I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism a year and a half ago when my gynecologist did blood work concerning my osteoporosis at age 45. I had a PTH of 268 and was told to see a surgeon right away to get this problem taken care of. I went to my local surgeon and was assured, even though my parathyroid did not show up on any tests, that they would still be able to find it and get it out. I had a 4 1/2 hr surgery that was unsuccessful. I was then referred to a major university hospital in my state to one of the top parathyroid surgeons there. They repeated all the testing, along with additional testing that never revealed the parathyroid at all. The surgeon suggested exploratory surgery again and I declined. I was ready to give up and just live with it but wanted to give it one more try. So I started to do more research and found the Norman Parathyroid Clinic. I started talking to people and came across 2 people in my home town that had went to the Norman Parathyroid Clinic and had great success. The one lady had decided to talk with me and tell me about her experience with the Norman Parathyroid Clinic. It was so positive and she had assured me that everything that is listed on the Internet is true so I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. The only problem with me and the other 2 people in my hometown was that they had not had a previous extensive surgery. I still felt that I had to give it a shot so I sent all of my medical records to the Norman Parathyroid Clinic for the doctors to review. Dr. Norman called me for my consult and told me that he would help me. I will say I was less than optimistic and very skeptical because 2 other surgeons had told me the same thing, yet both were unsuccessful. My husband and I set up the surgery, and flew down to Tampa, FL. We flew down on Sunday, and met with the doctor on Monday morning. I had a sestamibi scan after I got processed into the clinic. Dr. Poliski did a ultrasound on my neck after that, and seemed to find something. Then Dr. Norman came in and did an ultrasound, without consulting with Dr. Poliski to see if he could find it in the same spot. They did! Through all of the scar tissue and more than a year after I was diagnosed, they found it! They did a 14 minute surgery and removed the bad parathyroid. I was cured!!! I couldn't believe it and neither could my husband! Their surgery floor at Tampa General operated like a well oiled machine. From the time we stepped off the elevator until the time that we left, everyone knew exactly what they needed to do and were extremely nice and very knowledgeable. My story is a bit lengthy, but I feel it may help other people. I hadn't been feeling well for years. I had chronic fatigue and a host of other symptoms, including debilitating anxiety and terrible anger. I didn't feel like doing anything, or going anywhere. I put myself in a bubble and just stayed in the bedroom. I went to Doctor after Doctor, specialist after specialist, with no answers. Basically saying, we can't find anything wrong. Even I began to think I was crazy. About four months ago, my rheumatologist sent me for blood work. My PTH level was 91. He diagnosed me with Hyperparathyroidism. I asked what that was and he really didn't seem to know much about it and said to find an Endrochronologist. I did that and they assured me I didn't have it and said they would check my blood work again six months. When I got home, I researched the disease and that's when I found the Norman Parathyroid Clinic and Dr. Politz. I found out that PTH level without a calcium level could not determine Hyperparathyroidism. I had additional blood work done and for almost the first time in my life, it came back normal. I had all but four of the symptoms, plus severe osteoporosis. I was told that because my calcium and PTH were normal, I probably didn't have it. They told me that if I still wanted a consultation with a Dr, they would set it up (I live in Az). I said yes and within a week I got a call from Dr. Politz and that's when my life began to change. Although my blood work was not what they normally see, he listened, took into consideration my symptoms and severe osteoporosis and ordered two more sets of blood work, each a week apart. I felt validated as a person again, rather than some crazy loon the other doctor's tried to make me out to be. My levels were higher on the first set of tests, but still within the normal range. The second set came back with high PTH, high calcium and low Vitamin D. Once Dr. Politz reviewed the blood tests, he said there was an 80% chance I had a tumor. So, after talking to my husband, we decided to make the trip across the country to Florida. Dr Politz did my surgery and found I did have a tumor and removed it. A normal parathyroid gland produces 30-80 hormones, my bad gland was producing 1525! I am one week post-operative and feel great. Dr Politz is not only an expert surgeon, but a kind, caring and thorough Doctor. I have now begun to enjoy life once again, my anxiety and anger are gone and I have energy once again. Everyone at the parathyroid clinic was wonderful and I am thankful for all of them. Finding Dr Politz and making the decision to have the surgery was the best decision I could have made and it changed my life. