Wasn't impressed. Server wasn't too friendly, but did wait on me right away. Coffee was lukewarm, which is a deal breaker for me. Breakfast was so so. The Cute Girl and I have driven by Dottie's a dozen or more times on the way to get breakfast somewhere else, and each time we say something like, "We'll have to get there sometime." I woke up this morning today and thought, "It's a Dottie's Day, dammit!" All things considered, this was a disappointing experience, and needless to say, Dottie has not cracked my "Top Five Places to Get Breakfast in Dubuque" List. I ordered the Hillbilly Breakfast (based mostly on the strength of the name). It was an English muffin, upon which were two scrambled eggs (which were good), some Swiss cheese (unlocated, untasted, and overall unconfirmed), and perhaps the worst sausage gravy that I have ever seen, tasted, smelled, or otherwise consumed. It was a total mess, and tasted just about as you would expect. I hope the gravy was out of a can--I suspect that it was--and thus I will not take it as a personal attack from DOttie against me. The hashbrowns were better than I expected given how bad the Hillbilly mess was. To make it worse, I found the service on the verge of unpleasant. The lack of good service and the lack of good food does not counteract the good prices. I'll stick with Caroline's or head across 5th St. for the surprisingly good breakfast at Tony Roma's (yes, really). read more

Tasty diner food. I don't go here for any culinary specialties but it's a great priced breakfast and homemade deserts . Once you are a regular you really feel at home! The staff is mostly friendly and welcoming. They can tweak most any menu item for your taste/cooking preference and will even turn the fryers on at 8 am for you to get french fries! This place is nostalgic and comfortable. The breakfast menu is a delight. There were so many items to choose from. I usually go for the classic 2 eggs hash browns slice of ham and dry toast. The Hillbilly Surprise caught my eye coming out of the kitchen. What a delight! read more

The worst place to eat first off i came in there and order a skillet the waitress came back with a plate full of eggs and cut up meat. And to make things worst the coffee was ice cold and the food as well. After eating that slop i went to work with a bad case of diarrhea there service was terrible and so was the food people please do yourself a favorite and don't i repeat don't go there!! read more

Stopped by this local restaurant on a Monday morning. Very cute and home town feeling. It was about 10:30 and they were serving breakfast and lunch. We ordered 3 egg omlette with hashbrowns and toast (Hashbrowns were undercooked and mushy), skillet(great flavor and eggs cooked perfectly but too much cheese), 2 eggs, baccon and toast(all perfect), and chicken strips with fries (my very picky son said some of the best chicken hes ever had). This place was simple yet satisfying. We may try again tomorrow. read more

Stopped here on a trip out of town and was frankly disgusted by the food. My partner ordered a dinner and I ordered a breakfast meal that included pancakes as a safe option. Even the pancakes were pillowy and flavorless, worse than I could make in my own kitchen. The ham that came on the side was an extremely meager portion and nothing special. The salad my partner got with his dinner was literally just the prebagged mixed lettuce you get at Walmart with ranch on the side. Nothing we got here between the two of us was worth paying money for which is unfortunate, considering how cute and classic the diner itself is. read more

Dottie's is a no frills, no nonsense old school diner located in downtown Dubuque. While the current management has been here since 1990, the decorators haven't been by since probably the 70's, so it retains a simple retro appeal. Great choice of breakfast entrees all priced under $10.00, lunch items like sandwiches and melts for $5-6.00. I took advantage of the day's breakfast special of eggs, meat (bacon, sausage or ham), hash browns for a wallet friendly $4.25. With coffee, the bill was $6.99. What breakfast should cost. Service was gracious and swift. While it looks like a place where the server might call you "honey," I was not called that or any other name. Poopsie or Buttercup would have been fine, too. After reading the reviews, I decided it was probably a hit or miss. Unfortunately, our experience was a miss. Many reviews mentioned undercooked hashbrowns. We asked for extra crispy and got crispy on one side, soggy on the other. My pancake was also extra crispy and needed a knife. Disappointing to say the least. read more

Classic diner! We stopped by at 11:30 so both breakfast and lunch were available. I had the burger and my aunt and cousin had French toast. Best French toast and fries any of us have had in a while. Was disappointed - the hash browns weren't crispy and were completely flavorless, the omelet I had came slathered in American cheese, which in this context was just nasty. Good food with a homemade flare. I had the skillet and a cup of chili and both were very good. The restaurant is set up as a diner style.
