This courthouse is big and has plenty of parking. Security is pleasant and it's never crowded. Easy getting in and out .

I've been dealing with my DV case with my ex for over 5 years. The entire experience opened my eyes into why it's one of the reasons victims don't want to press charges. They make you regret pressing the charges. My ex abused me for years, left bruises, scars, scratches and busted my mouth multiple times. From the beginning the DA didn't think I should present any evidence of past behavior, I wasn't even allowed to speak upon my behalf of the ordeal I went through. They changed my DA every couple months WITHOUT informing me, the DA's would not call me to update me on anything regarding my case. Just to get updates, I had to consistently call whichever DA was assigned to my case and if I ever received a call back, it was like pulling teeth trying to get answers. All the way until the very end, the DA's are beyond useless and make you feel pathetic or act annoyed for even asking for help or information. The whole ordeal with this court made me feel more broken afterward. Out of the many DA's I had maybe ONE DA actually had empathy and tried. It breaks my heart for anyone else that is in my position having to deal with this courthouse & their DA's. read more

Maybe a Five because I just go and wait in the line and while a time to wait and be by the checking point line where the securites are and then it is to the elevator or to see what side of the rooms are or the store and then just my way of time to go to take the elevator and then of others times too or to be in the elevator or in the way of each other and then to the court room hall area of the floor level ground of where your court room or rooms are at and then wait aside of the either side of the walls or the one side that is to be where the one certain room number your supposed to go at after waiting and a call by one of the jury duty clerks. Its not really a little shaking not to be there but then it is because if it feels to be of the court rooms hall area and then like the outside and when of something is out there that you are with others and then maybe listening to some music. read more

You need to work on who's picking up the phones. Give them a script if needed. Someone told me to call a different number for traffic and gave me the same number for the courthouse.. seriously. I had pressed one for traffic so it made no sense. The second operator told me I gave her my driver license number wrong... I was literally reading it off my card. The moment my surgery got scheduled (7 days before traffic court trial), I called the traffic clerk. My surgery got scheduled the day before my traffic court hearing. I needed to reschedule my court hearing and they said no because 10 days before the hearing is the last day to request a continuance. This is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY THAT IS OUT OF MY CONTROL I DONT CHOOSE WHEN OR WHERE I HAVE SURGERY HOW CAN YOU NOT BE FLEXIBLE WITH THAY. This is completely wrong. There has to be an exception for those with medical conditions. Better hope you don't get any kind of medical emergency because these crooks will screw you right over! read more

This isn't my favorite L.A. County courthouse. At other courthouses, they made it a point to make jurors feel welcomed and appreciated, but not so much over here. I came in on a Wednesday. The lady who processed us in the jury assembly room did not tell us her name. She was not overly friendly, and her instructions were not always that clear, but she did a decent job overall. After processing our forms, she told us to take a lunch break and report to the court department that afternoon. We waited outside the courtroom for a couple hours before the judge called us in just to tell us to return the following Monday at 2 p.m. for jury selection. (In all my previous experiences, jury selection began the first day we had to report.) The next morning, I tried calling the court clerk to ask some questions, but she told me to call back in the afternoon. When I did, one question I asked is why we had to report in the day before if they weren't even ready for jury selection, and she said honestly that she didn't have the answer to that. The following Monday, I went to work in the morning and then, drove fifty miles, racing to the Downey courthouse for jury duty. We waited 1.5 hours, dying of boredom, before the judge called us in to inform us that the case had been dismissed and that we were dismissed from jury duty. He explained to us that there was a lot happening behind the scenes, and he appreciated that we waited for so long. There are many points for improvement. 1) First of all, if the court is not ready for jury selection, don't make jurors report in. That is a waste of their time. I could understand if the court thinks it will be ready for jury selection that day, calls in the potential jurors, but then, something happens last minute, and finds that it is not ready for jury selection after all. If that is the case, instead of making that same group return the following week, the judge should just dismiss that group and summon a group of potential jurors that is scheduled to report during the following week. 2) If the court clerk cannot answer the phone while a court case is in session, she needs to designate someone else to take on that responsibility. 3) Other courthouses give jurors a survey to get their input on how to improve the jury duty experience. The Downey Courthouse ought to do that, too. 4) The day that I first reported in for jury duty was the day after Nathan Hochman had been sworn in the replace George Gascon as Los Angeles County District Attorney. The sign should have been updated by then if the court were proactive, but I can understand if it wasn't. However, the following Monday when I returned, the sign still hadn't been updated. Does that mean that the Downey Courthouse does not recognize the will of L.A. County's voters? 5) The hand sanitizer dispensers were not working. The day after my first day of jury duty, I called the maintenance telephone number and asked to have them fixed. The woman said she would bring it to the attention of the janitorial staff. When I came back the following Monday, they still were not working. 6) After getting into one of the elevators, the doors don't close. The alarm just beeps, so the people have to get back out and go back in. The security officer said the manufacturer doesn't make the parts to fix the elevator anymore. I said they need to replace the elevator, but he said they don't have a million dollars to do that. That makes me wonder how taxpayer funds are being spent. It seems to me that the Downey Courthouse is, more or less, in a state of disrepair, and employee morale is low. read more

