Impressive line-ups of quality fine chocolates! Finally came here to pick up my order (chocolate & a cake - Crème brulée Dôme) for our Valentine's day. And my visit did not end just for pick-up. I spent time in the store as they have interesting imported items on every shelf and at every corner of the store. All pretty looking, thinking about my future gift plans! I could not resist buying fresh cheese which they carefully select. I got "Morbier AOP des Forges" semi-soft cows' milk cheese of France, semi-hard with complex flavor. I also picked up Caper & Anchovy tapenade. It went very well with the cheese. I can spread this on everything to make it a good wine snack!!!! The chocolate was amazing. Each piece has its own character, with variety of textures. Very good quality. I should come back again to try other flavors. Addictive. Creme brulee Dome was smooth and light, although I wanted more textural variations in each bite. Actually, this place has been in my list for a long time - it is one of the few places that carry Mont Blanc cake in east Toronto. But it was not available on today's visit. Douce France is not your typical Toronto patisserie. While others bake and make things here, Douce France chooses to import everything fresh from France. The result? Pastries that are indulgently buttery, croissants that are airily flaky, chocolates that are delicately refined and not overly sweet. Some good food here. The croissants are just ok, not flakey, I wouldn't get them again. I got the kouign amann as well, it was ok, it grows on you after a few bites, nice buttery flavour and not overly sweet. I also got this apricot tart that had a sugary base/crust, supposed to a carmelised crust, from being cooked in a sugary syrup I think... It is a cool, jam-packed shop with lots of French imported products. The shop staff was very knowledgeable and shared information about the products and the history of the shop. She claimed that the chocolates where are imported from France and or made from fair trade chocolate all over the world including Africa and Venezuela. I don't know how possible it is to have fair trade chocolate LOL I had the canelé for just $1.×× which is cheap compared to other shops. It was stiff and chewy even after re-heating as recommended. I didn't enjoy the taste or texture. It was like a stiff "casavapone" if u know what that is. I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to taste. I'll have to try that another place one day. They have the hot chocolate from Angelina which was pretty cool. So much variety here, from packaged Goods to baked goods. If you have never been to France or miss your travels there, I would definitely recommend this shop. read more

I first had a kouign amann in Montreal years ago. It blew me away, and ever since then I've been looking for a KA as good as that one. I even went to Paris for a week and spent the entire time trying to find a KA as good as the one in Montreal. None came close. I later learned that the one I had in Montreal was specific to that area - usually you find them in a muffin-style version, but the one in Montreal was a pie-style. And then I stumbled upon this (okay not me - a friend found them for me). I was blown away by how damn good they were here. Hell, I'd say they are better than the ones in Montreal. This place is beautiful. Everything about it makes you yearn to be in Viens or Avignon with an espresso and a croissant or a lemon tart and a glass of rose. The cheese selection is amazing. Not too many, just the right ones. Everything from a beautiful cranberry Brie to a gorgeous comte. The pastries are perfect. And they taste so buttery and flaky. My only complaint is the cost. Not sure how to review this place. They have an incredible selection, things that you could truly not get anywhere else in the city. Lots of beautiful products that are imported directly from France, but my god it is pricey. Like, $25 for a jar of jam pricey. Or like $14 for a small package of cookies. The few sweets that I tried (lemon tart, caramel candy, fruits bread and truffle) it was really tasty, all fresh and well prepared. They seems to use all the best ingredients for everything they make. The lady was really kind and helpful with us, but a little too pushy, asking us to try different things while we didn't want to. But two things got me a little down with this place: 1- I understand the quality of the products but I think it's a little over priced, too expensive. 2- After choosing the sweets and sitting on the table, it took so much time for them to bring us what we choose to eat. We almost gave up and left. Would I recommend? Hmmmm, yes. It will be a good place to buy maybe a gift for someone that really appreciate sweets. Cute little bakery with a wide variety of french pastries. The owner was very friendly and helpful giving us a quick description of what everything was. We ordered the chocolate croissant, the almond croissant, a kouign-amann, the leek quiche and a couple of cappuccinos. Everything was delicious! The only thing I would say you need to keep in mind is that if you are concerned about time, this is not the place to go sit at. Like a couple other reviewers mentioned, you order at the counter and somehow it takes a really long time to get the pastries to your table even though there are only 4 tables in the entire place. French food culture has a certain flair about itself. It's big on flavours and everything must be just so. That culture has stayed true in this lovely shop. When you walk in you're met with a