The Skirrid Mountain Inn

The Skirrid Mountain Inn

One of the claimants to the title of Britian's oldest pub, a court is recorded as being held at the Millbrook Inn on the site in 1110, when two brothers were tried for theft and sheep stealing (one was hanged for his crime). The Priory was founded in 1108 and it is possible the pub was built to provide for pilgrims and other visitors. Manorial Courts were held here until 1485, with local courts thereafter. Hangings took place, so tradition has it, within the pub itself some 180 over the years. More of the pub's history can be found on the website. That all said, the exact age of the present structure is more debateable; most of the visible features are 17th century, although the main structure may be older. The pub today is happily unpretentious and has a rustic main room with bare stone walls, a huge stone fireplace and bar. There's a further small, cosy bar and two larger rooms, used for functions and at busy times. It serves a clutch of real ales, as well as food at lunchtimes and in the evenings. The food menu features traditional pub grub with decent portions, and there's an extensive choice of locally sourced meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, with starters and desserts, as well as sandwiches and filled baked potatoes at lunchtimes. Typical mains are around £6, up to £14 for steak. When we ate there were several families there with young children as well as couples of various ages, and in the summer it is popular with walkers and tourists.

It's a properly traditional pub, with low ceilings, old ornaments on the walls and a great tradiitonal menu. On summers days they also open up an outside area which serves burgers, bacon rolls and the like. The food here is always exemplary and well-priced and the staff are always super friendly. There's a lovely outdoor seating area which is a spacious, chilled out place to enjoy a sunny day. It's close proximity to Monknash beach also make it an ideal pit stop after a day by the seaside. I went in about two hours ago for a pint of Butty Bach, which is brewed in the Wye Valley. It's a fantastic, strong bitter and one I always have when visiting here. The odd celebrity has been spotted within these walls and it's not at all difficult to see why. In the local area, the Plough and Harrow is truly one of the finest traditional pubs.

Apparently, The Plough and Harrow was awarded the honour of being one of the ten best seaside pubs by The Guardian. It's not too hard to understand why. This is a traditional pub through and through. There's no loud music or slot machines to be found here. Instead there are open fires, delicious meaty aromas and that summery smell of spilt cider from the bar. The staff are exceptionally friendly and show a great amount of attention to detail. The food in The Plough and Harrow is delectable. Really. You know how everyone's favourite roast dinner is their own Mum's? Not anymore; the Plough wins out. So, in short, I agree with Gareth.

They've painted this a garish pink since many of the photos online were taken, which has the pub in a far more professional looking white. Let's start with the positive: inside, this place is really pretty. The layout allows for lots of little nooks and crannies, with the restaurant seating towards the back after a small but functional pub. Exposed brickwork and beams lend the venue a classy feel. The service was attentive and friendly and food came out quickly. Dishes seemed reasonably priced with a 10oz sirloin steak topping the menu at £18. Unfortunately, there's less positive news to report. Firstly, drinks are not offered as part of the table service. Neither are guests provided with a drinks menu or wine list (despite many being available behind the bar). Instead, guests are required to get up, go to the bar, order their own drinks and carry them to the table. That's despite our table being laid out with wine glasses (and glasses for water we were never offered or provided). The menu itself is extensive enough, however half way through our dinner we spotted a promotion for a dish that wasn't included. It turned out to be included on a specials list we weren't provided with but was scrawled on a specials board out of sight to more or less every table. Talking of the table, ours was sticky and needed a good wash. Once we ordered our starters we were actually asked if we would like clean cutlery for the next course. That's a first. The food itself was inadequate. Our steak was over cooked (medium rare was closer to well done) and the chicken coach tasted dry and I strongly suspected had been cooked from frozen. We left feeling this venue has bags of potential. It's appointed well but everything from our entrance went downhill (with the exception of a couple of delicious deserts). It needn't be that way. If they changed their silly drinks policy, provided a full menu, washed down the tables, gave a little more care to the food and generally extended the quality of the building to the experience of their guests, this would be at least a four star place to spend time.
