I work downtown and have been coming here for almost a decade. However, I took a break as they began serving skimpy amounts of food. After over a year of not coming here I decided to give them another try. A few sandwiches were good, but 9/10 times you will get the skimpiest sandwich (I call it a bread sandwich) ever with ONE slice of meat and one slice of cheese. See photo (that was my first bite). The soup is also kept on way too hot and the noodles are actually disintegrated and it's mushy. On top of all this, the lunch special is now $9 and you don't get much. When it was affordable it made sense but now it's pricey for very little. You will leave here hungry unfortunately. read more

Not sure that it was the brand they advertise as the taste and texture were not consistent with every other place I get sandwiches. Avoid this place if possible. When Café Ole, right down the street from Downtown Deli had a sign on the window saying that it was closed and for sale, I looked up Warren Street and saw that the Deli was open for business this overly warm November morning. I asked the folks working out front whether they were serving breakfast, and received an affirmative reply. Say no more. Just point me to the coffee. I settled into a table on the raised balcony/dining area and in short order a friendly woman approached to ask what I wanted to eat. I didn't need a menu and I asked for a Sausage, Egg and Cheese Sandwich on a Kaiser Roll. She nodded and said that particular item was, "...one of my specialties." Well, all right! And, she was right. Her creation arrived a few minutes later. The Eggs were Scrambled, rather than Fried, and I found that I liked the overall texture and taste better that way. The Sausage Patty was slightly crunchy on the edges, which was unusual. I couldn't tell if it was done purposely or not, but it was another surprising plus. The Roll was fresh and chewy with a light yeastiness. Nice. The Coffee was some unknown brand to me, but went down hot and smooth. Prices were lower than in the burgs, likely reflecting the lower rent paid in the core of this capitol city. I made a mental note to keep Downtown Deli on the circuit for breakfast before court, and potentially, lunch, afterwards. read more

It's difficult to find decent places to get food in Downtown Trenton, but that does not mean good places don't exist. Downtown Deli is a hidden gem in the city, located on a quaint street near the Capitol Complex. They serve breakfast and lunch, and ordering (at least, for lunch) is done on a slip of paper, where you check off what kind of sandwich you want and what additions you want in your sandwich. They also have a $5 special, where you get a half sandwich, a bag of chips or cup of soup, and a beverage. It's unfortunately far from where I work, but worth the trip from time to time! read more

Disgusting went into this deli this morning woman behind the counter handled with the same gloves raw bacon, cheese and roll that they use for my and other sandwiches as far as i am concerned all that cheese n rolls in bag are contaminated. when i said something to her which she was making my sandwich she gave me a face, i repeated to her about food contamination and then after packing up my sandwich she finally did change gloves. Decent prices, interesting menu, and good food that is made to order. The place is extremely small but it has tables to accommodate some of the lunch crowds. I gave 3 stars as the primary gal taking the orders has a tendency to be nicer to her male client than her female clients. At first I had thought it was me but after going more than several times, my male co-worker had actually made the comment. I work in Trenton and have been eating here for several years. Downtown makes the best subs in town. They use high quality ingredients, including Boars Head meats and cheeses, and prepare the sub exactly to my specifications. They even take the time to toast the rolls and melt the cheese on meatball subs. I can usually get a half sub, bag of chips, and ice tea for around $10, which is very fair. I've stopped in here a few times to pick up lunch when having to work in Trenton, and they aren't bad. Their sandwiches are made-to-order, they have a few hot soups to choose from, and they have a decent selection of pre-made salads that you can add things to. Fair warning - the line can get long. Since they make every sandwich to order, it takes a few minutes to actually get your food. There isn't a whole lot of space to wait, either. The reason they don't get a higher rating from me is that I'm not convinced they're as good as the wait and prices would suggest. The first time I went, I made the mistake of going in right around noon. It took almost 20 minutes to get my turkey on a hard roll - which cost more than I would have thought for what I got. The second time I went in, I gave the combo a shot, and it was... less worth it. 7 bucks for a quarter of a sub, a soda, and a bag of chips? I give them that my sandwich was made correctly (not hard), but for that much money, I expected to get more than a couple slices of deli turkey on a little piece of bread. That all being said, I'll probably end up back there many times in the future since I at least know the food there is good and it's so close to my office. If it was any further away, I wouldn't waste my time or money. read more

Second time here for lunch. They make very good sandwiches to order. As soon as you walk in you have to grab a piece of paper and write your order down then give it to the cashier. It's a small space and around lunchtime it's pretty cramped. Constantly trying not to bump into people.The wait time is about 10 minutes. All-in-All great sandwich place!!! read more

This is one of my go to lunch spots in Trenton. Contrary to some reviews the ordering is not confusing. You simply check off what you would like on your sandwich. And the employees there are always friendly and available to help you with the process. The cold cuts and meat are fresh and the sandwiches are made quickly. If they have it, I'd recommend getting the shrimp and corn chowder soup and a sandwich. But, you can't go wrong with their other soups too! read more

I've been working in the area for about 5+ years now and must admit I had never stepped into this establishment until recently, and I'm glad that I finally did! One of the new staff here recommended this place to me so I checked it out. They suggested "the special" which includes a quarter of a sub sandwich, a really small soup, and a drink. Admittedly I was overwhelmed upon entering as you need to fill out a form with small pencils and hand it to the first sandwich maker in the line of friendly women staffed there and they begin to assemble your sandwich as you head to self serve your soup. I am not over exaggerating when I say that this may have been one of the best lunches I've ever had while working in this area. The flavor of the meats and cheeses are fresh like the additional ingredients they use. Their soup is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I recommend the Shrimp Corn Chowder. The atmosphere is also nice. The only drawback of this place is that the price is towards the higher range for what you get. read more

This place was pretty good when it first opened. A few years later, and they have slacked off. Today was the 3rd time they got may sandwich wrong. I had it, so I walked back to the store and returned it for a refund. How hard is it to make a hoagie? Apparently for these guys, VERY! There might be a language barrier issue here, but that's no excuse. I'm done buying hoagies from them that are not what I ordered, or made with 2 pieces of meat. Randomly walked into this place at 7:30 on a Monday morning for a quick breakfast and was pleasantly surprised to be first of all greeted and greeted warmly as a bonus. My husband and I had a bacon, egg and cheese on a roll. It was cooked perfectly! And my husband loved it so much he felt like having another one. Sure, the sandwich ordering sheets are a little confusing the first time you go here, but when you've got two dozen city and state workers trying to order food at the same time, this system makes a lot of sense. The customer service is great - I've always been served with a smile, and while the food is pretty typical for a sandwich joint like this, I've never had a bad meal - plus, there is always a wide variety of soups available, and the coffee is good and cheap. You can eat in or take out, though finding a table inside during the lunch hour might be a challenge. read more
