composting, and making things. He does not sell chickens, but can give you a few trusted names of places to find them. You can find him at Atherton Mills Market. He has examples of a 2' raised bed and trellis, water barrel system, and the chicken tractor there. If I could afford all my projects, I would have him set me up for living off my land right now. Until then, I'll save up my money!

The fields were pretty thinned out, but we still ended up with a gallon of 'berries for 10 bucks, not too shabby. This small acreage rotates produce throughout the season - up next is squash, tomatoes, corn. A good time if you dig on the PYO experience, complete with a token farm animal crew - 1 pig, 1 donkey, 1 rooster. Directly across the street from the state line flea market, so you can easily spend the entire day picking first through piles of oddities then planties galore. Prepicked stuffs available if you'd prefer. They take cards, but have no public restrooms, be warned.

The guy who runs/owns it and his wife are very nice and I've received some great gardening advice for the vegetable garden we use to keep at home. The produce is fresh but limited and the actual growing area is fairly small. The farm itself on the other hand is massive! We didn't realize this until we took the hay ride last month and it took over 30 minutes to complete the whole thing. It's a pretty uneventful hayrdide though. They also raise cattle and I think they had a pig and a duck running around. The hayride takes you through the entire farm and all around you can see a bunch of abandoned, dilapidated stables and other old, wooden structures that use to thrive at one point. I certainly recommend going there every time they have something as the have good products at good prices.

Reid's Fine Foods - Wine bar and grocery shopping

As a foodie transplant from the West Coast, walking into Reid's immediately reminded me of a…read morebeloved high-end grocer back home--something along the lines of Draeger's: beautifully curated, family-owned, and designed to feel like a destination rather than just a place to shop. There's a real sense of history here. From what I understand, Reid's is one of the oldest grocers in Charlotte, and that legacy shows in the details. The rich green tile, classic signage, and thoughtfully designed layout create an elevated, almost European-style market experience. It feels polished, intentional, and welcoming all at once. What stands out: * The store is beautifully merchandised and carefully curated with specialty and seasonal items you don't always find elsewhere. * The wine bar and café concept make this more than a grocery stop--it's a place to linger. I've enjoyed flights, tastings, and brunch on the patio, and each visit has felt like a small occasion. * Location-wise, it really depends on which store you're visiting. The SouthPark and Myers Park locations have easy, convenient parking, and there's also a newer location in Ballantyne (near Pineville). The Uptown locations, while not necessarily "easy parking," are incredibly walkable--perfect if you live, work, or have meetings nearby. If you're already Uptown, this is a fantastic stop to pick up elevated items for a beautiful dinner--think wine, specialty cheeses, or even something indulgent like caviar to round things out. One thing I appreciate is that Reid's doesn't try to be everything to everyone. It's not an organic-focused market like Whole Foods, and that's okay--it serves a different purpose. The clientele here tends to be people looking for specialty ingredients, elevated prepared foods, and a more curated shopping experience. Many shoppers probably visit both stores depending on their needs, and I find myself doing the same. When Reid's really shines: During the holidays and special seasons. Their selection of unique, festive, and hard-to-find items makes it a go-to for entertaining or finding something a little extra special. Overall, Reid's feels like a true Charlotte institution--elegant, distinctive, and consistently well executed. It's the kind of place that makes grocery shopping feel enjoyable again, and I'm looking forward to continuing to explore more of what they offer as I keep eating my way through Charlotte. Bottom line: A beautifully curated local market with history, charm, and a destination-worthy wine bar--perfect for specialty shopping, brunch, and seasonal finds.
