We visited Draper's for lunch. It is decorated in the Dorothy Draper style (in which the name gives homage to her). The front right hand side of the restaurant is decorated in traditional pink ice cream shop decor (yes it is part ice cream shop) and the rest of the interior is the restaurant. The service was good. TL;DR: The burgers and shakes are good. The service, order accuracy and fries are not. I was tempted to give this a 2-star rating, but I am going to go 3-stars because the manager did express some interest in making things right. This is really something of a high-end diner/soda fountain when you get down to it. The room itself is very cute. That said, you would not know from the website photos that it some of the walls open onto the casino. That is not too big a deal as the casino opens at the same time the restaurant currently closes (4pm), but some of the machines will make noise in the background from time to time. The "deal" here is the burger combo, which includes a side and a shake for $26 (sort of--we will revisit this in a moment). This is $13 cheaper than buying the items a la carte. We both ordered burgers--mine with cheddar and bacon (specifying that nothing else was to be on the burger) and my wife had cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Her side was fries while I went with the bacon mac and cheese. We both ordered chocolate shakes. When we ordered, the server asked if we wanted the shakes before the meal, with the meal, or after the meal. We stated we wanted them with the meal. As we were waiting for our food, we noticed that there were a few room service-sized ketchup, mustard, and mayo bottles on the table. I was a little surprised by that--you just don't tend to see that in restaurants because that gets a little pricey. It turned out not to be the only thing resembling room service. Also, as we are waiting, we watch two male servers play-fight near the server station. Take the horseplay somewhere else. This isn't McDonald's--not that it would be any more appropriate there. After a relatively long wait (15 min) in a near-empty restaurant (it was after 3 pm), we received our food. The lettuce and tomato I specifically said I did NOT want were there. The bacon was not. So was a nasty pickle in a pool of pickle juice sloshing up against the buns. No chocolate shakes. I ask the server for a small dish so I can put the unwanted vegetables aside rather than plop them on the tabletop. She takes about 5 minutes to find one and bring it over. She takes even longer to secure my missing bacon. Fortunately, my burger did stay warm while waiting. Once I got the burger in order, it was actually quite good. It was a hefty portion of meat. I had three slices of flavorful bacon (although this may be because they were sending out the missing meat, so your mileage may vary) with good cheddar. The bacon mac and cheese side was a generous serving that was very good, too, although it would have benefited from bacon being throughout the portion, rather than just some bits on top. My wife's burger was also excellent, but the fries were way undercooked. Even just to the eye, they were too white to have been done. They needed at least another minute or more in the fryer. The missing shakes finally showed up halfway through the meal. Fortunately, they were also very good. A decent size and a perfect thickness. Drinkable through a straw, but with some serious viscosity. Shortly after, while we were still eating, the server brought the check. At these prices, she might have waited to see if we wanted anything else, but that was no big deal, especially as it was near closing time. What WAS inappropriate was her coming back to see if I had left payment in the folder while we were still eating our lunches. Seriously? Can we finish our food first? The service overall was pretty bad. I would not have left a tip of more than 15%. Unfortunately, there is an automatic 20% service charge--another thing that is expected with room service but not in the restaurant--added to the bill. Now the lackluster service makes sense. When your tips are guaranteed, your incentive to provide excellent service drops. Also added to the bill is the Greenbrier's bizarre Historic Preservation Fund assessment of 9.75% (a pretty brazen profit padder since money is fungible). Plus WV sales tax (which is not their fault). That said, even without the tax, this is almost 30% surcharge on the meal when I would have tipped at most 15% given the crap service. We did say something to the manager who asked what room we were in--I assume to make an adjustment--but we were literally walking out the door after lunch was over. Then he offered us dessert, which, after the shakes, was not really wanted and would not survive our trip home. I just told him all I wanted was to make him aware of the situation in hopes that he would address it, so other diners would not have a similar experience, given the pricetag and compulsory service charge. Actually, ditch the compulsory service charge and move to normal tips. Makes it much easier for management to see if there is a problem with service and it gives the servers an incentive to do a good job. read more

