This was a last minute lunch place for a last minute de tour home we took. First of all, we LOOOOVE their home made red sauce. We got some pizza from the kids menu, some zachos & wrap. We were all satisfied with our choices. Our 2yr old ate up the pizza. Their beer options are also great! The whole place is open spaced with regular tables, high tops, booths & bar area where you can sit. Lots of area for foot & stroller traffic. Very kid friendly: with high chairs & changing areas in the restroom (parent win)! There were also few families that were there at the same time. As a Wisconsinite I was wary to try the "wisconsin cheese curds" but they absolutely did not disappoint. They were the perfect ratio and the seasoning was something i've never tasted before. Naan portions were very filling, but made for perfect leftovers. And that's coming from someone who isn't huge on restaurant leftovers. My wife and I decided to do a color tour of N. MI and came back to HopSide (BTW - we were about 2 weeks too early for the colors). The beer was very good. They had a very large selection. Not a knock on HopSide, but I am a big fan of Belgians and not enough places in MI make it. Food was too. She had the Mediterranean Wrap with Chicken and I had the Buffalo Chicken Salad. Both were large and had enough for leftovers. I didn't realize that the Buffalo Chicken came with celery chopped and tossed, but it was in the description. I am not a big celery fan (texture thing). The service was outstanding and friendly. This is now our go-to place in Alpena. Highly recommend. We ate inside and it was nice. Last time we ate on the patio outside, but the temperature was just a little too cool. read more

First, the beers we tried were very good. The Cream Brew La creme ale and the Hopsocket double IPA were quite flavorful. We also had the Veggie Medley appetizer (deep fried mushrooms, cauliflower and cheesey broccoli) which was tasty but could have stayed in the fryer for another minute or two (the broccoli was cold in the middle). Also ordered a couple of wraps which were generously filled and delicious - there was enough for another meal! read more

I'm happy to see another brewery in Alpena. At the time of this writing they haven't been open long. And the beer shows it. Give them a chance. Give them time. It happens with most if not all breweries. Could be they're just trying to do too much too fast. I like their concept and their vision. They just need to perfect they're recipes by continuing to brew and experiment with the process until they get it right. I'll be back again to check them out and see how they've grown. read more

The beer, food, and service were good. My issue is with the ambiance. The interior of this place does not look like a brewpub. It's nice enough, but very bland. I would lose the prison gray paint on the walls and find some better colors. Put a chalk wall behind the bar and list the beers and specials. The owners really need to jazz it up in there. Find appropriate decorations. Go online and look at the interior of brewpubs to get ideas. People return to places that have a vibe that they like. I think with the right changes, they could really increase their business. read more

So I have been in town a few weeks and wanted this place to be so much more than how it all worked out. I came back 4 times in a couple weeks and things just were pretty much never great. 1st visit for beer and pizza. I got in and ordered a beer. Solid cream ale. I got a pizza with emphasis on "Well done" please. My requests multiple times for a well done pizza. Well it came out with te cheese wasnt even melted. The crust was soft and chewy like a pretzel. I hate sending food back but in this case I asked for it to be cooked some more. It came back out tasty. Any pizza person knows after asking for well done then getting the vast opposite is disappointing. 2nd visit was an absolute nightmare. I cam in to a bar with 3 people in it. I pay in cash and ask for just a beer. I lay my $20 bill down. SHe takes my beer order and cash. Then proceeds to give me back my cash for the beer and never poured me a beer. She started cleanining glasses and just was in another world. A couple walked in and she served them their drinks upon request. Another patron had to flag her down (again 4 people at the entire inside) for a refill. I am sitting here in astonishment. I am finally able to get her attention and ask for a beer. She asked what am I having. Fully paid sitting in an empty bar, I pretty much swore off this place after that. 3rd visit. I got a pizza to go. This looked like scorched earth. Worst pizza in ages. Well done and a charcoal brickette are two other things. 4th visit. its 2:00 in the afternoon on a tuesday. I order a beer and a buffalo chicken wrap. I finish my beer slowly in abuout 20 minutes. I sit and wait another 15 minutes for my next beer. Still no Buffalo chicken wrap and fries. It took 45 minutes to get a wrap in a place with 7 other people in here besides myself. The wrap was decent and not worth waitinng 45 minutes for. I will give the beertender/ server credit for hard work. He was never sitting still and working as best he could. The grizzly cook would yell his name and apologize at every meal coming out for to delay. I just seen it take 15 minutes for a side of BBQ from the kitchen. I want this place to be great, but they just continue to do the exaact opposite every time. This time is my last time visiting this place. read more

I went to Hopside last week and was seated only to wait 10 minutes before someone even came to get my drink order. My food was bland, and you could tell they were trying to "cover up" old food with fresh produce. The service was horrid, food was okay, and they have a pedophile working in the back. They've been open for a few years, and yet i hardly see other customers. Let it be known that Hopside is on its way out for very good reasons. read more

On the tail end of our circuit vacation of the Mitten, we spent 2 nights in Alpena. Found Hopside - initially had a couple of cold ones on a hot day. Outstanding! On the Beach and ?? - we both prefer lighter beers, pilsners or kolsches. Excellent and served cold. Fried dill pickles - perfect. Later, not satisfied with the other dining options in Alpena (on a Monday evening), we wandered back and split a nice mixed greens tossed salad and a burger with fries. Both were excellent, served hot and fresh. Juicy burger. Outstanding table service outside during a thunderstorm (all other outside diners went inside, but our table's umbrella was sufficient) and our server was steadfast and didn't miss a beat. The outside dining faces a parking lot, so there's not much they can do about that, but it was a really nice experience and good food and brew! I live in Alpena , (nope, I am NOT a tourist). Actually, I only live 1/2 mile from Hopside. Anyway, I decided to give Hopside a try one day and I was so glad I did. I had 2 beers, an appetizer and a burger and i was stuffed. Great beer, great food and the service was excellent. I will be back.
