Maybe we had high expectations but we were greatly disappointed. We went to celebrate our anniversary and made a reservation for dinner. Based on the menu, pricing and website, we thought this was a higher end restaurant and dressed up a bit. We chose to sit on the patio because it was a nice evening. Unfortunately, the decor is similar to a beach side burger joint. Most people were dressed very casually in shorts and t-shirts, there were quite a few children and a dog. I love dogs but we quickly felt maybe this wasn't the place to celebrate a special occasion. We are not big appetizer eaters, but we did order the bread and butter. It was just ok. My husband had a beer and I ordered the white sangria. It was quite good but the presentation fizzled with a thick full slice of lemon plopped into the drink. I ordered the steak frites and my husband had the schnitzel. My steak might as well have been from Costco. It had no flavour and was not tender. It was placed on a large bed of what I believe was cooked collard greens...definitely disgusting and I feel a poor match with steak and fries. At Barberian prices, I felt my steak should have been amazing. My husband's meal was very tasty but the chicken was dry. We both made the mistake of ordering desserts, which were crap. My chocolate torte tart (with drunken cherries) came sliding around the plate with a few dry berries and no cherries. The waiter quickly got me a little tin dish of cherries, but it was hard not to be disappointed. The waiter explained that they are so short-staffed that bussers are helping with the prepping and that's why my cherries were missed. Don't waste your money on the these over-priced, grocery store type desserts. For two, our meal was almost $190. That was the two drinks, bread and butter, two mains, two desserts and tip. We walked away feeling hosed. The only positive of the entire meal was our waiter who was very experienced, efficient and polite. We understand these are difficult times for the service industry and we were more than patient, but it was just really disappointing to have a special occasion ruined by a "trendy" over-priced restaurant. Facilities are gorgeous and staff are super friendly, outgoing and helpful going for a five star at this point, very impressed. Dropping in for a late lunch and a beer after a round of golf, Snack menu was available. Staff were great and patient with one of my beer drinking buddies as he asked many questions about the beers offered. I went for the $22.00 burger with fries, thought the price was a bit steep, but it's the Drake it may be the best burger ever! Nope, very disappointed, on the small side and the beef was very dry and chewy. For the price I was expecting much more. Not even close to a Parts and Labour burger. An ok experience over the past Family Day long weekend. Our party was three families with two kids each for brunch. The first impression is what really soured this review for me. We had made reservations in advance only to be told by the not-too-friendly hostess that they for some reason couldn't accommodate our group. Was it because we had kids? I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised given the Drake's hipster rep. But c'mon, it's brunch. After the hostess could see we were visibly upset and weren't gonna take her explanation at face value, she said she would see what she could do. Surprise surprise she said they "were able to put a table together for us"...uh thanks even though we had made a reso? Rest of meal went quite smoothly, the rest of the serving staff were quite lovely and the food was good but honestly nothing to write home about. The best thing about the place was the location and the view. Won't be returning...just too much pretension for me...I didn't feel welcome from the start. Restaurant hospitality should start at the front door and when you feel like you're "not their type of customer" it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Wow! Where to start? We had two breakfasts and a dinner here and loved them all. First the dining space is spectacular- well designed, intimate space that provides stunning as far as you can see views of Lake Ontario. We had a Mexican themed brunch that was fresh, perfectly spiced with perfectly cooked eggs and corn tortilla. The other breakfast we had yogurt (super rich and refreshing) and granola with fruit. A healthy but decadent breakfast. The overnight oats are equally delightful. Coffee was perfect - rich fresh and hot. Now for dinner. Get a mixed drink. I'm a devoted G&T drinker and their take on it was refreshing but still true to the classic. Their red wine sangria was literally the best we've ever had. I had the Vichyssoise soup which was the one thing I didn't love. It was watermelon based and I found it a bit too syrupy sweet even with some chilli heat. We shared fries and chips and guacamole- nice sides The scallops and grits are great and unlike any typically scallop dish. Rich scallops with a silky, creamy rich creamed grits. The pasta w clams was equally tasty. Nice fresh pasta, robust tomato sauce and fresh clams. Dish could have probably used a few more clams. Nice wine list with good mix of PEC and other new and some old world wines. Finally what makes this place is the service. Friendly, mindful but generally unobtrusive. Very professional and well informed. Always got the sense that any of the staff was willing to help - and offered it. Great team. read more