It's never good when you have to visit the court, but I had to take care of a ticket so I arrived on a Thursday morning around 8:15am. Parking is hectic, but screening through the entrance wasn't bad after all.. certainly better than Los Angeles courts! The line to the clerk's window wasn't bad either! Took only 15minutes to talk to the officer and clean up my ticket. I would let everyone know that this court is probably the better version of courts in Los Angeles Downtown area. I was able to complete my need within 30minutes..which was shocking! Expect to look for parking since they are limited most of the times. Well the system is down and everyone chatting and laughing. I had a fast question about a ticket and trying to get an extension so I decided to walk up to The GC window. Not only was she rude but also a liar because I never walked up to the window saying "my ticket is in collections " I SAID " I DONT KNOW IF ITS IN COLLECTIONS BECAUSE IT WAS DUE TODAY!" according to her I said "my ticket is in collections " No I did not say that ma'am. Well, hope you read this and also a supervisor.. Here's a tip for the GC Service clerk. NEVER EVER CHEW YOUR GUM IN FRONT OF ANYONE SPECIALLY IF YOU ARE ON THE CLOCK. I went in today for the arraignment on a speeding ticket. I was dreading going in because we all know how the court system and county employees can be. I was originally scheduled to go in at 8:30 but because I got locked out of my apartment showed up at 9:15, in hopes that I could still take care of the ticket. They told me they could no longer see me at 8:30, but to come back at 1:30 (after lunch). Lucky for me I had the day off and live in Downey, so this worked for me. Come 1:30, and the checking-in of everybody (about 30 people/cases) and playing the rights tape took the longest. The court clerk was informative and efficient and straight to the point with everyone (without the typical rudeness that comes from county employees). The judge was friendly and more understanding and flexible than any other judge I've ever dealt with (this is speeding ticket # who knows). I pleaded "not guilty" and another clerk gave me my trial date paperwork within 10 mins of speaking to the judge. Overall a good experience for it being a courthouse. read more

Came here today to jury duty... First time I had ever had to go to the actual courthouse. I was around 5 minutes late due to the fact that I was slightly confused by the directions that I had originally printed out When I got there, ran up to the fourth floor... Well not technically ran but you get the idea. They do have metal detectors, and they scan everything before you come in, just FYI (I'm the nicest girl you'll ever meet, I smiled at the security guy, and gave him a hello) When I got up there, I went to the front desk, lady looked at me, looked slightly annoyed. And then told me to fill out a half sheet, and get my badge ready Two good things I can say about jury duty here is that it only took half an hour before they dismissed all of us, and the fact that there is free wifi! So yay to that. I would Not recommend going to the Downey Courthouse right now. It was so difficult to get anything done considering the new regulations that they have in place. No one was organized and no one knew what was going on. I was supporting my friend for a small issue and the reality was no one was able to assist us, answer any questions, or understand or facilitate the best way to get some thing done. Down he definitely needs to step it up regarding how they are going to facilitate and help people get everything done during the COVID-19 pandemic. read more

Some helpful things to know before you visit the courthouse... Criminal department #: 562-803-7050 Traffic department #: 562-803-7040 Small claims/civil #: 562-803-7054 There is security you have to get through before getting into the courthouse. COME ON TIME (be at your department by 8:30am) and dress appropriately if scheduled for a court appearance. They take walk-ins for a court appearance from 8:30-10:00am. People start lining up to get into the courthouse around 7:45 am. Clerks office is on the 1st floor. Dpt 2 and 3 are on the 2nd floor. Dpt 4 and 5 .... 3rd floor. Dpt 6 and 7 .... 4th floor. There's a drop box on the first floor to submit any payments without waiting in line. But make sure the clerks get your payment before the deadline, you wouldn't want a warrant now! read more

