I love coming to Doc Martens and see what new shoes they have. My daughter needed a pair of non slip boots for work and her coworkers raved about the Doc Marten non slips. There is a tiny parking lot for store customers only, if you have anything larger than compact you might not be able to fit. We were greeted right away and my daughter was able to quickly find what she was looking for and we were helped by Morgan who helped us with hints to break into the boots faster. I'm a regular so most of the staff know me by name and greet me when I come in. At 76, no one bats an eye or thinks me too old, in fact, I usually talk customers there into buying something when I'm in the store since I've been a fashionista and shoe person my whole life! Opened a door labeled only exit. The manager proceeded to come over to me and yell at me for opening it declaring that it's the emergency exit. I asked her why there isn't any signage it's not a normal exit as labeled and she indicated by law they couldn't. Will not return. Very poor manger experience. read more

Standing by faulty product is just unethical. I've purchased DM's from this location since the beginning of 2012. I've worked at a cobbler's before as well. The quality of the more expensive "supposedly" better quality English Docs has gone down the tubes in the last decade for sure. My first pair lasted 3+ years. This pair lasted 6+ months. This, I should add, is the second pair of defective shoes I've been sold at this location. And while it was great that they made it right in the past before doesn't excuse the fact that they sold me defective product again and refused to make it right. Dr Marten's were originally intended as a non slip sole for the workplace that didn't sacrifice style and comfort for utility. They've completely lost their originally intended customer base. And if anyone has read the news regarding their profits falling due to there being too many variants of the original boot, this should come as no surprise. The manager offered to give me a 1-800 number to call and They said the return could be handled that way, however I clearly stated the defects became visible over a month before however, as I was working I didn't have the time to come in and address the issue. So why would they think I'd have the time to mail off the defects and wait an eternity for incoming work shoes that are essential? I recommend other consumers proceed with caution while shopping here. Honestly the only people I would recommend buying the 1460 "Vintage" Made in England boot would be people like me who grew up with them. Honestly they should remove the "Vintage" part from these new ones, there isn't anything vintage at all about them. My co-worker had a pair from ten years ago that she's worn for five years+, they look brand-new, no problems. While I'll unequivocally play Russian boot roulette in the future here I'll never be able to shake the feeling like I was lied to here and they could've made it right, but didn't. PS My coworker in five years never applied any weather proofing treatment or leather balm. There's no way that my boots cracked from weather because I applied an appropriate amount of weather proofing to them and have owned several pairs over the years not to mention my experience working at a Bloody Shoe Cobler's! read more

What a great store to shop at if you like the look of Dr Martens footwear and clothing. My wife ended up buying a lot of stuff here as she just loved everything. We had to fit it in the suitcases or I think she would have bought more. I did find a pair I liked but they only went up to a men's size 9 or 10 or something that was too small for me. I was shocked that you couldn't even order a larger size as they didn't make it. The girl did try to find me another style in my size, but I didn't like the feel as much. Who stops at those sizes? I bet if Shaq wanted a pair, they would make it. I wish I was Shaq. They had many cool displays which showed the different styles over the years and it was like a mini-museum/store you can shop at. It fits pretty well into Downtown Portland's vibe. My wife and I stopped in because my wife was wanting her first Docs, however we were completely ignored, and not one employee said even a "hello" to us and when we came in there were one or two employees standing around near register not helping others. it's unclear if we were ignored because we are transgendered or if it was because we were wearing walking clothes. I didn't have a plan to buy a pair of boots, but the customer service was so good, their displays are amazing, and when we came into the store we were immediately greeted by multiple employees and by the awesome pride decor/displays (this was early June 2022). Ray in particular really made an impression on me with their thoroughness, detailed knowledge of how different shoe styles fit, and they respected the budget I had for boots. Doc Martens are really great shoes that last for years. I came in to this store with my husband, searching for some casual shoes that could work for business wear. After wandering around the store for a bit, Ryan approached me and offered to help. I laid eyes on these dark cherry loafers and fell in love. Ryan got a couple sizes for me out of the back and I was sold after trying them on for fit. Ryan was very helpful, not pushy and happy to help out in any way. This store is small but laid out well with also having accessories such as bags, backpacks, leather cleaner, key chains and more. I interacted with another sales clerk after making my purchase and they were also friendly. I overheard another sales person answering some questions about places to go at night for fun from some customers. This is great customer service, giving information and service above what your "job" is. This is probably the largest Dr. Martens location I've ever been to, and they have a HUGE selection of shoes...honestly, probably all of the shoes in their collection. I spent a good amount of time taking my time browsing thru all of the different racks and displays of shoes. I came on a Sunday afternoon and they were pretty packed. I'm docking 1 star only because I felt like it took probably a good 15-20 minutes for any of the sales associates to acknowledge me and ask if I needed assistance. Once I did, the two people that helped me were very helpful and helped me decide on a shoe -- the Rometty boots that I am absolutely OBSESSED WITH! When you check out, make sure to sign up via text in order to get 10% off (I think)! Also, since it's Portland, NO SALES TAX! I ended up getting for so much cheaper than I would have had to pay in Los Angeles! read more