Seven of us went to the Drake to celebrate a 75th birthday last Monday. Made a reservation several weeks in advance. Regardless, we were placed just off the main part of the restaurant beside a family with small children. Staff was friendly and service was acceptable but certainly not attentive. A bowl of soup ($15) had to be returned because it was barely lukewarm. My wife's 8 oz California Cab was $25 plus plus. I ordered the burger and fries. ($22). The burger had been pre cooked and overdone to the point it actually disintegrated. The fries were recooked I suppose because they were left over. Neither burger or fries were edible. Our bill was almost $200 for 1 beer, 1 glass of wine, 2 bowls of soup, 1 appetizer and 1 burger. No dessert. Outrageous for the quality presented. Will never return in spite of the great view. A shame as previous visits were very enjoyable. read more

It pains me to just offer just two stars because I really want the Drake Devonshire's restaurant to be five star given what the hotel offers to the county. The Drake Devonshire Hotel in PEC is really a gem - it's a really, really, lovely spot. However, my dinner there yesterday was terribly disappointing. The venue's strengths are, by far, the space itself, the service and the solid cocktail menu. My friend and I tried several of the crafted cocktails, and the white sangria, and they were by far the highlight of two stops at the hotel (cocktails on arrival, to refresh after the drive, and dinner at the end of the day). The highlight of the day iwas drinks at the Drake on the bleachers on the back deck, overlooking the beach. The combination of the sun, the water, the breeze, the wind chimes, the lovely people and the great staff makes the Drake a magical spot. I just wished dinner measured up as well. We ordered had the guac and chips, poblano caesar, scallop and grits, steak frites and salted caramel sundae. Of all that, only the french fries stood out as exceptional. The rest ranged from not bad to unfortunate. The steak was tender and cooked to spec. Coupled with the amazing fries and the side sauce, it was a nice option. Portion sizes are all generous. The scallop and grits was disappointing. The tiniest of scallops, buried in a bed of grits and indistinguishable veggies. There was a lot going on in the dish, but yet not a lot going on at all. The caesar salad was unremarkable, with avocado and corn. A solid caesar salad doesn't need avocado and corn, and needs a good dressing. The croutons were fresh and crunchy. The guac lacked seasoning and and extra pinch of cilantro and lime to give it the necessary bright, fresh, flavour. The chips seemed stale. The caramel ice cream: the ice cream itself was tasty, but you had to break through an armour of caramel to get to it, which made the dessert incredibly difficult to eat. I know caramel will harden in contact with cold ice cream, but I didn't expect the caramel to be absolutely solid. The caramel stayed in the bowl. Overall, I found it difficult to even make a selection from the menu as most of the options seemed needlessly fussy. Take the chocolate tart for example - seemed promising. Then you see there's rosemary elements, and black olive, and amaretto and then white chocolate. It just seemed like a lot for any palate. And it's not inexpensive, which isn't an issue if we had come away with a fantastic meal, but sadly, we did not. Come for the atmosphere, the view, the venue, the cocktails, the lovely staff and people and the unicorn shaped gummy candy available for purchase in the lobby. read more