I came here early in the morning to pay my parking citation. There are plenty of parking at the time. I think it got busy after 8:30am because I see cars looking for a parking space. You will see people falling in line before the courthouse opens. It's best if you come very early, the wait will be worth it if you don't want to stay there in line for a very long time. Traffic citations is located at the right side on the 1st floor when you walk in. I wasn't sure if there was a sign saying traffic citations. Other courthouse like Pasadena has signs pointing the way. The employees at Downey are helpful. They answered my questions. read more

Honestly the worst court i have ever been to, let start from the beginning.... I showed up 8am because my court was at 8:30am, the door opened around 9am and after we got in and the lady has been calling names up for 10 minutes then they realized the had the wrong list, so they needed to go back and print another list, they came back around 9:30am and with the worst attitude they started calling names up, the lady that works in the court room threats everyone like Sh** and thats not right, a ticket doesn't make you a murder or rapist! After my turn was over i had to go out in the hallway until my name was announced so i could pick up my papers and that took only a little over 1 hour... I actually like this court. Unlike most other venues in Los Angeles County, including Norwalk, which is very close to this location, there is free parking here, smaller lines, and friendly courtroom clerks and staff. Make sure you remove your belts and cellphones and anything else in your pockets before you go through the metal detectors. read more

So, after spending 20 minutes on Downy courts pathetic phone system, which kept sending me to the wrong department, I finally got through to small claims where I was now informed that a these lazy and inept employees are now at lunch and won't be back until after 1pm! I actually am very surprised how organized it was. I was actually dreading going here because I thought it would be like the DMV. It was in many ways the DMV and even more safe, but it was very organized with multiple lines and such. I came first in the morning to resolve a traffic ticket and it was very simple. I got in and out in less than 30 minutes. Not much I can say about the DMV. There are lines for various different situations and traffic was the least longest, thank God. I can only imagine the worst this place can get. Places like this you really see the real life from other people and the trials and tribulations people have to go through. I had to go three times today to the GC window #6 today to pay a ticket the first time she didn't want to take my credit card because my license was expired I told you that I needed to pay my ticket to get my license she said that wasn't her problem. I had my daughter waiting for me in the car so I called her to come in so I can pay with her card she didn't let her pay because she only had a student ID she 15 she doesn't have a CA ID yet she said she couldn't do anything about it I had to go to the bank and get cash. I should of done that since the beginning. My problem with that lady is her attitude she gets mad every time you ask her anything it's not the first time I deal with her, she had the same attitude when I brought my brother in to pay a ticket. The community service department is run by one small old lady , it's so inefficient and she sets her own price to people completing hours. This is hands down the dumbest and worse run branch I have ever experienced . They need to hire at least one more person. I never thought I'd write a glowing review for a courthouse but here I am. Gushing over a courthouse! I had a really pleasant experience at the Downey Municipal Courthouse. Actually I had several positive experiences with the court. Each time I went there. That says a lot because my reasons for going to the courthouse were NOT pleasant. I was taking three parties to small claims. But my experience with the parking, the workers, the judges, the small claims advisers were all positive. Can't really say the same about the parties I took to court but that is to be expected (it was THEY who made it difficult). First of all...parking. Parking is free and easy. I never had to stress about parking at all. It's free and right in front of the courthouse. This was never the case in Long Beach where you have to pay a lot to park and walk a distance. Second of all...the court house was never packed. I never had to wait in long lines or felt claustrophobic from all the people. Long Beach Courthouse was often very crowded to the point of being anxiety ridden. Although that has probably changed with the new gleaming courthouse. When I had to file papers I didn't have to wait hardly at all. When I went to speak to the small claims adviser he gave me a concise answer to my question. Friendly and intelligent and available. Conveniently located on the first floor where you file papers. When I finally had to go to court...the judges were very fair and very intelligent. One of them went deeply into my case doing research to come up with a fair verdict. I SO APPRECIATE this. She didn't have to but she did anyways. Thank you Judge Lillian Jacobs! I won one case and lost the other but I am not upset at all with the judges. They write these summations on your judgment of why they decided the way they did. I understand why I lost the one I did...it was because I didn't have definitive proof (and I accept that). Long Beach judges don't appear to write any summations...although it's possible I could have missed them. I really really appreciated the fairness and intelligence of the judges (Pearce and Jacobs). After coming across a very harsh and really just mean judge in Long Beach the Downey judges are such a breath of fresh air. They made the process not as hard as it had to be. I was sort of upset they moved all small claims to Downey but now not so much. Yes, it's farther away, a lot farther, but in many ways much much less stressful. If you have to go to court it's not a bad place to do it. read more
