Best place to train BJJ Downriver hands down. Great team, awesome teaching staff and plenty of mat space.

I was a metro parent for a year. The year ended yesterday. I have not been there in the last month…read morebecause the current sole owner, David Fox, has made it a hostile environment for me to bring my grandson back there. I want to let all of you know that these good reviews that you are seeing here are not for David Fox. I told him I was going to leave a google review and that I was going to tell every other parent that I know that left that gym to also leave a review. These good reviews are for who used to be joint partners with David Fox. For years the other partner ran all the operations of the gym and Were the face of the gym, were the ones on the mats training And teaching our kids. David Fox was never on the mat training our kids until he maneuvered some shady business dealing against them a couple months ago and moved them all out. At least fifty kids left . I had to wait until my one year paid in full membership was up for my grandson. Today I was supposed to sign a 2 year contract I paid it during a Black Friday special. It was to begin today. I requested a refund because I do not want to be committed to David Fox for 2 more years. He is not what I paid for and committed to when I paid it on Dec 3rd. He refused to refund me even though other parents have been refunded, that actually signed contracts. He started refunding everyone until there were too many that wanted to leave. He told me a bunch of parents have come in requesting refunds and he has denied them also. So a lot of people do not want to be there, but he is holding them hostage. I have submitted my filing with the Michigan Stare Attorney Office. Then if necessary, he will see me in court. To all of you, just make sure that you read that contract very, very carefully and dont be fooled by these reviews. They are not for David Fox

Starting off I'd like to say that if leaving 0 stars was an option, I would…read more I learned about metro ju-jitsu because I passed their tent @ the Wyandotte street fair. Naturally I was taken by their friendly demeanor & their whole spin the wheel* gimmick. Of course when I went in to do my trial class for my son who was 6 going on 7 at the time (2023) they told me for some reason they couldn't honor the deal they gave me at the street fair, which I found to be pretty convenient but I thought no big deal, right? So my son did the trial class and they did a pretty decent job of presenting themselves as a good place for instilling good values & being understanding & helpful when it came to teaching/molding children so I decided to sign him up for a year. Ashamed to say I didn't bother looking @ reviews (on google). If I did I would've seen the negative reviews with snarky/unprofessional/accusatory/immature & disrespectful responses which would have been a major red flag for me for obvious reasons & would've showed me what was to come. I would also like to make the point that reviews & responses to them are very important because when someone posts a response like the ones on this page it shows you how little respect or compassion the staff members have for other adult human beings. I don't know any respectable professionals in any occupation that don't know that they should talk to others with some level of respect or at least fake it on a public forum. It's laughable. Anyways, my son's time with this location was very short-lived. There was a day I came in with my son & his younger brother who is a toddler and is on the autism spectrum. Unfortunately my younger son ran out onto the mats with shoes on when I turned my head for a second & when I ran on them myself to get him out of the way I was approached by a young staff member whom I never met before. He thought it was a good idea & apparently the best way to leave a first impression was to yell at me in order me to get off the mats which I was flustered & clearly trying to do. When I grabbed my son & walked toward the viewing room I turned my head back in an effort to explain why my son ran into the mats by saying "he has autism" the guy answered back "that's NO excuse" in front of my children & every single adult & child @ the gym. As I was walking away he kept talking at me loudly like a child. I went to the viewing room & very quickly decided withdrawing my son was the only option considering that intolerance, ableism, rudeness & lack of manners is a big NO for me. I say intolerance because any normal human with compassion would see a young single mom with a young special needs child and at the very least pull me aside privately to say what needs to be said if anything. I say ableism because clearly there is no compassion or empathy for people who are neurodivergent. Lastly the rudeness/lack of manners is clear if you look at these responses to the negative reviews or you have the common sense to know how people are supposed to conduct themselves in a professional setting. When this happened all I wanted was an apology or at least for the guy to admit he could've pulled me aside. I was willing to admit I should've have went on the mats..I guess eventhough they could always just clean..but it's fine. I didn't get that at all. I just got staff members whispering about me & giggling. Real professional. My mother was with me as well & she was shocked & disgusted. I asked another staff member who I thought was nice about what happened & all he did was tell me how I was 100% wrong & didn't seem to care what I had to say. eventually after going back to the parent room and then worrying about my mother & I telling other people..they pulled me back into the office & terminated my contract. Of course walking out felt disgusted & embarrassed I ever took my son. It's very sad when a place has respect as 1 of their words they teach but they can't practice it Oh & they pressure existing members to flood their page with good reviews FYI Coach David is one of the biggest narcissists and phonies I've ever come in contact with. what a snake. His responses to his google reviews are pathetic and nasty.

They claim it's no problem to cancel or freeze your account at anytime. I spoke with jay back in august and he assured me I'd receive a refund, yet I never received a refund. My account was never canceled because I "didn't fill out a form"they claim they keep sending that I'm not receiving. I've called countless times at all hours of the day never to reach the receptionist. Finally.. after a week of coordinating with them through Facebook messenger and almost a thousand wasted dollars later, my account was canceled. I don't recommend this place, it's a cash grab at best. ***Edit 1 hour later*** URSA Academy - Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu Ann Arbor (Owner) 53 minutes ago Charles, if we have an email from you with your cancellation, we'll refund any charge that took place after that. We have had an issue with our website not forwarding our emails. If you can forward those emails to this email address: ursareception@gmail.com , we'll get it taken care of for you. We've been in business far too long to be a "cash grab." I assure you, we simply haven't received anything from you. I'll personally be watching the email for your response. Thank you. ************** My response is : As stated, I never received a form from you until reaching out via Facebook (a week ago) and having it sent to my girlfriend's email address. So you HAVE in fact received a cancellation form, because I was just notified ON FACEBOOK (of all places) that they have received my cancellation and have canceled my account (days after sending it). They have also stated over Facebook messenger that you don't offer refunds, even though Jay gave me his word in august that I would receive one, but now you're telling me you do offer one. So it seems like I'm being lied to, and my situation is being swept under the rug. Bottom line - Jay was well aware of the situation in august (he was assigned to me after all) and instead of helping you just milk my account until I make a big deal about it.

I was even more surprised to find an incredible gym that also happened to be an affiliate of Marcelo Garcia Academy. 313 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fairly new gym owned by Professor Fabio Lima, a talented Marcelo Garcia Blackbelt, and is a welcoming place for anyone to learn Brazilian jiu jitsu. The gym itself is clean, spacious, and is one of the few gyms that has all the amenities such as locker rooms, bathrooms, showers, and even a washer/dryer. After learning and personally training with Professor Fabio, I can attest that he is a gifted teacher who not only provides clear instructions to his students but also demonstrates great skill in implementing techniques while sparring. The students are both kind and great competitors, just like their professor, which makes for a positive training environment. It's amazing to find such a high caliber gym in Detroit and I look forward to training again in the near future. I highly recommend any newcomers or visitors to pay a visit to 313 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

I would still caution those who sign on for membership concerning the contract. The wording of the contract makes one believe that gym would waive the cancellation fee of $310 if you provide a decent reason for cancellation to the owner. My reason was financial hardship as the membership wasn't cheap and we are in a global pandemic, jobs aren't as secure and my hours were cut. I was hoping that they would understand but they didn't. Owner callously explained to me that the policy only applies to those who are moving away, which isn't what the wording in the contract implied at all. Beware