I'm going to assume everyone in the store was having a in unison terrible day, but the customer service here lacks tremendously. When I walked in no one acknowledge my existence (was the only one in the store), associates didn't bother to ask if I needed help, needed a size-nada. Perhaps the careless/ mopey energy is the culture here? This is very unfortunate especially when you're spending $200 on a pair of shoes. The employees here at this location are awful! My family was visiting Portland, and at the entrance of the store, my brother was trying to put the mask on him and his five-year-old daughter. He literally got yelled at in front of the store by an employee in front of everyone saying that his mask needs to be on outside the store versus the entry of the store. So embarrassing and unnecessary. Then they got a little busy, the employees were freaking out that the fire marshal was going to come in and they were trying to kick people back out. I was just harassed by the entire staff at the store for not wanting to put hand sanitizer on my hands. My skin is sensitive and hand sanitizer goes into our body through our skin and contains many harmful chemicals. I was exercising my bodily autonomy and even told the staff that I would refrain from touching anything. I was given attitude by everyone there, told I could follow the rules or leave the store but in a way that made me feel very unwelcome. I had to ask one of the members to step away from me he made me feel so uncomfortable. This was one of the most disturbing customer service experiences I have experienced. This Doc Martens shoe store is one of the smaller ones I've been to, but it has the usual amazing staff, funky and incredibly well-made shoes and boots, and overall fun "vibe". I love how the guys who work here welcome you to the store but let you browse and check things out and they don't hover or, god forbid, pressure you to buy anything. Sometimes we just enjoy checking out unique and fun shoe designs and artwork. Doc Marten stores are like miniature shoe galleries, as many of their shoes truly ARE works of art. That said, these shoes last forever. I bough a pair of DM pewter patent shoes about a decade ago. They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned in my life and they still fit and feel like new. I love them! This store also had some really terrific-looking canvas shoes and high-tops (like sneakers but better looking). If I had had more time, I'd have tried them on, they were so cool looking. I may go to our downtown Seattle store to try them; I really liked them, and I'd never seen DMs like these. This store also has some cool leather bags, belts, and fun socks. read more