Driving into the parking lot of this unassuming, almost nondescript cottage looking building, we weren't even sure we were at the right place. Once we stepped foot inside, we immediately recognized the stylistic yet quaint decor that is shared by Drake's main Toronto location. The restaurant itself is a gorgeous space with a stunning view of the lake tides riding up the stony shoreline. We were warmly welcomed, seated, and served quickly. The menu is not unlike its Toronto counterpart and the quality and presentation of the food well represents the Drake brand. The food was delicious, the coffee fresh and warming, and the atmosphere just a delight. Complete with wonderful and attentive service, it's no surprise that the Drake Devonshire has so quickly become the hottest spot in the county, with rooms fully booked through the next 6 months! Pros: Great service (server ensued my food sensitivities were accounted for), beautiful view of the lake, good pork chop. Cons: beef tar tar, charcuterie, swordfish were not great and quite expensive considering quality. Note: In Sept when the sun sets early, you lose the view at 7 pm. So, it may be better to visit for breakfast or lunch for the view. 2 drinks, 2 apps, 2 main courses : $140 before tip. There are plenty of better restaurants in the area, but if it's the view you want, it may be worth it. Just don't expect much in terms of food. read more

First things first, I want to say the food and view was excellent; but the other factors that often play into any of my reviews are the main culprit for the low rating. The Devonshire has a lot of things going for it; a great location, the name associated with the popular and hip boutique hotel " The Drake" in Toronto; plus a great vibe to go along with it. Honestly, it is too bad that staff and prices don't really live up to all the other factors. Quick note - their brunch (at least on Sunday) doesn't go until 4 pm as advertised on the website - so if you want the brunch variety, I would strongly suggest that you get there before 2pm. This was the tail end of our overnight in Prince Edward County and since we arrived at the midway point between lunch and dinner, we had arrived at a quiet hour. First snag - was that brunch wasn't being served, despite being advertised otherwise on the website. Second Snag - an extremely limited bar menu was being served during that service bridge period between brunch and dinner. Third Snag - some serious inattentive attitude from our server, left me more than a little less than impressed to the point. Case in point - water, almost, never refilled to the point, that when the server decided to grace us with their presence - we just asked them to leave the water pitcher at our table and we'll help ourselves. Also, we got some serious attitude, we asked for our separate bills, and tried to tell them how to split it out - the response was " Oh I know what you ordered" only to have the bills come and we had to send them back to get corrected. and last, but not least - the food was good but the portion sizes were smallish and totally not worth the price of admission. I most likely will not visit this place again, unless some serious improvements are made to the menu and service. It's really too bad - since I enjoy lakeside dining. read more

This is a beautiful spot for a meal, the dining room is basically all glass, giving you a wonderful view of the water. Service is friendly and helpful and the dining room itself has that rustic quality that's pretty trendy these days. That said, my meal was a bit lacking. I had the rabbit, which was on the dry/bland side. My dining companions all enjoyed their meals, though. There wasn't a ton of options for the dairy intolerant, so I couldn't pilfer anyone else's dinner, either. I might recommend this spot for a cocktail, some apps and a stroll around the water, but I don't think I would recommend dinner if you can't have dairy. read more

Christmas Market (5 Stars!) I went to the Christmas Market the past weekend. It was small but cozy. There were alpacas hanging out in the front of the Christmas Market and they were the cutest thing on earth! I got some dog food for my dog! There were also many accessories including earring and Christmas stockings for sale! Everyone there were amazing! Restaurant (I would give it 0 Starts just because of the service!) So my friends wanted to check out the lake view at the back of the restaurant. There were no signs of how to get to the patio (The door to the patio from the Christmas Market was blocked). We figured it out ourselves and walked through the restaurant. Just as we decided to get a table and do dinner before we head back to Toronto (it was 6pm). The door back into the restaurant was locked. No big deal, we got a waitress' attention to open the door. HOWEVER, the waitress was literally ONE FOOT AWAY FROM THE DOOR and refused to open the freaking door to let us back in. She said we needed to go around the building. We did, and WE HAD TO GO BEHIND SOMEONE BACKYARD ON UNPAVED ROAD IN THE DARK. I almost tripped. You should be glad I did not, because I would have seriously sued. You can guess the rest of the story. I left in anger and did not go back into the restaurant. Because you do not deserve a single penny of ours. read more