perfect display of imported French goodies. The Croissants, Tarts, Macarons and other pastries are as good as it gets. All imported from France no less, and the chocolates are some of the best I've tasted. There's also a number of seats and a patio with for you to enjoy a nice sandwich or soup; perhaps a cappuccino or latte? You can't really go wrong with anything here, when it's all made with such care. This shop really is a little slice of Paris! Ever want to try and see what the French gets to enjoy every hour and every day? Douce France goes out annually to France and brings back only the best to share with us frozen Canadians. They're actually there now till the end of February sourcing their 2018 items to let us try and nibble. A small little quaint and rustic cafe just north of the busy intersection of Yonge & Eg. It looks more like a retail store but you can definitely sit among the shelves to enjoy a piece of Paris. The staff here is lead by a lovely lady who has the most wonderful crisp French Parisienne accent. She was very thoughtful to explain all the different treats that I've never heard of ... including the Soleil (yeah how could I resist.. blueberry or raspberry gelee and wrapped in marzipan). Here you can find many wonderful things that could be amazing host gifts or just a day to indulge in all the best butter and sugar confections. This also include the very famous and well known Angelina Hot Chocolate. As you go further back, youll find a few more savoury options including sauces and preserved vegetables. Just be aware on a few things... it's not cheap and barely affordable. A simple bag of candies can easily set you back $18 (My Soleils did!). That being said, you can find some gems here that are not only wonderful but wallet friendly. Kouignamann were here too and I would have loved to try the Brittany treat but ... I decided on the Soleils and Canele. Canele - One of my favourite baked treats from France. This is simple ingredients transformed into something absolutely wonderful. They're baked in bronze casts that allows the sugar to create a wonderful dark caramelized crust that is crispy and gives a nice crunch when biting into it. The flavour should be a rich vanilla and rum scent throughout and saturating the eggy airy custard inside. The texture would be like a super fresh steamed Vietnamese rice cake... a bouncy and lovely chew to it. The ones from Douce France are not quite there... the flavour profile and colour are all there. It's just the wrong texture. It was soft and doughy throughout the exterior and interior. That being said, the price was very favourable... Only $1.10 for a medium sized one. For the best Canele, try Blackbird or Roselle... both sell out consistently for good reason. 4/5 Is it for an every day trip.. probably not. I would even say that it's not even weekly. It can put a serious dent into your wallet but what a joy to find the occasional gem that gives you a bit of taste of France. read more

The store claims that the food is fresh but the owner tried to sell me an expired cake that was previously ordered by a client. Unsure if the client forgot their order or changed their mind. The cake was not put out on display but was inside one of the cabinets. I saw that the cake expired a month ago and looked like it had fallen several times. When I refuse to buy it, she got mad and claimed I asked her to reserve it - which I never did. She was yelling at me as I paid for my purchases (by this time, I was tempted to leave the store without buying anything). I was shocked. As a paying customer, I never thought I would go through something like this. It was close to Christmas so the store was packed. I felt so embarrassed because people were looking at me. As I left the store, I was thinking, why was she getting mad at me and not at the customer who originally ordered it? If the customer decided not to get it, she should have put it on display right away so it's visible. She claims she only sells fresh products, so why did she not throw out that cake once it expired rather than try selling it to me or sell it at a discount once it was close to the expiry date. Did she think that harassing me would make me cower and buy a stale cake? These are the questions that raced through my mind. I have spent a lot of money on this store and on each visit, I not only leave with 2 - 3 bags full of merchandise, I also eat there with my family, friends, and visitors. Instead of treating me as a valued client, she publicly humiliated me. After suffering her rudeness and maltreatment, I decided not to go back to that store again. I have since discovered several wonderful shops in Toronto that sell french baked goods, freshly baked in the premises. Some offer products imported from France. Most of all, they treat me respectfully and provide great service. These are the shops I go to now. I was reading some of the comments here and I'm not at all surprise that some clients share my experience. I just love all these speciality shops all over the city. This is no exception, it has so much variety, all in theme of France. The owner is very friendly and very serviceable. They have great pastries and wish I could make it a daily habit if they had daily deals of sorts or day old specials to maybe generate some increased traffic. Nearest to Pape Station The pastries, the caneles, it is all just like in France. I am so pleased I found a place that has actual items from France. This is unheard of. I will definitely be coming back often. They make the baguettes daily, they even have the most elusive chocolates in the world - Voisin from Lyons where they don't use pre-made factory chocolate blocks, they create all of the blocks themselves by mixing actual cocoa powder with butter, etc. I cannot wait to come back. read more