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Politz and highly recommend him. Dr. Politz saved my life even before I went to the Norman Parathryoid Center to have surgery! He answered numerous questions I had with regards to my high blood calcium levels that my primary care doctor claimed were "normal", despite being diagnosed with osteoporosis and terrible GERD (hyperparathryoidism is pretty much the only disease that can cause those three issues at the same time!). After I refused to listen to my now ex-primary care doctor, I got myself down to the Norman Parathryoid Center where the incredible team of Dr. Politz, Dr. Boone and Dr. Parrack removed 3.5 tumors on my parathryoids! Another few years of my old doctor just "watching" my high blood calcium levels could have been disastrous for me. For 4 years I listened to my primary care doctor tell me that my blood calcium levels of 10.1-10.4 were normal, while I suffered with hyperparathyroidism. Be your own doctor! Just 5 days ago I had 3.5 tumorous parathyroids removed. I immediately felt no bone pain once I recovered from surgery. Doctors Politz, Boone and Parrack did what I learned most other endocrinologists do not do and tested my other parathyroids once they found the first bad one, saving me another operation down the road. Anyone diagnosed with hyperparathryoidism should just save themselves a lot of time from dealing with doctors who only do this operation periodically, and work with doctors who do only this operation all day long. After four failed surgeries from other surgeons, countless amounts of testing, and many negative side effects over a thirty-year time frame, to say I was reluctant to submit myself to a fifth surgery is an understatement. In 2004 after my fourth surgery for hyperparathyroidism, I was told that all surgical options had been exhausted; and my only option was to begin using the newly developed drug Sensipar. For fourteen years I was able to make my symptoms of hyperparathyroidism manageable, but at the cost of extremely high numbers in my 24-hour urine collections. In essence, drug therapy was a trade off and not a cure. In 2004 I gave up any hope of a cure; and since surgery was not an option, I simply got on with my life. A few years ago after retiring to Florida, I began to allow myself to think maybe, just maybe, The Norman Parathyroid Center might be able to help me. There are truly not enough adjectives to express my praise about the center, the surgeons, the staff, and the top notch treatment with which I was given. From the moment I first contacted the Norman Parathyroid Center, until the moment I left the hospital, I encountered nothing but professional, courteous, and caring people. My surgical team consisted of Dr. Norman, Dr. Politz and Dr. Lopez. Every wonderful review I'd read about them was spot on. Their genuine care, compassion, and concern for you as both their patient, and a human being with fears and worries, emanates from them at first meeting. Having lived for 8years with an undiagnosed hyperparathyroid i was looking forward to a surgical removal in Jan 2017 here in the U.K. I was in the operating theatre for 5 hours and unfortunately the adenoma was not found. Not wanting to live with a high calcium indefinitely, I began to researched the excellent work that is undertaken at the Norman Parathyroid Centre in Tampa Florida. I finally made contact with them and after many emails to Dr Norman I became more confident that this might be an option for me. I finally took the plunge and went over to Tampa in September. From the moment I arrived at the clinic each individual member of staff treated me with kindness and respect. The sestamibi scan was able to locate the adenoma and an ultrasound performed by Dr Norman clearly showed the offending adenoma. Dr Norman and his team successfully removed the tumour in just 26 minutes. I found the whole experience amazing from start to finish. The knowledge and expertise displayed by Dr Norman is beyond words. I would urge anyone with this condition in the UK to explore fully the expertise of the surgeon, particularly if the scans have not revealed the adenoma prior to consenting to surgery. September 22, 2014 Jim Norman and Deva Boone removed a bad parathyroid gland. My consultation surgeon is Doug Politz. The care exhibited by Jim, Deva, and Doug pre and post op was very caring and precise. The entire staff at the Norman Parathyroid Clinic are to be commended for their professionalism and care. I had surgery in the morning, went out to lunch, checked into a different hotel, walked around the town of Dunedin, FL, and went out to dinner