I don't know about staying here over night. Seems like there are plenty of places that are a third of the price and would be a lot nicer. However, the Drake is a great place to drop by for an afternoon drink and nibbling. The atmosphere is fun, the staff are super friendly, the food a little expensive but think of this as a treat, and the drinks cold. Sit and relax and enjoy a summer afternoon. My last visit at DDI was excellent. For the area, it's a great place to unwind, have a drink on the bleachers and have dinner with an excellent view. The menu is interesting. Playful, to heavy, to light. It almost seems confused, but it does work surprisingly. It's got something for everyone and it's heavily American and Italian influenced. For example, the grilled naan was an interesting mashup of pizza and bruschetta (playful). The ribs were as advertised - meaty and fell of the bone (heavy). The Ciopino was so perfectly executed, it was delicious even for a hot night (light). The only part of the menu that doesn't work is that the fish camp menu ends at 8pm. I can imagine a lot of people wanting to eat more seafood for dinner, so even just pushing that to 9pm would make a lot more sense for guests. Service and price wise, it's really high value. Can't wait to come back. I can sense they're getting some kinks figured out, but this is by far an excellent choice for the area. They've upped the game a bit for the up and coming region. read more

Dropped by for a late night snack after strolling around Prince Edward County vineyards. Food Shrimp cocktail - Decent portion and shrimp tasted fresh. Charcuterie board - Standard cured meat with pickled veggies. Beef tartare - Decent portion and crostini was fresh and crusty for a good crunch. The beef tartare was flavourful and chewy. Affogato - I recommend adding an extra scoop of ice cream! It made the dessert much smoother and enjoyable. Service We were attended quickly after being seated. Though it was late, service was very timely and our waitress was still very smiley and conversed with us. Ambience We got sat in the patio area which gives off a rustic cottage atmosphere. It was quiet given the time we visited. We wish there was some sort of mosquito repellent in the room as we were constantly feeling bug bites on our legs throughout the duration of our stay. I would recommend Drake for anyone visiting the PEC area as it's a nice settlement where you can enjoy a bottle of their local wine, amazing food selection and service. read more

Going to Prince Edward County, this place is like THE place that put the county on the map. It's tucked away off a side street that has this hipster controlling who can park in the lot and who cannot. Basically if you are staying the night, I think they'll let you in. Otherwise, street or in the closeby church parking lot. You walk in and it looks beautiful. You got your Drake store, someone at front desk that almost looks like they don't care (typical) but is probably really helpful when asked. The restaurant, is just beautiful. Has three walls of windows, one faces the lake. One side faces this really cool river that they put some great decorations over. And then there are these light fixtures outside the window that look like they came off a ship, really cool. The food, suckling pig ain't like your Chinese suckling pig. This summer the Fish camp offers fish fry which has delicious arrangement of fried seafood. The tostados are a bit small and the mussels and clams are deliciously good! They are reasonably attentive and come to pour water and make sure you're good. Definitely would come back! read more

Catfished. For the price of the meals here, you would never imagine cutting into your chicken to find that it is raw. Completely un-cooked chicken coming from an establishment like this is SO off-putting; I am astonished. I can't express how disappointed I am not only the kitchen staff, but also management. No acknowledgement from the cooks, and our server basically brushed off the multitude of the situation. Un-cooked chicken is what one wouldn't even expect from a hole in the wall diner. We visited x[oh!] while staying in Prince Edward County. It was recommended by a couple we ran into at the County Cider (another awesome place!) The location is amazing, the view breathtaking and the food delicious. While we had a bit if a mishap with one of the dishes, they were quick to rectify and to our pleasant surprise, discretely took it off our bill. That's what I call a wow moment! We came here on a Friday night for a pre-dinner drink since neither of us had seen anything we liked on the menu (and for the prices, wasn't willing to order anything just to sample). Trendy, cool decor. A lot of people were enjoying the ambiance and it wasn't bad but there wasn't anything that stood out. It was already really dark outside, so we didn't get to enjoy the view, which I think would have been a really nice close-up overlooking the lake, and maybe it would have swayed me to give more stars. The cocktails were good, sure. If I came back here, I would really only do it to check out the view (I hear they have a good brunch, but can't vouch for it myself). It's low on my list of places to check out in Wellington. read more