Stopped here for a late lunch on Saturday afternoon. They don't take reservations, but get really busy so my recommendation is to go down and out your name on the wait list 30min before you want to eat, and shop in the boutiques to kill some time. We ordered the deviled eggs which were good- though pedestrian. Even with the different garnishes, just was a normal recipe to me. Would have been nice to have them jazzed up in some manner. I ordered the hot chicken sandwich which comes with jalapeño sauce. I added sweet potato fries but there wasn't syrup available to dip them in. If you dip yours in ketchup you need serious help. Good news is they are good on their own. The sandwich was good - I asked for mayonnaise to add to the top, as the jalapeño sauce soaked into the lettuce and bun. The breading was perfect on the chicken and well-seasoned, and the chicken was still juicy as well. For dessert I went solo and got the carrot cake- which the photo doesn't do justice. It was huge. I think the entire resort restaurants' cakes boast tall slices. Very good - and had to hammer down the last part of it so I didn't waste. I like this place - definitely a lunch spot. Located inside the main building of the Greenbriar resort. Traveling and wanted to show this beautiful resort to family. And hungry, so very hungry. We checked in here as soon as we arrived, and told a 40 minute wait. So we put our name in and wandered around the shops. Finally seated, and drinks and my Chilled Peach Soup came right away. Waitress was friendly and knew her stuff. That soup was what dreams are made of...little raspberry hearts and cream, and a tiny little macaroon. One of the best things I ever put in my mouth. Life is good. Then we waited...and waited. All the while listening to neighboring tables complain about how long the wait for food was. And it was l...oooo.....n...g. My soup held off my hunger pains, but didn't help the others. But lunch was good when it arrived. I had Chicken Salad and fruit, my sister had a burger (which she said she could have killed the cow and cooked in less time) and my niece had a Ruben. Two and a half hours later we were headed down the road again. Yes, you read that right. Two and a half hours. For lunch. Still...I have staying here on my bucket list for the near future. It's very large and has lots of toppings, so come hungry! However, our lunch was just okay. The Cobb salad was far lesser quality than the Cobb salad from the lobby bar and it required lots of cutting. I'd recommend a burger or sandwich over a salad for lunch or dinner. I absolutely loved the Kentucky Hot Brown and their strawberry ice cream. I was told that their ice cream is made in house. Word to the wise, their mint chip ice cream tastes like it is made with real mint. I love artificial mint flavor but I'm not a fan of the real deal. We got to Draper's right at 11am since they don't take reservations. There were five of us and we ordered burgers, chicken sandwich and chicken pot pie. We didn't get served our entrees until 12:13pm. Absolutely ridiculous! The restaurant was not even full. Not sure what's wrong but they need to fix it. I won't be going back on our next trip to the Greenbriar. And I don't recommend it to anyone who wants prompt service or a good meal. read more

One of the less expensive places to eat in the Greenbrier located just outside the casino on the lower level. My wife, boss and I popped in for dinner around 6pm on a Thursday night. There were only a handful of tables in use so getting our pick of a table was no problem. Our server showed up immediately to make sure everything was in order and to get our drinks. Service here was spot on as it is everywhere at the Greenbrier. All three of us were in the mood for a burger but chose differently from their extensive list of options. I upped it a notch with getting their burger/fries/shake combo as did my wife. My boss went with a beer from amongst a list of probably a dozen types. My burger was well prepared with Swiss cheese, cooked onions and hot peppers which proved to be too hot for me. The fries and shake were tasty but the latter didn't come with a sidecar of bonus ice cream like some places do. My wife's burger with cheddar and sweet potatoes was equally as good and enjoyed by her. The potions were just about right but maybe a little too much as we all left a little on our plates. We all came away full and happy after having a nice meal here. We would definitely return on a future visit to the resort. read more

This is the only place in the hotel that actually service is decent, our waitress Jessie was attentive and caring. Always came back to check on us and service was fast from the beginning. We decided to pop in on a Sunday afternoon before we went on the bunker tour. There was no wait which we loved and the decor was so fun. We didn't want to eat too heavy so we split the nachos and I had a chocolate milkshake. Once we ordered the food and drinks came out pretty fast. The milkshake had a great flavor but there were large chunks of ice cream still not mixed in which was disappointing. The nachos were very interesting, it was new to us to have a wonton chip but they were light and crisp, the bbq sauce however was not our favorite. It looked and tasted identical to ketchup. We spent the whole time trying to figure out if it was, we were sure it was. It was way too over powering and made it difficult to eat off the places it touched and all the cheese sauce was on the bottom of the plate so it was hard to get to. The pork on it was good and tender but that was about the best part and there was not that much of it. As much as I had wanted to give this more stars, 2.5 to 3 is the most I can do and not be lying about it. Went here the weekend before Thanksgiving with my mom, uncle and aunt, when I was in town to visit for the week. I hadn't been to Draper's in awhile, and probably won't for awhile now. Service was great. Had a waitress from England, who was an intern and was very sweet and attentive. The food was eh. The flavor wasn't great and the sauces on some of the dishes was overwhelming, as in it was drowned in sauce and needed about half the sauce that was on it. The prices were a bit high, even for the Greenbrier, for what you got, but then again it is the resort and you have to expect that I guess. Also worth noting, the food came out at different temperatures. My mother and aunts food came out steaming hot, while my uncle and mine came out luke warm. Kind of dissapointing considering the Greenbrier and it's great culinary school. Overall, decent experience, but could have been better. read more