with friends. This group knows what they are doing and how to do it. The information provided on parathyroid.com and on their youtube videos is outstanding. It answers almost every question a patient may have regarding parathyroid issues. I totally recommend Jim Norman, Doug Poulitz, and Deva Boone who I have first hand experience with pre-op, for surgery, and post op. All my emails were answered very quickly, even on the weekend. I received a call the night of surgery from the surgeon to check on me. I am one of the lucky ones who are able to hit the ground running after anethesia and having parts removed. I did not have to take anything for pain after leaving the hospital. I have almost no bruising around my incision. My Endocrinologist told me going to Tampa was a good plan. I am so impressed by Dr. Politz and his team. I have literally suffered for years with an undiagnosed Hyperparathyroid health issue. I had so many health issues I felt like the doctors thought I was a hypochondriac and began to write my health off. At a loss and concerned for my overall health I began to search for help on the Internet. My search lead me to Dr. Politz at the Norman Parathyroid Center. I registered as patient and faxed the team my health records. When Dr. Politz called me he was prepared to discuss my medical history and test results. He listened to my concerns and told me he could cure my hyperparathryiodism. Then asked when would I be ready for surgery. Three weeks later I flew from Dallas to Tampa for surgery on 11/20/17. Dr. Politz and Dr. Boone from the Norman Parathyroid Center removed my parathyroid adenoma about a month ago. I found my experience with primary hyperparathyroidism unlike any other health issue I have ever had. After the initial diagnosis by my primary care physician based on my calcium levels and my PTH, I stumbled on the parathyroid.com website and read every page on it and watched almost every video at least twice. It made so much sense. When I had my bone scan and learned I have osteopenia, I could not see the sense in waiting any more. I did not even bother with seeing a local endocrinologist -- a waste of time and money as I saw it. I already knew what I had and what the cure was--removing the adenoma(s). These surgeons are unique: it's true you can have your problem cured in one visit (great for if you must travel across the country), and they call you before and after your surgery. They even give you their cell phone numbers so you can be confident you can contact them if you have a problem afterward. I have seen family members in the hospital who have been unable to get a hold of their doctors even with the nurses' help. Just realized this review appears under my name rather than my son's. ;) Josh was reviewing the excellent care he received. All completely accurate but I will hopefully be writing my own review of Dr. Politz and/or other doctors very soon regarding my is n care. Know how God ALWAYS equips us for 'such a time as this'? Well, all last year when I was advocating for my adult son & learning about hyperparathyroidism & hypercalcemia, I knew I had so many of the symptoms myself for at minimum 15 years. I brushed it aside thinking I would seem like a hypochondriac possibly to my hometown dr. that not only did Josh have this but I did, too? So like an idiot I kept quiet a bit longer. Several months later I switched primary care & asked for calcium, pth (when cal came back elevated), & vit D to be drawn (I had been D def for several years). Lots of other labs were done as well (kidney stone evidence in bloodwork). Laboratory reference range had 10.2 (10.7 on repeat) as normal calcium for me but we know "adults are in the 9's". Primary drs' office said but PTH level is normal it can't be adenoma. ;) Oh yes it can: Dr. Norman says so & does a couple of surgeries daily on pts just like me. I've just returned home to Chevy Chase, Maryland, after my parathyroid surgery with Drs. Norman, Politz and Parrack of the Norman Parathyroid Center and I concur with everything that Pete B. from San Diego wrote in his review. The surgical team and staff at the center can't be more pleasant, professional and efficient. I was lucky to have a friend in Maryland who did all the research on the Norman Center a year ago when she found out about a problem with her parathyroid. She immediately told me to get in touch with the guys in Tampa and not to waste my time with the local options. She had already been there/done that. My Maryland endocrinologist was recommending a number of tests and procedures that weren't necessary once I got in touch with Dr. Politz and studied their informative and easy-to-understand website. Now that my bad gland has been removed and the three remaining have been checked and biopsied, I am recuperating with a very small incision and feel terrific. No more achey bones! Yeah! Three and a half months ago Dr. Politz and his associate, Dr. Boone, performed my parathyroidectomy