The place is way overpriced for what it is - we stayed at the owner's suite, which was roughly $1,200 a night, the view was spectacular, but the amenities and what was included was really sad. The staff made very little effort to make our stay feel special - when we checked in and asked for restaurant recommendations to grab a bite we were just told to try a place across the street (every other hotel I stayed at this price point would try to arrange for a reservation or offer options), these people were just like "we don't care, get out of here". We were new to the area and really wanted to experience the best of what the county had to offer, but had to rely on Yelp suggestions, since the hotel staff made us feel quite unwelcome. Luckily for us, we still found nice places to explore. The room was very poorly stocked - only one box of tissues, and no supplies that would be considered basic at any other place at this price point (slippers, Qtips for example). We had a number we could text and they were fairly responsive, but if you want to come to place where your basic needs would be anticipated, skip this hotel unless you want to ask/beg for anything you may need. The restaurant at the hotel was hit/miss experience as well. read more

The Drake hopes that pretentious folk from parts east and west will sit in their weird "living room" for 40 minutes (despite having a reservation for 40 mins earlier), then wait an additional 20 mins for a cocktail, and not be concerned about dinner at Hours after 10pm- all the while allowing their millennial staff treat patrons like they simply wandered in off the street looking for a $28 cheese-free charcuterie tray. My husband and I have visited wonderful eateries and fine restaurants all over Ontario and few have made my stomach turn like this experience . In the future we will channel our money into local wineries and family restaurants rather than give The Drake Devonshire one penny. I'd give less than one star if it had not been for the lovely PEC wine. read more

I've heard from friends the food is not that great and essentially you just go for the view, so I already had low expectations but even then to be honest, the food was really mediocre. Lavender Lemonade ($13) Lavender lemonade with vodka. They had me at lavender. Apparently this drink was created by the Drake bartender. I liked the color of the drink - love the purple lavender. I tasted no alcohol so that was a bummer - the drink just tasted lemonade with a hint of lavender flavor. Mushroom Benny ($15) Poached eggs served on Wild mushrooms, baby kale, and an english muffin topped with hollandaise sauce. Came with a side salad. I didn't like how the english muffin was really thick, the bread was too much compared to the other ingredients. The eggs were slightly over done, I prefer my eggs more runny. Smoked Brisket Hash ($18) House-smoked beef brisket served on top of potatoes and charred onion hash. It was actually topped with a poached egg - I wish there was hollandaise sauce too. The smoked beef brisket was dry - this dish needed some kind of sauce. The poached egg was slightly over done, wasn't really runny at all. Overpriced food that isn't average quality. If it wasn't for the killer view I wouldn't even give this place 2 stars. I would skip the food and just come for drinks to enjoy the view. read more

Was at the Drake Devonshire this past Saturday on a quick getaway to the County. The location of the restaurant is beautiful. When you first approach the place it doesn't look like much, but once you go through the hotel and walk into the restaurant and onto the patio, it's absolutely beautiful. The lake is right there while you eat your meal. And if you go there around sunset, the view is just gorgeous. Unfortunately, this is where my admiration for this place ends. We ordered the Beef Tartare, Lamb Torchetti, Prinzen Chicken and the Rabbit Stew. The beef tartare was the worst tartare I've ever had. Definitely too acidic tasting. They were also very stingy with the number of crostini they served with the tartare. We had to ask for more. The lamb wasn't moist which ruined what would have been a great dish otherwise. The chicken was okay but definitely nothing to write home about and a bit on the salty side. I didn't have the rabbit, but from what my brother in law, it wasn't bad. The waitress was nice enough but we got our mains almost 35-40 minutes after we got our Beef Tartare. This of course made us a bit agitated and took away from us being able to sit back and just enjoy the beautiful view. I would recommend this place for drinks on the patio for the view, but would recommend somewhere else to eat. read more