So how do I begin? I found my old review from 7 years ago and it's no longer a 4, it's now 0. Bad service, expensive products that are not made from scratch in the store (shipped frozen) and if you have an issue with a bad product your head/ears will be ripped off before instead of getting an apology. I know I'll be getting rude response. Replies to customers and/former customers are plenty from this establishment. Just check the replies to others whom have bothered to write a poor review and you'll notice that she takes any hint of wrongdoing personally and instead of being sincere and apologetic, she has a slew of failure reasons and none are her fault of course. Before Christmas in December, I made a trip across town during the pandemic to get Angelina's hot chocolate here, but my eyes grew wide on arrival so I also got three packages of biscuits, spent a total of $110. The caramel palet breton $13.99 was horrible. They were very hard. I'm not a baking expert, but I couldn't figure out if they were stale (or close to being stale) or lacking something in the baking process like not enough butter. It's been awhile, but I've bought this many times in the past and it's never been like this. I occasionally got a friend whom lives near the shop to get stuff for me, but that will obviously not happen anymore after this bad experience...keep reading... I debated on drafting an online review in the wee hours, but instead decided to call the owner the next day. December: I called and she was curt and she said she was busy. That's fine I get it, but I relayed her the details again as she jotted down my number because she jumped to conclusions and didn't listen to the nature of my call. Hours later I got her vm and she said *she tasted one of the bad (hard) biscuits and they are over baked, that I've probably never had it over baked and to eat them with a beverage, and I can get a replacement bag next time*. Okay fine, strange, I didn't call her back because it was after hours and I figured I'd return another one day because she said to. I also didn't want to commute soon again on public transit during the pandemic for biscuits. Besides, I don't want to eat $13.99 biscuits (or even cheap ones) with a beverage to soften them up and not be able to taste the product in its natural state. January: I called to find out if they had a fresh batch so that I could drop by. Instead of being polite let alone apologetic, she talked over me without pausing, repeatedly told me she gave me fabulous service, etc. etc. When I was finally able to interject after the shock of absorbing what she was saying, I advised her I wasn't calling about her previous service, that I called for a replacement, but I'm now put off by her rudeness, which she blamed for being French (sorry woman, but I was born and raised here for 47 years and I've never been to my parents' motherland, but even if I have should I blame my wrongdoings on that? Besides if I reacted how she reacted in the workplace, I would be finito). She asked if I wrote a review and I said "no I drafted one, but deleted it because I wanted to call" and she said good and slightly changed her mood, but I told her if I wanted to write a review I have every right and she cannot tell me I can't. I also told her during her going off on me that she likely mixed me up with someone else. @ store: I went into the store next day (today): I said nothing other than we spoke on the phone and I'm sure she was still upset, as I didn't get a greeting and gave an eyebrow expression (note she was not wearing a mask so expressions are visible). I asked for a refund (I was not in the mood to deal anymore hard over baked biscuits after such a horrible experience). I decided to tell her how rude she was on the phone yelling at me, but she said she wasn't going to get into it, and then said that she didn't yell at me and talked over me again about her exceptional service and that she takes feedback into consideration...I reminded her again that she wasn't listening and talking over me. I honestly don't care if they were over baked and I was offered a replacement, just say sorry, and not be so rude. I only wanted an apology. That is what anyone in the service industry should know how to do. I had to waste my time, TTC fare during a risky pandemic to deal with this. After I contacted them for delivering plain croissants instead of chocolate croissants for an event I was hosting, they only offered me a 10% refund because I had received the plain croissants which I DID NOT WANT OR ORDER. We went by for some brunch on a Sunday and had the pre set snack for $25. It came with a croissant cut in half, 2 chocolates, 2 halves of a candied orange, 4 small savoury cookies, 4 small sweet cookies and 3 small cubes of cheese along with blueberry jam. I had a tea and my wife had a coffee. It was really good and the place is quite nice and comfortable. To go: some flan and 3 Florentines The final bill was $56.27 and after tip $64.71 I would go back again. If you can get past the price, the quality and service is excellent. This bakery cafe definitely gets an ooh la la! Simply the best croissants in the city. So what if they're not made locally? They're made in France with French flour and butter. You can't get better than that! Baked fresh every