at the Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa and the experience was top rate from start to finish. The entire operation is seamless from the ladies in administration and the nurses and doctors who create your chart, to the staff at Tampa General and the expert surgeons. I was so confident in the process before my trip to Tampa that I went unaccompanied. Even the hotel that is recommended by the center was helpful and caring and made the trip to the hospital and back a cinch. Both my surgeons and all of their staff are welcoming and solicitous and I always felt that I was in capable hands. One certainly gets the immediate impression that the thousands of procedures that are performed at the center annually have created a well oiled machine. Dr. Politz, was a wonderful doctor! He was so personable and knowledgeable, and made me feel very comfortable and confident in my decision to have traveled from Lafayette, Louisiana to have my surgery. All of the staff was also extremely personable and made me feel so at home. They really went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and answer any and all questions that my husband and I had. It is now one week after my surgery, and I feel better than I have in a very long time! My energy level is back, and I am experiencing more and more improvements with the other symptoms that I had as a result of the tumor. If you know for sure that you have a parathyroid tumor, I would not hesitate to contact doctor Norman's clinic as soon as possible, and see about having it removed! Once I was diagnosed with Parathyroid disease, my daughter who is a CRNA did the research on who should do the surgery. She felt the best place was the Norman Parathyroid Center. Dr. Politz called to talk to me about the surgery, he helped to put my mind at ease and when I meet him in person I knew I had made the right choice. I have osteoporosis, being diligent I followed all the advice from my GYN about walking, riding a bike, weight lifting etc. Nothing worked to build my bones. I am looking forward to regaining bone density and to feeling better in general. My surgery was at 7 a.m. Dr. Politz called that night to see how I was feeling. I really do not know how to put into words the kindness, professionalism, and brilliance of this surgeon that not only changed my life but saved it. I do not think Dr. Politz could perform every surgery that comes to the Noman Clinic but I would certainly try to request him if you are going for surgery. I was told I did not have any parathyroid problems by other physicians but Dr. Politz made the correct diagnosis. The night of surgery I was eating Pizza and playing poker.This is the picture the night of surgery. No makeup but feeling great. I did not feel confused, depressed, fatigued nor was I in pain. It has almost been 5 weeks since my parathyroidectomy surgery (March 17,17). All I can say, is that you all are AMAZING. But after all of my research on your extremely thorough website, I didn¹t expect anything less. Since my surgery, I have had my kidneys checked for stones and all looks great and my Dexa scan came back great as well. Officially, 2weeks after my parathyroidectomy surgery, all of my energy began coming back full force. I had NO idea how much energy I had lost, and was seriously not expecting this. Dr Politz is an absolute wonder... And just as sweet as he is talented, with real compassion for his patients and their families. He and Dr Norman not only removed my husbands adenomas on 2 parathyroid glands... He also stayed in there to remove a benign nodule on his thyroid. He said, why leave it and have to track it every few years? We're in there, so let's get rid of it. Something not usually heard ... Mostly it's we'll keep an eye on it and if need be in the future... Dr Politz was the surgeon who was in charge of my parathyroid tumor surgery and care September tenth. He was thorough, professional, knowledgeable and despite the fact that he does this all day every weekday, year in and year out, every question I had was patiently answered, he explained clearly exactly what was being done and why, and I never once felt rushed. He was warm and had a sense of humor; he was human with me. I worked and volunteered at a teaching hospital for a quarter of a century; I've dealt with many doctors. I have never written a review before, but I cannot say enough good things about the Norman Parathyroid Center and Dr. Politz. I had surgery last Wednesday after a telephone consultation. Of my local doctors, one said I definitely did not have primary hyperthyroidism, and one said that if I had it, it was very minor. The tumor they took out was not only putting out over 15 times the PTH hormone, but it was wrapped around the nerve of a vocal chord. The experience was as pleasant as possible, all the personnel were wonderful, and I am now cured and very happy, not only with Dr. Politz's expertise, but with the center in general. read more
