Because the procedure was expensive and not covered by my dental insurance, I decided to do more research and get additional opinions. I found Dr. Andrew Lum online, and was impressed by his credentials and very friendly office assistant, so I scheduled a visit in mid July 2026. Dr. Lum performed a periodontal evaluation and gave me a treatment plan that included two osseous surgery procedures. His diagnosis and recommended treatment were consistent with the other periodontists I visited, which gave me confidence that the treatment recommendation was reasonable. The main difference was cost. Among the three periodontists I consulted, Dr Lum office's quote was the most reasonable, is consistent with the bay area average cost for this particular treatment. I asked whether there was any flexibility in pricing, and the office did offer a discount, that help me a lot more. Overall, I appreciated Dr. Lum evaluation and explanation. My lesson from this experience is that patients should consider getting more than one opinion and comparing costs, especially for procedures that are not covered by insurance. Each evaluation cost about $150-$195, but I think it was worth it. Dr Lum has performed many surgery procedure like the one I needed. In addition, his office assistant is extremely helpful, timely, and respectful. I am looking forward to have Dr Lum to do the treatment for me. I will update the experience after the surgery.

Well 4 weeks went by and no check and I called and left voice mails and no one ever got back to me. I called again and got a hold of someone and they said the manger would call me back and she did and I missed it. She called again the next day and I picked up and right away she was defensive saying that I was wrong and that I actually underpaid?? Which makes no sense because wouldn't they bill me for that or not have perform the surgery at all. I was trying to explain to her how she had already left me a voicemail stating they would refund me and I have all the paperwork, she said because of insurance I actually paid the right amount but right before said I didn't pay the right amount so how is that even possible and they gave me two different quotes for two different things. They did not perform the surgery they said they did so I do have to follow up with my own insurance to make sure they have not submitted a false claim. I wish she would have handled the situation better because she was extremely rude and agitated on the phone. Kindness and patience goes a long way especially for a manager and explaining the situation in a better manner would have prevented my review. I still have to go in there and do this this in person but Im honestly not looking forward to it because of her attitude and way of dealing with things. Everyone just make sure you are clear with billing and your insurance before going in there. Also it looks like this is an on going problem with them if you look at all their bad reviews they all have to do with billing.

As a result, I had a relatively large cavity in between my two front teeth for over 2 years and it was sensitive and bothersome whenever air would hit them. My dentist kept telling me it was fine and she didn't know why it was sensitive. I mistakenly took her word for it, until it started to get increasingly painful. I went into Dr. Chung's office for a consultation about this and he reassured me there was in fact a cavity there. I was concerned given it was visible to me in the mirror and the extent of the pain. He took me in a few days later, cleaned it out, and took his time carefully drilling the cavity and installing a new filling. I'm happy to say my sensitivity is not only 100% gone, my tooth looks like there was never a cavity to begin with. He made the composite filling smooth and matched the color of my teeth. I am beyond impressed by his work and timeliness, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said everyone in the office is very nice and their cleaning is excellent. My dad is very critical and when he told me this I decided to book myself an appt. I went in and experienced the same experience my dad did. Everyone from the front office to the back office were friendly. Christy took my X-rays and she made me laugh and engaged with me as if we knew each other for a long time. Dr Cheng reviewed my X-rays and he is wonderful. Very down to earth and excellent attitude towards patients. He answered all my questions. I can't forget to mention Diana who helped me from the beginning to set up my appt. She uses text to communicate with me and I love it! I didn't know how to see if I still had coverage after I retired and she said she can call for me. She gave me the run down on my plan and she also booked my appt. Dana the dental hygienist is one of 3 in the office. She did an excellent job cleaning my teeth. I received no follow-up until the day before my appointment, so I called to reconfirm. I was reassured that I had nothing to worry about -- that my general cleaning and check-up would be fully covered by insurance. On the day of my visit, right before the x-ray, I asked again if there would be any out-of-pocket cost. They had me wait about 20 minutes in the x-ray room before returning to confirm that it would be 100% covered. Based on that assurance, I went ahead with the procedure. Two weeks later, I received a bill for the x-ray...!! When I called to ask about it, I was told it was ultimately my responsibility to understand my insurance coverage. But as a patient, there's no way for me to distinguish between a "basic" or "preventive" x-ray -- and I relied on the office's guidance. To make matters worse, the bill they sent had my name spelled incorrectly. That kind of error, along with the misinformation, does not inspire confidence. I also wonder why a non-preventive x-ray was even billed during a routine cleaning appointment. If this was just a standard check-up, why was the x-ray categorized in a way that isn't considered preventive and therefore not fully covered? It's not about the amount of the bill -- it's about the lack of reassurance, accountability, and transparency. Miriam's lack of organization, poor time management, and unprofessional demeanor completely changed what should have been a simple appointment into an unpleasant experience. An appointment was apparently lost or mishandled, and instead of trying to resolve the problem professionally, the interaction was made worse by the tone of voice and attitude I encountered. Customer service is often the first impression people have of a business, and unfortunately, that impression was disappointing. Patients expect courtesy, efficiency, and respect, especially when they are taking time out of their day for a medical appointment. In this case, I experienced the opposite. The dentists may provide excellent care, but the front office needs significant improvement when it comes to communication, accountability, and professionalism. Sadly, this experience was enough for me to take my business elsewhere.