Allison was soooo helpful. I had been waiting for months to order my Made in England Docs. They were sold out before Christmas and were supposed to get a new shipment in and so the story goes. They finally had them on the website and they didnt have half sizes and it had been a decade since I have bought a new pair of docs. I usually wear a 9 1/2 so I ordered a 10. THEY WERE WAY TOO BIG!!!! - First lesson, Docs run big. I was so stoked when they got here overnight but so disappointed when they didnt fit. They were so gorgeous and soft - The Abandon in Tan. I had ordered the shoes from the website since there are no doc stores in central Oregon where I live. So.... I called the store on the return address - the Portland Doc Martens store - and thank your preferred end of this phrase, maybe heavens, that Allison WAS so Awesome! She facilitated an easy exchange for me. Thankfully they had a pair of the boots I wanted - THE LAST PAIR IN A women's 9!!!! Allison was friendly, easy to talk to, helpful and TOTALLY sympathetic. She had to put me on hold a couple of times but never for very long. She was always available and continually communicating with me. She had great energy and was fun to talk to. She was able to waive the shipping for me so I only had to pay it twice (once for the too big boots and once to send them back back) and provided me the info I needed to return the boots that are too large. She also hooked me up with some boot balm which I wouldn't have ordered otherwise! - Good looking out Allison!!! My only complaints are (1) that I had to pay so much shipping which I get I wouldn't have to pay if I lived somewhere a little more urban BUT paying shipping in and out for a return when you already paid $10 for shipping and $205 for a pair of boots AND are getting a second pair is a little excessive but at least Allison waived the shipping on the second pair. (2) that they couldn't completely do the exchange long distance from the Portland store. I TOTALLY get it and if I had been in Portland I could have exchanged them BUT this does make it a little inconvenient for returns. Okay sure, dont buy them online but then I have to drive six total hours to get them. :| That's a lot of wasted fossil fuels for one pair of boots that I already had to get from England! and finally, (3) Come on Docs, I get that you want to be competitive in an increasingly interdependent global economy but selling out your production to Thailand and then restricting the US Market (I am sure this is at least partially a function of US protectionism) to only certain pairs, really?! It was a HUGE pain in the ass to get these boots AND it took months. Relatively speaking the Thai ones are crap. I get it, they are way cheaper but that's because they are crap. So, how about we think about refocusing the brand away from mass produced by cheap labor, in poor working environments, and back toward, made by hand with only premium materials by professionals, possibly with union protections and certainly health benefits, making a fair wage, in a far more livable atmosphere. In conclusion - Allison was AWESOME for handling my return. If you are ever in Portland and in the market for a pair of Doc Martens, she is your girl BUT Doc Martens Corporate - you should think carefully about your brand and how it is perceived. I'm a long time Doc-lover, have worn them for decades, since they were only made in England and that is why I will NEVER own a pair made anywhere else. Like most people, I hardly do any of my fashion shopping in person anymore. Amazon is a beast and I am lazy, what can I say? These days, the only stores I usually visit in person are the likes of H&M and Forever 21 - which we all know are fucking horrible places to be - but I digress. I've been wanting a pair of chunky heel chelsea boots, and because I've got some short stubby legs and big calves, I usually need to try boots on to make sure 1) I don't look like I have cankles 2) they actually fit, which is how I ended up at the Dr. Marten store across from my work. I was immediately greeted by Atticus, who was super friendly and extremely helpful. I went in thinking I would for sure buy the cadence boots, but found they were a little tight around my thick ass ankles and the heel wasn't quite high enough to give my leg the illusion of length I was looking for. Atticus quickly made a few other suggestions and brought out my regular size along with a half size down in each of the shoes I was interested in. He never pressured me (even though he totally could've just gone for an easy up-sell because the other boots I looked at were more expensive than the cadence ones) and he gave me plenty of time to decide on my own. After consulting my friends via Instagram and walking around the store in two different shoes a few times, I finally decided on the hoxton boots and I am in love. Since Atticus was chatting with a new customer by the time I finally decided, another employee (I believe the manager) spotted me and rang me up. He made sure I bought the wax to protect my new boots instead of the spray, which would've dried out the leather (I would've never known!) All in all, it was a super positive experience and I am over the moon in my new shoes. read more

I came to Portland unprepared for a rainy Thanksgiving weekend. The only casual boots I brought with me for walking around my entire trip were drenched on my first night. On day 2, I made it a point to find a pair of shoes that can withstand the rest of my trip. While my family was waiting for a table at Deschutes brewery, I found that Doc Martens was just a couple of blocks away. I went into Doc Martens on Black Friday, so of course the store was busy as hell. However, I had no problems asking for assistance from any sales associate. Doc Martens historically has its roots in the punk rock scene, so I already had this predisposition that I wouldn't find anything that was my style. Boy was I wrong! There were so many types of shoes that totally fit my personal fashion style. I fell absolutely in love with a pair of black Shoreditch boots that basically look like high tops. They're also made with greasy lamper leather, which was perfect for the weather. The quality and stitching of the shoes were excellent. I had no doubts that water could seep into any nook and cranny. I've been dreaming of Dr. Martens for years, and finally decided to spend the money. I knew I wanted a lace up black boot, but had no idea how many types of leather and different variations of the 1460 there are. Charlie helped me decide on the Pascal with the Wanama leather. Customer service was amazing, they unwrapped so many styles and sizes for me so I could make the right choice. Charlie also explained how the boot should fit and how to take care of the leather. I had a great experience and I'm in love with my new boots. $160 is more than I usually spend on shoes, but these will last me 10+ years I'm sure. And the style has been around for 60 years so I know they will always be on trend. read more

I can honestly say that I had never been in a Doc Martens store. Or maybe I just don't remember ever going to one. I was just here to dream. I have never owned a pair of Docs, but I've always wanted to. I just can never see spending that much for a pair of kickers like them. I still admire the hell out of them though. I never realized there were so many styles of Docs. I knew about all the various colors, but not the patterned ones.They even have kids pairs, toddlers pairs and dress shoes. Never knew that. I did find a pair of boots that if I should ever have the cash to get them, I will. Black on black houndstooth pattern. Frickin' sweet. They even still have steel toe boots. I had thought they discontinued those years ago. Guess I was wrong. The dress shoes for men were actually on par with what you'd normally pay for a decent pair of dress shoes. It's 32° with snow on the ground. I waited for 45+ minutes to even get inside the store, where I was told that the line was due to only having two employees working. Okay, so y'all need a 1:1 employee to customer ratio? For why? The "available" associate proceeded to ignore me while chatting with the "manager on duty" who was standing next to the front door doing nothing. I shouldn't have to come find you to help me if you're assigning one employee per customer. Is it a theft issue? If so, you should hire security.
