I went to Dr Klapper several years ago re: TMJ problem. Although he did a good diagnostic, his front desk person tried to charge me money, even though my insurance paid for it. I never heard from the office after months, and I called to find out when my appliance would be made, and my call was never returned. I think this is an unprofessional, scam operation to get insurance money and give no product or an inferior one! Someone should report him to the Orthodontist Society!! Stay away! read more

I was treated initially for severe TMJ by Dr. Klapper & his treatment worked. I re-injured my jaw about a year later & sought his help again. My dogs had chewed the first splint I had and I hoped to get a break on the cost to replace it as I was a returning patient. I was shown a plastic baggie containing several chewed splints and he quipped, "This is what happens to splints that are left out." I purchased another splint. The splint didn't fit properly and I went back twice to have it modified. When I insisted it felt too tight Dr. Klapper's demeanor became irritated and impatient. I never returned. My TMJ is flaring up again and I sought out a different orthodontist. If bedside manner means nothing to you, then Dr. Klapper is your guy. If it IS, keep looking. read more

I have had a great experience with Dr. Klapper. I had a terrible TMJ problem which could not be corrected with just an appliance. After jaw surgery and three years of braces, I am pain free and the misalignment of my teeth has been corrected. Dr. Klapper always treated me with respect and demonstrated that he really cared about how I felt and the progress we were making. On occasion, when things were too painful, or those times that I just did not feel well, he was always open to making adjustments or trying a different approach. Dr. Klapper is semi-retired, so he has limited availability, but he and his office manager, always returned calls and were caring and helpful. People ask me if I would do this all over again, given the 3+ year process required to fix up my jaw and teeth.. I always answer yes. I found Dr. Klapper online once hoping that he would be the cure to my TMJ issues. After months of being in pain I finally saw him and he promoted his innovative treatment that involved spending $1,500. I was promised a cure to all of my problems in less than a month. After a month went by and nothing happened I was still in moderate pain, Dr. Klapper failed to explain to me why it wasn't working. In fact his helping attitude changed to one that was impatient. After 3 months of his failed therapy I stopped and decided to look elsewhere. If anyone who reads this has had a failed treatment with him, please do not give up and do not listen to only one doctor's theories on how to cure tmj. The real problem behind my tmj was a problem with occlusion and Dr. Klapper never ever checked it. I went to Dr. Klapper for my TMJ. I was told I have TMJ by my oral surgeon and dentist. Hoping Dr. Klapper would help me, he not only gave me a wrong diagnosis but he is very unprofessional. When I arrived to his office he had another patient in his room with the door wide open so people in the waiting area can hear and see everything. When I went in the room with him he kept the door open as well. I found that very rude and unprofessional and invasion of my privacy. Dr. Klapper told me I do not have TMJ and weeks after seeing him I am still in pain and saw 2 more doctors who told me I have TMJ. Seeing Dr. Klapper was a waste of time and money! We went to Dr. Klapper on a referral from our child's primary care dentist. BEWARE this office says they take Blue Cross Blue Shield, but they do not follow the BCBS negotiated prices. They require payment up front, and tell you that you will receive a check in the mail for what the insurance pays. It turned out they were out of network, but Gayle did not tell us this. She knew they did not take our BCBS PPO but she took our insurance card to pretend she was going to submit to insurance. She never said, "Hey we are outside of your network and you are going to have to pay the amount in full." So we paid $250 up front and when I received the statement of benefits it said the patient responsibility was $180, meaning we should get a check for $70 back from Klapper's office because of the BCBS negotiated price. But when we called Gayle said, "We are out of your network so we can charge whatever we want and you are responsible for the amount in full until you meet your $500 out of network deductable." The whole thing just seemed shady. Every other doctor we go to makes sure our insurance will cover the service and if not, they will tell you. Dr. Klapper may or may not be a good doctor, but his office manager, Gayle is shady and beware the up-front payment as you may not ever get any money back! read more

If I could give zero or negative stars I would. I should have read the reviews before visiting, don't make my mistake. DO NOT go to Dr. Klapper. I have never met such a nonchalant and uninterested physician. Last year I was sent to Dr. Klapper by my neurologist, as he suspected my headaches were from TMJ. They didn't tell me until after the consultation that that alone was $250, which is outrageous. I thought the consultation went well and that he understood what I needed and how to help me, and now I know it's just because he pushes the ONE product he uses, which is a ridiculously expensive mouthguard that is supposed to be innovative and the best there is. Me being a young 20-something just trying to deal with the pain, I accepted and set up a payment plan for the $1,500 mouthguard since they don't take like any insurance. That should have been my red flag and stopped me. When I received the device, he was good about making sure it fit me correctly, even though he seemed disinterested and annoyed that he had to keep filing it down. Fast forward to a month later and the cheaply made piece of plastic was disintegrating. When I called to ask about this, he dismissed my concerns and didn't care that it was stabbing me in the gum, said that it happens. I'm sorry but for $1,500 that thing should last a lifetime! Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I received a bill out of the blue, after no communication or calls or anything for over a year, saying I still owe $500. How is that possible when I authorized them to charge my credit card every month for a set amount of time until the device was paid off? I have now had to call them FOUR TIMES to try to get it figured out. When I called yesterday he was rude and very dismissive again, telling me I needed to call back on a Saturday as that is the only day his receptionist is in. Who only has a receptionist on a Saturday? I also shouldn't have to be the one reaching out to them when they have messed up the billing, this is their responsibility. I'm not the only one this is happening to, as he thought I was someone else when I called and asked if I had mailed in my receipts. (which is extremely unprofessional, he never even asked my name or what I was calling specifically about, and instead of taking a note he told me to call back and he would let it go to voicemail) Dr. Klapper needs to retire and everyone needs to stay away from him. He does not know how to run a business and does not care about his patients, only about the money. read more

I'm starting to wonder the same thing. Our story is similar to the last one. I have a bill that does not even reflect the $250.00 we initially paid and we received a bill for 1950.00 for an "apparatus" for which I can tell you has done a whole lotta nothing for my daughter's TMJ. They said they accept BCBS PPO and also work with Tricare. We were assured that the treatment and apparatus are usually covered by them. I don't see ANYWHERE on this bill that they've even billed the insurance company. I don't have anything from my insurance either. I also called and talked directly with Dr. Klapper and he said the office was closed and to call back in 2 weeks and talk to the office lady. He said they do bill the insurance but the agreement is between him and the person and he doesn't work directly with insurance. This is not what was verbally stated to me in the beginning. It also raises the issue that if I pay this bill, they then bill our insurance....Is he then getting double payment from us and the insurance. I found Dr. Klapper on the internet as I was having issues with grinding my teeth at night. He told me that a very expensive night guard / mouth piece would be my cure all. I believe the guard cost well over $1,000.00. Within a few months, the cure all night guard that he fitted me with broke through no fault of my own (I only wore it at night and then left it in its case during the day). Frustrated at this point because my grinding was not getting better, I had spent a good amount of money and the cure all guard had now broken, I went back to Dr Klapper for a follow up to have him either repair the broken guard or get me a new one that would not break. He then had the gall to try and charge me again. Needless to say, I have left the practice altogether, found another physician who cares more about my symptoms (and me) and less about the $$$$. My grinding issues have been successfully addressed with my new physician. There are plenty of other viable options on the north shore than this physician. I'd consider all of them before this one. read more