day, so delicious! Their coffee is excellent and their hot chocolate Angelina is to die for. Also tried their Parisian sandwich made with a real demi-baguette, ham, and brie; simple and good. We seem to drop into this sweet little bakery/cafe every time we are in the area. The quiche is wonderful and the baguette perfectly fluffy and chewy. Every time though, we get caramels from the back of the shop - either in the twisty clear wrappers or the pale blue foil wrappers. Exquisite bundles of happiness. I recall reading about Douce France a while ago, not necessarily for their croissants, but for their chocolates. But within that article I recalled that Douce France made croissants too. So while I was running errands in the area, I made the hubby go in and pick up some croissants to try. These croissants were amazing! Light and flakey and full of buttery goodness! I'm pretty sure that it partly had to do with them being fresh from the oven as well. I wish that I lived closer so I could eat these croissants whenever I wanted. I had been following this place on yelp for a few months and was so excited to try it on my trip to Toronto. I'm so glad I did because this place is a gem! My group dined in for a light brunch. I had the Notre Dame for two people it was 2 servings of tea, the best blue cheese, homemade crackers, a candied clementine and chocolates. It was like a symphony of flavors in your mouth! I especially love the candid clementine. My Friends ordered some of the pastries. They were also amazing! Like everything else in the store that is imported from France I bought a bottle of the framboise syrup that is which by the way is like no other syrup you will try! Please run to this cute little shop! Oh my, all the chocolate goodness is here! And not that crappy chocolate - the owner's brother (who lives in France) makes the chocolates and imports it to her. The front counter has beautiful macarons, truffles, chocolates..pastries...just about everything to make your heart stop. And they have Angelina's hot chocolate. Anyone who has been to Angelina's in Paris knows the decadence of this hot chocolate. It puts all others to SHAME. You will feel disgusted trying any others after having this. This is quite rich so one pot is enough for 3 people. The smooth velvet chocolate is just simply amazing on so many levels They do have a small menu - soups, pastries, etc. There is a combo meal - soup/cheese plate/bread. A great small meal if you are not too hungry. Their tea selection is really good and you can really taste the different flavours - they come through so well. There are many great items to buy here besides the items in the front counter - cookies, jams, sauces. They all look delicious. This is a little cafe, so maybe about 20 seats or so....it looks like the inside of a house - a little fireplace, the front area, the shelves, bookcases....such a great place to catch up with friends or just to hang out by yourself read more

Lovely, quaint cafe. The pastries are made in France and baked fresh inside. And when I say fresh, I mean fresh. We stayed for over an hour and saw many batches of the delicious apple turnovers (pommes aux chaussons) come and go... a few by me, of course. The staff were very friendly and accommodated a rather large party, delivering superb service. Some people have mentioned the pastries are oily. The apple turnovers are very buttery, much more so than the stuff we usually get served in Toronto. Many Canadian pâtisseries do not use 100% butter and finding European style butter is also rare. So, those may be richer than you're used to. The croissants however did not come across as 'too buttery' to me. Of the croissant type items fir sale, the apple is the richest. I like Ve the wide assortment of jams, olives, and all around delicious French items for sale. A great place to come to buy a hostess gift or grab a king cake for a celebration. read more

Other reviewers are right that this place is very expensive, especially for the packaged goods, but they are unique and imported so you get what you pay for. The pastries are a little expensive but not too bad. The croissant was mediocre - I've had a lot better in Toronto. However the Kouign-Amann was to die for. I'd go back just for this. The canelés had a great flavor but were too spongy and dry for me to give them full stars. I give this a four because I'll likely return and there are some winners here. A French bakery run with a Canadian attitude. Slow inattentive service. When it was run by the husband it was a great little secret on the Danforth. For years I would pop in sometimes every day to pick up a piece of my favorite treat. Now being run by the wife, they never have any stock. Oui oui if you're gonna splurge on pastries, teas and hot cocoa then this is place. All of their pastries are raw shipped from France and freshly baked daily in house. We've been a few times and I love almost everything I've tried. They serve sandwiches and soups as well. Where the lost star is coming from is the lack of choice in that area. There's Brie on a croissant or Brie on a baguette or ham on a baguette. However the pastries, the petite fours, macarons, French flan are to die for. For end of school year presents they had these cute little boxes of chocolates for the teachers, all within a very reasonable price. Especially if you're getting multiples. Their chocolate is very popular, but I am not impressed with so much. It is pricey, so you have some expectation that taste and quality must be good... but I feel betrayed.
