Quirky! Fabulous & funky. Glimpsed the shop as we were returning to I80 after a ridiculous wild goose chase for a health shop called Nutrition Time. We pulled over, called and turned around. We found everything we were looking for and more including black sesame seeds, Braggs cider vinegar, Kombuchas, Applegate bacon, Epic Wagyu Beef jerky, and standard process supplements. An oasis for vegans right off of the highway! The staff members are all very knowledgeable and so friendly. Nice medium-sized health food grocery store with a sandwich and juice bar with three tables. The wrap and sandwich were good and the portion sizes were just right. The smoothie was a classic - banana, strawberry, apple juice and ice. The store and restroom were nice and very clean. We did wish there had been a changing table in the restroom. There were many items on sale in the store and a nice selection of products. So often on the drive between Toledo and Chicago, we've had to settle for unhealthy snacks from convenience stores because it's still hard to find good vegan options along the way. This organic market is just about as good as it gets for the area. They have a ton of selections on everything from frozen organic pizza to gluten free cake mix and even tons of makeup. There once was a time, prior to the Whole Foods store opening in Mishawaka, as well as local Martin's and Kroger stores expanding their organic selections, that I would drive a good 35-40 minutes just to shop at this store. In particular because of the Whole Foods store opening, I really can't find justification to continue shopping here. I was always disappointed during my visits at the very limited selection of produce offerings here, as well as the considerably higher prices for their vitamin selections. The store is cramped, outdated, and may not appeal at all to anyone outside of its generally niche consumer base. That being said, rarely will you encounter such fantastic customer service from employees. The information that I've learned from the staff here on even my most casual past visits regarding terminology, vitamin quality, etc. has been very valuable to me, and always relayed in a manner that I felt like I was talking to a friend of many years instead of a store employee. For better prices, quality, and variety, I would recommend Whole Foods in Mishawaka; however, for the best overall shopping experience, with recommendations and advice from very knowledgeable staff members that care about their customers, I'd say that the extra trip to this store would be worth it. read more

I went to down-to-earth to purchase a smoothie. After using the dirty restroom I proceeded to place my order for the smoothie. It cost almost $10. They did not offer a premixed smoothie with what I wanted so I asked them if I could make my own. The base cost of the smoothie is five dollars. The only base that I used were the bananas. After the almond milk, peanut butter and whey protein, it got up to $10. I complained about the cost because I did not use three of the base ingredients because I replaced them with my chosen ones. The manager could have cared less. So basically, if you want a custom smoothie, you will have to pay $5 just for the cup and ice to get you started. Everything else is extra. They will not take into account that you aren't using any of the base ingredients. read more

I'm excited to have found this market! I wish they had more organic produce, but they can only put out what is available (I came from central Cali which has tons of organic produce) BUT this place does have a lot of great food - frozen, fresh and dried. They have a great tea selection which I'm always excited to find! They have a REALLY great selection of vitamins and body products. They also have a pretty good selection of organic wines and beers. Love shopping at down to earth. Excellent selection of gluten free. They do their best with local, in season produce! Definatley check out this family owned fab store!! I have always been intrigued by holistic, wholesome ways of living, whether it be naturpathic dr's, eating organic, choosing herbs and supplements over pharmaceuticals(which can do more harm than good seemingly). I have not followed a healthy lifestyle for 98% of my 27 years, sad...I know. We live in a world where it is quicker and cheaper to get a meal from Mcd's then it is to cook a homemade, healthy, organic meal. I am paying the reprocutions of poor food choices, prescriptions for antibiotics, etc. I found Down to Earth online from the good ol' google search and called the store asking for advice. I spoke with Amanda and even laughed that she and I share the same name. Just from our brief conversation on the phone I was impressed by how knowledgeable she was and how genuine she seemed. I stopped into the store after work and was beyond amazed with how helpful Amanda and Amy were and they seemed so empathetic and caring and wanting to help in whatever way they could. The prices were a bit steep however, when it comes to my health and wellness overall I think it's worth it. These people go above and beyond the typical "Hi how can I help you". The men who work there talk about who is cute to work with and are creepy while they stare at you browsing around. Many of the red tag sales are just out of date items that were overpriced to begin with. Products are not meant to be sampled or tested unless you intend to pay for them. Organic produce left little to be desired and overall very expensive. Other area health food stores offer far more polite staff and better sales/discounts. Not impressed. Also, very strict return policy if you are unhappy with a product that crumbles they won't even get you a replacement. read more
