The real star of the show here is their homemade waffle cones. Seriously, do not skip them-they are made fresh, perfectly crisp, buttery, and honestly make whatever flavor scoop you get taste ten times better. The only minor hiccup? The ordering process can feel a little high-stakes. Sometimes the staff will stand right there, unblinking, staring you down while you're frozen in indecision trying to pick your flavor. It's not aggressively rude or anything, but let's just say it definitely adds some friendly pressure when you're trying to choose between thirteen or so different options! Once you get past the pressure and secure your cone, though, it's smooth sailing. Incredible treats, great location, and those homemade cones alone are worth every single penny. Just maybe look over the flavor list before you step up to the window! read more

Downtown Scoops - My son enjoying Superman with loaded sprinkles- the best combo! - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Alpena, Michigan

I walked in into this place with my daughters and the young staff did not acknowledge us. Ownership should train the young staff to say Hi or Welcome, or would you like a sample? The staff acted like they didn't want to be there. The ice cream was good. My bill came out to $9.01 and I had a 10 dollar bill. The cashier could have easily pulled one of the many pennies out of the tip jar but no she gave me 99 cents back instead of a dollar bill. If the service was great I would have given them that dollar plus a lot more. The moral of the story is work in a factory if you don't want to deal with the public. read more

Very rich ice cream but honestly that's what you want any way, right? Right in downtown and a perfect spot to grab a cone and walk around window shopping. read more

A favorite indulgence when we travel is ice cream. Yelp did not steer us wrong when it directed us to Downtown Scoops in Alpena. We were greeted with a friendly smile as we entered and perused the many creative flavors of ice cream that we were told come from Michigan dairies. After two samples, I decided on Bear Claw, dark chocolate with caramel and cashews in a shop made waffle cone. Other reviews were spot on that one scoop is very generous! Hubby had Amaretto Moose Tracks with hot fudge. Both were yummy. Shop was clean and eclectic and the only thing missing was a restroom. Glad we stopped! read more

High quality delicious local ice cream. Thank you for making the boston cooler the right way; Vernors and real ice cream! The waffle cone was fresh and crunchy. This is the place for a treat! read more

We were in Alpena last week, and I remembered there was an amazing ice cream shop downtown. Thanks to Yelp I found it again! The single scoop is more like two scoops at many ice cream parlors. The flavor selection is wonderful. Service with a smile, too. I docked them one star for not having a public restroom. That's a pretty big failing for a place that serves lots of children and tourists. We had been on the road for over an hour and by the time I finished the ice cream Nature was calling me loudly. It was good to find a coffee shop on the next block. read more

We stopped in and asked about their policy on how they handle peanut allergies. Staff has ingredient information and opened a new tub of ice cream for us. Staff wore gloves and throughly washed an ice cream scoop before dishing out from the new tub. My husband and I were impressed with all the staff, they worked hard yet efficiently and were friendly to everyone. This shop is an asset to the Alpena community. read more

Many tasty choices for ice cream. I like the Traverse City cherry and they didn't disappoint. Fun little gift shop too.

Stopped in on a Friday evening after dinner down the street. Line was long but went fast. They have quick service and great ice cream. Since it was the end of a long day and there were lots of people downtown the flavor choice were limited but still something I enjoyed. Waffle cones are excellent. Good number of toppings to choose from for sundaes. Smiling faces to serve you. I will go again! read more

Clean and nice place. Staff was great. Cleared up all questions with ease and they even had an option for sugar-free eaters such as my Grandma (It was some sort of apple ice cream which she said was delicious). Liberal amounts of ice cream that I would say is fair for the price. Would definitely visit again. I had the Blue Moon single scoop ice cream in a waffle cone. Tasted delicious and fresh. No hint of chemicals or anything like that at all. I do not know if they make these hand-made, but it sure tasted like it! read more

Visiting downtown Alpena is always a treat, grabbing some ice cream at Downtown scoops is the icing on the cake! Friendly service with lots of Michigan flavor favorites and even some new gems to try! Service is pretty quick and prices that won't break the bank. They have plenty of items to put on your ice cream, sundaes or floats. They have some vegan options and other frozen items that aren't just ice cream too. They have it all! Vernors too ladies and gentlemen. They also have a lot of northern sodas to purchase as well. Michigan and Up North merchandise, T-shirts, cups, post cards, stickers and other desserts. High top tables are available to sit and a kid table to color on. If seating isn't available you can walk around downtown or enjoy a seat by the fountain kiddy corner. You have to get their waffle cones, they are exceptional. read more