Draper's is an exercise in quality, class, and aesthetics. When the most affordable restaurant at the Greenbrier still provides top-notch fare with excellent service, it really shows you just how well-planned the whole place is. Came here on my way back home from a medical school interview with a friend. We originally intended to dine at the Forum, though no reservation spots were available. I have never been so glad to have my original plans dashed: Draper's is excellent. The interior is beautifully and tastefully decorated courtesy of its namesake, Dorothy Draper. The service staff are sharply dressed and extremely courtesous, making numerous call-backs and anticipating your needs before you do. Of course, what is a restaurant without its food? My friend ordered the chicken pot pie, and the piece she generously shared was breathtakingly good. I envied her selection until I tried my burger with the apple-brie and bacon setup. I have had far more burgers in my life than any oncologist would recommend, yet I would say that this was easily in my top three burgers of all time, if not the best of all. It was gorgeously presented (as you can see from my photo below) and astoundingly flavorful from the first bite to the last. The fries were also excellent and well-seasoned. I knew coming here would be a positive experience, though I was just not prepared for how stellar things ended up being. What can I say of a negative nature about Draper's that can't be said of any excellent dining establishment? We waited a bit to be seated (about 25 minutes) and the meal was not cheap, though if you come to the Greenbrier you know that both of these are part of the experience. Due to distance it may be a while before I return, though I am already looking forward to that far-off trip. You need to experience this as well when life grants you the opportunity to do so. Overall: 5.0 stars ------------- Pros: - The food is peerless, my mouth still waters every time I think of the meal I enjoyed here. - Excellent and professional service, everything a dining experience ought to be. - Dorothy Draper had class, and the decorating she did conveyed that well. This place is every little girl's dream! Or at least mine. Florals, so much pink, painted angels and homemade ice cream towered higher than them! Located inside the uber eclectic Greenbrier Resort is this sweet retro ice cream shop named for the designer of the hotel, Dorothy Draper (not Don Draper, although it is very Mad Men-esque) who's 50's mixed matched Betsey Johnson meets Lily Pulitzer aesthetic is unmistakable, and really quite fun! The decor is of course carried throughout Draper's too. The diner/pop shop type place located near the casino of the hotel has cozy booths, and picture perfect counter, and serves up some all American classic comfort foods I hear are a tad overpriced.... but we came for the ice cream. So many choices they just couldn't decide on one. A huge banana split with all the traditional fixing it was. Mint chip, which they were warned was rather minty (they didn't mind...at all), strawberry and chocolate chip cookie dough. This thing was massive and actually priced reasonably for the size. They ate almost every bite! It was very memorable for them! Service was friendly, but on the slower side. From what I've heard I would maybe say skip the food and go right for dessert here! The decor is what you would expect from a place named after Dorothy Draper. Color & flowers everywhere! I was with a party of four at lunch time. I ordered soup and a burger. My butternut squash soup was super thin & not well seasoned. Everyone else's entrees arrived & mine did not. Turns out the server hit the wrong button & my order was not entered. I had to wait for my entree while everyone else ate. I was eating on a conference break - rushing to finish in time was not pleasant. The server laughed off his error & no effort was made to make up for ruining the meal experience. My burger and fries were average. The entree was hot & fresh but nothing spectacular. The soup was absolutely a disappointment. If you happen to be at the resort, this is not a bad option - especially with children. We really did look forward to Drapers. Sadly, the food was cafeteria quality at best. Even the ice cream was meh.

It's definitely not the cheapest game in town but the portions are huge, the dining is superb (I love the glass bottle mustard and ketchup they gave me for my burger, including the Heinz version of Grey Poupon mustard) and service was excellent. We definitely got a good experience coming here and decor lives up to the grand surroundings of the resort it's located in. This is one of those places where you want to dress up but you won't get tossed out on your behind if you're just wearing nice jeans and a T-shirt. It might be one of those "once in a lifetime" type experiences if you're of limited means but I didn't see pretension or the air of exclusivity while we were here and it was a nice lunch to have before going out in freezing, snowy weather. read more

Ridiculous. In fact no restaurant was good during our week long stay. What a shame especially in a food dessert. Located inside the Greenbriar Hotel, this restaurant is truly a hidden gem for those that don't know about it. I recommend the Ruben, the burger, or the Greenbrier club (which at the time of writing this review) includes both ham and turkey along with bacon and other condiments. Friendly waitstaff and classic Decour surround this beautiful restaurant that serves great food a drinks. If you want to go back in time with modern food and friendly staff - visit Drapers for sure!! Decent food at a semi-high price. I realize this is a high-end resort, but $21 for a basic burger and fries does not make it high-end food. This is, however, one of the cheaper dining establishments inside the Greenbrier. The service was ok, nothing like that in the main dining room. The decor is screams cotton candy pink. My water glass was left empty throughout the majority of my meal. While I waited to order (almost a 10 min wait) and waited on my food (another 10 mins) and waited on the check (another 10 mins) I watched the waitstaff. It seemed that families and those with children received the better service. On one other note, the dining area is extremely noisy. Don't plan on holding an intimate conversation with your dining companions. With decent food, an active atmosphere, and high prices, I give Drapers a solid 3 stars. It is a decent restaurant. The main thing I do not like about the newly moved and renovated Drapers, are the "chuckee-cheese-castle-world" type of booths they installed. It's not really the booths themselves, but the wierd little finial posts they placed on the backs of them. ugh. There are both men's and Ladies located on the same floor around the corner from Drapers, beside boutiques. The booths are comfortable and the tables placed along the railing that overlook the casino are a nice place to sit also. Service: Great. Efficient and good attitude Food: Very good. The Kate's Mountain fried chicken salad was ok, but I ate that before they moved. Recently, the friend green tomatoes were good, the crab sandwich was Great, and the chicken salad which I had put on a pretzel roll was fabulous.