Well, the county is abuzz about the Drake Devonshire, and for good reason. After hearing great things from many different friends, we dropped in for Sunday brunch, without reservations a few weeks ago. They were happy to accommodate us, and we passed our brief wait for a table in the living room, which is a very cool front room that is adjacent to a glass cube room that houses a ping pong table. After were were seated for brunch, I ordered the Farmer's Brunch Platter and my BF ordered french toast. Coffee here is fantastic, and the food is really amazing. I would highly recommend opting for the Farmer's Brunch Platter if you are there for brunch. It's a little bit of everything, and the real highlight among the plate was a bit of pickled fennel. Woah. So good. Overall, a great experience, amazing atmosphere and the service really does give you a feel for the city but with the relaxed county atmosphere you expect out here. read more

They quit serving lunch at 2p so we ordered from the afternoon menus. We had the ceviche and burger w/o the bun. The burger was good but the ceviche was fabulous with big chunks of tuna! Came here with some girlfriends during our weekend roadtrip to Prince Edward County. For dinner, we ordered the warm pea salad, maple ribs and seafood ciopino. The food was good but it took over 45 minutes to arrive. On top of the long wait, the restaurant air conditioning didn't seem to doing it's job so we were all getting a little hangry sitting in a hazy, humid restaurant and waiting unacceptably long for our meals. When I asked the waitress about the air conditioning, she said it wasn't broken but rather, it was the air that came in every time someone walked in/out through the patio doors. It was a hot and humid summer day but that's no excuse. We could see other patrons fanning themselves while waiting for their food. Not a dining experience we were expecting at the Drake Devonshire Inn. The quality of the food redeemed the experience a bit. I would come back again for the food but would make sure not to come on a beautiful hot summer day :P read more

Service was poor and kitchen was very slow. Our group was in after the brunch rush and with a half empty dining room, wait was close to 20 minutes just for drinks. Server was unfamiliar with menu to assist with dietary restrictions and changed part of my meal without informing me. Don't expect options if you're vegan or lactose intolerant. Review for two nights at the hotel and two dinners at the restaurant. 5 stars all around. Hotel: - cozy, funky, great shower, nice bed, mini bar. - no Breakfast included but brewed coffee in the mornings - games room with ping pong - visited in the winter but the outdoor space looks fabulous Restaurant: - great menu as one would expect from the Drake. Could have easily ordered anything off the menu - all looked great and everything we had was awesome - fish, scallops, pot pie, burger, Brussel sprouts - amazing cocktails - brown butter maple old fashioned: to die for! - nice wine list with super reasonable bottles of house wine for mid $30 range - great service - one night was open mic - some very impressive talent, fun crowd Overall really enjoyed our stay here. Went for dinner - all in all, I would say it was "soulless". Service and ambiance were lovely, hard to beat being right on the water, but the food options and execution were a disappointing. Found it fairly overpriced, and have been told by an insider they bring in their waitstaff from Toronto as opposed to locally in PEC (which is a little heartbreaking to me!) Glasses of wine ~$12-$14 for a 5oz and would have wanted to see a wider selection of wines by the glass from PEC wineries to support the local businesses and offer a sampling of the region. Mains were fine, nothing special. I ordered the fagioli pasta, the pasta itself was good but the sauce was very salty. My dining partner had the arctic char which he said was just OK. I think if you come to Prince Edward County looking for a big city then it's fine, but if you're like me and adore the County as your quaint and quiet escape - venture elsewhere. read more