Sweet corner location in downtown Alpena. The owner was scooping the ice cream when I was in. The cherry amaretto ice cream was delicious. Excellent flavor choices and the owner had great recommendations for area dining. Definitely will go again when in the area. read more

Not just a place to grab amazing ice cream creations! Scoops offer a wide variety of "Michigan made" treats that will have you coming back to try something different every time. We had Mixers that blew away any blizzard I've ever had. But not only was the ice cream amazing I bought a jar of Peach habanero jelly and a bag of the most delicious Carmel corn I've ever had! Awesome atmosphere and friendly staff! read more

Great selection. Delicious waffle cone. Tables outside to enjoy the downtown atmosphere.

Wowza was this place delicioso. Handmade ice cream with a plethora of flavor options. The pricing was very favorable for such a great product. Also, the people that here are very honest. I left the ice cream shop with my expensive sunglasses on the table I ate at. They are worth approximately $250. I assumed that they would have been gone when I went the next day to see if they were turned into lost and found. The staff saved them for me. Definitely did not expect that. Thank you for your honesty Scoops! I'll be back when I return next year! read more

Look, it not HUGE, but this place has all of the major flavors you could want. The quality of the ice cream is right there will Cold Stone, but WAY cheaper. We got 2x1 scoop waffle cones for $6. I saw a lot of folks getting soft serve too, so maybe we will get that next time. If it's hot, or you are just walking by, I suggest checking this place out. Beats the lines and quality at Dairy Queen any day. read more

I love scoops I've been going here for years. Today I ordered a chocolate shake and this boy made it with vanilla ice cream. You literally work at an ice cream store, and chocolate is in the name. How are you that dumb. Anyways, I'll obviously come back. I love the ice cream but seriously. read more

We stopped in here late one summer night and wow were we surprised! Only three bucks for two small ice creams. Unheard of! I had the soft serve and my buddy had the hard flavors. Perfect size and not too small. It was great! Will be back for sure. read more

Very rich and indulgent ice cream. I had a sundae that kind of blew my mind, it was so good. Bear Claw was a deep chocolate flavor with fudgy cakelike chunks and cashew nuts throughout. Their standard scoop is 6 oz which is pretty big, and affordably priced. The smell of waffle cones greets you at the door and my husband couldn't resist, and the cone did not disappoint. I noticed some fun novelty flavors like Eskimo Kisses (chocolate and coconut) and Superman ice cream. They have a few better quality Michigan souvenirs for sale too, but not so many that it overwhelms the ice cream shop. Nicely restored downtown location with tin ceilings and old fashioned style. There was just one woman working but she served everyone quickly. read more

YUM! That is the word for it. Ice cream was great and the service phenomenal. We can't wait to go back on our next trip to Alpena.

Not only does this place have excellent ice cream, floats, and other treats, it has an excellent atmosphere and friendly staff. I got the campfire smore's ice cream and my fiance got the strawberry cheesecake ice cream; both were delicious! We had a hard time picking because there were so many great looking flavors. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area. read more

What a disappointment. The ice cream is, well it taste like any store brand you would buy at any major retailer. It is not rich or creamy like a high quality ice cream. My son had a chocolate/ pineapple shake. He was also disappointed. He said that it really didn't taste like pineapple at all. I only give it two stars because of the cool interior and local garb that they had for sale inside. read more

Yum! That's all I have to say! The ice cream is delicious, the waffle cones are delicious and the employees are friendly! Thanks!

Love this ice cream shop. Another cool thing is that they carry Vernors, so you can get a Vernors float. Detroiters should love that. Great location, near the downtown district, lots of neat shops to visit while you're here. Best part of Alpena, once you get off US23 and M32... read more

Vacation time for my family usually includes looking for interesting places to have ice cream. Downtown Scoops is literally in downtown Alpena (a small town) in an interesting older building. Parking was easy to find. The ice cream was excellent and a very good value. Some of my family got junior sized cones, just right fo those with smaller appetites for ice cream. The rest of us got single scoop cones/dishes, which were very large. The service was friendly and excellent. At staff person taking care of us noticed on his own that he had overcharged us and corrected it immediately (before we had paid). I likely wouldn't have known the difference. The staff take orders and write names down so that you get the right cone/dish when your name is called. There is some seating inside and more outside. read more
